Crazy story. On the way to the fort last year it was a nice smooth ride (well, as smooth as you can get going down through Georgia... Hopefully the route is changing this year...)
We get there, set up, have a great weekend. Hook back up, head home. It was JERKY on the way home... We'd stop and we could feel the pop up jerking around. I asked DH if that was normal. He said yes. But for some reason we just weren't paying attention to it happening on the way down. And that it did... :confused3
We get home at midnight and go to sleep... The next day we're unhooking everything and DH comes in the house white as a ghost...
We rode all the way to the Fort and all the way back with the 1 7/8 ball on the hitch... The pop up should have been on the 2 inch ball...
:scared1:
How lucky were we? That could have been disastrous...
Amateur... lol. I still tease him about it. I'm just the ride along so I can do that since I had nothing to do with it. Bet he double checks this time!

You were very lucky. My boss forgot to switch balls when he was pulling our hydro jet it takes a 2 5/16" ball he left in the 2". He went over the rail road tracks at about 30 mph and lost the trailer. Did I mention it was only a couple months old and had a price tag of $40,000. Thank goodness no machine or human was really hurt.

I often forget to switch my balls as well. So far, so good.

There is nothing worse than a ball in your hitch that's too small.

I sometimes jiggle my balls around in my hand to make sure I have the right size!! :thumbsup2

You would think with all that jerking around that he would have realized his ball wasn't working right...

Perhaps that was the problem, he only had one ball! :confused3

I always keep a couple balls of different sizes handy.

You should always compare balls before use. Just remember though, bigger is not always better.

It's not the size that matters, it's what you do with them that counts.

I've been accused of having balls, but I've never found them.

Actually bigger would have been better in this case.

Sometimes I wonder how I get through the day without logging on to this place.
This thread reminds me of a 70's sitcom or maybe a George Carlin routine.

That one just sparked so many responses that they all jammed in the discharge chute and caused a melt-down. They are forming so fast I can't even finish one before the next one starts! :rotfl:
btw, I keep my balls in the garage so they are handy whenever I need them. I have them hanging right in front of the truck, so that I won't take off without one of them. (Don't even get me started on my hanging trunions).

I wanted to get a little trailer so I could go camping, and not in a tent.
But my Dad said no. He said it takes balls to tow a trailer on the highways.
And here I thought he was being sexist!

Actually, it only takes one ball to tow a trailer. Any more are just spares.

Depending on the trailer it may take a bigger ball then you have. Balls come in different sizes.

No, we are talking about balls. Some do have two, one big one for the trailer and one little bitty one for the sway bar. You should also check that they are clean and tight. It is also helpful to have a light coat of lube on them to make hitching up easier. But if you do its nice to have a cover for when you unhitch so you don’t get any on your legs.

This is all very good towing information. It makes you realize that those balls in your hitch no matter the size are very important and if you don't use them properly it could change your life and others. Safety first read the ball size.:teacher:

If I don't lube my balls, I get a lot of creaking from the back end.

You need to redistribute the weight on your balls so that you put more tension on the front end. That should help reduce the creaking from the back. :thumbsup2

You should keep your balls slightly lubricated, I always find it better for hitch'n up and the ride.

A spray can of lithium grease works well for that :rotfl:

If you're lubricating your balls frequently, you might need to get the super size can, though. You don't want to run out in the middle of a great weekend.

It's been said that it only takes two balls for a good game of pocket pool.

At least it sounds like the shank was stable...and of course we really should discuss drop or rise.
As for lube - we wrap ours with waxed paper, less messy that way.

I would think waxed paper would hurt the balls when it got crinkled. You might want to try saran wrap instead. ;)

Yup, lubed it up real good. 'course, it meant that I had to clean it off in front of all the other campers. But I distracted them, I had the 6 y/o run around naked so nobody would notice me. :lmao:

Remember, its important to be sure the ball fits snuggly where it rests, and the white stuff some folks use helps to keep it quiet. It dosn't hurt to feel the fit after connection to assure a good ride

Just remember, as your balls age and wear, there might some rust develop. You may have to get a new set of balls in order to have a good, solid fit. Keeping your balls in good shape is expensive, but worth every penny.
