Hello everyone,
I teach a collegiate course on human communication at Western Illinois University. You may remember me from such activities as, "Kevin Klose helps with speech class dining review assignment." (Troy McClure anyone?)
At this point in the semester, we are in the midst of learning about computer-mediated-communication. Specifically, they are learning about online fan communities. We have been utilizing the DIS as our example of such a community. However, instead of just hearing about this community, I want them to learn by experiencing it. Pete's "special child," I mean...the podcast board, was my first thought in terms of where to turn.
Here's where you (all) come in:
This Friday (April 17th) from 10 - 10:50a EST and 12 - 12:50p EST Pete has arranged to open a special chat room for my class. My hope is that they can come and chat with any members who can make it. I'm not looking for anything fancy, I just want them to step inside an online fan community and see "how it works." They'll all have user names that end in "wiu."
They may ask questions, they may not. Either way - I hope you'll help in sparking interaction. Feel free to use emoticons (is the dancing banana available in chat?) and chat abbreviations, b/c I think that would be important for them to see.
All I ask is that you reply to this thread if you plan on attending, so I know how many to expect.
Thanks in advance and I hope to see you in chat on Friday.
Any questions - please let me know.
- Dave

The question is...will Kevin and John join us so that your students get the full effect of the taunting the we are subjected to?

I'll be at work, I'd love to participate - but I'm not sure if I could pop in and out of chat and back to a work page on my computer......(don't want to look like I'm not working) DUHGreg, maybe you could do it! You have more freedom than I do (Greg and I work together, I'm his secretary (as well as the secretary to other partners in the firm).)

Itis looking good!
I have just finished running various business reports in formats my boss has never seen. Profibility by vendor / customer comparing Q1 09 to Q1 08 to Q1 07. Net margin by product. And a few more fun action packed 20 plus page reports. Hey, we have to look at every thing to see how the ecomomy is effecting business and how we can modify operations.
It should take him a couple of hours to go through them. As long as he does not ask too many questions, I should be good to chat!
Students: Please remember, I am a Dis Fan, not a Role Model. Do not attempt this at your own job. I am a trained professional.

Hi everyone,
Well...the day has arrived.
I will try to be in the chat room a few minutes before 10 & 12 to let everyone know my students will be in shortly.
It will take me a couple of minutes to "brief" them on the experience - so they may not starting chatting exactly on the hour.
I also never imagined I'd receive such a great response from everyone (thank you!). So, since it's possible there could be 35 members plus 20 students, we might need to keep things a level down from normal chat warp speed.
:scared1:
Feel free to interact with my students and ask questions. As a reminder, all/most of their user names should end in "wiu."
See you in a few hours!

Is it okay to stop in unannounced? I have a meeting to go to this morning and am not sure how long it will drag out so I didn't want to commit and then not show up. But I would love to participate if time allows :flower3:

Absolutely!
I'm guessing we'll have a few who will see the room open and stop by - unaware of what they're getting into. :)
Hope to see you there.
