View Full Version : Let The Storm Season Begin

Well, the family just ate supper in my basement office. Our first full tornado warning of the season. Starting a bit early this year. The cell took a turn northward and missed our immediate area, though I'll have to check on Mom & Dad later.

I guess it's at least better than winter storms, maybe.

I do remember those. That's the worst we've had in the Decatur area. It was 74 I believe. They had a bad one in Huntsville in December a few years ago. We have 2 tornado seasons here. Don't you love it?

I used to think we had it bad up here with Hurricane season, but seeing and hearing about all of our friends that live in tornado ally, hurricanes seem like a walk in the park. Stay safe and here's hoping for a an "easy" season......:grouphug:

The funny thing is that my wife (born and raised in the Midwest) thinks that the hurricanes are the worst thing she has ever heard about. I've lived in both areas, and I'd prefer hurricane season.

Last year was not a good one around here. Several storms hit this area pretty hard, some in the middle of the night when the sirens are harder to hear. A storm cell sparked a tornado at a nearby Boy Scout camp, catching several scout groups out camping in the rough. 4 Scouts died when the main camp area took a direct hit. Only a few people saw it coming, and they were out of the reach of sirens in the adjacent town, so little to no warning.

The season lasted well into July, much longer than usual. When we bought the TT in September we had only been out camping twice all summer. While I enjoy lying in the tent listening to the rain, thunder/lightning and high winds just don't make a romantic setting. By the time it had settled down it was too hot to enjoy the tent.

I'm hoping for more time out this year. Let it rain, even storm. As long as the sirens aren't blowing I'll ride it out just fine. Of course, now I have a new dimension of worry. The other night we sat in my office eating supper, and I was trying not to think about the TT, which was sitting in an outdoor storage lot just a few miles west of the line of storm cells. :scared1:

thanks Denise! i was just coming on here to say the same for you guys, as it looks like it got pretty bad out your way. The sirens here in Franklin went off at least 3 times over the past 2 hours, but it has cleared now. We were lucky, but many in surrounding areas were not according to the news. I hope you guys are safe, and same for TnBob down in Maury County.

Seems to be done here now. DS is working 1/2 mile from our house, I can't get thru on phone since all circuits are busy, I'm sure he's ok since I didn't hear anything here. Frank is in Smyrna working, can't reach him either, but I haven't heard of tornados there. Gonna be hard to get home for him tho, if he takes any route he's gonna hit damage from the estimated 6 tornados that hit Murfreesboro. Neighbors DD was working at Taco Bell, they put the employees in the walk-in, when she came out she said debris was everywhere, this is I-24 and Hwy 96 area. I sure hope no one was hurt or killed, living here 26 years we know alot of people.

We made it! It was rough for a while, worst part was that we put new hardwood in the Kitchen and stained it yesterday so we are staying in the camper for a couple days while the fumes disapate. We had the wind and huge hail for a while but came through ok, thanks for the good thoughts. The people in Murfreesboro got hit hard, the news pictures showed big tornados and one house pushed right off its foundation. The Nationwide race is at the Nashville superspeedway this week and they got a lot of trouble right near there. I'm glad you made out ok, Dave, there was one said to be headed your way about an hour ago. Thank you all again for the concern.

It seems to be tracking just west of here now, we have clouds and some off and on wind. The news just showed a house here in Maury county where something flew right through the wall, it made about an 8 inch round hole right through the wall into a bedroom. Hopefully everyone is still safe.

Man....it's either too much or not enough.

We are into our 3rd year of drought conditions in Central Florida. It's as if the storm fronts hit I-10 and quit going south. From Jan 1 to April 1 this year, we're about 7" below normal rainfall. In 2008, we were about 35-40" below normal rainfall. The reservoir that feeds the City of Tampa is virtually empty & the city is trying to enact some pretty stringent water usage laws.

So....if you're getting too much rain in your area, send it to Florida please! :thumbsup2

We're ok. We had several tornado warnings, but it was all for NW Decatur. We live in the farthest SE corner. We didn't even get hail here. We did have some high winds, hard rain and lots of thunder and lightening.

I just got off the phone with my neighbor who works for an ambulance service, he was right in the middle of the first one that dropped into Murfreesboro. He said there was 2 deaths, a woman and a child, and he had taken one from a car that was in very bad shape. He said that at first his ambulance was full with a mother and kids who had been beaten around pretty badly but were ok otherwise. Its pretty well tore up along some paths and lets hope the toll doesn't rise with all the searches going on.

They're working their way through here now. East of town is getting it. We've had some nasty stuff come through Paulding - weather radio went off and it said "local law enforcement has spotted a tornado just east of Aragon that is headed east" - we live 5 miles due east of Aragon. It's been a scary evening - but I think they're done on this side of town anyway.

That's the problem in TN...very few of us have basements. That was a real shock when I first moved here from Buffalo. I asked my wife "where the heck do I put all my crap?". That's when I learned the location of our county dump.

But seriously, there have been times during storms I have wished I had a basement or storm shelter. Somehow, just going into an interior closet doesn't seem to provide much safety if your house is completely destroyed.

What happened in Murfreesboro was awful! Where it hit was about 1/2 mile from my old house. Several of my friend's and their parents homes have been completely destroyed! Very scary stuff. Good think about Florida == hurricanes have long warnings!
