Anaheim to SD zoo in one day?

We are spending 4 nights in Anaheim late Sept. Originally we were going to spend a few nights in SD but that didn't happen, so I need to know if it is possible to drive from Anaheim (Sheraton park) to San Diego, visit the zoo for the day, and drive back.

How long do you think it will take to drive (probably mid-week) end Sept?

I really want to visit SD zoo, but don't want to spend most of the day in the car.

I think it's definitely do-able from Anaheim in a day.

Ever talked to a local Southern Californian about how long it takes to get somewhere? Any time estimate will be followed by "depending on traffic (DOT)." :)

I might suggest to look at your itinerary and see if you can go to the zoo on a weekend day. Two benefits: much less rush-hour traffic on the 1.5-2 hour drive (DOT of course), and it will get you out of DL on a weekend day when it is more crowded at DL.

The zoo is great. We spent about 6 hours there last fall with our kids. We've found online coupons for up to $8, which brings the Best Value ticket down to the regular prrice. The Best Value gives you the tram tour and the skyway, saving the legs!

We have done this at least five times. Makes for a long day but very doable.
