So I spent hours--and I literally mean HOURS researching dining options, reading reviews and looking at menus for our spring break trip. I could recite the menu for most, if not all of the WDW restaurants in my sleep. It helped pass the time during our long and snowy Midwestern winter. We spent a week at CBR--me, 40; DH, also 40; DS17 and DS13. Yeah, our first trip back to WDW (not on the dining plan) with two teenagers.

I don't eat meat, but I'm not really a true vegetarian. I eat eggs and cheese and sometimes gravy and bacon. My DH calls me the 'vegetarian who doesn't like vegetables.' That's not entirely true, but I guess I am pretty picky. My DH eats anything; DH17 is growing out of being picky but still is not big on fruit or vegetables; and DH13 is literally the pickiest eater ever. Last Sunday, on Easter, he had two rolls with butter and a dill pickle (not for lack of food on the table, either). He will be a freshman in high school and still orders children's chicken strips. He eats cereal, waffles and pancakes, eggs, cheese, white bread, pizza, chicken, hamburgers, spaghetti, pretzels, and anything sweet. That's it. No variations. No mixing food. No spices. Nothing green. He has been known to hyperventilate if they bring out his buttered noodles garnished with parsley. The doctor said to either give him a multivitamin and hope he grows out of it or to starve him and then he'd eat what we put in front of him. We chose the former, though sometimes I really am tempted to try the latter. He had no trouble ordering off the children's menu, but we always had to ask specifically to get one. I do have to say he is generally healthy and is tall for his age, so we're just waiting for his 'palate to mature.' Might be a LONG wait, but hey, in the meantime, he's a pretty cheap date.

Anyway, enough about our random eating habits. after 11 trips to WDW, we've eaten at pretty much every restaurant and have pretty strong favorites. This trip during the last week of March was the one that turned that conventional wisdom on its ear. Basically, what we thought we didn't like, we loved. What we used to like, not so much this time. Go figure.
And we tried some new places.

Here's where we ate: Mama Melrose, Kona Cafe, Ohana, Toyko Dining, Cantina de San Angel; Tutto Italia, Sci-Fi Theatre, Grand Floridian Cafe, Wolfgang Puck Express, CBR Food Court, Banana Cabana (not food, but we did sample many of the drinks),Tangierine Cafe, Pop Century Food Court, The Wave, Captain Cook's, The Plaza, Columbia Harbor House, Casey's, Goofy's Candy Kitchen, MK eggroll cart.

Here's where we didn't: Gardenview Tea at the Grand Floridian (second time in a row we've missed it), Brown Derby (switched to Mama Melrose at the last minute) and Le Cellier (call me crazy, but we ate at Cantina de San Angel instead), breakfast at The Wave (too tired), Marrakesh (everyone wanted to switch to Tutto Italia instead).

The best of the week:
Mama Melrose
Kona Cafe (breakfast)
Tutto Italia
Toyko Dining
Wolfgang Puck Express dinner
Cantina de San Angel
Captain Cook's
Banana Cabana (what wasn't good?)
Tangierine Cafe falafel
Casey's mini corn dogs
MK egg rolls

The worst of the week:
Sci-Fi Theatre
The Wave
Wolfgang Puck Express breakfast
The Plaza
Ohana

I will add more detail on what we ate and the rationale behind the rankings. I always make them rank, during our LONG car trip home, their favorites of the week. I have to do it quick, because they only humor me for so long. We were all surprised at what restaurants stood out for both good and bad reasons.

I'm in. I'm very curious as to why the Plaza, The Wave and Sci-Fi were on your "worse" list. The Plaza is our "must do" last meal of our trip and Sci Fi has been getting really good reviews lately and we were thinking of going back after a nine year absence on our next trip, and also trying Wave which has been getting stellar reviews.

Glad you enjoyed Mama Melrose--it is one of our favorites.

I guess I'll start with The Plaza, since it is the first place we ate. We had an ADR for 8:00 p.m. and we were seated after about a 15-minute wait. The wait wasn't bad, since we could watch Spectromagic.

The Plaza gets such a low ranking primarily because of service. The food was okay at best, but the poor and disinterested service really dragged down the whole experience. I'm not one who generally gets too excited one way or another about service, but after waiting for more than 20 minutes for our server to appear, I was getting frustrated. Two other servers walked by at different times and said 'your server will be right out.' Yeah, right.

The restaurant was starting to clear out for the fireworks, so the number of diners wasn't the problem. Our server finally appeared, never made eye contact, never spoke any other words than 'what do you want to eat,' took our order, and then disappeared again for 10 or 15 minutes, only to re-appear, throw (and I do mean throw--kind of an overhand toss from 5 feet away) straws on the table as an afterthought. 15 minutes after that, the food appeared. He forgot my vegetarian chili and never refilled water or Coke. And the cardinal sin--we had to wait forever for the check.

I dislike waiting in restaurants when I am done eating--I guess it's a character flaw. My DH is still mad about the time I told a server he was done while he was in mid-chew with his fork poised above his plate. He wanted that last bite! I wanted to leave. Anyway, I digress.

When the food finally arrived, the fireworks were in full swing and we could see them by craning our necks. The food was 'eh.'

I had the vegetable sandwich, but didn't like the strong pesto taste. I like pesto, but this was overwhelming. And they don't have sweet potato chips anymore. Bummer.

DH had the chicken strawberry salad, which was pretty good and fresh. Not many strawberries, though.

DS17 had a bacon cheeseburger, vanilla shake and fries. He said the burger was dry, and they forgot the bacon. Both my sons have radar when it comes to whole wheat anything (even when the bread is deceptively light-colored). Thus, he wasn't a big fan of the bun. He said it was dry and crumbly and he was mad about the missing bacon. The shake was good.

DS13 had Sprite. He was tired and grouchy. And he had eaten an entire can of Pizza Pringles earlier.

Actually, we were all tired and grouchy at that point, and the service didn't help anything. Overall, the food was just this side of okay. It was definitely not the Plaza experience I remembered from the past, but our server had a lot to do with that.

Wow, not a great experience at The Plaza - that really surprises me as we have had nothing but great food and service there. Still, hopefully it was just an off night for your server. Sorry if it ruined your evening.

Next up on the dining agenda was SCI-FI THEATRE. We had an ADR for noon and the entry was packed with people trying to get out of the pouring rain.

Sci-Fi has always been one of our favorites, if nothing else for the atmosphere. We were seated after about a 15-minute wait. We didn't mind the wait, since at least we were out of the rain. One of the themes of this trip seemed to be longer than usual waits for ADR's. The Plaza and Sci-Fi weren't bad at around 15 minutes, but we did wait more than 45 minutes for a couple ADR's later in the week. We never experienced really lengthy waits before, even during spring break.

On to the food--I had the spinach artichoke dip, which was good, but on the cold side. I had the chocolate peanut butter cake for dessert, which I was really looking forward to--and it was dry. Like really dry and burned. I ate it anyway, because it was chocolate, after all. Did I tell you it was dry? But it was seriously dry, old and burned. And if there was peanut butter in it, I couldn't taste it. I could see the hollowed out part where it was supposed to be, but I only detected a tiny bit of peanut butter. Not the gooey goodness and moist, molten cake I was expecting.

DH had a reuben. He said it was good--a regular reuben. DS17 had a cheeseburger, fries and a vanilla coke and thought it was just 'okay.' He didn't feel good later that day and blamed the 'greasy' cheeseburger, but who knows? DS13 had a kid's hot dog and fries and he said the hot dog was okay, but the bun was stale. He (I) ordered the tomato soup as the other side, and I liked it quite well until I found a small piece of black plastic in it.

Our service, unlike at The Plaza, was great. She was attentive and friendly and even took a picture of the four of us in our car. It always seems like I am never along on any vacations because I take all the pictures, so it was nice to have documentation that I was there!

I realize the first two reviews I have done sound negative and on the whiny side. We really aren't like that in real life, I promise! We love food and since I hate to cook, we eat out A LOT. I guess we just hit at least The Plaza and Sci-Fi on off days. Maybe we just weren't feeling the Disney magic this early in the trip. But the irony is that the first two places we ate (and didn't enjoy) had been perennial favorites for us. The moral of the story is that all restaurants (and families) have off days; I spent too much time thinking about food prior to the trip; and tastes can change.

Next up: Mama Melrose was a winner!

We left DHS after our lunch at SCI-FI and returned in the early evening armed with an ADR for Brown Derby. However, DS17 looked at the outside menu and changed his mind about eating there. He wasn't hungry after his burger at Sci-Fi and he said he was craving Italian food. Dealing with teenagers can be exhausting.

So while DH and DS17 rode TT and RnR with fastpasses from earlier that day, DS13 and I cancelled the Brown Derby ADR and attempted to make a new ADR for Mama Melrose. I love the grapefruit cake at Brown Derby and was a little sad to miss it. I didn't try to get it at Starring Rolls like I have done in the past. But Italian did sound good and the last time we ate at Mama Melrose was in 2002. We didn't like the meal very much that time, but for the life of me, I can't remember why.

The only time available was 8 p.m. which worried me a little bit because we wanted to see the 10 p.m. Fantasmic. We hadn't been to Fantasmic since 2005 and wanted to fit it in this trip. I took the 8 p.m. ADR thinking we could slip in early. Nope. It was PACKED. Again, that was the theme the entire week--very busy sit-down restaurants and long ADR waits. They were turning away walk-ups at an alarming rate.

My plan to sneak in early was thwarted when there were at least 50 people waiting in front of us. So we went and walked around for a while and got a table just before 9 p.m. We told the server, who was great, that we wanted to get to Fantasmic and he was quick and efficient.

We started with the breads and dips--I have a great picture, but I don't think I have enough posts to add it here. Suffice it to say that DS17 ate most of it and would have licked the plates if I had let him. There was roasted garlic, a roasted vegetable/olive dip, pesto, and a sun-dried tomato dip. I have never met a carb I didn't like, so I enjoyed it too.

I had the penne with vodka sauce minus the pancetta. It was really good--surprisingly so. DS17 and DH split the chicken parmigiana and DS13 had the kid's cheese pizza. DH had some sort of Italian beer, kids had Cokes and I had water. We were all happy and full. DS13 got a sundae with his kid's meal, so we all shared that.

I had intended to get the honey ricotta cheesecake, but we ended up sharing the molten chocolate cake. Nice, hot and gooey--exactly what the chocolate peanut butter cake at Sci-Fi was not. I do regret not getting the honey ricotta cheesecake, though. And I am totally craving grapefruit cake right now, so I'm sorry I didn't indulge while I had the chance.

Our server, I think his name was Mike, was great in getting us out the door in time for Fantasmic. We caught the 10 p.m. show with the theatre half-empty. We got popcorn and a couple of Mickey bars to end the night.

Next up: Quick breakfast at Old Port Royale and an ADR change for Cantina de San Angel

My morning habit each day was to take my mug and walk from Jamaica to OPR at CBR and pick up coffee and breakfast. Funny--I actually used to like 'Disney' coffee because it tasted like Disney to me, if that makes any sense. They had the same 'Disney' coffee when we stayed at the Hilton Head and Vero Beach resorts and it seemed familiar. The novelty, however, has worn off and we had serious coffee withdrawal by the end of the week. Pressed pot coffee at Kona Cafe and The Wave helped somewhat.

Each morning, I would pick up cereal, milk and pastries and they would eat in the room. The selection was okay at OPR, nothing great. We didn't get any hot breakfasts, so I can't comment on that. I will say that my DS13 had doughnut withdrawal by the end of the week, as well. Not a doughnut to be had at OPR.

Our second full day was spent at EPCOT. I had lunch ADR's for Le Cellier--the holy grail of ADR's. Over the years, we had eaten both lunch and dinner at Le Cellier and especially liked the pretzel rolls. But, believe it or not, and I don't know what came over us--we cancelled Le Cellier and opted for an outside lunch at Cantina de San Angel.

It was really nice--full sun, blue sky and no humidity--so that probably factored into the decision. Remember, we were coming off a horrendous Midwest winter.

I can't remember the year, but we ate at Cantina de San Angel before and didn't think much of it, but this year was becoming more and more about giving places a second shot.

I had a taco salad with black beans--the only vegetarian option on the menu except for chips and cheese. They told me things are premade and they can't make any substitutions. It was actually really good. DS13 had a kids quesadilla and liked it, along with chips and cheese.

DS17 had a combo plate and inhaled it. He loved it, and DH had three tacos, which he also liked. We shared chips and cheese and DH and I had a margarita. We were surprised at how much we enjoyed this lunch. We got there just after World Showcase opened, so it was not crowded. Very peaceful and relaxing. Not the best food I've ever had, but definitely good.

After our lunch, we picked up some snacks for dessert in Norway--school bread and rice cream.

We (I) felt a little bad about missing Le Cellier, but I've learned I have to sometimes go with the flow and it usually turns out for the best.

Thanks to everyone who is reading along. I am enjoying reliving the experience by posting the reviews.

Our dinner that second night was at Tokyo Dining. DH loves sushi and I had read that this was a good place from which to watch Illuminations.

After arrival at EPCOT, we kind of snacked--falafel at Tangierine Cafe was really good--beating the previous best from the Haight in San Francisco that we had years ago by a mile. Also got addicted to the Grey Goose slushies--so good. I have to try to figure out how to make one at home! I think we also had a fiesta margarita while walking around the world. I'm not a big fan of the sour apple flavor in a margarita. On its own, its okay. I just didn't think it mixed that well.

Got to Tokyo Dining around 8 p.m. which was thirty minutes early. We waited every one of those 30 minutes and then about ten more. The waiting area was packed, but it seemed like most people were waiting for Teppan Edo. We did get a center window table for four, so I can't complain. I did ask for a window table and told there was no guarantee.

The server was good--very friendly--and brought hot towels for our hands, which was nice. We had a new server towards the end of the meal--no explanation, but she was also nice and efficient.

I had a salad with sesame dressing, which I loved, and edamame, which I usually like, but this was served cold. I like it hot better, but it was good. The greens in the salad were very fresh and the flavor of the dressing was amazing--if you like sesame.

DS17 had teriyaki chicken and rice and loved it and DS had plain white rice. I think he had cereal when we got back to the room because he was (no big surprise here) still hungry. As I said, he is definitely a cheap date.

DH had a dim sum basket with tempura and sushi, which he really liked. He also had a sake flight. For dessert, we had the chocolate ginger cake, which we all liked. It was the kind of thing that you have the first bite and think 'that's just okay,' the second bite you are like 'hmmm, this is really good,' and the third bite you are addicted. We all felt the same way about it.

But the best part of the dinner was the view of Illuminations. Not perfect if you are a purist about seeing the show, but really a great dinner view (just a little obstructed) if you've seen it before and just want to enjoy it without the crowds. They pipe in the music (but didn't dim the lights, which would have been an added bonus.)

It was very nice to sit there and relax and enjoy dinner with Illuminations in the background. I would definitely return here with a late ADR. Ultimately, I think the kids prefer Teppan Edo, but they also liked Tokyo Dining. This was a new place for us, and ranked high on our list of 'winners.'

Up next: Yak and Yeti is a big hit

I have to figure out how to 'quote' and then I can reply. But I do think Tokyo Dining is worth a try--if you like that type of food. And I am glad you are enjoying the report. I have been a LONG time lurker and very minor poster, but I spent so much time reading food reviews before our trip this year that I felt like I could return the favor by sharing my own. Sorry I can't post pics yet, because we have a new camera and many good food shots. Maybe I will get up to enough posts for that--but DS13 or DS17 will definitely have to provide technical assistance at that point!

I forgot to add in the previous post that our 'snacking' included a stop at SUNSHINE SEASONS for an orange creme brulee, which didn't seem very 'citrusy' to me, but it was good. We also had a strawberry shortcake, which is worth the walk across EPCOT to get it. And in my book, that's a high ranking. We had one last year and I had been craving it. Sooo good and creamy. DS13 had a bag of pretzels and a Coke and he was thrilled with his traditional and familiar 'snack food.'

The next morning, we slept in a little and ditched the plan for MK and went instead to AK. I made an ADR for lunch at YAK and YETI before we left the room. I think it was at noon. We still made it to AK by 9:10 or so.

We were hungry before noon and decided to see if we could get into Yak and Yeti early after riding Everest. There were a few people lined up at the door, but we got right in with no problem. We had a table near the window on the second floor. It was fun to people-watch. Yak and Yeti was new to us--we opted out of our ADR last year for Pizzafari--we were with other family members and they wanted a quick meal instead.

The service was great. Our server was friendly and funny. I had the lo mein (vegetarian) and it was good. Crunchy vegetables and a sweetish but not too sweet and cloying sauce like some lo meins have. DS17 had honey chicken and rice. He did push the vegetables to the side. He has always loved the honey chicken at Nine Dragons, so for him to say it is as good as that is a high compliment. He loved it and again, would have licked his plate.

DS13 had kid's chicken and white rice and didn't complain, so that means he was satisfied. DH had a dim sum basket and liked it. But the best part of the lunch--and it didn't disappoint after drooling over it on a computer screen all winter--was the pineapple and cream cheese wontons. DH and DS17 LOVED them. They would have returned to Yak and Yeti again and again for that dessert alone. Me, I liked them. I am not sure I loved them. Something was a little sour for me--might have been that particular pineapple--and it didn't exactly 'gel' with the sweet. But they were still good.

Yak and Yeti was a winner for us. I am sorry that we missed Flame Tree Barbeque, since that was another place I wanted to try. Overall, though, we had a great lunch at Yak and Yeti.

After our morning at Animal Kingdom, we opted to relax for the rest of the day and decided to go to Downtown Disney for dinner.

We chose WOLFGANG PUCK EXPRESS for dinner. We hadn't been there in years--I think it used to be in a different location, or at least they changed it enough so it seemed like it. Or maybe it's just my 40-year old memory.

Anyway, I read so many good things about this place that I was looking forward to it.

I had the mediterranean focaccia melt. I was thrown off because I was going to get the roasted vegetable pizza, but they said it is pre-mixed with eggplant. I am not a fan of eggplant. I like to say I am allergic to it, because it makes my mouth itch. My mother says I say that about things I don't like as an excuse. Maybe she's right. I did not, however, want eggplant on my pizza. So I made another choice. It was really good and I was happy with it, and the chips were warm and great. I also had a small ceasar, which was good. Sometimes I crave salads when we have been eating frequently in restaurants.

DH and DS17 each had the barbeque chicken quesadilla and they didn't talk at all while they were eating it, which means they really liked it. DS17 had a side of the four-cheese macaroni. He liked it--and he also couldn't keep his fingers out of my potato chips!

DS13 had buttered noodles. Every time we order buttered noodles for him, we have to make sure to tell them no herb garnish, no parm cheese. He won't eat it if it has been touched by either garnish, no matter how hard you try to camoflauge it. I know, I am not going to win any parenting awards over his eating habits. But he is nothing if not stubborn, and we have sought medical attention for it. As I said before, His Pickiness is generally healthy (though he did come home this time from WDW with pneumonia, but that's another story) and is a good student, athlete and kid, so I guess it is just a waiting game. Trust me, he has been exposed to many kinds of foods and he even ate well until he was three, so I don't know what happened to him. I pity the woman who marries him and has to deal with him ordering kid's chicken strips and white rice when he is 30--let alone cooking for him.

Sorry for the aside. He liked the buttered noodles and they arrived just that--plain. We rounded out the meal with the famous creme brulee. DS17 ate most of it and threatened to stab anyone with a spoon who came near it.

I didn't put up much of a fight, because I knew we were going to go to GOOFY'S CANDY KITCHEN. Neither DS was very interested in the process, which shocked me, because DS13 is all about chocolate and DS17 is a bottomless pit. Once they watched a couple people make their choices, they got a little more into it. DS13 had pretzels dipped in milk chocolate and then in order: oreos, M and M's and Reese's Pieces. He liked the ones with Reese's Pieces best. DH and I shared pretzels with milk chocolate, peanuts and a caramel drizzle and DS17 had a rice krispie treat with chocolate and Butterfingers. He didn't eat it right then because he was too busy texting.

That's another major aside: texting. He was having SERIOUS withdrawal from his girlfriend and spent the majority of the trip texting. We didn't allow him to text at the table during meals, so his phone would vibrate like crazy and then he would spend the next hour after the meal texting. I like his girlfriend, but all the texting drives me crazy! I told him he needs to live his life and have fun on his own vacation, not text it!

After all that, we went to a movie at Downtown Disney--I was mad at them because they didn't want to go back to a park--but I was overruled. Of course, even after the huge meal and double desserts, we had to get popcorn and Cokes to go with the movie, which turned out to not be a bad choice. It was nice to relax in the dark!

After the movie, I talked them into going to POP CENTURY to try the tye-dyed cheesecake. DH was not thrilled, but he will generally go along with my crazy ideas. I wanted to see POP, too, since we have never stayed there and I've read so much about it. We got one piece of cheesecake and a water, and took the requisite pics of the cake and the colored tongues before we called it a night. I won't say the cheesecake was great, but it was one of those things you have to do.

Next up:We finally make it the MK and split our dining choices. Thumbs up for Columbia Harbor House, egg rolls, and corn dogs; Thumbs down for The Wave.

Thanks! I wish the parts about his eating habits weren't true. I would be shocked to read that about another kid, but unfortunately they really are true. Even the part about two rolls and a dill pickle on Easter. That is becoming a family legend.

I saved all the receipts and meant to try and add them all up after the trip to see how we came out. Haven't quite gotten around to that yet--best laid plans! We have never done the DDP and I did consider it this trip, but the fact that I don't eat meat and that DS13 is so darn picky but would be charged as an adult contributed to the decision not to do the plan. Where I do think it would have saved us money was for DS17. He could have eaten DS13's appetizers and probably mine as well and then ordered the biggest steak at every meal along with a milkshake. As it was, we were stopping to pick up snacks like corn dogs, etc., for him when he was hungry 20 minutes after we had a sit-down meal.

Okay. I think I have the quoting down now. Yay, me!

Can't wait to hear about MM, we're trying it for the first time in October!

I would definitely leave it on your list. I was skeptical about it because not only had I not liked it in the past, I had also read bad reviews. I'm glad we gave it a chance.

im glad you enjoyed the Penne at MM i loved that :thumbsup2

Yum! That's actually what I had for dinner tonight, but the sauce was out of a jar. Not as good, but as my neighbor says, 'it'll do."

MM sounds good. We did the same thing as you for our breakfasts last year - I would pick up pastries and fruit in the morning and the kids would devour it on my return to the room :)

The morning walks to OPR were one of my favorite parts of the day, even if it was to get nasty coffee. They would also 'devour' the cereal and pastries when I got back!

I really wanted to fit Tokyo Dining into our Oct trip but not looking likely. Just need to start planning the following year's trip!:thumbsup2

I really do recommend Tokyo Dining. It was probably THE highlight of our trip.

Yum! I am enjoying your report.:thumbsup2

Thanks. I have never written one before, though I write for a living. Go figure.

:goodvibesGreat reports we are going in
June and trying to decide where we want to eat. I'm thinking of changing a few now. I also have a very picky 11 year old sounds like they are on the same diet. I do appreciate that he still only eats from kids menu's it's way cheaper. I was wondering how long that would go on...I keep thinking his taste buds will expand...maybe not.:lmao:

I probably changed my mind 100 times about where we were going to eat. I didn't have trouble getting ADR's for most of the places. I'd say we kept about half of our ADR's and made the rest at the last minute, depending on what we felt like at the time. Sorry, I am not giving anybody who has a picky child much hope. I am in the same boat. My DS17 did used to be pretty picky, though never as bad as DS13 and he started to expand his eating when he was around 15. So I guess there is always hope!

Great reports, thanks for sharing:thumbsup2

Thanks. Vegas is my next food planning trip--we are combining a trip to visit family in CA this summer with a short trip to Las Vegas. Talk about food overload planning!

After three days at WDW, we finally made it to MK. As a quick, non-food aside, we didn't get park hoppers this time around. I didn't think we'd need them and it would make for a more relaxing trip. In reality, it stressed me out not to have hoppers. I focused more on getting back into the park earlier in the evenings and we couldn't hop to EPCOT to eat each night like we usually do. I felt like it limited our time in each park because we had only one park choice per day. Just my two cents on hoppers. The one good part of hoppers was that we would collect FPs and then use them that night.

I didn't make any ADRs for lunch at MK because we tend to prefer counter service there and unfortunately, both boys are not into character meals anymore. Teenage boys can be so not fun sometimes.

We were hungry by 11 a.m. and the HM was down due to 'spiritual interference,' so we decided to get lunch at COLUMBIA HARBOR HOUSE while we waited in hopes it would be back up and running again. Actually, I should say I ate at CHH. My favorite sandwich, aside from one at Captain Cook's at the Poly is the Lighthouse Sandwich. I love the hummus and broccoli slaw and the bread--perfect sandwich! At least some things at WDW never change. Along with the sandwich, I had vegetarian chili and a Coke. It wasn't busy at all and I got the food quickly. DH and both boys set off to find corndogs. They, for some reason, preferred to walk in the rain to find lunch instead of getting it at CHH. The official reason they offered was 'we don't feel like chicken or fish.' Whatever. I think the real reason was the boys wanted to walk past the shooting arcade. I think we could fund an entire future WDW trip with the money they have both spent at the arcade over the past ten years.

They came back with corndogs they got from a cart in Frontierland and pronounced them old, dry and stale. See what happens when they deviate from my plan for self-serving reasons? Of course, they were still hungry and not satisfied at that point, so we needed to find lunch #2.

You may notice that we have been eating multiple meals or meals and then snacks. That's due to a couple of reasons: first, I have to fit in all the foods at WDW I have been fixated on due to research and past preferences; DS13 never eats much in one sitting because he is so picky and DS17 is simply always hungry because he is a teenager. DH just likes to eat. He has been hitting the gym since we have been home in an effort to work off all those extra meals.

So for lunch #2, we first went to the eggroll cart at MK, which is my absolute favorite. I LOVE their vegetable egg rolls. DH had to get a pork and shrimp one and liked it.

Lunch #3 was a round of cappuccino floats from Sunshine Seasons. I really miss the old citrus swirl--I was one of the odd ducks who preferred them over the Dole Whips and floats. DS13 had a Coke float. I made them wait while they enjoyed their floats to get a pineapple float.

And to top it all off, we hit Casey's for not one, but two orders of mini corn dogs. Guess DH, DS13 and DS17 hadn't hit the corn dog quota for the day. They intended to share one order, but that degenerated into chaos when
DS17 attempted to hoard them and they sent me back to the counter to get two more orders. Talk about holy grail--apparently these are the holy grail of food items in the MK, at least according DS17.

Next up: The Wave does not get a stamp of approval

Some day, I want to get to Flame Tree. Dim sum is like appetizers or small bites. So basically, it is kind of a sampler served at Yak and Yeti in a steamer basket. There were pork dumplings, steamed buns (with pork), shrimp and a few other things. DH loves dim sum. At some places, you can order it piece by piece from a cart.

:rotfl: I think I have married the adult version of your DS13. He likes pasta and vegetables, bread and apples. Raw apples. No beef, no pork, no soup, no sauces (except on pasta), no peaches, only seedless oranges and grapes, no fruit in a chicken dish, no chili, dislikes all breakfast foods such as pancakes, omlettes, bacon, french toast. Yes, he is generally healthy and is a good husband, athlete and father, so I guess I'm keeping him, :rotfl2:
He does make dinner a challenge though!
And I never never go to a breakfast buffet - not paying adult price for a man who eats two pieces of toast and coffee for breakfast!!!

On to The Wave. I forget where we were planning to eat this night. I think it might have been Kona Cafe. That's our standby place--we know we like it and we can usually get in on short notice.

I had read the menus for The Wave and the reviews had been pretty positive. We are always up for trying new places, so I got an early ADR so we could eat and then head back to the MK. I hit up the ATM in the CR lobby before dinner, because I figured it would be expensive. I was not wrong about that! DS17 was already eyeing the steak on the menu! This is one place the DDP would have been nice.

The entrance is very cool, but IMHO, the inside of the restaurant, while nice, is nothing like the entrance and bar area make it seem like it will be. In fact, and keep in mind this is simply my humble opinion, it reminded me greatly of the way the restaurant at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago used to look. Not that there is anything wrong with the Hyatt restaurant, but The Wave just didn't seem that exciting or impressive to me. Kind of dark. Lots of kids--which is fine, because I have two of them myself and it is Disney after all, but it was very loud. Expectations were too high, maybe.

They had a little bit of a line at the check-in desk and said it would be a few minutes before we would be seated. It seemed slightly unorganized. We went into the bar area and started eyeing the drink menu. Before we could order, they came to take us to the table. I liked the bar area better than the restaurant. Must have been the blue light.

Not a big fan of our server. He was somewhat condescending and he would disappear for long periods of time. We ordered drinks--passion fruit mojito and organic beer flight--both good--especially the passion fruit mojito. Kids had Coke. The service was just not attentive or seamless like I would expect in a restaurant like this.

I had the butternut squash soup accompanied by a small grilled cheese. Good, but the soup was a touch sweet and the cinnamon was too strong. The grilled cheese was very dry. The soup was not as good at the butternut squash soup at Wolfgang Puck. I also had the seasonal salad, which I really liked. I have never had spaghetti squash (novel idea) in a salad, but it was good and worked well with the edamame and mozzarella. There just wasn't enough the salad, but that wasn't their fault, since it was an appetizer, not an entree. The dressing was great and spicy.

DS17 had the grilled beef tenderloin with celery root mashed potatoes. He liked his dinner quite well. He is all about beef.--and tenderloin, all the better. DH had the cinnamon rubbed pork tenderloin with roasted vegetables. He never orders pork in restaurants when he can order seafood, but something about the description appealed to him. He said it sounded better than it tasted, but that it was 'okay.'

DS13 had kid's cheese pizza and roasted potatoes on the side. Honestly, the roasted potatoes may have been the best part of the meal. Since DS13 won't eat any potato that is not a french fry or chip, the rest of shared (er, fought over) his potatoes. His meal came on a Mickey-shaped plate, which made DS17 tease him incessantly for the rest of the night. We told DS17 that you are never too old for a Mickey plate, most especially at WDW.

For dessert, which was in all honesty the reason I wanted to eat here: the pictures of three small delicious desserts were calling to me. In reality, I didn't like them. You could blame my choices or the fact that our server mixed it up and brought one wrong dessert out of three. But we all thought they had a trace of that cold 'refrigerator' taste. Where was the 'wow' factor I was expecting? We ordered two sets of three and I can't even remember which ones we ordered. Nothing stood out like I expected it to. On a bright note, coffee was great. Finally--real coffee!

I wrote in my trip journal that night 'okay food, but definitely not amazing. No wow factor at all. Not worth the price.' It was pretty pricey--which we expected. But I can think of many other places I would have rather spent money to eat a really good meal.

I know others have had much better experiences there. That's just ours. Now we know. There is no concrete reason that we didn't like The Wave. Rather, it was a combination of factors that just missed the mark with us.

Next up: Double victory with Kona Cafe and Tutto Italia

Wow! Looks like he might not grow out of it after all! Totally agree on the buffets--not worth the price for picky eaters! We had an ADR for Tusker House but opted out after realizing it wasn't worth it for DS13 to eat macaroni and cheese and kid's cheese pizza for adult prices.

We hit that 'Disney wall' the morning after our dinner at The Wave. Getting two teens out of bed was more difficult than the years when we had to change diapers, dress them and lug strollers and a huge backpack/diaper bag out the door and onto the buses to get to the Magic Kingdom at the crack of dawn. For the life of me, I can't figure out how, but in those days we were always able to get to the parks by rope drop.

This year, forget it. All they wanted to do in the mornings was sleep, text and watch television. By the mid-point of our trip, DS13 wanted a 'real breakfast.' Guess the Fruit Loops and milk from OPR weren't cutting it for him. He whined about it the entire night after The Wave to the point there was this constant voice in my ear saying 'I want pancakes and bacon.'

We re-vamped our plan for the next day, making an ADR for Kona breakfast and plans for DS17 to waterski at the Contemporary. After waking up late, we headed to KONA CAFE for a leisurely breakfast. I like the smell of the Poly. I could be blindfolded and know the smell of the Poly anywhere. Is it just me? DH thinks I'm crazy.

Another real pressed pot of coffee. My caffeine levels finally stabilized after that pot of coffee. To give you any indication of how addicted DH and I are to coffee, our local Starbucks baristas not only know us by name, they know what we are going to order as soon as we drive up.

DH had the Samoan breakfast, which was pulled pork eggs benedict. He loved it. Very interesting idea to pair pulled pork with poached eggs and English muffins. He ate every bit.

DS17 had eggs, bacon and a biscuit with breakfast potatoes, which he also liked. He likes condiments as much as he likes regular food, so he requested honey, ketchup, mayo and jelly and went to town.

I had the macadamia nut-pineapple pancakes. So.freaking.good. And I'm not really a macadamia nut fan--in fact, I had Hawaiian granola today that has macadamia nuts, and I picked them all out. Nonetheless, these were the best pancakes I have ever had. Fluffy, sweet, nutty, delicious. I love pineapple, and used very little syrup. The pancakes didn't need it. The side of breakfast potatoes was good, too--they let me sub them for bacon/sausage.

DS13 finally got his 'real breakfast.' All was right with the world. He was in love with his pancakes and bacon, too. Ate every bite. Wanted to return to Kona every day thereafter for breakfast.

Stuffed to the point of pain, we went to the CR so DS17 could waterski. This is always his favorite part of our trips. It makes for great pictures of him on waterskis with the Contemportary and Space Mountain in the background.

Of course, all that time on the water made us hungry again, so we took the monorail back to the Poly to eat lunch at Captain Cooks.

I am a big fan of their pulled pork sandwich--only minus the pulled pork. It always causes a little bit of a problem when I order it, but it is basically pineapple-coconut bread with coleslaw, cucumbers, tomatoes and cheese. So yummy! I had to flag down a chef because obviously the touch screen does not give you an 'I don't want pulled pork on my pulled pork sandwich' button. They were nice about it and said it would just take a couple extra minutes. My DH hates it when I order stuff without meat. Like the time when we went through the Taco Bell drive-through and I ordered a double beef burrito with no beef. Employees actually came to the window to stare at us like we were a zoo exhibit or something! If you have never had a double beef burrito with no beef, substitute rice, you are missing out.

DH had the pulled pork sandwich the way it is supposed to be made and filled his quota for pulled pork (after his breakfast) for the day. DS17 had a pepperoni flatbread and devoured it.

DS13 had cheetos and a Coke and was nearly attacked by ducks.

Very full once again, we spent the afternoon at the CBR pool before our amazing dinner at TUTTO ITALIA.

On to TUTTO ITALIA We had an ADR for Marrakesh. I love their vegetable cous-cous and dessert crepes, but DH wasn't feeling it. A friend had raved about Tutto Italia and we hadn't been there since the change from Alfredo's, so I was able to get a last-minute ADR.

We went early to EPCOT so we could catch a few rides after dinner. We were seated outside right away. It was a beautiful evening and we really enjoyed the atmosphere.

We started with what will henceforth be known as my favorite drink of all time: the Italian margarita. Who knew I liked limoncello so much? Certainly not me. Well, at least I thought I liked limoncello. Quick, related side story: I was still raving about that drink when we got home and a friend and co-worker, who is Italian, brought me a small sample of limoncello at work in a tupperware container. (This is the human resources director, no less). It seriously looked like it was a sample destined for the doctor's office--small container of yellow liquid. And no, I didn't drink it at work. I brought it home and freaked out DH with it first. Anyway, it turns out I have not yet developed a taste for limoncello on its own. It tasted just like lemon cough syrup to me. But in a margarita? Delicious.

Back to our dinner at Tutto Italia. Aside from the Italian margarita, they bought a great bread basket with olive oil and ricotta cheese, along with marinated vegetables. DS17 loved the bread and dips so much they had to bring out another basket.

I had penne caprese that was so good and simple. DS17 had lemon pressed chicken and roasted vegetables and DH had farfalle with prosciutto, cream and peas. They shared and both loved their meals. DS13 had, surprise, suprise, buttered noodles with no garnish.

As good as the meal was overall, dessert was even better. DH and I split copetta sotto bosco, or zabaglione with berries and chocolate. So, so, so, so good. The berries were a little frozen, but it was still seriously good. Topped off with an espresso that we also shared, it was just about perfect.

Not to be left out of the dessert action, DS17 had the chocolate torte, which he also loved. DS13 had vanilla gelato that came with his kid's buttered noodles.

Next to dinner at Ohana, it was the most expensive meal we had all week, but it was most definitely worth it. Tutto Italia has a top spot on our list of favorites. Really good food, atmosphere, amazing desserts, efficient service and to top it all off, the Italian margarita. What's not to like?

And the icing on the cake was that we were able to ride Mission Space (the less-intense side), Test Track and Soarin with no FPs and not-too-long waits after dinner.

Next up: Wolfgang Puck Express breakfast is a hit and a miss

That Italian Margarita is something I must try, where else can you get it in Italy?

I wish I knew! I couldn't find it anywhere but Tutto Italia. Does anyone else know where to get the Italian margarita in EPCOT?

Italian margaritas ARE really tasty. I had one for the first time recently at Johnny Carino's.:thumbsup2

Yum. I wish I had one right now!

Looking forward to more!!!

I am going to try to get another review done tonight. Baseball season is in full swing (no pun intended) so it has been kind of crazy around here.

Great reviews so far...glad you likd Mama Melrose it was one of our favorites...hope to go back in November.

I was really surprised at how much we like Mama Melrose, given the fact that we didn't like it the first time we tried it. Second chances are worth it!

I'll be orderin' that Big Kahuna breakfast at Kona's next week. :goodvibes

I'm jealous--enjoy!

Lovin' your review. :thumbsup2

Thanks! I am sad that I only have a day left to write about! I will have to start planning another WDW trip.

It's never a good thing when you wake up on the final day of your WDW trip to a raging thunderstorm and pouring rain. All in all, it was okay because DS13 wasn't feeling that well and wanted to sleep in. As it turns out, he got even sicker the next day and came home with pneumonia. After missing a week of school, his chest x-ray just came back clear.

DS17 had plans to meet a friend from school at DHS later that morning, so we all slept in and then went to WOLFGANG PUCK EXPRESS for breakfast. I had been craving the cornflake french toast since reading the menu. So of course, that's what I ordered. That is also what DH ordered, and that kind of surprised me, since there were many other things on the menu I thought he would like. Sometimes he'll ask me to order for him in counter service places, while he gets a table, and after 18 years of marriage, you'd think I would know what he likes. Not really. He says I order what 'sounds good to me at the moment,' not him. Duh. That's because I am the one doing the ordering. Whatever. I definitely would have told him not to order the cornflake french toast at WPE, because I could have told him he wouldn't like it.

So what did we think of the cornflake french toast? Not much. The server told us that it is a bagel, sliced in thirds, dipped in the usual egg and milk french toast mixture, and dredged in cornflakes and cinnamon. It is then deep fried.

I like my french toast 'custard-y' and creamy, not hard. I knew it would be crunchy on the outside, but I thought that would contrast with the creaminess of the inside. Nope. It was hard, dry and crunchy--and a little too much on the cinnamon-y side. DH thought the same thing. The breakfast potatoes were really good, though, and the coffee was great.

DS17 ordered the egg and bacon breakfast flatbread and devoured it. DS13 had pancakes and bacon. Pancakes and bacon--all good with DS13.

We had issues that morning trying to decide what to do. We were meeting family for dinner at Ohana that night and knew we wouldn't be going to a park later. So we chose DHS. Bad decision especially at 10 a.m. It was PACKED.

Next up: Quick lunch at ESPN and later, dinner at Ohana...Kona...Ohana
Still later: A farewell at Grand Floridian Cafe

Hi Kizzy! I'm enjoying reading your reviews, they are so honest and tell the whole story. It sounds like you did a lot of research and planning to please a wide "audience" (your family), that's not an easy job! I'm sorry some places disappointed, glad you had some successes in there too!

I always thought the Wolfgang Puck Express cornflake french toast sounded good, but hearing that it is made with a bagel??? .... don't think that would work! I was expecting something more like Texas toast battered and rolled in cornflakes. Glad you warned me!

Thank you Kizzy, for your informative and interesting reviews. I have a few quick questions about changing your ADR's tho... Is it really as easy as it seems for you to get last minute reservations? How do you go about this when you're already in the park (or perhaps your resort)? Do you enlist the help of a concierge? TIA.

That's exactly what I was expecting! Definitely not a bagel. When the server was telling us about it, he was like 'you will want to make this at home, so I'll give you the recipe' and I was thinking 'uh, no I won't, but thanks anyway,' while smiling and nodding at him.

We didn't have a lot of trouble getting last minute ADR's. I had a full slate of ADR's when we arrived at WDW, and I'd say we kept about half of them. I would call Disney Dining from the room before we left for the day or on my cell to make the change. You can also call from the pay phones at the parks (you press two numbers, but I can't remember what the numbers are--Disney Dining could tell you). We didn't use the concierge for the ADR's. Sometimes we had to eat later than planned, but I was always able to get the restaurant we wanted. We were there from March 28-April 4, so while it was busy, it wasn't Easter week, so that probably helped.

Wonderful reviews!!! :thumbsup2
Thank you!!

Great reviews! We just got back yesterday and ate at some of the same places. Kona breakfast is the best! I'm laughing as I read your reviews, as my DS13 is EXACTLY like yours!!:lmao: It's such a struggle to find him something he'll eat, and I know we should probably do the "eat what we're having or you'll starve" thing, but I just can't. So he takes his vitamins and we do the best we can. He's going to sleep-over camp this summer, so that will be interesting!

Looking forward to the rest of your reviews!:goodvibes

It's good to know there are others like DS13! I know what you mean about the 'eat or starve' thing. The sad thing is, DS13 would really rather starve. Last time he went to camp, he ate cereal, bread and water. Oh, and one day, they had grilled cheese, so he was happy. And, he hit up the camp store for every granola bar, candy bar, bag of chips, etc., they had!

So after our huge and kind of icky breakfast at WPE, we drove to the Boardwalk and took a boat to DHS It was still raining, but the park was PACKED. This was at the end of our week and at the very beginning of the Easter week holiday, so we really saw the crowds begin to increase.

DH said he could feel the cornflake french toast in his stomach like a rock. We wandered aimlessly around DHS--FP's return times were hours later, all lines were at least 60 minutes (not that DS13 would EVER ride TOT or RnR anyway--along with being a picky eater, he won't ride roller coasters.)

We ended up taking the boat back to the Boardwalk around noon and DS13 wanted to go to ESPN, so we did.

And since we were there, we decided to order some lunch, even though we hadn't even digested the breakfast yet. DH and I had cokes and split the nachos. They were really pretty good. The brought the meat on the side and there was lots of queso and sour cream. Yummy! They were definitely big enough to share, especially after a large breakfast.

DS13 had kid's chicken strips, fries and a sundae. He loved it and played PlayStation while he ate. Relaxing lunch--not busy at all, good service and good food. DS17 was running around DHS with a friend, and I have no idea what he ate--expect he spent every penny of the money I gave him. No surprise there.

I was stressing out about ADR's for dinner at that point, because my cousin and his family, who live in the area, were going to come to Orlando for dinner and mini-golf that night. I wasn't sure whether to get ADR's for Whispering Canyon or if I could get a last minute-ADR for Ohana. As it turns out, believe it or not, they had an opening at Ohana at 9 p.m., so I took it.

I'm not at all sure how it was available, but when I called on Friday morning, there was an opening for Ohana at 9 p.m. Of course I took it. I did also try to get Chef Mickey's before asking for Ohana, but no luck.

We had a great dinner at Ohana last April and I figured it was a good place to take all the kids. My cousin and his wife have three sons.

In any event, we met up with my cousin and his family and played miniature golf at Winterland/Summerland, eventually driving over to the Poly for dinner at OHANA. We checked in about five minutes earl;y. We waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. Around 9:45, all the kids were STARVING. They said people were lingering at tables and didn't know how long it would be at Ohana, so we checked with Kona Cafe to see if they could seat us. We told the Ohana people we were going to Kona and they started to get a table set for us. Just as we walked into Kona, the guy from Ohana came racing over to tell us our table was ready if we still wanted it.

What to do?!! We all trooped back to Ohana, since that was our original intention. What I didn't realize, however, was that the festivities at Ohana had long since ended. We hit the tail end of dinner service and it was very evident, in the quality of the food, the quality of the service, and the fact they were running around cleaning everything around us. You know it is time to call it a night when they start sweeping the floor!

Now, I know it is my fault for making late ADR's, but they did seat us almost an hour late, and I am paying the same (and expensive, I might add) price that people who made 6 p.m. ADR's were paying. Those people got the whole enchilada. We did not.

We did get a great round table in the corner and were able to watch the castle change colors. In my complete planning breakdown, I didn't note that Wishes was only at 9 p.m. that night and there was no electric light parade. Oh well. They also didn't do any of the races, parade, etc. at Ohana that they did last year. No leis, no limbo, no nothing. I am guessing it was because it was so late, but the restaurant was still full, even at 10 p.m.

The dinner had good parts and not so good parts. The chicken wings and pork dumplings were okay; the salad was good; the bread was hard and dry, the noodles were sticky and congealed, the vegetables were cold. The meat I can't comment on, but everyone seemed to like the steak, shrimp and pork. Since it was last minute, I didn't order a vegetarian meal, just ate the salad, vegetables and noodles. I also stripped the dumplings and ate the outside. My DH got tired of me leaving little bundles of pork on his plate.

DS13 had kid's chicken nuggets and fries, as did two of my cousin's sons. Of course, they charged us the adult price, which I knew going in. Ohana is not a bargain for DS13 or any picky eater, for that matter--he most definitely does not eat anything they bring to the table.

The server was very rushed. I guess I can't really blame him. At 10 p.m., I kind of wanted to be going home, too. He didn't refill anything and they ran out of steak toward the end of our dinner.

The bread pudding was good, but for some reason, not nearly as good as last year. It tasted overdone--kind of hard and cold, not creamy and warm.

We had a nice time talking and catching up, and the kids had a good time together, so I guess the food was secondary. But my point is that we not only felt rushed, but the food tasted old and cold and the service was pretty old and cold, too. If they take ADR's for 9 p.m., they should provide the same quality of food and service they do earlier in the evening.

Based on our experience this year, I don't think I will be in a big hurry to return to Ohana. We all wished we had ended up at Kona Cafe after all. Once again on this trip, we ended up not liking a past favorite.

Next up: breakfast at Grand Floridian Cafe

It's funny - I've been trying to get an O'hana dinner reservation for several weeks now. They have always offered me a 9:05 seating, and I've declined, knowing that's too late for the kids to eat. I've actually been wondering if I should take it, if it's offered again when I call. Thanks to your post I know I won't. Thanks for this and all your reviews.

Hi, I just found your report and I am loving your reviews. I have 2 boys also but my oldest is 13 and my younger son is 11. My 11 year old is picky just like your 13 year old. We are doing the basic dining plan because I like to pay for everything before hand. It makes it more of a vacation for me if don't have to look at the prices at the time of the meal. If I did then I know I would be telling the kids to get the less expensive item and I know I would be doing the same. I know the dining plan will be wasted on my 11 year old but it's what works best for us. My 13 year old is a much better eater so I am not worried there.

I am also going to let the boys try the water skiing. Did your 13 year old try it too? You mentioned your older son did it. I am going to have both of them try it for the first time. The guy on the phone told me if they are having a hard time with it he will switch to tubing. I am going para sailing and I can't wait. I wanted the boys to do it with my but they are too chicken. My DH is not into either of those things so he will just watch us have fun.

Looking forward to your review of the Grand Floridian Cafe. We have a dinner ADR there and we my do a breakfast there one of the days.

kizzy- thanks again for all your work!!!

we wee staying at th Boardwalk (rented points from friends) and shared Nachos at ESPN. we REALLY liked it. it was filling for the 2 of us, and very good!

I'm SO sorry to hear about your Ohanas experience. we ate there once, berfore wishes, and it was fun (even though it's just hubby and me). I SO agree hat if they take ressies for 9 pm, you should be guaranteed the same experience as those with 6 pm ressies (or they should tell you otherwise when you make the ressies)

once we decided to eat at San Angel for EMH. there were a few restauants open for EMH, and we thought it would be nice to watch Illuminations, then relax with a late dinner and not have to fight the crowds to get to the bus stop. It took MANY tries, and I was so happy to finally secure those reservations! we felt almost guilty eating there.! It was obvious the staff was anxious to get home. the relaxing ambience we were seeking, the slow relaxing dinner after Illumintions, turned out to be "here's your drink, here'syourappetizer(it was included on the DDP at the time), here'syour meal, dessertand check, sorry if we're sweeping around you.
as a waitress, this last Easter we had our last seating at 6pm. but most people came for the brunch, which ended at 2 pm. a very nice family had ressies for 6. there was no one else in the restaurant and they kept apologizing for keeping me there! :confused3 I kept telling them... "stay! have another cup of coffee! have dessert! relax! I chatted with them,JUST to keep them there and make them feel comfortable(even though I was tired and really wanted to go home) why? they expected a nice, relaxing dinner and that's what they were going to get!
thanks again for your report!!!

I think you are making the right decision not to get late ADR's at Ohana, based on our experience. Last year, we ate at Ohana's around 7 p.m., and things were hopping. Plus, the food was A LOT better! Maybe there is a reason those late ADR's pop up at the last minute!

My DH13 did not waterski--he is too chicken. In the past, he has gone tubing at Disney and liked it. DH skiied with DS17 last year--it was the highlight of his trip that he was able to get up on one ski. This year, only DS17 skiied and tubed. They will let you tube, wakeboard, and ski all in one trip, depending on what you want to do. An hour is long enough to do all three, depending on how many people are going. In the case of DS13 last year, they drove slower when he was tubing. DS17 tends to be a daredevil and they adjusted their speed for him. Have fun parasailing! DS17 wants to try that some time.

I was thinking of doing the 1/2 hr water skiing for the 2 boys...do you think that is enough time? If I bump it up to an hour I may try it with the boys since I have never done it. I am trying to save a little money because aside from this, I am doing the parasailing and we are renting a cabana at the pool at the GF for 2 afternoons and they raised the price from $60.00 to $100.00.:scared1: The trip is all paid off but all these extra's really add up.

So...what do you think, should I do 1/2 hr. for them or 1 hour for the 3 of us?

It depends on how much both kids will want to ski/tube. I think I would probably go ahead and do an hour. Even with just my DS17 skiing, he would want an hour. By the time you get out on the water, get the skis on, etc., a half an hour goes pretty fast. If both boys want to try it out, I would definitely say an hour, and if you want to ski too, then go for it! They are helpful about teaching you--they were really patient in working with DS13 to learn to ski two years ago. Make sure you take your camera, because you can get some great shots with the Contemporary and Space Mountain, as well as the monorail, in the background. They supply towels on the boat and you can take water or drinks if you want.

We woke up on our last morning to beautiful sunshine--go figure. It's always that way when you have to leave. We slept in a little after our late night at Ohana. In addition, DS13 didn't feel well when he woke up. Gotta love it when you have to travel 1,500 miles with a sick kid. At least we were stopping overnight to visit family in the Atlanta area, so we had a little bit of a break.

DS13 was hungry and said he wanted to have a 'good' breakfast, so I made an ADR that morning at the GRAND FLORIDIAN CAFE for breakfast based on the good reviews it had been getting before we left. They had several openings, so we opted for 8:45 a.m. That last time we were at GF was at 1900 Park Faire for breakfast in 2000, so it was fun to return.

We packed up and headed to GF, where we were seated right away at a nice table in the back by a window. The only complaint I have about the breakfast was the service. As was the general theme this trip, the service was often lacking. No refills on water, she forgot to bring the ketchup
DS17 requested; it took a long time for the food and then the check to come, etc.

DS13 had pancakes and bacon and milk; DS17 had the croissant stuffed with mascarpone cheese and berries, which he loved, and breakfast potatoes. I had the American breakfast with scrambled eggs, toast and breakfast potatoes. DH had eggs benedict, but not the lobster eggs benedict. He is not a big fan of lobster. Last summer in Maine, he neglected to have a lobster roll and had a crab salad roll instead. Who doesn't eat lobster while in Maine? I think he secretly regretted that decision. Like I said earlier, he never orders what I think he should. I guess I can't really talk, because I don't eat lobster either. But still. When lobster eggs benedict is on the menu, one should order it, IMHO.

He was happy with his regular eggs benedict and we also had coffee and orange juice. It was a nice way to end the trip--relaxing and good breakfast food. Just not great service. It was hard not to be jealous of the people who were obviously heading into the parks. I always have this last minute 'let's add another day to our vacation' thought and then DH brings me crashing back to reality by refusing to consider it.

On the way out, we stopped in the GF shop to pick up chewable Tylenol for DS13. Among his many quirks is the fact that he won't (or can't) swallow pills. Therefore, because he is 13 and weighs 125 lbs., he has to chew six tablets for every dosage. This drives DH and DS17 nuts because they think he should 'man up' and just swallow pills like a normal person. They also think that about his eating habits, his fear of roller coasters, his refusal to waterski, etc., but that's another story.

Up next: Alcoholic beverages around WDW were a clear winner while service at many WDW restaurants was a clear loser
