I'm hoping some Canadian friends can help here. We're on our way across the border today to Ikea. If we buy an item for $149 Canadian how much more should we expect to pay in Canadian tax?

When we cross back over the border would we get any of the tax back? I'm not sure how it works.

Thanks

depends on what province your coming into. If your coming into Ontario you will be paying 13% tax. No idea how you would claim it when you get home.

There used to be a program where you would get the GST back, but I think our government scrapped it. Check for pamphlets in the waiting areas at the airport, that's where I've seen them before.

As you're in Buffalo, you're likely coming into Ontario and therefore tax is 5% federal, 8% provincial.

The program where visitors could get back the GST (federal) portion on their purchases that they took out of the country was scrapped by the Conservative government in 2007. There are a few (very few) exceptions as noted in the preamble to the form here:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/gf/gst176/gst176-07e.pdf

There are some items which are PST (provincial) exempt. Things such as books, meals under $4, children's clothing etc, but probably not much at IKEA.

On the upside, with the current exchange rate on the USD, you'll pay less than sticker price even with tax added when paying USD. :)

Hope that helps.
