One of the other threads got me to thinking about making a poll. So here it is.......
What do you find more attractive in a potential partner/mate/hook-up, etc.--Looks or personality?
And don't lie. I'm not here to judge you.
Okay......maybe a little. :rolleyes1
zeitzeuge
04-21-2009, 04:41 PM
Initially? I would have to say looks. Go ahead, judge. :) I'm initially attracted to someone based upon their looks. Something catches my eye, like well, a host of things I won't get into here. :rolleyes1
What keeps me around and hold my interest other then a hairy chest and facial hair ;), is their personality. If they can make me laugh, hold an inteligent conversation, not take life to seriously all the time, can be a kid when they need to, etc.....THEN I feel like I've got the whole package.
That really doesn't answer your question does it.....

I think anyone who doesn't say looks matter at least on initial impressions are full of themselves. However looks rarely will keep anyone's interest on the long term. I've dated some really hot guys, but they were dumb as rocks (or played the part very well) or just emotionally absent and I just couldn't deal.

I was just curious because whenever someone I'm dating starts the "What was the first thing you noticed about me?" game, and it's their turn, it neeeeeeeever has anything to do with my looks, which makes me feel lousy.....but I guess it shouldn't. I think it's just because I've always wanted to be hot because I'm usually considered the "weird, artsy nerd".

It depends on the guy. Some guy's personality makes them so adorable. Others it's their looks. Ultimately I'd like someone with both. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder so what I consider good looks might be different from someone else. Same thing with personality. It's really about what you find attractive. However, I'd rather be with someone with OK looks that has the personality than a model with no personality. Also, some guys you might not consider good looking but by getting to know them and their personality they become attractive to you. Problem is no one normally wants to get to know someone. They all want love at first sight.

For me, its both! It has to all come together into a nice little package! Just like I met, Jon....I knew he was the one. I'm attrached to his dark features and on our 1st date, I was imediately fell in love with his personality.....(June this year, will be 6 years) Thank God for the 18 year olds that I worked with at the time that "fixed" us up....
Eh I'd probably go for someone not too attractive w/ no personality, but what can I say, I'm desperate...

Hey, you didn't include chemistry. :confused3 That's super important, and can supersede both looks *and* personality!
Monorailman, I think the fact that your dates mention that they noticed something other than your looks first is a compliment. Even if you have the cutest face and bod on the planet, if you have *presence* you can draw people to you based on that alone. And I can say, having a most hot wife, that I went out of my way to appreciate her other qualities when we were getting to know one another. She has heard all of her life how beautiful she is -- I wanted her to know that I looked deeper than that and loved her for who she is. :lovestruc Ironically, I went a bit too far with that, and she ended up thinking I wasn't particularly impressed with her appearance. :confused3 Women. ;)

Looks for a hook up, personality for the long haul (fortunately I lucked out with both with my guy). He makes me laugh and just thinking about him puts a smile on my face. Funny thing is that I am 6'2 and he is 5'7. I don't notice the height difference, but in photos I look like a giant! Oh well, my brother is 6'1 and his wife is 5' and they are a cute couple.:goodvibes

I would have to say both initially - but then looks just do not matter when your in love - or at least they shouldn;t matter ;) I know love is blind cause Chris picked me!!! :)
On another note - I've dated some real hot guys in my younger days - its funny - most of the real hot guys turned real ugly.

Looks never seem to "stay put". Having said that, some people (not all) look a lot better once they reach their 40s than they did in their 20s.
And then there's Joan Rivers........

I've got mixed feelings. When I first "saw" (we met online) my wife, it was her eyes that caught me. However, NOT because they were so beautiful, which they are...but because of the depth and honesty, I saw in them. We really and truely fell in love, long distance, and yup, over the phones..THOUSANDS of hours later, we met, in person. I knew more about her, over the phone, than I did my ex husband, of 10 years! Very sad to me when I realized that. There were sparks, as I'd seen pics of her..but by then, I was already hooked! So you tell me...was it looks or personality? ;) Either way, we celebrate 3 years June 6th! :yay:

Your SO naughty!! When we first met, neither one of us made alot of money. It wasn't until we got together and decided for her to move here and start a life together...that we started making money. We now own a beautiful home, travel all the time and yes, we earn great livings. I say it's because we FOUND our destiny, eachother. Now, life is amazing!! Hah! I'm 5' 7" with a wrestler's build and DH is 6' 2" with a swimmer's build. We make a very odd couple. I like tall guys and he likes wrestlers. This works for us.
We went for looks!
We found that having a very strong physical passion for each other - and a big love of Disney - did the trick of bonding us over the years. 15 years later (we met quite young) we're married, on our 2nd home and pouring all (er, most) of our energies and resources into DVC so that we can go visit The Happiest Places on Earth together as often as we can!
Our personalities were VERY different and over the years we've learned to adapt to each other - and to improve on our respective bad points. Personalities can be changed a bit, if a person is willing and motivated.

I think that we can tell a lot about a person by their looks. Have you ever noticed that some people just look friendly? They have sweet faces and look like they are just delighted to meet you, even though they haven't yet. I find that there is also a softness about people who care about other people.

My friends were trying to figure out my type one night while sitting around at a bar. My type is pretty easy. Dark hair, hairy, goatee. Then I got into specifics that make it even better like tattoo's, stocky build, etc. They pointed out that I really like nerds and dorks. I find those qualities SO endearing. So I came up with adorkable.
Seems to fit. :)

It certainly takes a good degree of both IMO. I met my bf on the internet. I had a picture on my profile of me and scooby doo at Universal. We met, I became ::well:: aquainted with his room, he became ::well:: aquainted with my basement, and now we're going on 4 years together.
Obviously physical attraction sparked things and that's the way I feel it should be. I mean I can't be with someone if there's no physical attraction.
Then again, I can't stand certain personality types either. We have both had to alter a few things or simply learn to accept the other's personality traits, but we have done pretty good.
I put up with him being wwwaayyy off the gaydar scale when he is around his girlfriends and he puts up with me shouting at the TV during the Packer game:lmao:
He is one of those people who like to "see" multiple people at the same time before picking one. The other people he was seeing were hotter than I am(especially at the time...I had braces!) but he stuck with me cuz of personality because he has a good heart.
Ok I have to stop before I start crying. He has been in Italy since Jan 13th and I won't see him until early July.

I kind of had the opposite experience with two guys who were rich.
When I lived in Kansas City, my best friend was part of the Mafia, which basically runs/owns half the restaurants and bars around there in the downtown area. Never knew there was such a huge Mafia presence there until I lived there for four years. Her two Uncles ran the city.
I dated one of her "cousins" for a short time and because of that, ended up getting to know some of the family. This guy showered me with gifts. We never paid for a drink at a bar or food at a restaurant since the "family" were everywhere. We bypassed lines to get into the clubs, etc. Great life until he thought he had me wrapped around his little.........um, finger.
Then I found out that you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting someone he was ALSO currently sleeping with.
That was the bad one.
Then, I ended up meeting a brother of an uncle of hers. He was cute, sweet, down to earth. He kept offering to buy a car and a house for me. I knew I was in trouble when he bought me a diamond ring on our 3rd date and a gold tie clasp. He kept saying there were no attachments with the ring, just wanted to give it to me "because". But what the heck...a tie clasp?
He scared the Be-Jebus out me and because I was young and stupid and wanted to be carefree and not answer to anyone, I broke up with him after a couple months.
Would I do that today? ;)

Today you would wait for a few more of those rings before breaking up with him, wouldn't you? :lmao:
Exactly! :rotfl:
Ah, I say that but when it comes down to it, I really have to be attracted to them and really love them to stay in the relationship. I'd rather be barely making ends meet and be madly in love , then to be filthy rich and wanting to put a paper bag over their head, just to be intimate.

So long as you don't mimic the mafia characteristics and put a plastic bag over their head.

Jeez! What is it what the gay mafia thing? I didn't even know they existed until a few years ago when I was informed that there's also one here. Apparently nobody opens a bar or restaurant in this area (the gallery/shopping/bar district) without getting their permission.
Now let's hear about some of these gifts, Wally. popcorn::

Attitude. You have to know your it for me to be interested.
I also like a nice smile.
My girl has both. (She is also charming and caring, gorgeous, financial independent, artistic….you get the picture)
Ok now this is the guy part of me (how sexist is that!) :rolleyes1
Attitude and looks for a hookup. I really do not need that much between the ears. I cannot believe I said that! ;) I am so innocent, really.

Back in the day when it was a hookup it was all about the looks. Who needs intelligence or a personality when by the end of the night you're leaving anyway.
But when I met my husband it was all about him. Yes, he was handsome but there was a whole lot more I was interested in.

Thanks for not raking me across the coals for being so sappy;) I jsut really wanted to tell you that because it is so true. Your photo makes me smile every time I see it, even when I am having a really bad day. Isn't it wonderful when you find hte one you are meant to be with:love:
Good Lawd, I'd never rake someone over the coals after they gave us the ULTIMATE compliment! It IS the best thing, to FINALLY find the RIGHT person, just for you. I'd been married twice :confused3 and both times, miserable. I had actually dated several great guys, after I was seperated, and it really was destiny, that I met Christy. Almost at 3 years, and it keeps getting better. For the 1st time in my life, I wake up happy EVERY day...and look forward to going home after work. Every trip we take is amazing....I really could go on...and yes, the happiness we share, is very evident on our faces. Thank you again, for your sweet words. BTW, lived in Germany as a child! Wie geht's? ;)

Ok, ok, OK! Did a little research on your Roberto, Wally and I'm impressed. ::yes:: He is a very talented danseur and that is not something to simply dismiss, eh? He's won any number of accolades and awards for his performances.
One still that turned up in the search had him in full pose mid air a la Nureyev, who "discovered" him by the way. ::yes::
I'll not say that any of my new found information makes him any more attractive (but that would be expected! LOL) but it does put him into context. Very nice context. :teeth:
Now then, you have my permission to pursue. :lmao:;)

I agree that Roberto Bolle is HAWT!
If he were out, he'd be on "the list" :rotfl2:
google his name and check out other pictures of him. I think he's just gorgeous. And he appears to be a brilliant dancer. (Primo ballerino? Is that even a term? :lmao:)
And Wally, you don't get him all to yourself. You have to share.
You sharpen your fangs, but I'm getting a wooden stake ready to take you out in order to get to him! :cool2:

Damn that is a long time:sad2:What on earth is pulling you apart for so long??? And here I have been feeling sorry for myself because my guy is gone every weekday for a month (but I still get him on weekends). You deserve a hug for the sappy post and the long time missing your love:hug:
He is studying abroad and I moved from WI to FL, so even when he gets back, he has another year of school. I'll be happy when I get to see him once a month! I'm gonna get well acquainted with airports, that's for sure
