Greetings Everyone: There has been some interest over on the DIS Unplugged board about getting a group together for next year's marathon. This would in no way compete with the WISH team. If anything, I would think this might bring some new interest to the WISH team from the DIS Unplugged forum.
Anyhow, Kathy (aka safetymom) is working with Disney Endurance to become an official recognized group for the races. This would give us guaranteed entry slots for the races. There's a number of polls over on the DIS Unplugged boards trying to gauge interest. Check them out if you are interested.

Is it mentioned anywhere that there is a racing team on the dis already and for those that are interested to come on over to the competition/events thread? Just wondering.
I had contacted OhMom for information for a contact at disneysports so we, "WISH racing team" could get more information from them and see us as a big team that sends alot of people to disney. I was given a name that was provided by safetymom. I guess she's taken it a step further.
More WISHers would be fun!! Also to get a bit more recognition would be great!

If this is to raise money for Give Kids the World, I think it's a wonderful idea.
I think it's a good idea anyway to unite and give us guaranteed entry slots, but if it's associate with GKTW it's really special.

Racey TracyYes, WISH has been getting a lot of attention on the DIS Unplugged podcast and boards. Check out this blog that safetymom wrote about this year's half marathon. WISH was very prominent, and I think she really captured the spirit of our team. The group on the DIS Unplugged board would be a fund raiser for Give Kids the World.

Also, I have contact information for the Disney Endurance Series if you want to try to get an official WISH racing team together. All they require is a 10 room block for the contract.

Racey TracyI wonder this same thing. I'm glad to hear of a group that is enthusiasticly pursuing the events, fundraising and organizing. It does not seem that the Podcast group is joining WISH Team, rather forming one themselves.
It appears to me that we have two threads independently discussing similar events.

I am sorry to hear that some are upset that we have been investigating having a DIS room block and marathon registration. This is a fund raising event for GKTW.
There is plenty of room for both groups in the marathon. I know the WISH team will be promoted along with any of the folks that decide to be part of our group.
You are more than welcome to post on the threads where we are discussing our plans. If you have any questions or concerns please send me a PM. Thank you.

I don't think anyone is upset, just kinda strange. The WISH racing team I know has been around the disboards for sometime. (I came on boards only last year) Just curious as to having a separate team from one online group. I guess if that's what's going to happen then that's ok. Would be great to just have one group representing the disboards at Disney races as our racing teams shirts show. ?? Again I think it is just kinda weird, but then again I am not in charge of anything. I just post and do the races and meet up with my WISH team mates and have a good time.

I plan on participating in whatever happens. I am active on both boards. I don't think that the DIS Unplugged board would take away from the WISH boards. I think that what is being researched by Kathy would benefit everyone since this is all part of the DIS Boards. Since what Kathy is working on is part of a general fundraising effort by Pete (founder of DIS Boards) and the gang for Give Kids the World, I would encourage everyone to take part in that and not try to go as a separate group.

I too am a little confused by all of this. I started listening to the DIS Unplugged podcast a couple months ago, but don't visit that board at all.

What exactly does guaranteed entry slots mean? What other benefits does being an officially recognized group provide?

I know neither of you probably mean for your message to come across this way, but it almost sounds like we have to be in one group or the other. Why can't I be part of the WISH team AND help support Give Kids the World? It would be nice to explore how we can bring these two groups together.
One thing that came to mind was some sort of unifying apparel. A shirt is the obvious choice, but there are probably WISH members who don't want to give up wearing the lime green WISH shirts. And on the flip side, there may be podcast listeners who want to participate but aren't ready to join WISH yet. Instead of shirts, maybe we could have DIS Unplugged sweatbands or arm bands or silicone bracelets? I thought of this because a bunch of the Princess 1/2 WISHers all purchased a custom BondiBand for that race that was unique to the group. It could be something that comes with a marathon room package booked through Dreams Unlimited. Or if a WISH member wanted to support GKTW, we could purchase one for say $10 and feel as though we're part of the DIS Unplugged team too.

I know I for one feel very closely connected to both groups. I am a member of WISH, and I am a loyal supporter of the podcast. I don't see why people have to be exclusively one or the other. I have WISH friends, I have podcast friends, and I have WISH/podcast friends. I think it might be similar to the situation that happened with the Disney Running folks. We certainly have people that affiliate with both of those groups as well. I don't think anyone's trying to force anyone to be one group or another. I just wanted to throw the option out there if there were any WISHers that were interested.

I love the idea of having the option to buy a hat/visor or Bonidand type thing to signify we support GKTW and the podcast. I love the podcast and am a faithful listener but also really want it clear that I am a member of the WISH team. I would be happy to pay a small amount (in the $10-20 range) to help support the cause but really don't want to be involved in major fundraising and begging friends and coworker to sponsor me for my running-- those who can do this are great (awesome job to Dave for the Muddy Buddy efforts) but I just am not in a position to do so right now.
I think it would be great if everyone were part of WISH-- the more the merrier-- with no obligation to fund raise but the option to show support for GKTW in some small way.

I am not a DIS podcast fan. (I find it boring as all get out for some reason..)
I went to the boards. Lots of polls but as far as I can find NO information on WHY they are taking the polls or what they are doing LOL!
However, it does appear they want to be a charity run and I expect Disney has a minimum "expectation" for their "charity" runners. (In other words $10 a pop for a bondiband isn't going to cut it LOL!)
I am not willing to do the fundraising! I wish those that do lots of success, but I am still a little vauge on if this is like Team in Training where they get the "Free" trip for the fundraisng. (I perfer to donate to things where the overhead is lower)

There is no overhead on this event. Any money raised goes directly to the charity.

There is no minimum expectation for fundraising for Give Kids the World. Disney has no expectation for their charity groups at all. Disney just wants a minimum number of rooms booked. Listen, I'm not trying to recruit WISHers to "defect" from this racing team to a DIS Unplugged team. I love the WISH team, and they got me going. I would have never run a marathon without the WISH team. However, now I have a new "challenge" and goal. If people want to join in great, if it's not for them that's great too. Nobody is asking anyone to do any fundraisers. If you want more information about this group then go ahead and ask. I just wanted to put the link up for people that might listen to the podcast, but weren't frequenters of the boards over there.

:confused3 I admit I'm really confused as to why being part of the DISboards GKTW and also a member of WISHers is seen as a conflict by some. :confused3 I am on a WISH team ...Love it.., but I also love the Podcast and their efforts to raise funds for GKTW.

I have to admit I thought it was odd that there was suddenly two different running groups from within the same website. I've just kept my mouth shut. :rolleyes1 WISH has been here awhile so I totally understand the sentiments that have been expressed here. Of course, it is wonderful that some are taking the initiative to help others thru their running. I have often thought about how I could run for Make A Wish, maybe doing my own firstgiving page. Like others, I don't want to have to raise a huge amount, but would like to raise some within my means that I think would also help motivate me and help a cause I'm fond of.
Regardless, what about having shirts that combine the two for those that are part of WISH, but who also want to run for this charity? You could have the GTKTW logo on a lime green shirt with maybe WISH on it as well, maybe on the backside? Then there could also be the plain GTKTW shirts and the regular WISH lime green shirts for those that want to remain separate? I saw All Ears now has a group starting headed up by Mike Scopa. Looks like we have lots of Disney running groups going now. I personally don't listen to DIS Unplugged. I have a few other podcasts I listen to occasionally, but can't keep up with them as it is. I also only stick to the WISH board on the DIS, I visit another board for my DVC fix. :rolleyes1

I have to admit I am a little surprised by the us vs. them mentality because it isn't at all how I look at it. I look at WISH as a subset of the DIS experience with the Podcast being another subset. It feels to me like the GKTW idea is an over-reaching initiative that includes all of us, podcast group, WISH group, DISboards group.
I participate in the WISH area and Podcast area so I think this is great. Plus it opens the marathon experience up to new people which is really what the underlying idea of the WISH boards are...Inspiring health.
Just my 2 cents.
Of course with that being said it is looking like it will be the 2011 marathon I come down to do next so just make sure we do another one of these next year :thumbsup2

I agree with you. That is kind of what I was aiming at yesterday. We are all part of the DIS boards. I am probably most active in the WISH forums, and it is nice that there are the smaller communities here where we are able to get to know people better.
I have considered doing the All Ears group, but I would first and foremost like to take part in anything that is happening on these boards.
That being said, I would like to have a combined shirt for those who want it. I plan on ordering my WISH shirt whenever the next order takes place and I have my lime green tiara Bondi Band from the princess half, so I am all set.

Might be easiest to take a WISH shirt and iron-on a GKTW logo. If we add anything to the current shirts, that requires a new graphics setup fee. Also means we'd have to keep track of two different batches of shirts from each printer.
If you go the other way with a GKTW shirt and add the WISH logo, you will need to get permission in writing to use the WISH logo from Sunny (plutosmyfav) who holds the copyright. Check out the Welcome to the WISH team thread for info on use of the WISH logo.
THe silicone bracelets are pretty cool. I got the WISH bracelets from http://www.reminderband.com.

I've hesitated to join in this discussion because of the possibility for misunderstandings and miscommunications and hurt feelings. But then I figured you all know me well enough to either excuse my poor choice of words or to call me out on my BS. :rotfl2:
What I understood Dave to be doing was informing WISHers of things in the planning stages with the DIS Unplugged. Just to let people know of things going on in another subforum. I wasn't under the impression that they were trying to compete, combine, or collaborate with WISHers in terms of January planning, shirts, etc. What I read was that Dave and safetymom (and others, I assume) have done a lot of ground work for the DIS Unplugged group and we're invited to join in the room blocks and planning and fundraising and other assorted festivities--:yay: for more festivities :drinking1--if we want to become involved.
But as far as I know, the WISH subforum and DIS Unplugged are not working together on becoming an officially recognized group. It's DIS Unplugged that would be the group, right? And WISH isn't involved in GKTW--again, as far as I know. Separate entities within the 216,000 members of the DISboards. Strange, but not unexpected given the loose nature of the DIS community.
So you can go to the January events as a WISHer and not an Unplugged DISer--no problem. Or go as an Unplugged DISer and not a WISHer--no problem. Raise funds for GKTW or not. Go as both a WISHer and a Unplugged DISer. All these are ways to meet other DISers, and to share in the challenges and joys of marathon weekend.
Bottom line...I agree with Lily's assessment, who says everything more succinctly than I do:
I'm glad to hear of a group that is enthusiasticly pursuing the events, fundraising and organizing. It does not seem that the Podcast group is joining WISH Team, rather forming one themselves.

Oh, one last thing. (Don't I always have one of those?) I don't think anyone's really upset about the possibilities of more than one running group or that there's an "us vs. them" mentality. It seems that there will be two running groups, with many individuals belonging to both. And I think we're all just concerned with having our words/intentions misunderstood.

I like the idea of having an iron-on GKTW logo for my WISH shirt; especially since that seems like the easiest way to go.
I'm glad that some of you don't see a problem with being part of the WISHers team and also part of the Podcast GKTW team. I tend to oversimplify things, which is why I never thought of it as a conflict.

No conflict in my mind either-- sorry if it came off that way. I just want to have the DIS unplugged people feel welcome at WISH if they want to be here. If not, no biggie. I am hugely grateful to all of the wonderful people on these boards and their support for me and fellow WISHers at marathon weekend (and other events) and want to share that warmth with everyone.

Ok, jumping in here with a comment about the iron-on idea.....I thought that those did not work well on tech-material shirts. Would a button work better? Or would that be uncomfortable to wear for those who run?

I think there is a certain type of iron-on that is supposed to work for running shirts.

Hello,
Many WISH team members are members of other running affiliations, some charitable, local and on-line. There is nothing wrong with having more than one affiliation. The more camaraderie and support the better!
However, there does need to be cohesiveness within the representation of any given team. For instance, WISHers who also are Team In Training members can't combine the WISH logo with the TnT shirt and vice versa.
This situation is a little different since both "teams" are from DISboards.
However, for the same reason as the example above, there needs to be cohesiveness within a team representation and therefore combining the two shirts is not a good idea.
For the protection of the WISH racing team's name and vision I copyrighted the design a while back. Mostly so an evil person couldn't come along and start producing WISH merchandise and sell it. But also as a way to keep necessary control over our team's visibility. If everyone modified the shirts to their particular interests we would lose what is so special-- our identity!
I know there will be a great solution to letting DISboard runners identify with both Unplugged and WISH, but I ask that it not be in the form of combining logos, slogans on one shirt.
Thanks,
Sunny

I kind of agree with Sunny here. I'm not sure a WISH shirt combined with a DIS Unplugged/GKTW shirt would work. I think I may wear whatever shirt the DIS Unplugged comes up with combined with my WISH hat.

I have to say that I am not a fan of "combining" the shirts. Mainly because I will not be running for GKTW and don't want folks to assume I am. It's not that I don't think it's a good charity etc, but if I don't do the fundraising I don't deserve the "praise" or acclaim or just the "association" that implies I did. I don't think that's fair to those who do actually raise money! (IF ANY OF THAT MAKES SENSE LOL!)
It would be kind of like wearing at TNT jersy and doing nothing. Everyone would assume you were doing a "good thing" when you were just running LOL! I don't want to take away from those who do the good deed.
If you are doing the fundraising then good for you and you deserve a "special" shirt showing your committment!

At this time there are no plans to combine the logos on one shirt. As plans develop they will be shared with everyone.
