We visited WDW in August last year, July the year before. The most important tip for surviving heat is STAY HYDRATED! Instead of buying water, we simply asked for water at any and every counter service place or drinks stop we encountered.
Look for cool spots to relax in periodically (air conditioned attractions, stores etc).
I've never tried the mister fans, but a washcloth or swimmer's towel (chamois) soaked in cool water and applied to neck, face etc kept me cool. If you're really hot, and you don't mind forgoing your look, soak your head if you're overheating. Personally, I decided early that my vacation was likely to be 12 consecutive bad hair days, so I rocked a hat or a pony tail most of the time and didn't care too much about picture perfect hair! The hat was a must for sun protection anyway!
Wear moisture wicking clothing that will dry quickly. Don't forget to apply sunscreen often - not a "cool" tip, but definitely a necessity in the August heat.

For my family of 4 we have 1 very small bag that we take turns carrying because it is too hot for large backpacks etc. The only things we carry are the camera, a few snacks, sunscreen and 2 ziplocks with wet wash cloths. I find the misty bottles a nuisance because I can't stand anything hanging around my neck and again, we don't like to carry too much. Soaking the cloth in cold water and wiping our necks and faces works wonders. Like the OP we don't carry water bottles but just ask for ice water and we rarely drink soda. Those frozen lemonades are very refreshing also! Wearing the right clothing makes all the difference also...it amazes me to see people wearing black clothing or jeans.

We are going in August as well and I'm buying light color t-shirts for my DH who normally wears black, dark blue or darker green shirts.
Both of my girls have a mini-fan on their lanyards which I'm sure they'll share with us, if needed. :)
The ice-water from CS is a good tip! Carrying waterbottles can be a hassle! We bought a smaller back-pack this year that is actually a small cooler to store all of our things in!

I used a cotton handkerchief. There cheap and come in many colors. Just add cool water from the water fountains, tie around neck and go. I'm not going down any red carpet, I'm having fun at Disney located in a hot, humidity laden spot on the planet, and its August. What's a little wet handkerchief. SURE FEELS GOOD and its reusable and easy to carry.

Adding to the handkerchief/bandanna idea.... get the bandanna wet, add a few ice cubes along the middle diagonal and fold into a triangle (ice inside). then roll down the triangle down to the point. THEN put it around your neck with the ice at the back of your neck. Stays cool as the ice melts.

My family and I are also going in August. Has anyone ever used the type of neck wrap, more commonly known as "cool neck wraps", where you soak in water for about an hour, and it is "supposed" to keep you cool for hours? Just wondering if they may be a viable option, or not worth the money.

I hear you can make them for pretty cheap on your own with a bandanna and some bead-thingies from the gardening center at wal-mart
The seem viable b/c they are supposed to keep you cool via evaporation but I haven't actually tried them but I was going to see if I could make some for our trip and I'd love some other input as well! :)

The cool ties are a lifesaver. If they work in the rediculous heat of Iraq and Afganistan, I'm sure they will be sufficient in the Disney heat. My mom bought 3 for the soldiers she had adopted and they all were so thankful for them they each asked for at least one more so they could keep one soaking while htey used one for a few hours. She eneded up getting a few yards of fabric, some velcrow and some of the beads that go inside and made a whole bunch for everyone there. I was also the lucky recipient of a few although thankfully DH have not been deployed and haven't used them, but I've heard good stories.
Sorry if that was long, but I think these are great.

I have used the "cool neck things" but prefer a good old bandanna. The neck thing are hard to carry if you decide to take them off. We always go in May and it is generally not as hot at July and August. Those months I would take the "cool neck things".

Thanks for the info! Where can you get the beads, and what are they called?

Has anyone tried a chilly pad? It looks like a towel that when you wet it gets cool. I bought one at a sporting good store by the baseball equipment. Not sure if it works yet . Will be trying it at disney in June.:cool1:

We went last Aug. with a group of 8. Half loved the cooling neck things the other half hated them!:confused3 We all loved the little misters. DH wore the wicking polos and raved about them the whole time! DS was in a stroller and is more heat sensitive (asthma) - so we got him the bigger pump mister and he loved it. Not only did it keep him cool and entertained all of the adults would stoop down so he could give them a spray ;). Drink a lot and keep your hair off your neck! I think a visor with a pony was perfect! Go out early and come back before afternoon and swim! Have lots of fun and pay attention to what your body says!:goodvibes

These are great suggestions. As someone that would probably melt completely into a pool of sweat, I have always wondered why anyone would go during the summer months?
Thank you

We went on a family vacation in Arkansas one year when it was 107 degrees every day (no joke.) When we went crystal digging (actually the 2nd day we went - after we practically burned alive the first day) I went by WalMart and found some of the little ice packets for lunch boxes - these were smaller than the ones you usually see. I threw these in our cooler, then wrapped them in bandanas for the backs of our necks or under our hats while we were out in the sun. It worked well!
I know this wouldn't work for all day at the parks, but if you're just coming back to the park after a mid-day break, you could do it - then just slip the melted ice pack into your backpack to use again later.........and you could re-use your bandana with some ice cubes or just water from a sink or fountain.

Believe it or not. A really strong sunblock works.:thumbsup2

I love the ice cube part of this idea! I was planning on trying wet bandanas this year, but love the ice cube idea even more!

we are going in July so I will try some of your ideas. I am worried about my dd10 she usually refuses to wear her hair up in a pony tail but I think one day in Disney she will have a change of heart.

We live in GA where it gets almost as hot and humid as FL, so it doesn't bother us as much. That said, my kids use the wet bandannas and misters alot and we all appreciate an air-conditioned restaurant in the middle of the day. We make our ADR's for lunch for this reason.

I deliver the mail on a walking route and the I try and stay cool on those hot days is a safari type hat or a straw hat. It gives shade all around your head and lets air into the area around the head. Just keeping my face away from direct sun light helps a ton. Plenty of water and washing your face/wrists when you can. The under armour type clothing also helps a lot. I don't feel all drenched in sweat and actually stay dry and cool. I don't buy the name brand b/c the cheaper stuff at walmart/target work just fine for me.

I bought my neck wraps online at www.Polarbreezebandanas.com
They sent the items super fast, was great at communicating and they had a variety of fabrics. I love them!

I didn't care for the cool neck wraps, either. I guess in the humidity, the idea of evaporation to cool you just doesn't work. I felt uncomfortable with another thing on my body. So I wear the hair off my neck, a cap or visor for the sun, and wear loose lightweight and light colored clothing. I also use the misting fan, but the mini one, not the big bottle mister. I ordered them a few years ago, from brookstone, I think. (Probably available elsewhere cheaper). I know some folks here like the cool neck wraps, to each his or her own.....
And as to why go in August....well, that's when I can take off work!!!!!:confused3 Don't ya just hate when earning a living gets in the way of my FUN!?!?!?!?!?;)

I've purchased 5 CHILL Cooling Towels for our upcoming trip. I'm also taking a hat, a small keyring fan, a water mister fan bottle, cooling bandanas, and a couple of instant ice packs. I can't handle the heat! :rotfl2:
