What should I collect?

ok, went to WDW xmas 08 and I'm hooked. I didn't buy myself anything there, I couldn't decide what I wanted to become a collector of! Now I just troll around on ebay and such looking for something tangible to have in memory of WDW!

I don't really want to do pins, I'm a practical sort, I don't like things you have to dust, and I like things that don't cost a lot. I would like to buy myself some stuff from each park next visit tho! Maybe like kitchen related things?

What do you collect? Any ideas for me?:idea:

Welcome to The Dis (from a former Kansan). There are quite a few cool kitchen things to collect, and there's the Disney Pantry store at DTD with lots of items.

I don't know that anyone does this, but if you're looking for inexpensive items how about Disney pens(not pins)? They are cheap, there a lots of them, and you can use them.

DW is a scrapbooker and buys lots of Disney stickers to assemble books of our trips. Again, this is something that you can enjoy for years to come and your family will appreciate it.:earsboy:

I'm a magnet collector, not just Disney but all kinds. I pick them up every time we go on a trip or just if I see something I like. They aren't expensive and don't take up much room. :goodvibes

I collect shot glasses - not just from Disney, but everywhere we travel. I have some really great ones - and they're nice, inexpensive reminders of our travels! (They're displayed in my kitchen).

I also got addicted to pins on our last trip - I'm hooked...

hanutedmansionmomma- Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you need to ask people what to collect, don't collect anything!

Don't rush into starting a collection, wait until some thing, or a category of things, fascinates you or really makes you happy, or brings back some happy memories.

I'm afraid if you begin a collection just for the sake of collecting, you'll be doing nothing more than building inventory for a future yard sale.

lol lizard! that's very true...although like I mentioned, i DO want some Disney to look at each day, just didn't want to do the traditional spoons, etc. I do like the shotglass idea, we could use them for soft boiled eggs. Or shots - ha! Magnets are a great idea too. In my classroom 3 of the walls are magnetic! I think I will stick with things I can put in the kitchen. I'm there so darn much anyways...

How about antenna toppers? I have one for each season/holiday, and then just a few 'plain' ones. I rotate them throughout the year. The ones that aren't in use sit on top of pencils in a vase on my kitchen counter.......an antenna topper bouquet.

Next trip be sure to visit the kitchen shop at DTD. DW can always find something there- that's why I try to keep her out of there!

pressed pennies are one of the cheapest and most fun items to collect in the parks (and resorts) in my opinion. it almost becomes like a little adventure because certain pressed pennies can only be found at certain areas in wdw, and the best part is that each one only costs 51 cents! :cool1:

Pressed pennies are really cool my friend and i got a bunch the last time we were at wdw i cant wait for our next trip to get more! Im pretty sure you could figure out something to make outta them (mine are a boarder for my disney pins but ya) GL! :D And i just saw some disney plates for sale on the disneyshopping website you can check there too!

The pressed pennies are fun to collect. Here at Disneyland, they had a set of 50 for the 50th anniversary and I bought the special 50th book and put them all in order, an unsmashed penny in the spots where I still had to get one. They had a listing on their site of where they all were, and it was fun. And I felt so accomplished once I had them all.

I was also going to suggest the Disney collector packs, but they're starting to get expensive. I think they're $5.50 or $6 now. And they keep adding new series, so it's definitely starting to run into money.

Also, pick a character or a movie and go with things that have to do with that. Then you get a variety, but still a theme.

Over the years the biggest mistake I've made in collecting is not trusting my instincts. Know what you want to collect and decide what works for you.

And by all means, do not be a completist. That will usually lead to a lot of money spent on items that wind up losing meaning over the years. Decide how you want to remind yourself of Disney and go from there.

I hate dusting things too ,I do collect pins ( said for DS but ,ahem I think they are for me) I also scrapbook.

One thing I've always collected for years is Ornaments.Ornaments from everywhere I have ever been. Downtown Disney has Disney's Days of Christmas which is full of ornaments.Last year for our first trip I picked a castle ornament because it was one of our favorite things on our first visit. Now every year I decorate our tree I will remember our first time at Disney.No fuss or mess year round ,just special memories at Christmas.

Also if you don't find an ornament you like at Disney's Days of Christmas,I don't see how you couldn't though, you can make an ornament out of alot of things like pvc figures or whatever.

Well I too am from Kansas and am looking for something to collect. We just got back from our first WDW trip a few days ago and I'm hooked. I am hoping to find some miniature characters or figurines of some kind......that don't look so female-ish. I am new to all the disney merchandise so if anyone can help, please do.

How about post cards? I get one from every place I visit. They are always there for me to look back on but don't take up alot of space. I have them in a binder.

One of my problems was getting off each ride (I did love every ride) and landing in a gift shop. I was wanting to buy something, but never did! I think that's where the wanting a specific item came from. Then maybe I wouldn't be overwhelmed.

My fav ride was haunted mansion, by far. I did look online for a replica or something, like a little village type house. No luck...

I am definietly drawn to kitchen thingys. I think anything I can use like that will be my collecting!

Now I just need to GO BACK! Miss it terribly...:sad2:

Yeah, I am totally having DW withdrawal. I think collecting stuff can hold me over until my family can get back in a year or so. Its really not healthy for a 32 year old man to be surfing disney stuff on the web all day is it?

Dont start collecting! Save yourself whilst you still can.

At first, you think its the stuff you're collecting thats eating all your money...
Then you realise you need a bigger house.

I pin trade, have magnets, have ALL the mugs from the resorts we've stayed at and the disney on ice mugs from since I was about 7, the antenae toppers, the mobile phone cases, various bits of jewellery, possibly every grumpy themed notepad disney has ever made, and a rather large amount of T-shirts and handbags. I have a lot of the kitchen stuff and actually use most of it, so I suppose that one isnt really taking up excess space.

Moral of the story is definitely dont let us ALL talk you into our collections or you wont be able to move in your house for tripping over Disney mugs. If you do start one, try to keep it restricted to a small area of Disneyana (one character etc) or try not to view it as a collection, but rather a selection of things you enjoy so you can make sure youre only getting things *** you really like the individual item, and not *** it fits well with your collection.

Also beware of letting other people know you collect unless you want them to start adding to it too.
