No offense, but I'm pretty sure it's a lost cause... As much as many of us would like to see it back, there were safety issues that couldn't be addressed to today's (admittedly litigation-paranoid) safety standards. I understand that the maintenance alone made it ridiculously cost-prohibitive. Plus it took up a lot of space. So I'm thinking that it might never be really practical for the DL suits to try to bring it back. Unfortunately. :sad1:

Thsi subject has been discussed on the internet until it is a dead matter.
!. The rides are under grandfather clauses until they have major renovations or are replaced. Thus the new people mover would be built by the codes of 2010.
2. The tunnels and interior stuff are load bearing walls which would require completely remodeling Buzz, Space Mountain, Star Traders, Star Tours and other sites.
3. The ride cannot run as the old days because of legalities including Disney lawyers, insurance companies, and various government agencies. These rules and laws would require that people could not stick things out of the ride which would mean enclosing each car with plexiglass that has air holes for example.
6. In summation we all want the ride back but know that the money is better of making new rides, renovating kitchens, making allergen free bakeries and kitchens, etc. You are not going to get anywhere with Disney with a petition because Disney listens to the government and its lawyers who have said no. "manned up" what does that mean? It sounds like you are goading us into signing but hun you would have a better chance getting me to eat a cheese omellette.

To add to the previous comments - that track was already refitted and possible already stripped of the "Test Track technology" to make Rocket Rods. The original mechanics for the People Mover is long gone. Reinstalling is a costly project - like building a completely new attraction. Something not in the budget while the DCA refurb is going on.
Many of the tunnels are still there - to potentially be used for other variations of a track ride. Many things have been bantered about - enclosed Pods like in the Incredibles, etc.
Who knows what the will decide. After all - look how long it took to get the submarines back in order! :thumbsup2

I will concur that it took over a decade to get the subs back on line, but they did it. The Peoplemover would have to be massivly modified from its previous state, but it could be done. Its either that or tear down the track, I'm sick of looking at it.

Fair enough let them be built to said codes, at least there would be something moving on the tracks. If they have to be enclosed "pods", do it just remember to have some sort of AC on them unlike the new monorails. Who forgot that one?

Ok, so you are telling me that they are already load bearing walls. Why would they have to be changed? Unless of course, the track were to get wider or taller.

As far as "manning up", It gets old because I see at least 2x a week people on this board complaining or whining about how much they miss the Peoplemover. It would take only a few seconds to sign the petition and possibly get the ball rolling....

What? - confused - Are you trying to say that everyone who signs a non-Disney-inspired petition to bring back an antiquated attraction is going to get their name on a plaque by Disney, who has no involvement whatsoever with said petition?

This may be the most ludicrous unintentionally (I hope!) hilarious statement I've ever seen on this messageboard. Who exactly is going to pay for the plaques? Disney? Who is going to affix them to the support? Disney? I can just imagine a bunch of attraction-terrorists jumping over the fences in the middle of the night to mount plaques to the supports.
Good grief.
Re: internet petitions. Here's an interesting article about them. http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/internet.asp

Ok, so you are telling me that they are already load bearing walls. Why would they have to be changed? Unless of course, the track were to get wider or taller.
To have the peoplemover as it was when it first opened they would either have to make the tunnels wider or enclose the people mover. Thus I stated that the walls are weight bearing because I was looking at all options such as widening tunnels as well as redesigning the ride vehicles which are the two best solutions for getting a ride on that track let alone the original people mover.
The ride cannot run as the old days because of legalities including Disney lawyers, insurance companies, and various government agencies. These rules and laws would require that people could not stick things out of the ride which would mean enclosing each car with plexiglass that has air holes for example.
Wouldn't this fall under the "2010 codes" issue?
It is something different from codes. There is the ADA for example and then the insurance agencies will want a safe ride and the Disney lawyers will want a lawsuit free ride if possible and there are government agencies. Nowadays there is air pollution, soil pollution, runoff and a lot more. This is California which has some tough pollution regulations and there are the newer earthquake codes.
6. I am saying that there are hurdles for any ride especially one on the peoplemover track. This is common knowledge and Disney is known for its legal deparment. The ride was shut down to renovate the park and was replaced by corporate agents of Disney. They wanted a thrill ride and thus was the Rocket Rods that turns a slow moving boring ride into one that people spent hours and had to climb a lot of stairs to get to just for a few minutes on that ride.
Manning up is silly as we whine and grip together as we miss things but do you thing they will return the flying saucers, the Pirate Ship restaurant, the skyway, the keel boats, Bear Country Jamboree, Tom Sawyer Island as it once was, the Indian Village, Tahitian Terrace, America Sings, Carrousel of Progress, History of Fashion, America the Beautiful and Fantasyland Theater? We miss things but cannot bring them back.

I know that there are building codes, engineering issues, etc that each ride faces. I do know that Disney has good sized legal department. During what park renovation are you speaking of?
Slow it was, boring that's debatable. It started to go downhill when the Peoplemover was removed, it had nice handy moving walkways leading up to the cars. Rocket Rods did suck in regards to the stairs....
By "grip" do you mean gripe? They are returning the flying saucers, its going to be in DCA. I really "thing" so. As for the rest I don't care. At least with the other attractions that you mentioned they are using the facilities that the old attractions once were in or inhabited. IE, it is not wasted space nor an eyesore as the Peoplemover track is.

Oy I got a headache now and am stopping this nonsense here and now. You are not good at quotes for one thing. Keel boats, motor boats and tahitian terrace were not replace with equal things. You asked and you got an answer why I could not reply. They are never bringing back the flying saucers because it is a slow loader and the technology was a problem like people dropping stuff onto the vents or what ever.
I am not going to debate over this issue. I stated common facts and then answered. There is nothing more to be said.

Maybe they will reopen the People Mover to coincide with the Tron 2.0 movie coming out next year. I really hope they don't since that ride was the slowest, most boring thing I'd ever been on and the Tron room was just weird. Not sure why the PM has achieved such cult status...

Tahitian Terrace, eventually became the Polynesian Review, later Aladdin's Oasis.
Keel Boats, at least there is one docked around the perimeter of the island, as a reminder of their tenure.
The motor boats, it eventually became a garden and smoking area.

Now, you want to talk about Small World additions.... yeah, I talked about those, and guess what? I signed those petitions - without a single push from anyone. If people cared, they'd take action. Now to deal with the nonsense.
If someone rips out you favourite burger stand and puts a parking lot you should be happy, right? WRONG, it is not the same thing. You just do not understand that THE flying saucers are not the same as riding in a tire. The keel boats is like having someone take your car from you and putting it on blocks in front of your house, not the same thing.

I signed, however I dont think the people mover will ever be back. I also stated in the comment section that it wasnt nessarily the people mover I want. I just want something new on an empty track. Walt never wanted his parks to be time capsules, but like with the subs something new would work there. I dont think Disney will let the empty track stay up there for ever, the lagoon is full again (even if nemo isnt that great) and I believe someday the track will have something too.

Regardless, the petition is up to 1939 signatures.... As for the two people who are not signing the petition, no loss.
And if you want to get into specifics on how a flying tire is different from a flying saucer minus the shape feel free.

Oh make it 3 people who won't sign because as much as I want to see something there and I do miss the PM it doesn't have any place in today's DL. :)

Hey Lakewood, Just an FYI here. Not sure if you have been there or not, but micechat is the place to go to rally the troops. That isn't to say that you can't try here, I just think that the culture on this board isn't the kind that you're looking for and you will probably get much more support (And more vocal) in that forum. We are much more laid back over here and more interested in talking about what is right rather than what isn't.
As for my opinion on the matter, I will say this:
I would love to see the PM tracks get some kind of use again (Personally, I think that either The Incredibles or WALL-E would make an outstanding theme for a new attraction up there) However, a petition didn't save WDW's Mr. Toad or prevent the recent changes to IASW so I don't believe that it will make a difference in this case. I'm sure WDI has a big star over those tracks in their wish lists so we'll see something someday up there.

Or 10s of 1000s of signatures on a petition to save VMK. :sad2:
...more interested in talking about what is right rather than what isn't.
Cheers to that!

P.S. I'd sign the petition if I cared. I signed countless iasw petitions. However, I really don't care what happens with the PM tracks. Sorry. They don't bother me, they don't interfere with my enjoyment of the Park, and there is plenty of other thhings to do at the Park for me to really be concerned with tracks of an attraction of the past.

You do realize that the site with that petition was created in July of 2006, right? That means that in 2 and a half years just shy of 2,000 people have cared enough to sign. The Disney company already sent a form letter to that site in September of 2006, and that's likely to be the only response they'll ever see. Heck, the Mr. Toad petition got media coverage and they never did anything about it.

I grew up with the People Mover - way back in the '70s I was riding in it. So for nostalgic reasons, I miss seeing the PeopleMover in DL and would like to see it again. My friends loved riding it in our teens and early 20's. And I definitely want something to be done with that track - I think that is a perfect area to put a ride that is Incredibles or Wall-E themed. As much as I personally miss the PeopleMover, I realize they would have to do something a little more progressive with that theme today, but not to the level of quasi-thrill ride like the Rocket Rods. They need the same idea as the People Mover, but just themed to a more current Disney film.
P.S. I hated riding in the old Skyway buckets because I didn't like dangling in a swaying bucket from a cable high above the cement, BUT I really miss seeing those buckets dotted along the landscape/skyscape of DL. I always liked how Disneyland made such creative use of the land, the water and the air for their rides.

The basis of the petition (from the site) reads:
To: Disneyland Resort
We, fans of Disneyland and of the Peoplemover, ask the Walt Disney Company
and the Disneyland Resort to bring back the Peoplemover to Tomorrowland.
The Peoplemover adds much needed life to Tomorrowland. It brings motion and
activity to the land of the future. Currently, Tomorrowland is lacking in
energy that the Peoplemover once brought; with an unused track overhead the
land feels stagnant.
The Peoplemover was a family friendly attraction and, at moderate speeds,
everyone could ride it. It was a leisurely ride over Tomorrowland offering
views that could not be experienced elsewhere in the park.
The Peoplemover would once again breathe new life into Tomorrowland. And
that is why we ask that Disneyland please bring back the Peoplemover.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

We're looking at this thread out of curiosity. The peoplemover is a part of my fond memories as a kid, and they were part of the Tommorowland look that I prefer.
But I didn't care much for actually riding it. The logical thing would be to bring back the Rocket Rods and make it as originally planned. They had lost funding during producing it and that was the problem. I would've had banks and therefore wouldn't need to slow down before turns.

Umm, it was a joke Lakewood, because I wasn't born then....and my parents were really young. You know haha funny funny.....sheesh......
Usually people only say that when they are familiar with the year, for instance when someone says 1988 was a good year I say it was because my oldest DD was born then, the same for my other kids, etc etc....... :confused3

I'm not trying to be mean or rude, but according to Disney, Luigi's Flying Tires is going to be like the Flying Saucers.
I think changing the original attractions into new and improved ones is pretty cool, but I'm afraid it's going to be another "Flik's Fun Fair" :scared1:
Okay, am I the only one here that just finds this post hilarious every time I read it?! :rotfl: Thank you darph nader! I needed that laugh, again and again each time I read it!
Phew! I got it out. I feel better now,

No, that was hillarious, I think it was brilliant actually.
OT, but who were you on VMK??
I think I know you, I was PrincessSofia.
I just want the tracks to be used... Heck, make the whole track a planter for all I care, or an aqueduct. Just use the dang thing.
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! If there were like plants or flowers up there... That'd be pretty cool.
You're such a tease!!!!!
Like Teki said, I don't necessarily want the PM back, but I don't like the empty tracks. I hope they do come up with something to go there.
I agree.

I agree with your WALL-E and Incredibles statement.
The PM would bring back nostalgia, like the subs did. When attractions are recreated into something fitting with this time period, like the loved WALL-E, both generations would be able to enjoy it. The older set for the slight nostalgia, but still enjoying the new storyline and the younger set for bringing out their favorite characters. I think it would really be something for families if stuff like this happened. It wouldn't just be a ride to appease the kids, it would be history as well.
Just my 2 cents!

I have to agree....Disney knows what they are doing.
