I am going to do a suggested delivery date so that the gifts are distributed each day of the cruise. My goal is that not everyone does delivery on the same date... I read about that happening and people were disappointed...
I know that Stephanie and I had a specific date to deliver on our Dec 6 cruise. In Dec of 2008 we did it the third day out and we had more participants but it really worked out. Everytime we came back to the cabin, there were gifts. It was so much fun.
I do like the suggested delivery date cause we will have so much else to do that I would like to know when I could do it and get it done.

I had the same questions. I found out from my bank that you can get American Express Travellers checks in EUROS :) For my bank you have to order them and it has cost of $10 per order, but it's so much better than the outrageous fees paid overseas. Worst comes to worst, we can use them on our ship board account after we leave Europe.
We are planning to use them to pay for hotel and other expenses in Barcelona so we don't have to use our bankcards overseas. The last time we did, the fees and terrible exchange rate made my $20 Mexican blanket cost close to $40.
Also, if I'm buying the Euros NOW and the exchange rate continues to worsen, I'm making money (or at least things are not costing as much . . .LOL).
Hope that helps, too :)
I use BofA as well. I think they are about the norm in what they get (bid/ask). I am just watching the exchange rate to see if the Dollar gets any better as we have been hovering around 0.70 Euros for $1 but a year ago it was 0.80 Euros for $1.
Also know that BofA is partners with banks outside the US and will not charge ATM fees at BNP Paribas (France) & Barclays (United Kingdom) - Use your ATM card or check card within our Global ATM Alliance in the countries shown with no fees.
Here is some info from the BofA FAQs page:
Using your Check Card or ATM Card in international countries (http://www.bankofamerica.com/deposits/checksave/index.cfm?template=lc_faq_ATM#qn39)
Will I get a better exchange rate using my Check Card or ATM Card?
Check Cards may give you a better exchange rate than you'll receive at currency exchange bureaus.
What are the fees for using a Check Card or ATM Card in a foreign country?
Withdrawals, deposits, transfers, payments and balance inquiries made at ATMs in foreign countries outside of the ATM Global Alliance will be charged a $5.00 fee.
In addition, an International Transaction Fee will be charged for ATM Card and Check Card transactions made for foreign purchases or ATM cash withdrawals in currency other than U.S. Dollars, regardless of whether or not the transaction occurred at an ATM in a country covered in the ATM Global Alliance. The International Transaction Fee will be 3% of the U.S. Dollar amount for each converted purchase or 1% of the U.S. Dollar amount for each converted ATM cash withdrawal. This International Transaction Fee will appear as a separate item on your banking statement for each international transaction.
Additionally, I have learned from past trips - make sure your PIN is only 4 digits. Given the last statement above - I try to use my Capital One Credit Card as much as possible outside of the US and bring cash/travelers checks with me to avoid the International Transaction Fee.
Thanks so much guys! :grouphug: That really helped. I continued to look into it & what I think I'm gonna do is only get euros for my parent's gift & then a small amount for myself before we go.
Then, after looking into it even more, I found some interesting ideas. Capital One credit cards do not charge ANY currency exchange fees at all & HSBC's Premier World MasterCard has no foreign transaction fee. Also, HSBC atm fee is only 1% for foreign atm transactions, as opposed to boa $5 fee + 3%. So I'm thinking about getting a capitol one card & opening an hsbc checking account. I've actually been wanting to change back to hsbc rather than boa, since they closed my local boa branch.
All the reading I've been doing says that it really isn't a good idea to get the majority of you euros here, as you will get a better rate over there. Also, they say that atms give the best exchange rate. And they say if merchants offer to charge you in USD, this is a way for them to charge you even more. Just have them charge in euro. :thumbsup2
This may be all comon knowledge for most on the boards, but I figured I'd pass along these little tips I came across just in case. :)
Thanks again guys! :)

I have the Charles Schwab check card and credit card. both of the have no transaction fees or foreign fees. They said all i need to worry about is the exchange rate. Also the Charles Schwab check card allows me to you any atm in the world fee free (receive refund at end of month).

So ever since I got home last week from my Grandmother's, I've had a fear/feeling that I carried home a mouse, and we're not talking about Mickey or Minnie. When I was unpacking things I had packed from Grandma's that included some turkey sausage links, I discovered there were mouse drippings in the bag and a little nibble on the plastic. There was also a Honeybell fruit that had some of the citrus rind nibbled off. UGH!
I had no idea if I acquired the critter from the time I left the bag on the floor of the garage or if it made itself a home from the time the car was in the Volkswagen dealership's service garage (I had just picked the car up a day prior). I didn't know if I carried this mouse into my house in a bag, if it was still in the car, or maybe the turkey sausage was nibbled at before the bag got into the car. Who knew, right? Well, I put a cookie in my trunk to see if it would get nibbled on. It hadn't been...until today.
OMG! I have a mouse in my CAR!!! :scared1: I'm such a girl when it comes to these things! I cannot believe I have to set a peanut buttered mouse trap in my car tomorrow!
Well, it is official we will have to bow out of the WBTA in order to pay for our EBTA.....
Although it's a shame you'll miss out cruising with us, I am just glad you still get to cruise across the Atlantic! I know you'll have a fabulous time, and it's just awesome that you'll be going in a blink of an eye!
Woohoooo,
We're in with the in crowd, at the Praktik Rambla. We were looking yesterday, but only 1 double room; then last night, none. Just looked out of curiousity and there were two; so we took 'em.
Sweet! Welcome to the bunch!
....I have a bad case of the Monday's....
I have to admit this made me smile. I could just hear the intonation of the word "Mondays". Hope the rest of the week is cheery for you!
Kimberly,
I'm so glad to hear your grandma is doing better! :)
Thanks, the mother-daughter cruise was a lot of fun! I bet that was great to be with your grandmother for her "first times" on the ship!
As the others have said, awesome job on the hotel spreadsheet.
Krista
Thanks, Krista!
We have Grandma's post surgery appointment tomorrow. She's hoping that he doesn't have a physical therapist come into the house. I think she's doing well enough that it won't be necessary, but if I could only get her to use her walker to walk more straight and upright! She even says it feels better to use the walker, but she's stubborn like me!
....I am sick have been so since the end of last week. I couldn't get into the doctor until tomorrow. It is kicking me in the patootie.
Yuck! Sorry to hear that. Hopefully he/she will give you the right prescription to feel better really soon! :flower3:

Just a quick update on ground transport from Barcelona hotels to the port, I have responded to all those have expressed an interest so far and we now have 31 people interested.
If you want to add your name to the list (no obligation at this stage), please send me a PM so I don't miss it in the general chatter.

Also WHERE do we go to meet the ship on 9/18? I saw some folks were putting together busses again (smart to have room for luggage this time after the fiasco in the EB REPO - never forget the angry Japanese driver . . .LOL). I am thinking that hubby might want to go it alone this time . . .
Stephen had a cunning plan to book a 50+ seater bus and then only have about 30 people on it - I think we all learnt a lesson after the EB Panama - though it was super entertaining, not something that we especially need to relive :rotfl2:
We can do whatever, I would just hate for a group to get all their goodies in the first half of the trip...
I amopen to whatever - I am just tabulating who gives to who... :)
I'd prefer to deliver "whenever suits" rather than a schedule. Last time we just did it deck by deck as time allowed which worked well for our schedule.
I'm so excited about my first Disney Cruise and whilst i'm a Disney theme park vetran the whole cruise thing is new to me.
Welcome aboard! :)

Well we're even then with smiles and laughter since you did that same for me with your "bad case of the Mondays"!
It's 2 am here, and like the last two nights, I'm wide awake way past the time I should be. Although, I'm weakening, thank God! So you're not alone. Last night I got to sleep about 4 am then had to get up at 7 am, so you would have thought I would sleep fine tonight. I think I missed my window of opportunity when I was really exhausted, which was 9:30! Sleep tight soon!

Well you're doing a fab job. The other option is we comprimise on the two sides and do a 1st half of the cruise 2nd half of the cruise thing? This way people like me don't feel too enclosed in "you have to do it today" and people who want to have their gifts spread out still get at least part of this? What do people think?
Half and half is a great idea for those who don't want to be tied down to a specific day. I would be happy with this :goodvibes:goodvibes
When are you planning the dis meet, we were thinking of having an open house on thursday???????????????????????????????
thoughts on the back of a post card guys please :banana:
What time will this go on till ..... we don't get to our hotel until about 10pm
on the Thursday ...... so it depends how far away from thr main drag you are located ie. walking distance. Would love to meet up if it's not too late and you are close.

no good for us then ... we don't get in until 10pm on the Thursday ... we will have to wait to meet everyone on the Friday evening get-together. Shame because your apartment looks to be in a stunning location with that wonderful view of the harbour.
By the looks of Kimberley's amazing ( and very clever ) chart there will be quite a few people already there on the Thursday though, so it is a lovely idea. Maybe we could change flights to get in a bit earlier ....

I am on the 10 day prior and I have us "ashore" at 7 am - so guessing we will be docking earlier and then waiting for clearance to go ashore starting around then. In 2007 I remember making a 10 am flight and know there was a group of us who were first off the ship so we could make our flights.

Thats the time on DCL website so I would think she would be coming in around 5 as they have to clear immigration by 7?

Also WHERE do we go to meet the ship on 9/18? I saw some folks were putting together busses again (smart to have room for luggage this time after the fiasco in the EB REPO - never forget the angry Japanese driver . . .LOL). I am thinking that hubby might want to go it alone this time . . .
The buses for the EB Repo were quite the experience! You must have been on the same bus as we were. Were you at the Grand Californian? I'll never forget the bus driver punching the bus... :confused3

Stephen had a cunning plan to book a 50+ seater bus and then only have about 30 people on it - I think we all learnt a lesson after the EB Panama - though it was super entertaining, not something that we especially need to relive :rotfl2:
I know we had planned open seats on those buses for the EBPC cruise but not enough.;)
I will have less luggage this time then that trip. Only a checked bag and carry on and maybe a personal item- no wheelchair or crutches or boot.:cool1::thumbsup2:banana:
Well we finally made it home. Candida is still recovering. Thanks to everyone. Now it will take me a couple weeks to catch up on all the posting everyone has been up to. :surfweb:

Mouse Update
Several of my friends on Facebook brought to my attention that they personally or know of someone who has had a mouse in their car, and the darn thing ate wires, causing bigger issues! UGH! Well that frightened me as much as the idea that I could see that thing run across my dashboard! So I got two traps set in the trunk and put one-half of the back seat down to help him get to the peanut butter and for me to keep an eye on them without jarring the car. At sundown, he hadn't made an appearance yet. Hopefully overnight!! I won't be driving that car until he's outta there!

LOL! It's OK Kimberly...they aren't for everyone! If you would have asked me a year ago if I would have loved any other mice other than Mickey and Minnie, I would say no way...but then Snoopy gave birth to Remy and I fell in love with them!
They are still at my parent's house because my mom and my sister couldn't part with them! They just love my mom! It's sounds crazy, but they know when she is around and they beg for food!
I hope you catch your mouse soon! :)

I'm still suffering some pain after eating since the pancreatitis so will have to be a bit careful what and how much I eat!!:eek: Also no alcohol!! Not a problem really, but I did used to like a glass of wine with a meal, and where better than onboard the Magic!! Ah well, at least I will be onboard.:rotfl:

I took grandmother for her three week post-surgery appointment yesterday. He was very pleased with her progress and the look of the long incision. So we're very grateful for that! He wants to see her again in 3 more weeks.
Afterwards, we went to this little country store. Seriously...it's a "country store", too! I felt like I went back in time several years! Anyways, that trip demonstrated to me that I probably should stay with her a bit longer than I was anticipating because she didn't hold up very long. I also need to get her out and walk more to build up more strength. Since the weather is not great for her to walk outside much, I'm thinking we'll need to make some trips to some stores a few times a week. That's the most sneaky way I can get her to exercise it more. ;) Otherwise, she's suggested going to her church to walk the loop in the building. Regardless, she's on the mend!
...They are still at my parent's house because my mom and my sister couldn't part with them! They just love my mom! It's sounds crazy, but they know when she is around and they beg for food!...

I think we stayed one night at that Best Western in 2005...it was bad. We had stayed at Paradise Pier for a few nights before that so switching to there was not fun.

I'd prefer to deliver "whenever suits" rather than a schedule. Last time we just did it deck by deck as time allowed which worked well for our schedule.
I'll have to agree with this. I'll probably deliver a floor of fe gifts while I'm waiting for the laundry.

No, what was Dixie Landings is now Port Orleans Riverside, and yes it is a lovely resort.
Saratoga Springs is a large DVC resort across from Downtown Disney. We really like spending our first nights there and walking to DTD a few times. We are DVC members there.

Just popping in to say hi!
Had some bad news here yesterday: DH has been relieved of partaking in the grind of full-time employment. While this situation surely has its bad points, we can manage and prospects look very good for him to be burdened again with being an employee in the near future. We are looking at it as an opportunity for badly needed change for him.
That being said, we will be eating crackers and tea to be able to afford the cruise and out upcoming total bathroom gut renovation! Fortunately, I love tea and don't mind crackers. Canceling the cruise is out of the question, and we need the bathroom reno before the bathtub falls into the laundry room below!
Hello to all the new joinees! I'm so looking forward to this cruise and meeting you all.
Wish us luck as we are without a bathtub (or main bathroom) for the next 3-4 weeks. Our renovator friend is also a snow plower so wish us clear skies so we can be done quickly.

We are off to Florida next week!! :yay:We leave here this coming Sunday for the airport hotel and are flying out to Orlando on Monday 8th. We are there for 6 weeks and have a 7 night Magic Western on the 20th February. :yay: Not planning on doing anything at all, just getting off in port to go for a walk. going to be very lazy.
Have a wonderful time Marilyn and give our love to the Magic  I can only dream of being in Florida for 6 weeks ... you are very lucky :woohoo:
Good morning everyone. I have been away from here for a long time. I thought I had better get my act together this morning and stop by, check in and see what planning is going on.
We are all still coming, DH, Myself, DSis, DBil and DN and her DH. No grandchildren in tow this time. Not sure I will know what to do with myself to just do adult activities. I am sure willing to find out:thumbsup2
Is there anyone I should meet first? Are there any special gatherings we should consider?
I look forward to meeting you all on-line and chatting over the next few months.
Have a wonderful day

I took grandmother for her three week post-surgery appointment yesterday. He was very pleased with her progress and the look of the long incision. So we're very grateful for that! He wants to see her again in 3 more weeks.

Hope your DH manages to get fixed up with an opportunity soon and that your bathroom renovation goes as planned. We did ours two years ago and as DH wanted to do it himself it was taking him months, until I was so fed up I called in a plumber to put in all the fixtures, and he did it in about 2 days

I have never heard of a mouse taking up residence in a car before .... how very strange. You should get one of those humane traps and try and tempt him in with chocolate. Hope he doesn't jump on your lap while you're driving :scared1:
Last winter I lifted the bonnet of my car (which I don't use terribly often) and found a bunch of seed potatoes that we'd bought to plant in the spring along with a bunch of mouse poo - probably a nice warm place to sit and nosh after the car had been out a while;)
I know we had planned open seats on those buses for the EBPC cruise but not enough.;)
I will have less luggage this time then that trip. Only a checked bag and carry on and maybe a personal item- no wheelchair or crutches or boot.:cool1::thumbsup2:banana:
Wow Becky - you won't know yourself travelling so light! :rotfl:
We arrive at the Praktik Rambla in the evening of the 14th so it will be fun seeing everyone else arriving - lots of American accents and a few others odd ones.:
Odd accents? I think you might be talking about me

I have been known to get confused about the 2(TA and PC) cruises, but John is terrible. I have to straighten him out and then start all over again with what I have just told him!!! :headache::headache::headache: Seems even if I start off with the words Transatlantic and Panama Canal it doesn't make any difference whatsoever.
It doesn't help that we have this third cruise booked we are taking in 2 weeks either, but as we aren't doing anything special on that the plans are minor. We do however have the flights booked, so if I talk flights he is always thinking of the wrong vacation!!!

If your thick, I must be really dense. I knew this one but, I had to have a cheat sheet for all the short forms for awhile.

When you are doing trade show set up
Normally, I like to go with John on his trade show adventures. We just went to CES in Las Vegas in January.
However, this time the schedule is crazier than normal. His company has never exhibited at Mobile World Congress before. The cost to get in is $800 which I don't want to pay. Most other trade shows are not that expensive. I would like to see Duan, Duran and Steven Fry but am unwilling to pay the $10K it costs to have a Platinum Pass to the show.
We want to savor Barcelona together and there just isn't time to do it when he is working 24/7.

Fortunately John passed over the running of the business to our son last year. He is doing fantastic, and has taken the business forward. So John has just gone to help out. This would have been one boring trip for me though!! Audio visual things do nothing for me!!!(apart from being the means of paying John of course:rotfl2:)
I used to go on the smaller Christian Resource Exhibitions with him when the business was younger and did mostly Church Supplies, and I enjoyed those as there was plenty to look at.

1. DH is the VP of Strategic Marketing for SiliconBlue Technologies, a semiconductor company which manufactures low power FPGA's (Field Programmable Gate Arrays). They are the first new start up programmable semiconductor company in 20 years to achieve production volume companies. Their chips are designed for the high capacity, low power, constrained space design area, and price requirements for battery-operated products such as Smartphones, eBooks/ePaper, netbooks, mobile internet devices, portable media players, handheld POS terminals, medical instruments, digital still cameras and flash camcorders.
2. Basically it is a trade show for mobile device vendors and suppliers to that marketplace.
When and where will the 2010 Mobile World Congress be held?
The 2010 Mobile World Congress will be held 15-18 February at Fira de Barcelona, in Barcelona, Spain. The address is: Av. Reina Maria Cristina, s/n, 08004 Barcelona, Spain
What is the format of the event?
Mobile World Congress is once again comprised of several components:
A world-class thought leadership conference featuring visionary keynotes and action-provoking panel discussions
An exhibition with more than 1,300 companies displaying the cutting edge products and technology that will define the mobile future
An Awards ceremony and industry seminars that highlight the most innovative mobile solutions and initiatives from around the world
And most importantly, the planet’s best venue for mobile industry networking, finding business opportunities, and making deals
Events begin on Monday, 15 February and continue through Thursday, 18 February.
3. Award Ceremony:
This spectacular evening will be hosted by writer, actor and self-confessed technophile Stephen Fry and will feature a performance by Duran Duran, one of the world’s most successful rock bands. Duran Duran are currently finalising their 13th album for release in early 2010. Over the last thirty years the band have had 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK singles charts, 21 in the Billboard Hot 100 and sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Don’t miss this chance to see them perform live!

John does get bored without me - at any time we are apart I think!!!:lovestruc
Fortunately John passed over the running of the business to our son last year. He is doing fantastic, and has taken the business forward. So John has just gone to help out. This would have been one boring trip for me though!! Audio visual things do nothing for me!!!(apart from being the means of paying John of course:rotfl2:)
I used to go on the smaller Christian Resource Exhibitions with him when the business was younger and did mostly Church Supplies, and I enjoyed those as there was plenty to look at.
We do enjoy traveling together but not when he doesn't have a minute to spare. Since neither of us has been to Spain before, we really wanted to share the tourist experience. If I went along, I would be sightseeing alone.
I do keep DH pretty organized. We order room service for breakfast and a lunch to go while we are at a conference. One thing about booth duty is that often you barely have time to have a bathroom break much less a food break.
In Las Vegas, I had a blast at CES watching the 152" 3D tv presentation, all the 3D stuff and seeing all the latest and greatest of the new techie gadgets that are coming. However, I don't think a $21K 3D video camera can REALLY be considered a consumer item!!
We stayed this year at the MGM Grand and ate at some really wonderful restaurants this time.
First night was the Pearl, a combination of Canton and Shanghai cuisine. http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/pearl-chinese-restaurant.aspx
Second night was at Seablue (in celebration of being paid for by SiliconBlue) which is Michael Mina's Mediterrean seafood restaurant. http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/seablue-mediterranean-restaurant.aspx
Third night was at Shibuya, a Japanese restuarant named after an area in Japan. http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/shibuya-japanese-restaurant.aspx
Last night we ate L'Ateilier de Joel Robuchon http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/atelier-joel-robuchon-french-restaurant.aspx
We also saw The Beatles Love Circque du Solierl at the Mirage
http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/love/default.aspxat
and last but not least, the Porn Star Academy Awards at the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Casino Resort (part of the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo which is held every year during the same time as CES) which the men really enjoyed!! I didn't put a link in here as the site is pretty XXX rated!!
One of our friend's daughters wanted us to see Lady Gaga at the Polaroid booth but we couldn't get close enough to get a picture.
I also really enjoyed seeing Pauley Perrette (Abby Scuito on NCIS). In person, Pauley is just as cute and bubbly as on the show. You can see her in slide 41 in my DH presentation. http://www.siliconbluetech.com/media/shows/CESphotos2010Jan7.pdf
This is a yearly event for us and we are already signed up to go for 2011!!

I am sure you guys probably had great times together!!
DH will be working hard at this conference. On this trip, he won't be doing too much extravagant entertaining. If he does, I will be sure to pass along any recommendations.
His hotel is pretty basic, the HCC Open Hotel. http://hcc-hotel-barcelona.bookassist.com/

I quite agree. The most important thing about the hotel is that it is close to where the Congress is being held. Transportation to and from these events is a key component.

I also have a garmin for running and I love it! And 6 1/2 miles is a great walk/run BTW! We may be signing up for the Inaugural Wine and Dine Half-Marathon which just happens to be the same day we get back to Orlando. It's Disney's first night half-marathon. I'm hoping I can train while on the ship. We'll see.

Yes I think I will be doing the CC 5k. I've been to CC twice and have never done it. I've also never done a run on Deck 4 but I plan on doing it this time. I'm also trying to find some places in Barcelona where I can run/walk (mostly walk). :rotfl:

I have done this too. I can't wait to put faces to names while we are on the cruise. :rotfl2:
