This isn't limited to Southern California, but there are about 10 museums in the area that offer free admission on the first weekend of the month to a Bank of America cardholder (http://museums.bankofamerica.com/).
There's a place - new this year - called MUZEO (http://muzeo.org/home.php), which I'd never heard of, but is of interest because it's in Anaheim - doesn't that city have some other tourist attractions? ;)
Not far away is Discovery Science Center. The Autry Center is also part of the program. Photos from these two museums are in this thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1902959).
