Attaboy Steve...Good thread name choice!

I did 3000 yards today in about an hour in the pool.

While the Vernal Equinox has come and gone, Spring hasn't sprung (at least in the Midwest).

Lets have a fantastic April - Dec, team...for what its worth, a (formerly) fat man in Chicago is proud of this team...we came VERY close to our total hours for February, but blew away the miles totals.

Nice job goofs...stay consistent...you are doing this for YOU not for your team...but your TEAM is pulling for you.

Mike.

Well hallelujah Mike is here to cover my back!! We had conficker issues on Tuesday afternoon, beefing up security, major freak out, etcetera. They closed us all off from everything before noon. Yesterday, I spent doing my taxes...:crazy2: Then DH had issues about traveling this year...:sad2: It has been a great 2 days to say the least.

Thank goodness I run!!! I got in all my miles over my downtime even through the cold icy winds and rain! I am still working out a plan for the LR this weekend and stressing over that.

MARCH MILES: 1770.52 (1178.27)
MARCH HOURS: 296:31:05 (247:02:53)

YTD TOTALS: 2908.15/491:22:14

Wow! That's a lot of miles everyone! Nice work team!!!!!!!!!

good morning Goofs!

Lisa: sorry to hear about your travails, but GREAT job staying focused on your workouts!

One side note, the "time" values on the monthly page of the spreadsheet is in hours, not minutes.

Going for my first walk/run after surgery...I'll let the goofs know how it goes!

Thursday is here. Waiting til pm to do my swim, since yesterday I weas there at 5:35 a.m. and the pool was already full! Did weights instead.

Had my talk with my boss yesterday. Shorthand version--good performance, you come off as rude because you think you have the answer and you say whats on your mind, you're too smart, yada yada yada. Sigh! So I have to be me, but not me. I'm too old for this. At least I held it together while we were talking.

Anyway, time to work.

Sounds like we have the same boss....Its a lousy work situation. I'm in a shootout right now with my boss and his boss, trying to convince them that the road they are on will not only not make money, but will lose us literally millions of dollars in actual money, as well as productivity...but they know better. :confused3

oh well...at least I'm on record as saying that their solution won't work...

Well, my first run suxored. I got in about 2 miles in 30 minutes, and my knee wouldn't handle more than about .10 miles at a time, so I would jog VERY slowly until it hurt, then walk till it didn't. I wonder if I'm unconsciously compensating for the injury and my gait is off.

beats me. Time for knee ice and coffee!

Morning Team! WTG on the totals!!

Maura - I had one of those bosses years ago. Told me I wasn't "friendly" enough. Never mind I had the highest productivity of all the other team leads. Nope, need to pal around with them more, go drinking. Oh and I was an outsider...one of them city folk... This was in FAR western Maryland and I'm from Chicago. No, I don't hunt deer from the side of the road and I have never heard of squirrel pot pie (not kidding) so yeah, guess I am 'city folk'.

Mike - Patrick favored the knee first couple times he went out after surgery. Would complain of pain in the other leg muscles because he was putting more stress on the good one. Give it time.

Lisa - sorry to hear about the travel conversations. Just tell him it's to make you healthier.

We leave for NY tomorrow on a 6.15a flight so not I'll get in my work out tonight. Would like to but still haven't packed - at all. Might go home, get stuff done then see if have time before needing to get to bed.

Have a great day!

Maura, sorry to hear that you're "too smart" for your job. When I was younger, I thought you could never be too smart (like too thin or too rich), but it seems that's not the case in the real world.

Liz, your story sounds a bit like mine. I grew up in Central New Jersey and am now in the deep South. Thankfully none of my coworkers ever ate squirrel -- at least, not to my knowledge!

Lisa. I'm glad your runs gave you some stress relief. Good luck in your negotiations with your DH. Travel is expensive, but the mental health benefits (and physical health benefits is you're traveling for races!) are priceless IMO. Can you cut something else out of your budget as a way to compromise? After our cruise last month, we decided to eat out less often and start putting that money toward our travel budget instead.

Mike, hang in there with your knee. I hope to see reports of pain-free runs in the near future!

As for me, I did a little "speed" work yesterday and averaged under 10:25 pace. That's actually pretty good for me, so I was pleased. The bad news is that when I stopped to have some water after 1.25 miles, I realized I was on the verge of an asthma attack :scared:. I've only had one prior attack (in 1994), but DH has had exercise- and allergy-induced asthma since childhood, so I recognized the symptoms and decided to call off the rest of the workout. (Sorry for the low mileage day.) It took about 45 minutes before my lungs and trachea no longer felt like they were on fire. I've had a long talk with my body and hope it's on board with my plan that we are to try and go another 15 years before the next flare up!

Hello Goofs! I'm glad this title was picked. It was my fave.

I hope everyone it feeling okay.

Maura, good luck with the work situation. I've been told that I'm the "nice" team leader at work. I guess the new people just don't really know me yet. Or maybe I'm just sarcastic and mean behind closed doors, as it should be.

I plan on getting out of here early enough to get a run outside. I really want to be a morning trainer. That requires me and DBF getting to bed earlier. The last time that I was really a morning exerciser was when I was a swimmer in college.

I did manage to convince my BFF that she will be running the Princess half with me next year. I told her that I was registering her in May so she needed to train. I think we'll have so much fun together.

I'll try to check in later when I complete my run.

Argh! I take it all back, Liz. I just learned that one of my colleagues thinks squirrel "isn't too bad," but she drew the line at eating snake when one was caught and killed at a family reunion! :scared1:

Okay we don't even have those conversations in Maine....:lmao:

When I lived in GA, I did try alligator and some kind of snake but I did not like either. Never eaten a squirril, road killed a ton but never ate one. The dogs seem to enjoy them though...:confused3

Yesterday I got in 3 miles and was due for hill repeats but when I got home, DS7 wanted to go for a bike ride. I would like to give those miles to Shan. So, Shan, you have 3.44 miles in 34:04 yesterday and, for the record, you had a great time!! :goodvibes Needless to say I skipped the hill repeats after the bike.

All packed and ready to go to Mass tonight. DH wants to stay home and make money being all stressed out over the economy. I want some time out of Dodge. I am looking forward to the CMM trip just for that reason alone...and that I can be done with marathon training. I am going to have to have a supreme exprience in Nashville to justify this much time again. Maybe if I had nothing else to do in my life, it would be more fun but right now I am stressing just getting the steps in so I don't hurt too bad afterward. :rolleyes1 Yeah, who am I kidding...the 6:30 a.m. flight the next morning is going to entail supurlatives on my part. :sad2: But at least I have Patrick to keep me entertained during the race. :upsidedow

Have a great day Goofs and keep those miles rolling in!!!!!!!!!!

Lisa Please don't stress--it ruins all the benefit of why we run in the first place! I do understand your comments about the time commitment, though. It is one of the reasons I haven't signed up for the marathon (yet).

Got in my swim yesterday and bike this morning. Now just waiting for the Dell guy to show up and fix my PC-finally. Our internal computer resources are mostly external, so between trying to explain a problem to someone half a world away (India, New Zealand), having them totally misinterpret and route to the wrong place, finally tell them "It's not slow--it's dead!" and talk to a couple more people, I have a repair person coming "sometime between 9:30-5:30" to swap out a boatload of parts.

Oatmeal is eaten...back to work.

Mike, sorry about your walk/run. Hope the next one goes easier on your knee.

We're off to Hilton Head this weekend for spring break so you might not hear from me for a week. A little bit of family drama going down with some that are going with us, so I'm hoping everything will be OK. And to think I was just worried about the weather! :sad2: Regardless, we're going and we might just end up with a bigger unit than we really need. It will hurt to lose those DVC points, though! :headache:

I plan on running on vacation. I'm a little scared. I ran around my daughter's gym this week just to get a feel and it seemed to go OK. I think I'm just gonna try to do a few two mile runs... I've gotten the bug since DH's marathon. I had all my programs pulled out yesterday trying to dream about some races I want to do. I would really like to do the Virginia Half and the WDW Full. Now, if I can talk DH into these that is another story. I really feel like I need a goal. I know I have the Peachtree planned, but it is just not the same??? :confused3

Hope everyone has a nice weekend! :grouphug:

Happy Friday, Goofs! Not much to report here. I did a half hour on the Wii Fit yesterday, which doesn't sound too strenuous, but those push-up/side-plank combos are TOUGH! I had a good hip stretch with the Wii Fit yoga as well and think I'll be up for another attempt at a run tonight during DS's pre-game baseball practice at the "good" ball field.

April is starting out pretty well......I am at least getting used to getting up in the morning! It's not so hard every day.......but I did skip the early work-out this morning. I was dead tired yesterday with the 5:00am run on the TM and then 60 min pump class in the evening. And on top of that, my work days are long and busy. I am burning the candle at both ends right now. So this morning I stayed in bed (resting and awake!)

April started with an April Fool's joke on my run. I was running a bit late, and my run was going to end just before the Y closed. I was doing my last mile (which typically starts slightly slower than my 10k pace, but gets progressively faster), and with less than a quarter of a mile to go, the treadmill flashes a "System Re-Initialization" and comes to a dead stop. It doesn't slow down, it stops. After bouncing off the panel, I go a quick restart and burn through that final quarter even faster than normal.

Got in my runs for yesterday and today as well - I lost a lot of fitness in a week and a half or so, because what had been a cruising pace still feels uncomfortably fast, but my foot doesn't hurt anymore. I have to keep reminding myself not to push hard for the next week and try to regain it, since I have a marathon on the 11th.

On a final note, I've got a couple of weeks before deciding if I am going to do my first "real" ultra. I've done a couple of "baby" ultras (50ks), but this is a timed, 8-hour event, where you run the same loop course again and again and again and again and again and again (etc). It's not too pricey, it's something I want to do, and it wouldn't (probably) do any harm to my other races. And, as an additional plus - I could double the mileage.

I wish I could take credit for the name but I believe it was Patrick's suggestion. Well, I could use his idea and claim ownership of it and get praise from the big-wigs but then we'd be talking about a boss I once had!

This has been a pretty brutal week for me. In addition to WDW trip & Easter planning and a sick wife & daughter, work has been overwhelming and I've been working a lot of late hours from home. The only exercise I've done in the last few days was a little over a 2 mile run last night. I just sank from exhaustion and couldn't do any more.

I'm finishing up everything tonight and should be able to start fresh next week. I really need to catch up on sleep as I've only been getting around 5 hours per night which isn't nearly enough for my normal activity level.

The stress has also been contributing to my eating habits and I'm starting to go in the opposite direction of the great progress I've made the last several weeks. Why doesn't celery work as comfort food?

Time to get back on track tonight! I'm pretty zapped today so I think I will do the exercise bike for an hour tonight while catching a show and then call it an early night.

I did register for the Big Sur Half Marathon in Monterey, CA coming in November. It will be my fourth Half this year and looks to be one of the more beautiful and scenic courses I've run. I've heard great things about it and am really excited.

Our March numbers are a little higher now that I updated my last two days.

Finally, no strange food for me (I'm a Californian!) The only unusual things I try are on cruise ships and at Food & Wine at Epcot!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Warmer than I like - it's nearly 50, and sunny. Sounds ideal, but I am a cold-weather runner, so my ideal conditions about about 40 degrees, and cloudy. I managed a 9.5 mile run, in just under 70 minutes. Tried to keep it fairly easy, since the Illinois marathon is only a week away.

Hi Goofs!

the boards have been so slow that its driving me crazy!!! It takes too long to post.

I ran 12 miles yesterday. My partner and I found the perfect hilly route to train on for the Country Music Marathon - the hills are nice and rolling like CMM.

Lisa - check the website, they have changed the shirts for the race and you may need a different size shirt. taxes and stress about travels! yuck.

Mike - how is the knee nowadays?

As for me, I have had alligator, snake, snails, and even squirrel and rabbit. It all tastes like chicken. Except the rabbit was pretty greasy so it was more like duck than chicken.

Mike - how is the knee nowadays? Just did 90 minutes on it run walking in side, probably got a total of 5 miles, which I am donating to SHAN, so go input the time on the spreadsheet Shan. Time for iced knee and coffee!

As for me, I have had alligator, snake, snails, and even squirrel and rabbit. It all tastes like chicken. Except the rabbit was pretty greasy so it was more like duck than chicken. Yep, had them all. The snails just tasted like garlic, but were squishy; also goose, deer, quail, pheasant, boar, dove, bear, moose, beaver (Now THAT was a little odd, but if you put the fat from the tail across the meat while its cooking...yummy!), duck, wild turkey. I drew the line at coyote and dog. Coyote because they are mangy nasty animals, and dog, well....I just couldn't bring myself to eat my best friend.

Sunday greetings, all! We had a power loss here today, which seems strange since there is no weird weather going on....yet! We are supposed to get snow tonight/tomorrow!

Today I volunteered at the Martian Marathon, although not exactly where I was expecting. Did get to see WISH'ers Carrie (wtpclc) and DH along with Margie (funwalker) before the race at the expo.

Gotta go grocery shopping and have a swim on tap.

Well, I finally got a much needed 12 hours of sleep Friday night. I unfortunately woke up with a rather painful condition that is going to make running nearly impossible for the next several days.

I did some yoga last night along with 14 sloooooow miles on the exercise bike. At least I felt like I got something done. We are about to leave to do a 2-mile walk on the trail near our house while pushing DD in the jogger. I should be fine if I take it easy.

I had to miss a run yesterday. It was odd in that it wasn't a distance race but rather a 1 hour run held by the running club each year. It's pretty simple in that it is how many miles you can do around the track in an hour.

It sounded pretty boring and I didn't really want to do it anyway but it counts in the club's ranking. I'm currently first in my age group simply because I've run the most races this year. In all of my first place finishes, I've been the only one in my AG! There are two other guys who, if they show up to enough races, will leap right ahead in the standings as they dominated me the one time I've raced each.

Oh yeah, and my arch-nemesis was there. I read online he ran 4 miles in that hour (he ran with his two young kids) so I could have beat him. Yeah, it wouldn't have felt as good since he wasn't going full speed. Oh, well. We shall meet again soon, and I will defeat him...if it's THE LAST THING I DO! Bwahaaaaahaaaa!

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

The mixer starts here... (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=31190831&postcount=638)

Variety is the spice of life, so they say. (But don't ask me who they are, although I suspect they work for McCormick. :confused3) With that in mind, this week's mixer question is:

What types of XT do you like to do, and why? What are your old favorites and new discoveries? What kind of XT would you like to try?

Anecdotes and pictures are welcomed. I think we'd really like to hear about the benefits of your XT--physical, mental, social. Does it create a stronger core or more flexibility? Does it help you de-stress? Is it something you enjoy with your kids, partner, friends? It might also be helpful to know how you work XT within your walking/running schedule.

Extra points for XT activities that are unusual or have funny names or rituals. As determined by popular vote. And in case you're wondering, those points have no monetary value whatsoever. (I'll make up other disclaimers as I think of them.)

Mike We have several inches of very wet, slushy snow as well. I can't find my snow brush, so brush it off with my hand, it is!

Did my swim this am. As usual, lost track of laps and time. I think around 1100. I won't mention the time because it will cause hysterical fits of laughter and we don't want the Goofs to get any Goofier!

So now have to call the insurance/hospital again about my PT claim as well as call the appliance repair people--once I find one--about my oven. Turns out our power outage fried the control board to the tune of $300+ just for the part!

Kinda quiet here. Sorry about all the snow for the northerners. Did someone forget to look at the calendar? Its April!! We have a cold front coming in today, dropping our temps about 20 degrees for the next couple of days but no snow so I'm not complaining!

I've had quite a bit of game/exotic meats but just could not get around the squirrel pot pie thing.

I think this weather is making April fools of us all! It's 43 degrees right now, but the wind chill makes it feel like 36 -- pretty cold temps for watching DS's baseball game!

I logged a good 2.06 miles on Friday in 20 minutes. (Kick butt pace for me!) Tonight, I ran on the same half-mile track but with the wind working against me. I went 1.89 miles in the exact same 20-minute period. Oh well. Here's hoping for some better weather for all of us!

Mike Only you could "feel sorry for yourself" and still blow the rest of us out of the water! Now tell that other knee to behave.

I did a bike workout today--gym based. A few hill intervals. I remember last year when I tried to do these--it wasn't pretty! Today, I just tried harder not to kill myself with a stupid bike setting and it seemed to work. Was hard, but didn't fall off the bike gasping!

Our work area, a bunch of different work groups located in the same space, are going out for Polish food today...Yum!

hey all, sorry I havent been posting much (but I am getting my miles in)...things have just been crazy lately (DD has softball 6 days a week, my DS is a firefighter and has had a ton of calls lately, both Dsis's are going thru drama and feel the need to drag me into it, my dad is having surgery, still trying to find a job, plus just got done tapping and boiling, which takes forever but is so worth it, the list goes on and on!

Thanks to Maura and Suzanne for the shout-out on the race thread, it feels good to know you have people cheering for you! I need to be better about that, I read them, but dont always have time to post, shame on me!

Suzanne, how was your race, I'm waiting for the pics, you always have great ones!

Mine was ok, I cramped really bad at the start, I think it's 'cause I didn't eat well the night before? My time was 47:36 (5 minutes faster than the last time I ran this one) The week before I had a 5K and that was 49:22 (7 minutes faster than the last time I ran it) so a little improvement, if only I can just keep it up...

Wow Lisa, you really put me to shame with your 14 miles while sick! I thought my DW and DD's colds would pass without me getting it but sure enough, I did.

As opposed to getting out and toughing it out, I laid around and whimpered like a baby. Yeah, no one here felt sorry for me either. :rotfl:

My wife did get me out for another walk last night as it was nearly 80 degrees. That must be some kind of record for here as it rarely gets to 80 in the summer. It was a beautiful walk but I did cough and hack the entire time.

I'm still a bit groggy from a NyQuil hangover. :hippie: I had only about 5 hours of sleep due to my own tossing and turning and DD waking up five times for various reasons.

I'll get in some light exercise the next few nights and then I'll be disappearing for a few days as we have family coming up for Easter.

Good morning Goofs. Short report from my 5K this past Saturday, the Windermere Run Among the Lakes 5K. The course was listed as hard packed sand on the waters edge. I was told by 2 different people who've done this race before that I would hate the course and have shoes full of sand by the finish. Well, it rained on and off most of the week and even at 4am on race morning and it helped to pack it down some more so there were very few spots of loose sand. The course itself was beautiful with amazing scenery. I'm not talented enough to race with a camera in hand so no scenery pictures but next time I am in the area, I will take my camera with me to get some shots. Timing chip was on a velcro band that went on your ankle. Different but forgot about it after a few minutes. Beautiful morning with temps in the mid 70s and very sunny. Offical results says 45:11 but my Garmin says 44:06 with mileage of 3.36 miles! At the mile 1 sign, Garmin said 1.08 miles (I figured this because of weaving) but at mile 2 sign it said 2.26 and then finished at 3.36 :confused3. Not too many pictures, waiting for the official ones. Sorry, I know I said a short report...

Coming around the last curve towards the finish line with my friend Kristen.

Hello Super Goofs!!!! I am still here just really really busy! Luckily, I am on Spring Break from work this week, so I have a little free time! Between training for my half marathon on may 3, playing hockey 2-3 times a week, and planning my wedding..on top of all my other daily responsibilities, my computer time is limited! It looks like everyone has been keeping up with their training...I need to update the spreadsheet for the rest of March and beginning of April, so that will help our numbers!

Suzanne-Great job on your race! You have been doing alot of races lately..good for you! Keep up the good work!

Maura--How is the speed training going? I have been doing a lot of that and my mile times have been pretty good! Any races coming up?

Cecilia--I hear you that it is supposed to be warm on spring break...it has been relatively warm the last few weeks here in NJ...then yesterday on my first day of vacation it was pouring, now today it is cold..we can't win!!!

Megan--Glad you had fun at the ball game..I saw the pics on facebook. One of these years I want to get to an opening day game. We tried to get tickets for opening day at the stadium for the Mets but had no luck! Oh well!.

Lisa--Finishing the CMM in a few weeks will make all the time and training worth it. I said the same thing as you are now before my first disney marathon, and the feeling of crossing that finish line and getting that medal made it all worth! you are going to do great, and I have a feeling you will want to do another!

To anyone I missed...sorry! I will try to check in more often, especially this week while I am off! It is time to get ready to go for a run!

Quick drive by- I think I was able to update the totals okay.

My poor pony has a wound that is requiring a lot of my time today. I planned on a yoga class and a spin class today but I ended up hand walking him around and replacing his dressing several times- the silly thing would not stay put and I have done hundreds of dressings! (on people- never horses!)

Monday I ran for 3 miles in 30 minutes- pain free!! I am so afraid of my knee issue flairing up so I didn't push it. I also met with my personal trainer. I have lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks doing weight watchers. He never said anything so I said "haven't you noticed I've lost so much weight? His answer- your arms do look skinnier!

I guess that is a safe response but skinnier arms was not quite what I was going for!

I also rode a different horse on Monday for one hour- I'll have to update the totals.

Hey Everyone! It's mixer time!!!!!

We are having a mixer! Jack has once again shown up with an idea. Tomorrow we ALL want to know what your very favorite movie is. I don't mean just a movie you like! I mean the ONE movie that you would choose to have on a deserted island. Just you and the movie!!!

And as long as we are talking movies, what goes better with a movie than the perfect snack??? Tell us about your movie snack. Maybe you do something that is just so kewl that the rest of us need to try it too!!!!

So, choose your movies well!! You are stuck with 'em until you are rescued!!!!

Joanne Glad your knee is pain-free. You would think a trainer would notice such a significant difference!

Laurie Speed work is still on the list. Since I am trying to train for a tri, I am only running 2x/week, so I am using 2 of the running workouts that I ws doing before. The plan I followed must have worked, cause my March race was really speedy! (for me anyway). No races planned (I don't commit til late) but am seriously thinking of a 10k race at end of May--that would be a good goal to see if I am still maintaining any speed.

Today I did intervals (200,400,600,800,800,600,400,200) in 7:03 to 7:18. It was rough and my "cool-down" was a walk!

Hope everyone is enjoying their day.

Hey Team!

Got in hour of weight/core work last night including the 2 min cardio bursts. Those get tough toward the end. On way home realized it was voting day, so since I hadn't changed out of my work out gear, went home and jogged to/from polling place. It's only .7 miles rt but jogged there and back. Accomplishment for me so I'll take it!

Have IL inaugural 1/2 marathon Saturday. Hoping to PR as it's a flat course unlike CMM in two weeks. We'll just have to see how it goes.

BTW, I have lost my mind...signed up for Goofy 2010. I blame Kim...still....

Hope everyone is having a great Wednesday!

Maura, yes, I am trying to get more of my coworkers out there running. 2 of the 5 in the picture didn't do the ESPN race so I think we'll probably have a different group at each race but I am excited about that!! Heya Goofs - this is going to be short, since I have been without access for a few days, and haven't caught up yet.

Still running - 3.8 miles or so Mon and Tues (both times faster than planned, Monday was much too fast). A slightly more relaxed 5.something today, and (hopefully) a slow and easy 3.8 tomorrow and Friday, then it's marathon day on Saturday. I'll catch my miles and minutes up when I can use my home machine and get the data for everything off my Garmie.

Morning morning. New computer. Loss of ergo keyboard. Excuse all typos please!!! :surfweb: I have a new Lenovo and it is very different from the old 2000 year old Gateway. Speed is great, shortcut keys are irritating me a little though. As is this straight keyboard...

Suzanne, I have not heard from Susie. No one has. Debra (deekaypee) is handling the team assignments for now. I have PM'd Susie as have lots of others with no response. This did happen last spring also and I am hoping it is just a passing thing. I am sad to say the least...Susie we miss you!! :guilty:

SAHdad, super best of luck this weekend!! My first marathon is in 2 weeks so I will surely be thinking of you! :cheer2:

Liz and Joanne, well you girls are just Goofy. I looked, and looked, and am still looking....:rolleyes1 It is still under consideration but now there are tryouts for a field hockey team going to Indio, CA for a festival in November. November to CA and February to FL will do us in on vacay funds for the year. :sad1:

Mike,

Joanne, :wizard::love: to Seamus. I hope he is okay.

Laurie, good to hear from you.

Angie, :flower3:

Everyone else I missed,

My day was going really well yesterday. I had missed the 8 miler on Tuesday due to the computer install taking longer than it should have so I decided to run it yesterday. My Garmin magically came back to life (:woohoo:) and off I went. Eight miles at a 9:50 mpm average. Not bad for a short girl.... Then I went to print out my CMM confirmation card and discovered that some brain surgeon took my time from the Applefest half and determined my finish time to be 4:45:00 :scared1:. Yeah, you read that right. Here I was thinking that 5 to 5:30 would make me happy. So what does DH say?? I think you can do it. :scared1::scared1: And you all wonder why I am crazy... :sad2: Still shooting for 5 to 5:30 and being realistic that I can maintain the under 10 mpm pace for a nice flat half but not so much for a rolling hilly full. VAB will be my new half PR. My PR for the full is finish and be able to walk to the Wildhorse for a beer afterward!!!! Right Patrick....popcorn::

Wow! Two pain free knees! Congrats Mike and Joanne! I know that feels good. And congrats on the weight loss too Joanne!! Awesome.

Lisa did you have to say two weeks! I could really use another week to tweak my training. 8 miles at a 9:50 pace is awesome though. The good news about the time estimate is that it will have you starting in an earlier corral which if its hot could be a huge advantage. Don't worry about your time, just run and experience it. Time is for the second marathon.

Liz - Congrats on commiting to the Goofy!! I loved doing the Goofy and you will too. I had two totally different experiences but they were both great so I know you will have a blast!! Start building your base miles now so you can feel extra confident going into the "real" training.

SAHDad - Good Luck this weekend! You sound like you are ready! I can't wait to read all about it.

As for me, I am trying to figure out why I am so tired all the time. I mean more tired than I really should be. I should be doing speed work but I am happy just to get my runs in. Hoping its just the pollen and it will go away soon.

Joanne - party at the back in Jan! DH and I decided want to enjoy it - stay together, take lots of pics instead of just head down and moving forward.

Cecilia - I am excited about the Goofy! I have 3 half marathons in the next 6 weeks so that'll help keep mileage up. I spend most of the summer cycling and want to do a century ride this year (can't believe I agreed to that) so that will help as well. Just have to figure out when to start actual Goofy training and how to plan back-to-backs. Suggestions?

Lisa - you know you want to....Can room with us at villa if that'll help.

SAHDad - you going to be at Champaign Saturday? We're doing the half not the full but looking forward to the inaugural.

Maura - enjoy the 4 day weekend!

Mike - YAY on pain free knees!!

Didnt' get out last night. Just wasn't feeling right (achy all over) and with Saturday's race decided not to push it. Today is sunny, NOT windy and nice temps so will get in a walk before dinner. I didn't train as much as I should have for the Goofy, but I started doing back-to-back long runs in October or so. If you can get to the point where you can do a 10 on Saturday and a 20 on Sunday, you're set.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing! I was finally able to get outside for a run today, it is beautiful here in NJ! I have been really slacking on my training, and I have my 1/2 marathon in a month! YIKES! I did 5 miles today and felt fine, but we shall see what happens after this weekends LR of 10 miles!

Liz--Congrats on signing up for the Goofy! I had so much fun doing it this year, I signed up the day I got back from WDW in January for next year!! I never ever thought I would say it but I can't wait!! I started my official Goofy training in September. I followed a Higdon beginner marathon program and threw in a bunch of back to back runs throughout. The longest back to back I did was 9 and 18, and I was fine during the races, in fact, I did FAR better than I ever anticipated--I PR'd in the marathon!!!

Suzanne--I was wondering about Susie as well. I hope she is doing well!

Lisa--You can do it! You can definetely break 5:30 with the training you have done! Don't worry about it so much and just go for it! And, on another note, I thought I had a busy schedule...but you are WAY more busy than me, with all that you do!!!!

SAHDad--Good Luck this weekend!

Cecilia--I used to say the same thing about being tired all the time, so I went to the doctor and turns out that I have an underactive thyroid. Feeling tired and rundown is one of the symptoms. You may not have this at all, but it is just a thought.

To anyone I missed..sorry! Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Wow, it is quiet....

So I had yesterday off--the perfect amount of time to get in a quality workout, which I didn't. I took a rest day! I did take the dog for a walk and do some Internet searching for things for household repairs. And watch opening day (yeah, Tigers!) and the Masters.

Today, did a swim. 1000 yds. Guy started swimming in "my" lane without letting me know (Usually, people wait until you can see they're there and then ask/comment that they are going to share). Kicked me in the middle of the lane, I came up sputtering. When I commented to him that I would have appreicated his letting me know he was going to share and that he kciked me, he just told me "you were swimming in the middle of the lane". Well, duh, I wouldn't have been if you had just let me know (Which I did not say). He left after about 4 laps, because, as I told him, I'm a slow swimmer, plus I was doing drills. I can play nice, if you play nice.

Okay, off my soapbox. Time to finish taxes--6 reports (2 mine/DH, 2 DD, 2DS) and maybe go shop for some clearance bike clothing.

Just want to say Happy Easter to all those who celebrate.

DD is on Spring Break this week so probably no long walk day for me but I hope to get on the treadmill at home a couple of times. I've realized that I need to add the treadmill back into my exercise program as the bike infront of the TV just isn't doing it for me. So while my monthly times should remain about the same, my mileage will go down. I've got to shake it up alittle!

I started looking at some local races yesterday, and might sign up for two in the same week. Yikes! I just know that soon it will be too hot to race, so I've got to get a couple in while I still can.

I ran the 5K trail yesterday. The huge hill kicked my rear again, but I did run more of it than I used to. I finished in 38 minutes.

Have a great weekend and/or a happy Easter and/or Passover.

Hey Goofs!
Back from Hilton Head late last night. Had some rain, cold, wind and then finally some sun. :yay: Girls got a little beach and pool time before we had to leave and I still managed to get a little sun burned. :rolleyes1
Hope everyone has been well since I left. Apparently the time has come for us to get with the real world and get a laptop and/or cell with email cause we missed some important emails while gone. :headache: So maybe next time we go out of town I'll be able to check in. :surfweb:

So the big news is I ran for the first time since my surgery six weeks ago. It was tough, but I did it. My face was red as fire each time I finished. Very scary looking! :scared: So here's my runs -

Monday - 2 miles / 22:34 / pace -11:17
Tuesday - 2 miles / 22:41 / pace - 11:21
Thursday - 3 miles / 32:25 / pace - 10:48 :woohoo:

Also, got in some bike time going to the beach that I want to give to Beth, Lisa and Mike for being so supportive of me when I was feeling like a lazy bum. You guys are the best! :grouphug: These miles were done with a big smile on my face as I was following my daughters riding to and from the beach. :goodvibes So please add to your own totals -

Beth - 3 miles / 40 minutes
Lisa - 3 miles / 40 minutes
Mike - 3 miles / 40 minutes

Mike, I saw your post from the 5th and I want you to please keep those 5 miles and 90 minutes for yourself. That was super sweet of you, but I feel like this was my week to get back out there.

Sooo, I'm back in the game. Go Goofs! :cheer2:

1) Welcome Back SHAN! Way to go! :cheer2::cheer2::yay::yay::woohoo::woohoo:

2) Maura: While I'm astounded at the rudeness of that guy...I wish I could say i were surprised. Normally if I'm wanting to get into a lane, I'll just sit on the edge with my feet in the water...they always see it. What a jerk. Good for you for keeping your cool and staying with your plan.

We drove down to Champaign yesterday so that I could relay with my nephew, brother and SIL for the inaugural Illini marathon. VERY crowded, but very pleasant...although the start was a wee bit chilly.

Got in a 10k, pretty much knee pain free miles, so I'm feeling pretty darn good about that!

Humorous story, when I came into view of my brother (whom I was handing off to), and my wife and kids, I was about 1/4 mile away. My brother leans over to DW and says "Oh no, he looks hurt."

and pauses.

and says "Maybe he just looks like that cause he's a big guy"

pauses "but he looks hurt"

Finally DW says, "no, he's not hurt, he has to work harder than you since he's 60 lbs heavier than you...graceful isn't something thats easy to do when you are 215 lbs." :lmao:

Then we drove home, and fired up the smoker since it was 50 and sunny here in Chicago. Sat outside and had a couple of drinks with DW while the chicken smoked, and watched our little guys riding bikes and playing at the park across the street from our house.

Really, it was a heckuva good day!

hmm. I started training for goofy in August but I ramped up very slow to begin with. You sound like you are already up there so I would say to keep up the training you are doing now as your base and then start Goofy Training in September.
I have a different philosophy about the back to back runs than most. Since I am an "older" runner, I did not do back to back long runs. My typical training week has me running 3 or 4 days in a row already and the older you are, the more important those rest days become. So what I did was to up my mid week runs to much higher than typical mileage 8-10-8 most weeks and then run my long run after a rest day.
I was pretty sick during the middle of my Goofy training and had to severely cut my mileage to try to recover. I was expecting that the marathon part was going to be miserable and that I would walk alot of it. Instead, I PR'd.

I really believe that the real trick to having a good experience at the Goofy is to learn to get your body recovered very quickly. There are all sorts of tricks that people use and some will work better for you than others. If I were you, I would use these half marathons to test what works best.

For me, I lose my appetite after the half but if I force myself to eat, I recover faster. I also took extreme ice baths after the half each time. I am talking massive amounts of ice for 20 minutes. Its miserable but it really makes a huge difference. Then there is hydration, nutrition, etc etc ad nauseum. Luckily, you have months to figure it out!

Feel free to post pictures, talk about how the foods help you in your training (either as nutrition or reward), and confess to guilty pleasures and happy indulgences!

Happy Monday everyone!! I did not get a chance to say Happy Easter so rewind and add that too!! :goodvibes

This new computer has a mind of its own. It is just randomly eating my documents so I have to stay off most sites as IT keeps checking in to see what it is doing at any given time. You will see little of me during the day. I am lurking though...:surfweb:

Marathon training continues. My 20 mile run yesterday was interrupted by 40 mph winds and a coughing spell when one gust hit me head on while negotiating a hill. I could not stop coughing and had to call DH for a ride. I did finish the miles with the walking DVD so all are done, just not fast. I averaged an 11:45 pace with the walking.

Rich, super congrats. :cheer2::cheer2:

Liz and Patrick, how did the race go for both of you????

Cecilia, I am finding rest days more important right now too. I was biking on my optional days but now I am just resting and my next LR is better because of it.

Mike, Yay for a painless run! I am sure you still look great at 215 no matter what your DW says!!!!

Shan, thanks for the miles back but I really wish you would keep them. I am racking up lots right now. How about adding them back to you and when I need them (cuz I am sure I will) you can donate toward my total. Deal???

Beth, way to hang in with the consistency.

Joanne, how is Shamus?

Kim, great job on the race. I have a love/hate relationship with hills myself.

Maura, :wizard:.

Suzanne, your consistency puts us all to shame, well except for Beth!

Everyone else, :grouphug:

Have a great day everyone!!

Congrats on the 20 miler. That is an awesome pace given the wind, coughing and having to switch over to the DVD. I'd be happy with that pace for a 2 miler right now!

Good Morning!

Real quick run by. I'll do a full report later but I PR'd my half Saturday -- 3:11. Eleven minutes slower than I wanted but that's 10 min off last half and 4 min off my full split time. (Not counting Princess half since I stopped all over for pics.)

Will catch up later.

Sorry, I haven't fallen off the face of the Earth Goofs. It's been a tough few weeks health, stress and training-wise.

I've been keeping up with the spreadsheet but just not the posting. Now that our house just emptied out this morning from Easter visits, I can get back to eating and exercise right.

I still have the slight cough and runny nose from my nasty cold but it's not going to slow me down too much. This is Day 1 of my new marathon training program. It's nice that I get to cut back on miles for a while but just add an extra day.

I just did a 5mi "long" run this morning in 0:47. It was extremely hard but it felt really good. It's been way too long since I've been outside for a training run. In fact, aside from races, I can't remember the last time I've been off the treadmill so I'm glad to change that now.

I'll catch up on posts in the next few days but I just wanted to tell everyone what a great job you are doing. Keep up the great work and Happy (belated) Easter!

Ok, posted report in the thread for this past weekend's events.

Cecilia - thx for the input. As another "older" runner/walker I was also a bit concerned about multiple back to back long runs during training. As the weather eventually improves I'll be doing long rides Sat then long run Sun. Works out then as that on weekends, Mon off, Tue-Thu run/ct combo, Fri off. Gets me two rest days a week which my body really seems to prefer. Can do with only one but then need to pull back on either distance or intensity during the week. Also gives me time to test recovery methods between Sat/Sun.

Want to enjoy the experience, as well.

Real quick catch up:
Mike - WTG on the relay; wish we knew you were going to be there. BTW, you doing the duathlon this year?

SAHDad - Congrats!!!

Morning all, morning Mikey!!!! :goodvibes

I took a well deserved rest day yesterday (after the talk with Ceclia and the importance thereof for us elderly statesmen :lmao:) and I feel a lot better today. I felt a little guilty and I did do some weights but no cardio at all. Today is a 9 miler and hopefully I have got enough in me to finish in under 1:30 so I have time to swab down and change clothes to pick up kids. My DD14 would shoot me if I showed up all sweaty smelly AND in my running clothes.

Trying to figure out plane/trip snackage so I can pick it all up at the grocery store. Stopped at the NB outlet yesterday and scored some mens tech tees for $10 then found out the whole store was 20% off so, of course, I had to get some for myself too. :rolleyes1 I have started setting clothes out for the trip being that it is still only in the 40s here and will be 70s and 80s while we are in Nashville. Yeah, figured out the hydration schedule for 40 degrees pretty well....80 not so much...:scared: This worries me a bit but I know Patrick won't let me pass out on the side of the road somewhere...

Hi all,

Back to work for me today after a 4 day weekend. Guilt for not going to the gym on my days off, but I'll get over it--just consider it a little "rest day shifting"! I did get the spreadsheet updated for me (including some in March that I guess I hadn't done.) Also, did taxes, ordered a part for my oven (I'm doing the repair myself) and found some other needed household repair items online. So not a total waste.

Today I went to the pool--only didn't have my goggles. Fortunately, I had brought other clothes so I did my bike workout instead. 50 minutes inclluding 5 short hill repeats.

Liz Congrats on your half. A PR when you aren't expecting it, or are having difficulties, is sweeter than sweet.

SAHDad WTG on your PR. You and Mike vie for the title of "Machine"!

Lisa Ooh...bargains. I wonder if my local NB store is also having a sale. Although I have decided no new clothes purchases til after next Tuesday (layoff day), just in case.

Have a good day, everybody.

Hi All -

Question: CMM is next Saturday. I want one more long run before then and Dh has convinced me to do it Thursday to give me a couple extra days to rest. Do I run 8, 10, or 12 ??? My 12 mile run this weekend got cut to 10 because Dh's knee was acting up but I felt strong enough I could have run 14 or more. I ran 12 the week before so I have the miles banked. I don't know what to do!!!

Lisa - We are driving to CMM and we are staying at the same hotel, so if you need me to bring anything with me, let me know. We are packing a cooler for the finish line because we are planning to wait and see you finish!

Mike - I seriously doubt getting shot will make you feel better. Although, it might force you to get some rest. As for me, I have found that getting to bed 30 minutes earlier every night is making a huge difference. I thought I was getting plenty of rest but evidently I need a little more right now.

Heads up, dear Wish teams, members and fans! We are doing another mixer. This one is dedicated to Vicky, our own little bunnyfoo!

The question is this: What is your favorite vegetable recipe? Double points if it is not just a sidedish or salad! The points can be cashed in duing marathon weekend when you see how your recipe helped us all become lythe and sleek, knowing beyond a doubt that we, all of WISH, are the best team there!!

Hello Goofs, just updated the spread sheet. DD is on Spring break this week so I took a couple of extra days off from work and we've been non stop. Thats a good thing right! Weather was terrible today, woke up to hail hitting my bedroom window. Suppose to be sunny and warm the rest of the week.

I'd probably do the 8 mile and do it Wednesday. For me anyway, a lot of rest for at least three days before a big race always seems to give me a huge boost that day. I may be in a small minority though. Have a great time!

I ended up biking 14.2 miles yesterday in addition to my 5.1 miles run.

Today, I did 30 minutes of yoga and biked another 6.92 miles. I had a scare as I've been unable to find my Garmin for two days now. My wife and I tore the house and both vehicles up looking for that thing (all the while her reminding me how much I spent on it. :sad2:)

Fortunately I just found it. Would you believe it was right where I left it? :rotfl2:

The good news is I found a $250 Home Depot gift card that has been missing since 2006 while searching. Yeah, we're nothing if not organized. Lucky for us it's still good so I see some shopping in our near future.

I'm going out of town for business tomorrow so I want to explore a little and get some miles in and hopefully hang on to my Garmin this time!

Mike, sorry about the pool! :headache:

Just posted some miles onto the spreadsheet. I ran 2 yesterday (10:41 pace) and another 2 this morning (10:56 pace). It went better this morning. Yesterday I felt HORRIBLE at the end and almost felt like I was either gonna get sick and/or faint. I really tried to slow myself down this morning. It seems like it went a little easier last week when I was at the beach. Might just be a mental thing, I don't know! :confused3 Gonna take off tomorrow and try and run 3 miles again on Friday. I hope it gets easier soon cause I'm really debating on signing up for the full...

Mike I share your pool frustration. Yesterday I got to the gym as the doors opened, ran into the locker room, dumped my stuff, grabbed my goggles--where are my goggles? no goggles! AARGH! Changed my clothes and biked instead.

Steve Glad you found your Garmin and Woohoo on the gift card. I still have a 10 year old certificate for a massage at Nordstrom that I haven't used. Little treasures!

I got in 1.5 miles last night. I forgot my time though. 24 minutes maybe. I got to try out my new sneakers though and had to be creative with the nike+ transmitter since I forgot to buy a pocket for it. The new sneakers are New Balance. My feet feel good today (aside from the normal aches and pains that I had before the new sneakers). Hopefully I'll be able to start having less pain now that I have sneakers that fit better. Or at least my toes won't be so ugly.

Megan, good for you for re-starting C25K! I probably should have done that after the half, instead of slacking for weeks and weeks.

I got in a little over 3 miles in 40 minutes during DS's baseball practice. My left ankle felt iffy (time for new orthotics and/or shoes, I think), so I took a LONG walk break in the middle. I got back to b-ball, and it was SO dull to watch, I ended up stretching for a while and then running another ten minutes just because it was better than shivering and watching him practice (bad mommy!). So all told, 4.01 miles in 50 minutes.

My "official" training period begins on May 2, and I'm still trying to find a good plan for doing the DL Half followed by my first-ever marathon a mere 18 weeks later. I'm getting nervous that I'll injure myself during the half like I did in January, so I hope I'll be mentally able to treat the half like a "long run" rather than a race once I get there. I can't afford to take much time off after the half, so I know I need to take it easy and not push myself. Any other suggestions?

PS: I think this is as close to "going Goofy" as I'm going to get. I don't know how you people do it! :)

I lost my stirrup when he dropped his shoulder and ran out then he went bucking and galloping across the ring- three times! I finally got my confidence back and he had to be crazy! I just started a marathon training program and noticed it's a pretty big step down to start. If you start on week 1, it should be a lot easier than what you built up to for the half training. You can gauge how you feel with if you should start on week 1 or not.

Most training programs have a two week (or so) easy program for immediately following the race so that should give you some time to ease back in to it as well. Best of luck!

Shan - Good luck getting over the rut. Hopefully it is just mental. I know I'm going through something and I just don't feel right out there. It seems much harder than it should. Take care!

Megan - Great job! Let me know if your Nike+ ever goes out on you. I had one and loved it. My Nano unfortunately didn't make it more than a couple of months after I bought the transmitter. I wish it worked for the Shuffle or Video. If you ever lose yours, let me know and I'll be happy to send the two pieces to you.

AFM, I'm out of town right now but just ran 4.17 miles in 35 minutes on a neat little trail. It was all concrete and very hilly and was pretty hard for me. It is also about 20 degrees warmer here than at home and I'd definitely not used to it!

Thanks for the advice, Steve. Good job on your run tonight. I just ran around the lakes in my office park for the first time. It was entirely sidewalk, which made it tough. I had my Garmin, but I guess I failed to push the button when I thought I did. I caught the mistake 5-7 minutes into the run, so I put my best guess on the spreadsheet. My 6.5 is supposed to be on Tuesday but since we fly that day I will get it out of the way on Monday and take a rest day (except for walking around Nashville) on Tuesday. So my vote would be 12 either yesterday or today.

Hopefully I can get to a Whole Foods Market in Nashville and find some coconut water. It is my new favorite post run drink!! The cooler offer is awesome, thanks. PS How big is the bridge in Nashville? I have bridgeophobia...:scared1: Sad but true.

Hi All -

Well, I ended up running a mean 10 miles today. I say mean, because my legs were tired by mile 6 and really dead at 8. If I had felt strong, I would have done 12 but I decided 10 was enough.

Lisa - Let me know if you need me to run by a whole foods for you. I can't believe you are running 14 this weekend, thats alot with one week to go. I'll have to look, but I usually stick to 10 that close to the race.

Mike - I hate it when they close the pool with no warning! Glad the knee is still handling the runs without too much pain! Thats awesome. Enjoy your Scotch.

Maura - I am with Shan, I love Disney in October. Its just about perfect.

Kim - I always start a plan where I am. So if the mileage is lower than what you usually run, stay with what you are already doing until the plan catches up. Its amazing to me that they can make a machine that measures your run from space but they can make it turn on automatically when you start moving!

Joanne - I am so impressed that you could keep that a secret from your kids! I think I would send mine on a scavenger hunt and each stop would have a clue.

Take care all!

Sorry Maura, I am a little late. Too much on my mind lately I guess...:sad2:

Today it is supposed to be in the mid-60s here. :woohoo::yay::dance3: I have on my running skirt and shirt that I plan to race in. Add on the belt and pack and an 8 mile run test drive on this gorgeous day. I won't have another chance unless I run inside...:scared: and we all know how I love that so..:rolleyes1 I am getting pretty excited to say the least.

Cecilia, I am following the Runners World plans that they had out last year. I think you can still access them on the site. They were keeping a high miles base and then training in 4 weeks for a race. You have to up the LR miles incrementally before starting the marathon plan. I did change it up a bit after talking with a woman who has run Boston numerous times. I was supposed to do 22 last week according to the plan and she advised no more than 20 two weeks out so I did listen to her, no really I did. I figure I will strike out and as long as I make 10 good solid miles it will be enough but if I feel really really good and want to do the 14, I will. The plan calls for 14-16 so at least I am going with the lesser miles...right...:upsidedow

I do plan to hit the Whole Foods Market. It looks easy enough to find. I want some fruit and healthy snackage in the hotel so I don't make bad choices. DD14 and DH started a weight challenge today seeing who can lose 10 pounds in a month. My bets are on DD! I just need to make sure she is eating and not skipping meals in order to win. I don't know where she gets her competitive nature from...:confused3

So packing, 8 miles, softball scrimmage, and who ever knows what else will come up this afternoon! I am hoping to get all laundry taken care of and bags packed by Monday so I can work and get my run in and then relax. We have to decide whether to drive down and stay in a hotel or get up at 2 in the morning and drive to the airport. Guess which one the kids vote for???

Hey Goofs!

I have to confess that I let everyone on the team down today. I still did my run (faster than I intended, but it just felt so good to move fast again that I couldn't resist!), but I did not check the time before I did the yardwork today.

Sure, it may not count like much exercise to remove a hedgerow (11 bushes, though I still have to cut the stumps out), hauled 400 pounds of sand around (to fill the new sandbox), and cut up a bunch of brush left over from the end of last summer and fall, but I probably should have glanced at the clock before I started that stuff.

It was a nice day here so I attempted to repeat my recent trail race through the forest. Of course I got lost and ended up making up my own course. Being a guy, I was much to proud to ask anyone for directions so I just zipped along as if I knew where I was going.

I did 3 really difficult and steep miles in 35 minutes but it felt great. I've got a rest day tomorrow (I'll do some yoga and strength training) and will have my long run on Monday.

I got in 10 sloppy miles in 100 minutes...right knee was very tight for about 5, then it loosened up, and I was run with little to no pain...for me, I was flying.

Lap speed ranged from over 11 to 9:25.

Not bad for a fat guy recovering from surgery...

Great job, you guys! The boys are really racking up the miles and minutes for us! Mike, I'm glad to hear the knee decided to get with the program after "only" 5 miles of feeling tight.

I did an 8K today and finished in the top 30, which sounds really impressive until I tell you that I was actually the dreaded Dead Last Finisher. There were only 27 of us running the darn thing. (The 8K race was dovetailed in, as an afterthought I'm sure, to be part of a decent-sized local duathlon.) I felt good until mile 3, when my IT band jumped up and said, "Hey, remember me?" The self-proclaimed "slow" runners had kept a pace under 11-minute miles, and I'd made the mistake of trying to keep up with them instead of my usual long run 12:30 pace, so it's no wonder I had a flare up after 3 miles. I walked most of the remainder of the course, but at least I got to chat with the TNT tri coach who had volunteered to bring up the rear.

Oh well, DLF>DNF>>DNS, right? I'm so honored the WISHers have a slogan that's all about me!

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

And now for a bit of silliness, just because... :teeth: The mixer starts here. (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=31422446&postcount=733)

This week's mixer theme is "Superpowers That Would Be More Trouble Than They're Worth," and your question:

What would be the superpower you would end up being granted?

Some examples:

The ability to tell the future, but only one minute ahead of time.
Super-strength, but only in your thumbs.
The ability to read the minds of people whose language you don't understand.
The ability to see through one layer of clothes.
Super breath, strong enough to knock down your opponents. Unfortunately, it's because you're smells like garlic and you always have that power.

Of course, your superpower is unique to you. So feel free to tell us what you would do with your power or why you got so lucky as to be given it. :rolleyes1 Bonus points--again, they're worth nothing--for telling us what superpowers you think other WISHers might get. (Keep it DIS-friendly, though, folks!)

Busy day for me with packing, printing boarding passes, cleaning up, downloading movies to the Touch, etcetera. I amongst that I need to work too. Trying to do things as I remember them so I don't forget them later!!

I had a great 12 mile run yesterday. I had 14 on and Cecelia advised 10 so I split the difference. I felt really good and held an 11:06 mpm average pace. I was surprised when I got home as I felt a little slower but all in all I am happy and I feel like I am trained well enough to finish this. Still nervous, don't get me wrong. Lisa Have a great time at Nashville!

My training partner ALMOST had me talked into skipping today's swim and going to breakfast.

Good thing I was driving, or I'd be here with a stomach full of an Omega skillet, instead of being the proud owner of 2400 yards in 50 minutes in the pool. He decided to bag the swim after about 15 minutes...no reflection on him, some days you got it, some days not so much.

That said, I thought I was going to die; I'm kind of motivated now, so I might try to make up the 45 minute spin I missed yesterday...I was too lazy to get out the bike trainer, and it was raining pretty much all day, so I couldn't get interested enough to ride outside, either.

Stick with it goofs; the rewards are worth it!

Morning Goofs!

I'm sore now, and later will be in all kinds of hurt. The local Y is doing what they call the "60 Mile Mountain Challenge". Basically, outside miles count normally. But, in order for treadmill miles to count, you run the first half mile at 3%, and then add .5% for each extra half mile. When you hit the top of the "mountain", you get to start decreasing your incline at the same rate.

For example - today, my first half mile was at 3%, then .5 at 3.5%, .5 at 4%, .5 at 4.5%, .5 at 5%, and .5 at 5.5%. The next two miles I did flat, so they don't count. Tomorrow, when I start my run, I have to pick up at the 6% mark if I want to count it. Most of the mountains are anywhere from 5 to 6 miles up (and the same amount down).

So I had three miles of progressively harder inclines, and then a couple "easy" miles - much faster, but flat, so it felt like I was flying.

Lisa - Good job on the 12 miler. You've trained hard for this - you'll do fine.

Mike - Good thing I wasn't there. Breakfast can be hard to resist. Good job on the pool.

Yesterday I walked the neighborhood while my oldest rode her bike. I'm guessing it was around 2 miles and maybe 35 minutes? Normally I wouldn't count this in my own log, but I'm definitely counting it in the Goof's log. ;)
We have some new ducks at our neighborhood lake and we named them Snow White, Cinderella and Prince Charming. :)

This morning officially started my Peachtree training. I ran 2 miles in 22:21. I'm really struggling. I keep trying to slow myself down, but it is like I wanna go at my old speed. I keep having this nagging feeling in the back of my head to just give up, but I promise I won't!

Good luck to all of you going to the CMM! You're gonna rock! And remember those miles count as double! :thumbsup2

I agree! I don't like to do any kind of incline on the TM, so that would just about destroy me. Best of luck with the challenge!

I went for a 1-mile "stress relief" walk this afternoon. Got back to my desk and the stress was still there, plus more stuff came up that made me even more stressed, so I went back out for another mile. Too bad the work was still here when I got back. :sad2: Oh well. I was planning on staying late anyway, so the 32 minutes away from my desk shouldn't make much difference in the amount of work I get (or don't get) done today.

I'm thinking about doing some of my training "long runs" as long walks instead. I'm afraid my IT band will flare up during the DL half or the WDW marathon, so I want to work on speeding up my walk pace and increasing my walking endurance just in case. I'd love to know that I can walk faster than the sweep pace so I can be semi-prepared should disaster strike and I'm unable to run/walk the full distance as planned. Any thoughts?

Hi Goofs!

Ok I know I am only doing the half but I am loving this tamper thingy right now. Allergies have kicked in full gear and I NEED the rest! Enjoy the flowers Shan cause they are killing me!

Kim - The trick to avoiding It band issues is to build your mileage SLOWLY. I suggest building your miles to as high a sustainable level as you can & then start adding in some speed to that. Also, with ITbands you HAVE to respect your rest days. No shopping on rest days! Not even the grocery store.

Mike - Glad you stuck to your exercise! Its tough some days and you have to take pride in those small victories!

Yesterday I walked the neighborhood while my oldest rode her bike. We used to do this! We'd take the kids to the trail and the girls would be ride their bikes and keep up with their Dad while I ran along beside my son. It lasted for a couple of very pleasant months and we got a bunch of 5 mile sunday runs that way. Then one day, I got to the turn around point with my son and I thought I was going to die. I told Dh to take him back with them and that he might have to carry me if I couldn't make it back. Dh clocked him on the way back - he was riding at 8 minute miles. That was the end of those runs.....

Take care everyone!

Good job on your 8K Kim. I had a DLF once back in August. It was a fundraiser for the university's cross country team. The only people running were members of the XC team and our local running club. Yeah, I didn't think I stood much of a chance.

I was actually running with a girl from the XC team toward the end and we both started sprinting for the finish line. These old legs just couldn't keep up with her and I finished a few seconds behind.

I just ran 5.1 trail miles at our local marsh/bird sanctuary. It was my first time exploring that place and it was really neat. I got to see a lot of critters. All the chirping and sounds of the water was very zen-like. It was a really cool experience and I'm glad I didn't wear headphones.

It was about 65 degrees which was a real scorcher for what I'm used to so I slowed down pretty quickly. I picked it up at the end as I was shooting for a sub-10 minute mile. I finished just under at 50 minutes.

Steve, sounds like a great place that you found to run...I sometimes will run at the Morton Arboretum here in Lisle; very peaceful.

We also have a nice trail here that I like to run early in the mornings called Centennial trail...you go from forest to prairie back to forest. I could have my meat freezer filled for a year if I could harvest 1/3 of the deer that I see there each time I run!

oh well....thats what happens when you live near people who think meat grows in cellophane packaging...

Have an awesome day Goofs!

Hi guys Today is our day to find out whether we still have jobs. Signs in our group are that we will. I brought donuts AND bagels (all of you who hate simple carbs are free to leave the area!)

I didn't feel like swimming or running today, so I decided to lift weights instead. The thing I am finding about tri training is that since I have to do 6 workouts (2 each swim, run bike) it makes my schedule fairly rigid--even for the puny sprint tri that I am planning for. It's beginning to feel somewhat stifling. Oh well, at least it's exercise!

Kim Good for you, DLF or not!

Mike Glad to hear your knee is getting back to normal and your runs are getting faster.

This was a rest day in my program. I still did 30 minutes of strength training and took a nice 1.6 mile walk at lunchtime. Most of the rest of the state is going through a heat spell. It only got to 65ish here today so it was perfect!

Our running club has a meeting tomorrow night for Relay for Life. In addition to all the fundraising ideas, we are picking our slots for our time on the track. I've done this for a few years through my work but it's my first year on this team. What I didn't realize is that they literally have someone running the track for the entire 24 hours. We are taking turns in two hour time slots. Being the rookie, I'm sure I'm going to get talked in to one of those dreaded windows between midnight and 4am. It's hard enough for me to run that long after a good night's sleep!

Hello everyone! I'm still getting out there and exercising and getting miles in. I completed C25K week 4 last night! My computer is all messed up though. Apparently my hard drive works, but it doesn't work in my laptop. I'm not sure exactly what's going on, but I'm dreading having to set up iTunes. AGAIN! I don't know if DBF has reinstalled Windows or what is going on, but I can only get online at work or using his laptop. I could probably use my old desktop and I may resort to that this weekend, but it is driving me crazy.

I do have Firefox on the desktop though and that is where the spreadsheet is bookmarked, so I will update as soon as I get on to a computer that works.

Thanks to all for the kind thoughts. It was tougher than I thought it would be yesterday, and a good friend of mine--and DVC owner--lost her job along with many others (about 15% or our organization).

Today I had early meetings (6 am) on top of late last night meetings, so I left work ealry and went for a swim. 1200 yds--never do manage to keep track of time. And given my swimming, that's probably good!

Kim You might want to check out a site i have frequented for strengthening/stretching. I know they have things to consider for IT band. Me, I work on hip strengthening (abductors) and stretching.

Steve, good luck with Relay for Life. Any chance you can talk them into doing two 1-hour time slots instead? Somehow that sounds much more doable, even in the wee hours of the morning.

Got back from our Relay meeting. There was a lot of demand for two 1-hour slots, mainly because of the heat last year. I guess it was really hard on the afternoon runners. I didn't even think about that.

My first hour will be at 7pm. They are going to ask us for second hours after they see how many volunteers they can get to run one hour first. It will be nice getting to go back and do a second hour after a good night's rest.

I got back too late to do my run tonight. I did 30 minutes of bike this morning and had another lunchtime walk.

Tomorrow is speed drills. I hope the weather holds up and I can go to the local high school track. Otherwise it's out to the old garage and on the treadmill.

Liz,:hug: one from me and one from DD14.

I hope everyone is well. I will be shortly. Anyone have any heat stroke recovery tips? My body does not seem to want much today, water, food, and especially heat. JFK airport was VERY warm today and I found myself lightheaded again. Pushing my fluids and Accelerade today but it seems to be passing right through. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

I do have to say that the course was not that bad and overall it was a great race, someone could have turned on the AC at any time though. I was not prepared for 87 degrees and neither were many others. I feel blessed that I finished and I send prayers to those who did not. Too many casualities on the course through no fault of the organizers. Just uncontrollable circumstances. My chip time was 6:28.03 but just being able to finish was a feat in itself. Many areas of the country experienced above average temperatures this weekend, which made many of our weekend distances uncomfortable. So this week's mixer topic, which starts here (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=31536832&postcount=766) on the 'Ohana thread:

What are your training/racing/recovery tips and strategies for hot-weather conditions?

Feel free to tell us how you alter your routines: when you go out, what gear you use or what you wear, how you hydrate and fuel differently, how to recognize danger signs, how you keep cool and/or recover from overheating, and when you decide to shorten/quit/take it inside.

As we all know, going out in the heat can be dangerous, so please help all of us by sharing your knowledge. :thumbsup2

Wow Lisa, please take care of yourself. I heard it was a tough day for a lot of people. You have shown incredible heart by getting back up and finishing. You are a real inspiration! I wish I had some advice for you but I've been spoiled in that I haven't run any long distances in warm weather yet.

AFM, I volunteered for Earth Day cleanup at one of our local state parks yesterday. I was an incredibly rewarding experience but I did something to my hurt right hamstring. It's really bothering me now. I did a lot of ivy pulling for four hours. I took it easy yesterday after that and did 6.4 easy miles on the exercise bike.

I went to the local high school track today and did 45 minutes (4.76 miles). I had a run-in with a dog while there. It was a friendly dog but I'm highly allergic to them. One thing I like about this track is there are signs at the entrance explicitly stating no dogs allowed. So some jerk shows up with his dog and immediately lets him off his leash (yes, we have a leash law which a lot of people ignore as well) and the dog proceeds to sprint off across the field at me. It was a little dog and he was friendly but being allergic I don't need some inconsiderate *&$%#%@'s dog jumping all over me.

He was eventually able to call the dog back but the dog pounced on me again when I approached to pass the guy. I lost it and blew up at the guy and said some very un-Disney-like things to him. He didn't even apologize but at least put the dog on a leash. I should have put it out of my mind but it threw off the rest of my run as I was so PO'd that I went well above a comfortable pace for me and ran out of gas. I cut my 1 hour run short and called it a night. I can't stand people sometimes!

Morning Goofs. See all back to normal this morning!! :goodvibes

Steve, Debra and Shan, thank you all!!

I guess we were some of the lucky few. There is a news report that a man dropped dead after the half. Poor man. Poor family. It gives everything a new perpective when something tragic like that happens. DH was crazy worried about me to begin with and that sure did not help his attitude toward marathons!

Me, I would do it again, in better conditions of course. But that is the one thing we cannot control. Darn Mother Nature....:scared:

I am off to the gym today. Part of me feels like a run and part of me does not so we will see who wins, good Lisa or evil Lisa. Yeah, I think we all know who wins don't we...:rolleyes1 DD has a practice tonight and their first game tomorrow. Back to the grind here, normal busy anyway! Searching for an awesome fare to VAB to try and convince DH that we should go, just for the weekend, to have fun with friends. Liz, Patrick, tag your it!! You both go and it will be easier to talk him into it!!!

Lisa Thank goodness you are recovering from your race on Saturday. I know I've been getting anxious about hearing from our WISH'ers who did CMM. Please take care of yourself and give yourself ample time to recover. And you're pretty amazing to already consider doing the race again.

I got in 4 miles yesterday--waited too long to run and it was hot so cut it from 6. Feel like a wuss compared to everyone else, but at least I got out there. Today was bike at the gym. My driveway spill from Saturday (must remember to unclip both feet!) resulted in a nice contusion on my butt, so it took a little adjustment on the seat to feel comfortable.

Hope everyone has a good Monday.

GOOFS!

Lisa,Patrick Liz Congrats on the safe finish to CMM!

Maura Spills on clip ins are common, I'm glad you got away with nothing more than a bruised ego and backside :)

Today I got in 2400 yards in 50 minutes in the pool...I'd been slacking on the swim workouts, so this one was a bit of a challenge. Just finished reviewing the workouts for this week...14 plus total hours, two a days for 6 days this week :faint:

Somebody remind me to drown my training partner!

Congrats everyone on CMM!! Can't wait to see pictures.

I signed up for a local 5K this Saturday and then found one closer to home. Oh well, the one I signed up for is for Habitat for Humanity so the $$ will go to a good cause.

Signing up for Race for the Taste and on the fence about the Tower of Terror since I want the extra medal. Anyone else?

Morning Goofs!

Like Lisa said, it was brutal! I wanted to PR but decided about mile 4 that between the hills and the heat if I pushed it, I was going to be sick. Not being something I wanted to do, so backed off. Saw way too many people being treated for heat and dehydration.

Was great to see all of you again!

Lisa - you did great considering first full in that heat. So proud of you and Patrick. :worship: Oh and he is good for Mickey in Jan. Knew he would after a day or so. ;):hug: For you and DD!

VAB is highly likely for us so tell DH you guys have to come!

Panda - thanks for hanging with me and throwing water on me when needed. Really did help.

Big HELLO to everyone and WTG for all who got out in the heat this weekend.

Good morning everyone!

Liz, I have already said that I would do another full. I don't think that was a fair assessment of the distance. For me to hate all fulls just because it was so hot in Nashville would not do it justice or myself justice either.

Suzanne, I wish I lived close enough to do both races! I think you should just so we can see a pic of the extra medal!!!!

Maura, at least you were in your driveway. I wait until I am at a busy intersection to do something smart like that! :rolleyes1

Mike, I still do not know how you fit the workouts in. Just marathon training did me in. The miles/exercise did not bother me, it was just the time it took to get them in. Being so out straight all the time I guess maybe I should not look at an Ironman...

I got to the gym yesterday and did a great upper body workout. I also did 3 miles on the elliptical. I really wanted to run but, darn it, all the TMs were taken...:confused3 The extra stretch that I get from the elliptical felt pretty good though. I am going to do a short easy run today just because I really feel like running and it is going to be in the mid-80s here today. I will, however, be wearing a hat as I checked my hairline this morning and part of it is STILL red! I thought my brain was fried and now I have proof!! :lmao: I will be updating the spreadsheet later today and get those double race miles on there for our total.

I hope everyone is having a great week! Keep up the good work Goofs!!! :cheer2:

Oh, I forgot to mention that I did see Susie (Escape) at CMM and she is alive and well. I did not get a chance to ask her what had happened to her but I can report a Susie sighting!!

Hi all,

This morning was speed intervals (cause I just couldn't bring myself to get into the pool.) Did 10 x 400 with 1:30 rest. After 1 interval, I was thinking "no way". The gym was humid. I made myself a deal-get to 5, then quit. But I started feeling a little better and stuck out all 10. Okay, so for rest I actually stopped running for part, but still-I did all my speedy 7:08 intervals. 4.8 miles/41 minutes.

Lisa You amaze me at getting out there and running so soon after your full. I know I would be taking the week off!

Suzanne Did you sign up for RFTT yet? I am all signed up, along with my niece and BIL.

Mike I've been meaning to ask, when you do your swim workouts, do you swim at constant pace--like a long run-- or do you do any drills/intervals?

Everyone else, have a good day.

Hi all!

Back from CMM and from holding my new baby cousin. Ok so he is my cousin's baby but I think that still makes him my cousin..... who cares?! He was 4 days old and adorable.

My race was pathetic. Mostly it was mental and it started before the race but the heat did not help. I never even bothered to check my time so it was a pleasnt surprise to find out that I did better than my guess.

Lisa - :worship::worship::worship: WOW!!!
I know people have complained about the heat at WDW races, but having run the last three I KNOW that CMM was hotter than any of those. And everyone I talked to said that the heat made the hills seem like mountains! I know that the same hills as last year seemed much steeper to me. I also know that I would have taken that turn at mile 11 and said "I'll run a full marathon another day."

I have already said that I would do another full. I don't think that was a fair assessment of the distance. For me to hate all fulls just because it was so hot in Nashville would not do it justice or myself justice either.

My thoughts exactly! If you could finish this race under those conditions, the next marathon will seem easy. (But the mental part of getting ready for the next one will be tougher.)

missed my 50 min run yesterday :headache: and got in 6 COLD, WET miles on the bike in 40 minutes.

Today is a 45 min swim, and an 1:05 ride.

Maura, to answer your question, there is a lot of pacing work.

For example today is;

2x 150 swim, 150 pull

750 swim at 70%, 1 min rest

750 pull, 1 min rest

4x50 1 length easy/ 1 length hard

4x50 all easy.

Okay that made me tired.......:lmao:

Morning everyone!! I got my mom home safe and sound yesterday. I also got to stop at the Whole Foods Market in Portland. What a treat!! I seriously could spend all day in the store. It takes me 3 stops at home to get all I did yesterday in one stop.

Today for me is a bike ride. DH's pickup is done at the garage and it will give us a way to get it home. I did some intervals on Tuesday but I am not ready to run physically yet. Now I have to figure out a way to ignore my brain!!

DD14 has a game tonight. She caught the entire game on Tuesday, had some spectacular saves and hit a ball to the fence which would have been a HR if it had not rolled under the mesh fencing. Another day. She is catching the first 2 innings tonight as the catcher had to miss practice yesterday and cannot start the game. After 2 innings, she will pitch. It is a good team and they need her speed. The starting pitcher is accurate but really slow...never a good thing. DS7 tried his hand at pitching last night too. Needs to take some lessons from his sissy. She pitched in little league too.

Pics are up from CMM at asiorders.com. You can see me under bib 19056. No laughing at the finishing photo. I gave it all and I think Cecilia will testify for me. There is a great pic of my family in there and one of Liz, Patrick and I before the start of the race. Funny thing is that there is 1 photo in my grouping with half of Patrick but 2 photos of both of us under his bib. Go figure. I must have been looking good...lol...not so much at the end of it.

Have a great day everyone!!

Missed my bike workout yesterday, and got in 6 slow awful miles this morning.

I have training today at work, tomorrow is a rest day, and all kinds of hours on Saturday and Sunday...I also have an Indian Guides campout with my 7 year old, so I will do 4 hours of training @ 0500 on Saturday, drive 3 hours to a Y campground in WI, hang out with him, sleep overnight up there, drive back 3 hours, and then another 3 hour workout on Sunday.

I might not be around much until Monday morning....

Great job staying consistent this month Goofs!

Maura, I am still waiting for Disney endurance to email me the cast member discount code. There used to be a seperate mail in form to fill out but they are now "going green" so its all online. Its probably only about $5 off registration but every little bit helps. I'll let you know as soon as I sign up.

I haven't gotten nearly enough exercise in this week. Between the packing and working extra hours to make up for the time I'll be away, I just haven't had the time, energy or desire to do much.

We'll be flying out tomorrow so I won't be updating the spreadsheet until the 21st at the earliest. We will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and my daughter's first Disney cruise.

I hope they hold the Castaway Cay 5K while we are there. I also plan to get out and do some miles around the Boardwalk and maybe Animal Kingdom Lodge where we'll be the first week.

Take care everyone and stay safe out there!

Steve, congrats on the anniversary and have fun!

Cecilia, sorry you had a tough time with the heat at CMM, too. Now I'm debating if I really want to run it next year... I guess you never know. ING has been freezing last two years, so who knows?!? :confused3

Suzanne, is that "going green" apply to the WDW full, too for the discounts? I know DVC uses the same form as cast members. I'm still debating on the race. I have given myself until June to decide.
Also, what is the general vibe at WDW regarding this swine flu? We were taking my parents in three weeks with the kids and I'm getting nervous. Youngest still sucks her thumb when she is tired or nervous, oldest keeps an inhaler with her for seasonal allergies and my Dad really has a time of it when he gets sick. He also seems to pick up everything. I seem to be the only one who is concerned, but I'm also the designated trip planner and I hate to say will probably be the one that has to make the call. Anyone have any thoughts? :confused3

I ran 3 miles today. Pace was around 11:30. It has been harder this time around for sure. I don't get it. Last time I was out three months, this time only 6 weeks and this surgery was not as involved. I'm really struggling. I know my pace is faster than last time I started back up. I keep trying to slow myself down, but it is hard cause I keep falling into my pace before surgery. I'm seriously thinking about switching over to my beginner program I have used twice before. It actually has more mileage in it, but it has walking breaks that build up to all running. Regardless, I still end up at the same place - running a 10K. It is my legs - they feel like limp noodles. It is really weird. I have been back running for four weeks now. Shouldn't it seem easier by now?

Take care Goofs! :grouphug:
