We just booked yesterday. Our first cruise ever:cool1:. Now we just have to book our airfare, but it's still way to expencive.
Our family consists of my husband Rasmus who will be 34 when we leave, our son Thomas who will be almost 4 and myself, Christina who will turn 31 on March 4th, and hopefully will celebrate this on the cruise (if things work out as hoped we will also celebrate in Magic Kingdom on March 4th.)
We live in Denmark, Europe.

Welcome Aboard!!
I think we are all going to have a good time. Our son Ethan will be 5 when we cruise and our daughter Lauren will be 3. The also both love to meet new friends. ARe you going to put your children in the Oceaneer's Club?
What type of stateroom did you get? We got a cat 11. This is our first time on a disney cruise and the first time with the kids on any cruise at all. Where are you guys from?
I agree with the fish extenders...since you have cruised before you can be in charge and tell us all what to do ha ha...maybe we can set up a facebook group so we can all get to know each other better also. What do you think?

Welcome disneytraceyl!
I think that a facebook group for the fish extender would be great and I think it would be a good idea if someone who has been on a cruise before would be in charge.
Disneytraceyl would you mind beeing in charge?
We are still deciding if we are going to put our son in the Oceaneer Club. He is very shy and doesn't speak english. But I'll think that we will give it a try, because I think that he will enjoy playing with other children.

DH and I have cruised on RCCL and Celebrity but not Disney until now. I had to look up the fish extender but will be sure to do it. I have a question already. I was told we needed to all have pirate outfits. This info came from a person who went on the Eastern Caribbean cruise. Does anyone know anything about if or why we would need the costumes? Well I am off to look at the fish extender pics now. Sign me up.

That sounds like it is going to be an amazing family-trip.
About the pirate outfits: Wednesday night is "pirate night". The dinner is going to have a pirate theme, and I believe there will be a pirate party on the deck afterwards. Costumes are completely optional, but we will definitely be dressing up: DS loves pirates (and all of us thinks it is fun to get dressed up).

Great to know about the pirate night. DH and I and the grandkids will definitely dress up for the pirate night and party!
I've been looking for bits and pieces of clothing to make up costumes. What fun! Surprising to see how many places sell pirate gear! :goodvibes I will be visiting the thrift shores as well.
I have another question. I see pics with tons of stuff on the cabin doors. Are the doors metal and these things are magnets? Otherwise, how are the signs, note boards etc. attached to the cabin door? Thanks for the help......of course you can't tell I have not cruised Disney before....ha.
nickcapp
08-09-2009, 04:33 PM
Bingo! Yes the door are metal. People get very creative with their doors.
One of the most common methods its buying ink-jet printable magnetic paper and printing whatever designs you wish. There are some great ideas and folks who will customize pictures to print on the main board. You can pick up the inkjet printable magnetic paper pretty much anywhere print supplies are sold. It can get expensive. Look at ebay for a deal!
We have a lot of fun doing it! (Even for us big kids!)

I just switched my cruise date over to this one this morning!
We were scheduled to go on the Feb 27th eastern, which I REALLY wanted, as we did the western this past January, but with my daughter's school schedule I can't make it work. She is attending a fine arts high school and her dance exams land Feb 27-March 4th...and her spring break is March 6-13. So we are doing the western again this year! It rained in Cozumel when we were there last time, so its our 'second chance' there this time.

Anyone have any info about the size or type of luggage that is best to be able to store under the bed in the cabin? From my reading it says the bed only has 8 or 9 (opinions vary) inches of clearance. I can't find a regular soft side suitcase that will get that flat in order to store it under the bed. Should I look for a large wheeled duffel? Any help you could give would be appreciated. We have 4 traveling in my cabin and being able to have underbed storage for the suitcases would be really good.
GoHerd1028
09-02-2009, 06:26 PM
That is a very good question. I have been pondering that myself what to do. I think I am going to go to Target and pick up a few of the Eddie Bauer large Rolling Duffles so that we can get them under the bed easily. Curious as to what others are thinking of doing though
Lollipop's Mom

We had no trouble fitting our regular soft sided luggage under the bed. Also, we stood one up in the closet and tossed laundry in it, then just wheeled it to the laudry room on laundry day and worked well!

Hello again all!
I just wanted to let you all know that they released some CAT 12's this morning for this cruise.
Anyone trying to save a few dollars or a party of 4 booked in an 11 may want to check it out!
6 months to go!
Lollipop's Mom
09-03-2009, 03:06 PM
I just came here to post about the cat 12 as well! Its tempting, but I love the room location we have for our cat 11 and also I would lose our 10% on board booking discount. I am basically paying $810 instead of $899, so the $70 savings (well $140) isn't worth it to me to give up our room location!
GoHerd1028

This is our first Disney Cruise so I dont know all the ins and outs yet. Now, is it true that cat 12 only sleeps 3 people and that if a family of 4 books a cat 12 they automaticly get upgraded to a cat 11? We are in a cat 11 now on deck 6 i think. I sent an e-mail to our travel agent but have not heard anything back yet. Just trying to learn more aobut this.

So who is hyped about 2011?? Decisions decisions.... I live 20 mins from Vancouver and can't believe the ship will be so close, but at the same time I have never had a strong desire to do an Alaskan cruise. I am thinking Europe summer 2011....maybe....?? lol.

I used to think that an Alaskan Cruise was for old people lol however, I find myself wanting to go on one! does this mean I am now old?:confused3

Yes that makes you very old!!! lol
I am just not 100% sure I am into doing Alaska - I want my vacation to be on a beach with a fru fru drink and a lounge chair - not panning for gold! lol
I see mountains every day, and have seen tons of wildlife in my lifetime - I probably wouldn't even want to get off the ship in Alaska much - its just not for me.
That being said - its extremely tempting when the ship is 30 mins from my house to go on it for a week and just relax on the boat and do a few things off of it.

Myself, my wife and 3 boys (12/8/6) will be on this cruise for our kids' Spring Break. This is the first cruise for the kids, 5th for us, 1st DCL cruise. We have not been on a large ship in 19 years (actually the Big Red Boat) so it will be a new experience for all of us.
We will actually fly down to Orlando on Thursday night and spend Friday at the Magic Kingdom, to get everyone in the mood for the cruise.

Check your ressies...
I had room 5133 booked and logged on today to see I was now in 6504!
I wasn't too happy and called DCL and was put on hold for a while, finally transferred to a manager who claims that room will be 'out of order' during the cruise.
Now I notice cat 11 is all gty....
I was hoping for an upgrade, but 5139 was available...grrrrrrr...lol.
I loved before how we were just off the elevators - we had 5131 last time and LOVED the location.
I don't take well to someone changing my 'vacation vision'. lol (kidding).

I think they are bs'ing me and someone wanted that room because they needed adjoining or they wanted it across from a balcony.
I did just write to DCL and ask about possible noise/construction fumes smell if they are doing any renovating on that deck.
I like to take an afternoon nap on a cruise sometimes, and don't want to listen to them replacing carpet, and don't want to smell paint/varnish. I get migraines with smells like that very easily.
I plan on knocking on that door while on the cruise to see if someone answers! lol.
If they do I won't be shocked!
Im sad that we lost our room :(
I know its a silly and stupid thing to be worried about, but we loved that room location!

My mom is a seamstress and made my fish extender last year for us..... I told her we wanted a pink one (if you know Meg and I, we have everything PINK) and for some odd reason she made it blue and yellow and we totally hate it... lol. I still have no clue why she did it in those colors, as she went shopping for the fabric and stuff, its not like it was stuff she had laying around and wanted to use up... lol.
Of course we didn't tell her - we just use it anyway, as its only a fish extender and nothing overly important as to how it looks......
Anyway I can't wait for March - its so rainy and cold here and I am dying to get in the Florida sunshine!
Meg has no idea, but we are doing 4 nights in DisneyLAND on the way home - I won a 3 night stay from hojoanaheim in a contest last spring, so am going to just fly into orange county on the way home and surprise Meg!
I plan on telling her our flight connects via orange county - we always have a connection, so she won't even clue in until we get off the plane!!! :)

Is anyone staying at the airport (Hyatt or ???) the night before the cruise and want to split the cost of a limo to port?

Key West is VERY easy to do on your own - I wouldn't pay DCL for that tour at all. You get off the ship, walk down the dock, turn left and you are right into 'town'. You just walk around a corner and it takes you right to all the main attractions. Its an easy 5-8 min walk depending on how fast you walk. You can usually find coupons online for the aquarium and stuff.
I would do it on your own.
Last January in Key West we just got off the ship, wandered the shops and ended up taking the trolley tour. It went all over and you could hop on/off whereever you wanted. The whole thing end to end was about 2.5 hours. I wouldn't do it again, but it was fun once. Lots of history type talk and stuff and the kids on the tour were bored out of their minds.
I think we have decided not to even get off the ship in Key West this time and enjoy an empty ship/pools. It was one of those 'been there, done that' kinda places to us.
Cozumel - it was raining the day we went and quite chilly - so we wandered the mall off the pier and then decided to go out to Paradise beach anyway because it was brightening up. We were the ONLY people there and it felt awkward. lol. We had some lunch and headed back to the ship. The water was frigid and way too cold to swim in :(
I know you can book snuba tours and stuff on your own easily too. It may be a lot cheaper.
This trip we plan to go to Nachi Cocum for the day. Hoping for good weather so we can enjoy it this time!
Grand Caymen was our fave day - the water was really warm. We took a cab up to the public beach for the day. Good (but expensive) food there and we rented chairs. This time we plan on going to Rum Point as it looks like a much nicer area/beach. I am usually a big advocate for doing ports on your own, but may pay DCL to take us to this one, as it is further out and further away than the public beach. I have to check into options for transportation there on our own.

Good tips Liz! I figured we would do Key West on our own but was not sure about that other stuff. We woudl like to do the beach stuff, but I am afraid to get a taxi. I guess it is my fear of getting left at the beach with no way to get back to the ship.

your lucky the water was warmer in Grand Caymen. I went last year February 21st-March 7th, 2009 on b2b and water was chilly when I went. Great weather and no rain for two weeks. Just chilly water:rotfl2:. Bt this year my birthday will be during the trip so I won't care about chilly water:thumbsup2

so, are the beaches going to be too cold for swimming in March? I guess I just figured it was warm all year around and it would not be an issue. The pools on board are warm right?? Would we be better off to just get off the ship with the kids and shop in the ports instead of doing the beach trips?

You won't have any trouble getting a cab - they are lined up all along the beach areas ready to take you back. We had our choice of 7 or 8 when we were ready!

In January Cozumel was way too cold, and unfortunately Castaway Cay was really cold as well. Grand Cayman was nice. We were on seven mile beach at Grand Cayman.
We plan to do Nachi Cocum in Cozumel because it also has a heated pool, so if the ocean is too chilly, we can still swim.
If anyone else decided to do Nachi, maybe we can share a cab??
I would say try the beach - the kids don't feel the cold like we do anyway - and if you are going to the Caribbean you MUST do the beach right? :)
Maybe just take a cab to the public beach in GC. There is a playground there, a little restaurant, and you can rent chairs and stuff too. I would guess the water should be nice there, and if not, you can hang out for a bit and grab a cab back to the pier area and go shopping or whatever.

I knew I lost an email somewhere... please email me again with the info. Iam sooooo sorry - I am usually way more organized.
Also - Julia- you don't have to bring tons of stuff to join in. We travel from BC and travel lightly, and last year my FE stuff took up no room at all. I had magnets made with Disney Magic 2009 on them. The package was about the size of a book. There are tons of things you could do that take up no room at all!

As for FE gifts...as Julia said - its up to you what you want to do. On our last cruise there was a lady and her husband who used the FE as their personal exercise for the day to wipe out calories they ate - they did a small gift every single day and clocked it at a one mile walk to do all FE's at one time. LOL.
They used it to make themselves walk that mile every day!
We did just one gift (they cost quite a bit to have made, and also one trip around was enough for me! lol).

I booked Nachi Cocum for March 9th!
We really want to go there, and while it might not sell out, I decided to book it now anyway. With it being Canada's spring break, I didn't want to chance it was booked up on us!
I like that it has a nice big pool there so if the ocean is too chilly, we can still swim!

Looks like something I would enjoy if I wasn't with an infant this trip!
We will be chillin' on the empty boat for all the ports.
I'm actally looking very much foward to that!

Something I plan to bring this time that I didn't last time, is a couple of travel mugs. The cups they give you at the soda station hold about 3/4 of a cup of drink and are useless!!!
I also might bring a water bottle and fill it up with juice at breakfast to put in the room - I don't want to drink soda all day and some juice would be nice.

Yah thats fine....but then I can carry my mug around after it is full :)
Also - we didn't know until the 3rd morning about the parrot cay buffet breakfast - it is waaaay better than the buffet up on the lido deck. Skip the buffet and go to parrot cay if you want a decent buffet! Its also way more relaxed and quiet in there!
I have to say DCL food wasn't the best compared to other cruises I have been on, but everything else is far superior!

Herd...
Parrot cay has more of a sit down feel and is usually far less crowded. Much easier to find a table.
The food is pretty much the same. They serve your drinks there.
It is worth it if you want to take your time.
We often do both.
Lollipop's Mom
10-27-2009, 12:21 PM
I found the food better at Parrot Cay. There is an omelet station too.
Disney needs to do a better breakfast though. Its not that great. The pancakes are disgusting!
We cruised NCL last May and their breakfast waaaaaaaay outdid DCL.
This time I want to try a sit down/be served breakfast - we never did get to that last time. We slept too late most mornings. lol.

We are planning an excursion in Cozumel independently. Do any of you experienced Disney cruisers know whether we will be tendered or docked in Cozumel?
Also. Cozumel is Central time. My Disney schedule shows we arrive at 9:30am. Do they mean Eastern time (where we started from) or does the "ship" time (including the docking time) change with the time zone we are in?
I also thought at one time I found a site on the internet that listed the number of ships that were in certain ports on certain dates. Anyone know about this?
Thanks.

We docked and its a big long dock. You can hire a guy with a bike and 2 seat thing behind him to take you up and down the dock if you want. We used this on the way back up to the ship because we were tired and it was really fun. I am thinking of holding off on booking the Dream for a while. I don't think prices are going to skyrocket - they have a LOT of rooms to fill on 3 and 4 day cruises. I also don't even know if I want to spend all that money for 4 days. I may wait it out until 2012 for the 7 day.
Meg and I really want to go to NYC and play tourist, so I am thinking of a disney break in 2011 (gasp!) and then cruise again in 2012. I plan on still making a dummy booking though on board to get my discount :)
As for FE - I don't want to cut it off too soon. Last time I believe we cut it off about 3 weeks before sailing. I don't think anyone joined much after 4 weeks before anyway, so probably by early Feb we will have a good idea as to how many there are.
SOmeone emailed me and asked me to list names/ages (kids ages) so they can make things more personalized. I will work on that, but October has been a CRAPPY month for me personally and I am hoping to get to that soon for you guys!

We just got off the 3-night cruise to the Bahamas and I think we now have her hooked on Disney Cruise Line!! We were lucky enough to get one of the pin codes for kids 17 and under sailing for free, so...we decided her "big trip" of the year would be to go on a 7 night cruise (ok, in reality that was the excuse so we could sail again!) Can't wait!!!!
I was wondering - how can we get on the FE exchange? We will be in stateroom 2000. It's hubby and I and the 2 girls. Would love to be included. Thanks!!

I just booked this cruise for seven of us. I think that all of us will be able to go but I will not put up any details until I know for sure.
Booked three Cat. 12 rooms. It seems there are several available. We have three people in one room. You could actually get a Cat. 12 with four people in it for $739 for the first two and $699 for the others. I am sure if you do that you get bumped up to a Cat. 11.
How many people on this cruise date are in a Cat. 12 ? When we went in may there were about 30 people booked in the Cat. 12s. Since there are actually about 13 Cat. 12 rooms everyone else got upgraded. We had two rooms and went to a Cat. 9.

how did you get 18 hours of childcare? Did you have to pay extra for that? How old is the child you are booking time for? Our daughter will be 3 when we sail and our son will be 5.

I thought I read somewhere that you get 18 hours to pre-book before you get on the boat. Maybe I am wrong on the amount?
For kids under 3, you can put them in flounders for a $6 per hour fee and for kids over 3, they have kids clubs that are no additional charge.

so the 18 hours is free if you pre book? Let me know if you have any luck and if it is actually true!

Both your kids are old enough to be in the oceaneer club which is free.

I was worried about Lauren not being "totally" potty trained. She still needs some help at times getting dressed again. Maybe by March all will be good.

Just thought I'd share a little thing I am doing to get a little extra money to put towards all our on board charges.
When we return bottles and cans at the grocery store we get llittle slips from the machine or the counter. I am saving them-they don't expire. I was initially just saving them and was going to cash them in and just set that money aside until I made a nice little discovery.
Our local Wegmans (grocery store) sells Disney gift cards on one of those gift card displays. (I've seen these displays at many stores in the past) So everytime I get $25 in return slips I am going to take them in and buy gift cards-this way I KNOW that money is going towards the trip. I was so happy to see these there.
So that is another option to keep your eyes open for if you are trying to set aside a little extra money for March. Every little bit helps! Hope this helps someone else out too!:thumbsup2

I think you have a decent upgrade shot from a cat 12 on this cruise. They have been selling those $739 cat 12s for a long time now. I notice main seating is STILL available on this cruise, which is another sign it is not full at all. I am surprised, as this is spring break for us, but maybe we are just a lot earlier than others?
Most cruises have main seating long gone even 6-8 months out. Last year I booked my January 2009 cruise about 7 months out and main seating was gone and we were waitlisted!

In my area-Western NY, the kids generally have the week off during presidents birthdays (Feb.) and this year their "spring break" falls in April-which I think it usually does.
My kids will be missing a week of school, but they are 4 and 6 so I am not that concerned. :)
Now that I've said that, I know nothing about upgrades....we've always booked what we planned on staying in.

Yeah we got one of the $739 rooms and could actually have gotten one with four people which is unusual. We were not able to get main seating, but have been waitlisted. How can you tell if it is still available?

Hey everyone....I think I have to cancel :(
I am taking today to think about it and talk about it with Meg, but I am really stretched financially right now - I work on commission and my industry is in the toilet right now, I have a 2nd at-home job that last year made me 12 grand in 4 months, but this year I have not even made a 1/4 of that due to the economy - I had a huge car repair - and I don't want to go into debt over a cruise (trying to be responsible here... lol). I am literally losing sleep over it - which is just plain stupid.
Anyone want to take over the FE if we do bail out? I can pass along all the info to you.
Also - I will have a LOT of southwest credit if anyone hasn't booked yet.. :)

One thing that I did to make the trip easier to pay for was book Cat. 12 rooms and to also use the Disney Visa card. I got $175 onboard credit for using the Disney Visa card and going thru Dreams Unlimited. Also with the Disney Visa card you get six months no interest. I will have it payed off at the end of the six months so I do not have to pay the interest, and paying a little at a time makes it easier.

Yah thats a good deal - problem is I am Canadian and can't get that card. I have decided I am comfortable spending $2000 TOTAL on this years vacation, so the cruise is not in the budget. I am going to cancel, sell my southwest credit and we are going to go to disneyland for a few days. I can probably do that for less than 2, and have money left over.

However my kids are not real keen on going to swim with the stingrays again. We would just like to snorkel at the Reef and then go to Rum Point. The boat ride was actually pretty fun.
I have contacted the folks at Native Way and they said they do not have a tour just like that but..... if we could get 16 people who wanted to go to the Reef and Rum Point that they would do that. We have 7 people in our group and would only need 9 more people to have a special tour.

Hopefully it means that we ALL get upgrades. I have been watching the prices for some time and I think that they will not go much lower on the Cat. 12 even after the 75 day mark. They are at $739 per person now. About the lowest I have seen has been $689 so not much difference.

Count me in!!!:banana::banana::banana::banana:
I just booked this cruise tonight... wahoo!! This will be our 3rd DCL cruise. We just got off the Magic in November, did an Eastern to St. Croix. On that cruise we brought our 2 kids, and both sets of grandparents! THIS time it will just be DH and I. We were looking for a trip to celebrate his 40th birthday. We looked at some cruises out of California (where we live), but we have already done the Mexican Riviera a couple years ago on another line (and will do again in 2011 with the kids, when the Wonder comes to LA!). For about the same price as another line we could book the cat 12 room and get to be back on the MAGIC that we love!! For the $739 price it was a done deal. Plus, we get to do a Western which we haven't done before, so yay!!!
I am so excited to have another chance to get back on the Magic. I could never have imagined it would be this soon, otherwise I would have rebooked it onboard.
I've never cruised in an inside room before though... we had a SPH on our first cruise, and upgraded from a SPH to a cat 5 at the port last month. :woohoo:This time around though, no money for an upgrade!! haha. Since it is just the two of us I think we will be fine. I admit I am surprised that there are still cat 12's available, and every category available for this cruise.

We did our first Western Cruise back in May and loved it. Hopefully with all of the Cat. 12 rooms still selling that we may get an upgrade. That is the way it was back in May. They sold a lot more Cat. 12 reservations than there were actual Cat. 12 rooms so a lot of people got upgraded. We went from a 12 to 9.
I am looking for a few more people to go on the Native Way Tour in Grand Cayman, snorkeling on the Reef and then lunch at Rum Point. $57 thru Native Way Water Sports.

New to DisBoards! :yay: And have enjoyed seeing who is going on this trip!
We're sort-of first time cruisers. Our one and only cruise was the Disney cruise on the "Big Red Boat" back in 1991--pre kids! Me, my DH (David) and DS (adam, 12) and DD (Abby, 9) will be cruising. We are so excited. Booked this a year ago and can't believe it is approaching.
We're big Disney fans (been to WDW 9 times in the last 9 years!).:woohoo:

The first place to start is in the FAQs at the top of the main cruise discussion board. Here is the link
FAQs for Disney Cruise forums (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2068966)
Just search for "fish" on that page. There is a "Fish Extender 101" thread with pictures.

So I think Grand Cayman for us will be just exploring town, and maybe a cab to a beach. We love to snorkel though. This is the hazard of booking a cruise like this so late... Less time to save for extras. :sad2:

But very windy, and by the time our reception in Palo was over and we got changed and to the beach, it was nearly 2. We went to Serenity Bay for the first time, since Grandpa took our kids to the Family Beach. But the wind was sooo cold! We tried to enjoy it, but gave up after a little bit. So I am definitely hoping for warmer weather this time!
