Since you two are in my humble opinion cruising experts I'd like your input as to a fear I have. I am concerned that as the Western is so much closer to home it will not seem as tropical or as much as an "escape". What did you think and how would you compare/contrast (good and bad points) of The Western vs. The Eastern? Thanks Ann

Well I know your question isn't directed to me, but having done both cruises, it's my opinion that they both offer the same 'escapist' value. I felt just as far away from home in Cayman as I did in St. Thomas! Once I am aboard the ship and out to sea, I feel a million miles from home no matter where I am.
And if I had to choose one over the other, I like the western cruise better.

I haven't been on the DCL Western itinerary yet but I have cruised to Grand Cayman and Cozumel (and Ocho Rios) on the Carnival Destiny and they definitely had a tropical atmosphere.
But I'll leave the question to Barb and Tony. :)

Amzey -

I wish DCL went to Ocho Rios! I love that place. The kids would love Dunn's River Falls. Oh well!

(P.S. You can have Ty the carpenter if I can have Paige, the host!!! )

Having done both Eastern and Western, the Western is definitely my favorite! Grand Cayman was truly a paradise. We were told it is one of the wealthiest islands, and I can believe it...much less solicitation of tourists, and snorkeling with the stingrays there was the neatest experience. In Cozumel, we did the jeep tour, and visiting the ruin before heading to the beach made us feel like we were in another world. Xcaret is the same way...I really want to spend more time there. Of course, I always love to visit Mexico. When I was younger, I babysat for a Mexican family, and I gained a deep appreciation of Mexican people and culture.
St. Martin and St. Thomas were okay, but I felt like they were more "generic" islands. Next year we have one week of vacation left, and it is definitely going for the Western.
Of course, Key West does not feel like an exotic tropical port of call, but it is such a colorful place...I really want to spend more time there. It is so rich in history and character. And Castaway Cay ALWAYS feels like a tropical paradise. :D

Thanks, I now feel better- although my husband thinks I was silly as ANY cruise is better than December in Massachusetts!
