CKC-Valley Forge, July 30 - August 1, 2009
Valley Forge Convention Center, King of Prussia, PA
Registration dates: 4/29/09 - 7/12/09
The site I bookmarked isn't working anymore. Seems there has been a change at CK.
This is the new site: http://www.scrapandpapercorner.com/events/ckc/valley_forge/classroom.html
Pasadena is right before us, and seems to be working, so hopefully Valley Forge will come online soon.

Okay a newbie here... I have been CM scrapbooking for years 10plus and just recently getting into ACmoore and Mikes supplies and cricut. (now that I have more time and the girls are older)
So, I just want to go and see stuff, can't take any classes since my DDs are too young. (I heard there are some make and takes) Would it be a waste of time to go? It is only 2 hours away and nothing really good here shop wise that I know of.
Can you buy a bunch of stuff on the floor there or is it just displays? I figure if I bring a ton of $ it would find someplace to be spent and hopefully learn a ton of ideas.:confused3
Anyone going from South Central PA?

Oh, you will be able to spend your $$$. The classes mostly promote the products on the vendor floor anyway. They have make it take its, samples to see, loads of machines, discount ribbons, a whole brad/eyelet dealer...
OMG...really not a prob spending all your money! :lmao:

PaulaSue - depending on the age of your DD, they may be able to come into the classroom with you. A few years ago I took my then 8 year old DD to CKC and sat at the end of the table and she sat beside me and helped me with the class. The instructors had no problem with it and actually ended up having her help out. Of course, she's been coming to CKC's & Expo's since she was 4.
This year I'm taking my 9 year old DD and we'll be doing a weekend out of it. My 11 year old is staying home with Dad for some Dad/DD bonding time!

I would LOVE that but with 3 DD (ages, 10,8 and 6 at the time) I think that would be pushing it.:goodvibes

I called yesterday to the Radisson for another room, and had a huge problem. They had changed my original ressie, and totally messed things up.
If you have a confirmed ressie to the Scanticon/Radisson you might want to call and see what they have in their computer system. I was able to get what I needed, but I'll be calling back every week just to make sure they didn't change things again. I don't know what they are thinking confirming double rooms, and then changing them to king sized rooms. I love my friends, but I can't see the 3 of us in a king....just a bit too cozy for us :rotfl2:

I will do a spreadsheet for all attendees again after registration - just pm me if you want to be included.
And do you want to attend the 3rd annual 'Meat Meet'?
I've nailed down my schedule for Saturday as Megan will be coming with me. Spoiled brat!
I'm still working out Friday - I am thinking of booking extras (marked w/**) and just picking up the class kits. My plan is to travel much lighter this year and just work on the stuff I get during the day at the crop Friday night.

These are the classes that I'm hoping to get in:
Friday
8:30-9:30 - All Creatures Great and Small (may have to get the kit if I don't get there in time :lmao:)
9:50-10:50 - In the Doghouse III
3:10-5:10 - Album Enhancing Techniques-I love the classes that SEI has taught at CKU's so I'm hoping this one will be a good one.
Saturday
9:50-10:50 - 2009 Latest & Greated with Basic Grey (I've heard this is a great class)
11:10-12:10 - Paradise Found
Still trying to decide whether I want to take "A Taste of Scraptique Part Deux" - did anyone take this last year? and if they did - how was it?
I'm leaving plenty of time for my DD and I to do some of the make & takes. I'm going to crop in my room since I'll have my DD and she's only 9 and she would rather crop while watching TV :rotfl:

I always take this class - I love Basic Grey. They finally moved i to the ballroom last year because soooo many people go. It's a huge class and numerous session. The layouts are always great but it does move quickly. I need to search for my class reviews I did here so you can see last years.
Still trying to decide whether I want to take "A Taste of Scraptique Part Deux" - did anyone take this last year? and if they did - how was it?
I haven't taken it before but I am this year because they use my favorite manufacturer's - I love Fancy Pants, Prima & Kaiser. I hope it's good!

So tell a newbie what to expect when I go...
If I drive there and not spend the night, where to park? Approx cost a day?
If I spend the night is the hotel right there they are ad for the 115 a night? (So could I park at the hotel and walk to the events?)
Anything else in the area worth doing while there? It has been 15 years since I nannied in Philly and all I remember in the area is Ikea and the big mall.:rotfl:
I read another post about the projects and I am assuming packing a lunch/snacks is okay there?
Also what is the dress code for Disers there? I heard/read Disers had balloons and totes marked with mickys but what is the plan for this year? I have a cricut which is dying to be broken in.:rotfl2:

There is tons of parking at the convention center - no charge - but if you aren't there first thing you will have quite a walk.

I don't know the pricing but the hotels are attached to the convention center - you don't need to go outside to get from the convention rooms to your hotel room.
Anything else in the area worth doing while there? It has been 15 years since I nannied in Philly and all I remember in the area is Ikea and the big mall.:rotfl: The malls is even bigger now, lol. And you will be right next to Valley Forge park if you're interested in history - it's a nice place to walk around but too hot for me at the end of July/beginning of August.
I read another post about the projects and I am assuming packing a lunch/snacks is okay there? Yes, you can pack!

Here is what I like
Thurs night crop
Friday
830 --taste of scraptique deux
1110 -- boy chipboard
1230 --digital SLR photo
150 -- disney lickety split
310 - come full circle
430 - photos first
Friday night crop
Saturday
950 basic grey
1110 - sketchabilities
1230 -- fast & furious with Lickety Split
150 - Chipboard Callendar wall hanging
I have never been to the convention -- babysitting gets me every year. Since DH will be away, I know it will be a problem again. SO this is what I think I would like, but it is not very likely.
I haven't left much time for shopping.....what's better: the classes or the shopping?

I went to the convention last year and bought a bunch of supplies (which I'd like to finally put to use ). I was thinking of registering for some classes. Many of them say they are fast-paced (even the beginner ones). Will I be totally lost? I've scrapped 2 pages in my entire life, so I'm definitely a newbie (with a fortune in supplies).
Also, has anyone taken the card-making classes? There were many listed. Which ones were worth taking?
Thanks for any advice.
Terri

There are some bargains and it's nice to be able to see some products in person. But I spend most of my $'s on the classes. The retail value of the supplies is more than the class cost and you can learn something new! That's why I will even register for some classes and just pick up the kit and leave (I do that for ones I know supply good instrustions).
While the classes are fast paced, I don't think they are overwhelming. Get to the class as soon as they are letting people in and sit toward the front (if you have a problem you'll be close to the instructor), have the supplies you need for the class organized and ready and you should be fine.
I haven't taken any card classes but I think ddavis has. I had the 7 Minute Cards class by Boxer Scrapbooks on my short list but it didn't make the final cut, lol. I know Boxer has a great reputation for their classes.

Marlynn, as usual, you are the best...posting the floor plan, and making the spread sheets are soooo helpful! Thank you!!
Yes, the classes are fast pased, but if you know how to work your tools you will be fine. And the biggest thing I can stress to a newbie, is not to stress! The classes I've taken have been really easy to catch up on missed stuff at home, or at the crop that night. Just know how to work everything, and there is lots of time before to play with stuff. I've taken card classes before, and have gotten a few really good ideas from them, which I used for card swaps on the DIS.
As for rooms, if you want one, better call and reserve now. You can always cancel, but my experience has been that they book early.
Marlynn, I would love a DIS Meet again!! Do you want to do the Meat Meet, or would a pizza party or something like that be better? We could get delivery, and have a bring beverages, and desserts kind of thing. Just a thought... But, there are 6 just in my group of friends going...

Having never been to this convention, should I load up on Friday classes and hope that the vendors during the crops will be enough shopping? Or classes in the morning and leave the afternoon free for shopping on Friday?
There are 2 classes at 830am I am interested in -- Scraptique and the calendar wall hanging -- any recommendations? It looks like the scraptique is class is the regular price of the kit, the calendar class is $10 less than buying the kit on-line.

2 weeks and we will be there!! What is everyone bringing to the crop? Last year I had swap stuff, but didn't join any swaps this year... I'm thinking maybe Christmas cards? CJ pages? 365 stuff?
I need to get a new rolling tote, my old one broke over the winter...

is there going to be a DIS Meet at the CKU?
I'm not going to any of the crops since I'm taking my 9 yo DD and she just doesn't have the attention span to stay through a whole crop but I am staying onsite.

The last few years we have had a meet at lunch on Friday...Marlynn's Meat Meet. But I haven't seen her here in a bit, so not sure :confused3
Last year we had a table at the crop on Friday night with balloons, and all DISers were welcome to join... Anyone was to do that again this year?
I'll have my LGMHs on everything, and be wearing my big Mickey Icon earrings...if you see a big girl with LGMHs, that's me...PLEASE say "HI!" :teeth:

This will be my 4th year at CK and it never ceases to amaze me how many people bring food with them and eat in their rooms. But looking at my class schedules/crops there really is so little time to eat and I always feel there are so few choices (without leaving the hotel). So now I'm thinking it may be easier to bring food and eat in our room.
Has anyone done this before? If so, what kind of food did you bring?
ddavis860
07-19-2009, 04:46 PM
Yes, we brought food last year, and are planning to do it this year too. It worked so well for us... Breakfast was bagels and cream cheese. Lunch was Marlyn's Meat Meet on Friday, and snacky stuff on Saturday... Dinner the first night was subs from a home sub shop, and the next night was meatball sammies...
My group of friends are meeting on Thursday to hammer out a menu for this year...We are a bigger group this time, 6 of us, so it will be interesting what we can come up with...
I agree, the restaurants are very limited at the venue, and if you are short on time, it really stinks if you have bad service... Plus we saved a bunch of $$$ and were able to spend more at the vendor faire :teeth:

Yes, we brought food last year, and are planning to do it this year too.
How do you keep it all cold? Do you bring coolers and fill them with ice? I have seen some people pulling coolers through the hallways and always wondered if the hotel gave them any problems. I may just have to limit my clothes and pack a cooler with some lunchmeat and pasta salad. I have a small hot pot I could use to heat up some roast beef and gravy. May have to drag my Keurig with me, too. I'm always craving a good cup of coffee when I'm there and haven't been able to find one.
Last year someone at our Saturday night crop table called and had a pizza delivered. (All I could think about was Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.)

Micki, I brought a cooler to ckc last year at the Marriott - the bellman loaded it on the cart with all the luggage and never blinked an eye. Ate out of that thing all weekend and darn glad I had it. I always pack a dry box too, with coffee, filters, bagels, crackers, napkins, plates, s&p, etc. If it's a hotel chain where I know they use somekind of flakey coffee maker (Sheraton comes to mind), then I pack the coffee pot too. Of course that only works if you drive, not fly.

Thanks, Linda. I think this just might work for us. It's only two of us this year but we have opposite classes and there really is such little time to find something to eat. I've never been happy with the quick lunch down on the floor and the restaurants are just okay. I would be much happier munching on a bagel with my own coffee. And it will be easy to pack since we'll be driving (we're only an hour away.)
Thanks, again!

Last year we had balloons with a big LGMH hanging from them for the center of the table... I was planning on doing that again for Friday night, and someone can take them for Saturday night as I'm not going to that one ...
As for the food, we were at the Scanticon last year, and they have a fridge...but I also had the coolers, mine and my friend's. I took my coffee thermos too, and filled it from the little pot in the room the night before, so we could all get our fix first thing... I think it was 2 or 3 pots full...
Last year DH got me a big rolling cooler on wheels, so I'll be using that this time...This year EVERYTHING will be on wheels, because with all the people coming in, finding someone to bellhop can be a challenge...

I can't believe we never thought of bringing food before - and as I said in an earlier post, this is our 4th year. I've always seen groups of people with crockpots and coolers and just assumed they had some formal program going on with the convention. It was only last year that I caught a glimpse into someone's room and saw all the coolers that I put 2 and 2 together. Now I'm excited because the food issue was the one thing I truly disliked about the convention and by the time I get home on Sunday (from Thursday), I'm starved. So now we can plan some food and since it's only 2 of us, one cooler should do fine including food/drinks. I will definitely be bringing my Keurig - a good cup of coffee to start my scrap day is definitely the way to go!
Thanks everyone!

Oh yeah! I took my crockpot too last year...meatball sammies... that was a good one...put it on low before my first class...nice and hot for dinner...

Hello Ladies!
I have been reading your thread and have a few questions for you all.
Due to work scheduling I had never been able to attend CKC before last year and even then all I did was walk the floor. A bit overwhelming, but fun!
I noticed that many of you signed up for the Friday night crop but not the Sat night. Why? Are you too axhausted by that time? I signed up for Sat night. I heard while waiting in many lines last year several people say that by Sat Night the vendors are having blow out sales because they dont want to have to pack everything up, there's 2 for 1s and the like.
True or false?
Should I have signed up for Friday instead of Sat?
I am taking 3 classes with time in between for Make and Takes.
I plan on bringing DD up for awhile so that she can experience it too.
I didnt want to overdo too much first time out.
And consider myself lucky because the venue is only 15 minutes away!
Any comments or advise would be great!
Thanks!

Did both 2yrs ago, and we liked the Friday night crop better...felt the Saturday one was quieter, same goody bag...not worth the cost... So this year we are doing the Thursday day crop, the Friday night one, then cropping in the room on Saturday night...
As for the vendors coming in and selling, yes it happens both nights... Not sure if Sat is better...maybe someone else did better than I did, as I went running and even though I was standing with $$ out, girl in front of me says she will take the rest...sold...and I was :headache:

I did the Saturday night crop at CK Hartford last year (because I needed to stay over the night anyway) and enjoyed it - Sat with 2 strangers and 1 woman I met in a couple classes, and we had fun - the "MC" with her stupid contests was the most annoying thing. I did not take anything of my own to scrap, but finished up several class projects. It was a nice, low key, wind-down time.

I am going on Friday for the shopping only since our family reunion is that weekend again in the Poconos. I managed to convince my son to go with my husband and the dogs on Thursday so I can go through alone at least. Not much to spend till I start the new job in a few weeks but I don't want to miss it.
Last two years there was a coupon sheet that was emailed out in advance and I can't find it again (someone was nice enough to email to me last year). Show specials with coupon. Does anyone have this that they could email me? If so please PM me.
Where and what is the meat meet? I might be able to do that....:) Who is going?

We have had Marlynn's Meat Meet the last couple of years where the sofas and chairs are in the center hallway upstairs at the Scanticon... It's where the general classrooms are (I Think).

Bringing either beverages or a dessert would be great. If you bring a beverage - please bring disposable cups, if not single serving.
I've been swamped at work so I won't have as much time as I have in the past to get things together before hand. I will bring meats, cheeses, breads & condiments, macaroni & potato salad, and my famous brownies (will make extra for the crop too)! And plates, napkins, and utensils.

I go to Valley Forge every year, but went to Hartford with DN and BFF last year. Valley Forge is huge! There was easily 25% fewer vendors in Hartford, and fewer classes too. I would have considered going back to Hartford, but they aren't having it this year.

I don't think anyone from the group I went with to CKC is going to the Quick Quotes weekend. And the class I took, Paradise Found, I was disappointed in the colors. I didn't like the palm tree being a barn red...or the waves being the same color...I think they could have picked a dark teal, and the colors would have been great... So needless to say, I didn't finish in class, and will get some Bazzill to finish the projects.
That being said, I'm almost afraid to spend that much, and then not like the classes...KWIM? Anyone love the Quick Quotes classes they took? Maybe mine was the exception?

I have liked some of the classes projects- I generally pick up some good information in velum 911- or whatever they call it in a given year. If you want to see the projects they are on the website- they use a little too much orange and lime green overall in many projects for me.

I didn't like the orange much either so what I did was use the other side and the palm tree I basically added some Glimmer Mist to the it and it made it much better. I took of the "waves" and did some tearing on some of the left-over paper and use that instead. Basically, made it my own :rotfl:
On another note - sorry that Megan & I missed the lunch. I ended up throwing the key lime tarts out so I wouldn't eat them all :) I guess we were in the wrong place :(
