View Full Version : Just back and had a few problems with DDP

For the most part everything went very well and we definitely will use the plan again. Possibly even switching to the deluxe version. I was a little surprised at how many CMs aren't very user friendly with the plan though. Especially with the counter service. Upon our return we found two different places had charged our room and credit card with our entire meals even though we always told them when ordering that we were on the plan. Also we noticed on our credit card that a couple of places charged the tip even after DH paid cash for it. We had more than six in our party so our tip was mandatory. Since this was the first time we used the DDP this kind of shocked me. Do these things happen often?
I am not aware that they can charge your credit card or your room if you do not sign a bill authorizing this. Why did you give your credit card to any place where you were using the DDP? And if they were charging your room, it would have indicated a room charge on the bill that you signed, rather than listing your dining credits being used. Also, are you saying that a restaurant added on a tip that you did not authorize? for larger parties sometimes the gratuity is mandatory so it would have stated that on the check
Anyway, hope you got it straightened out.

I would have thought that you could show them your dining plan credits and adjusted this asily by showing the mistake and than they would not have charged your card seeing the dining plans not used and all. They usually make you sign before you leave for the charges too.

We didn't notice any of this until we got home. These were both done at counter service restaurants so there was no bill to sign. Apparently when he gave our card to the CM at the counter he/she did not listen to DH when he told them we were on the DDP and thought we were charging the meals to our room key. I'm not really sure how it happened actually. We found the charges on our am/ex account when I checked it online the day after we got back. The tip charges were there as well and we always paid the tips with cash. DH did call Disney but I'm not sure there is anything that can be done. :confused3 He's going to call American Express as well.

Yes, this does happen. This is exactly why we no longer get charging priviledges on our room key whenever we use the dining plan. No dining plan, they yes to charging. Everything that happened to you also happened to us during our trip last year at the WL. Every evening we found ourselves back at the front desk getting them to take the charges off of my cc and take the credits instead. As for the tip issue, that is horrible. Your post is a good example for folks to check their room bill and not just the last day. If you have no charging on your room card it is impossible for them to accidently charge your card instead of taking the credits.

Good advice. The funny thing is we did not want charging priviledges on our room key. We told the CM at AKV check in this when he asked but he said he needed to see a credit card anyway. I thought this was a bit odd. We didn't know we even had this until our waitress at Crystal Palace told us she had automatically charged the tip to our room key. DH questioned this and found out we did indeed have our CC added to our room. We were both quite upset but at that point just left it alone and told all other wait staff that we were paying the gratuity with cash. I guess we should have gone back to the front desk and had it taken it off. Lesson learned for sure.

We are on the QS DDP. Yesterday WGPE charged us for 2 meals plus a second charge for 3 meals. The 2 meal charge was correct, the 3 meal charge we had no knowledge of until we used the plan again.
Check your receipts at every meal and keep them in case you have a problem.

We've had mistakes too. We like to be able to charge to the room, but we get the kids' cards without charging privileges. We use the kiddie cards to pay for our DDP meals and snacks. We still have to check receipts to make sure the correct number of credits is subtracted, but no worries about the room charges.

That is a really good idea. I think I will do the same for my trip in May. I think I will also bring cash for the tips in the TS restaurants. Thanks for the idea. :thumbsup2

THat is so strange because that is how it also happened to us. We ask for no charging priviledges and when it happened at CHH we just couldn't believe they could charge our meals to our card when we didn't have a cc attached. We actually caught it when it happened, but the manager would not reverse it and told us to correct it at our resort. That's when we looked at our cards a second time and noticed it did not say "no charging" on it. When we corrected the charges we finally had our cards changed and got the no charging ones.

Thanks for posting this. We are debating about getting charge privileges as the only thing we will spend any money on is tips for the DxDP and maybe a few souveniors for the kids. This post has made us decide to not get the charge privileges and to stay on a cash payment basis for our incidentals.

Next trip if we're asked for a credit card at check in we will ask why they need it if we're not wanting charging priviledges and double check the room key to make sure it says "no charging". This wasn't even the only mistake this particular CM made while we were checking in. He took payment for the DDP on both of the rooms we had booked but only gave us room keys for one and told us to come back in a few hours as the rooms weren't ready anyway. When we returned we had a different CM and she told us we hadn't paid for the DDP on the second room and that's why we weren't given the room keys. We just about freaked. We had no receipt or proof that we had paid. She did get it straightened out and the manager at AKL came out and personally apologized but believe me we were having a definite melt down at the time.

DisneyFreaks Sorry to hear about what happened to you...that is exactly why I never get charging privliges. This year we are on dining plan I will carry a tiny amount of cash, if the kids see something I am sure it will be in one of the 10 million other shops at disney or we can get it the next daya we go back to that park. It is too bad you discovered it when you got home and Disney can't / wont do anything for you.

On our trip in October, we had several meals that our key would not work for. The waitress would come and tell us that our card was not showing any meals, and of course I didnt put credit card privledges on my key, as I was trying to really keep myself out of debt on the trip. Thankfully, I carried a little bit of cash with me each day, but had I not, Im really not sure what would have happened.
I spent more time at the front desk trying to get everything straightened out then I did doing anything else, and when I checked out, they gave me a huge bill for meals that I owed for, which was of course a mistake as I had paid for them OOP and then been credited back with my TS and CS.
I am debating on whether or not to use the plan this year, as Im sure that this was an isolated problem

This is what I did on our 1st trip and plan to do on the next one. I had heard too many stories about meals being accidently put on the credit card instead of being deducted from DDP, so I never gave the wait staff MY KTTW, just the kids since they didn't have charging priviledges. :thumbsup2
As a PP stated, you still need to check the receipt to verify that the correct number of CS/TS meals were deducted.
OP, did I read correctly that you didn't get receipts at the CS places? I find that odd. I hope this isn't standard as how would you verify that you had the correct amount of credits left?

Last trip DH and I had charging on our KTTW card, with no problems. I stopped by the front desk at our resort every few days and asked for a printout of current charges. We liked charging to our room over charging directly on our Disney Rewards because we would pick up on any errors, with the front desk print out, and handle them before leaving Disney.
If a charging error had occurred on our credit card, we would not know until we came home and checked our account..........much harder to get errors corrected after the fact.

Last october me and my daughter used the DDP at PSB and I used my cc to pay the tip since I didnt have cash and they charged my DDP credits and the full amount on the cc. I had to call after I got home and they reversed the charge but youd think they would have a system to not have these problems

Wow!
I checked all of the receipts to make sure they tracked correctly and then the master at checkout. We had 2 kids with charging privileges, which I thought meant the 2 that did not have them couldn't use their cards for even dining plan items but it sounds like the could have? We did train the teen and tween to look at their receipt and make sure it had been applied to the plan.
We had zero issues anywhere. I had even meant to use that $200 gc as we went and didn't remember it half the time and at checkout they were able to apply what was left on it without too much trouble (even though the system auto charged our card at 2am).
Bringing cash would have been a total pita! If kids can use the DDP even if their cards say no charging, I would change that next time, just to be safe! I loved being able to send the kids to get their own snacks and CS!

We also use the DDP and we do not get charging priviledges on our room keys. What I do is go to the Disney Store before hand and purcahse a gift card (I usually put a couple hundred on it) and I use this for tips. When you use it you will get a receipt back saying what the balance on the GC is. Then you do not have to deal with cash, your personal cc or being charged on to the room. It worked perfectly last time and I had some extra money on it at the end of our trip and used it for a couple souveniers.

This is a fantastic idea!! It never occured to me that we could do that--I figured we had to hand them the adult card to deduct the credits.

Most hotels make you put a CC on file at check in so if you take anything from the mini-bar (do any Disney hotels even have these?) or make phone calls from your room they can charge you for it. I wouldn't think it was weird that the CM at check in was asking for a CC, just double check that your room keys say "no charging."

I didn't know this. Thanks. Now I know we'll double and triple check our room keys and even ask directly if they put charging onto them. What really made me mad was that the CM at check-in had us sign a paper and when DH inquired as to what we were signing he stated that it was for charging on our room card. We pushed the paper back and said again that we didn't want it and he folded up the paper. Obviously he decided himself that we were going to have it no matter what. :confused3

The only place that has a mandatory tip of 10% for QS is the PepperMarket.

They stayed at AKV.
So I am guessing they were staying on DVC points -- where they preorder the DDP, but pay for it at check in.
Guests on a WDTC package prepay for the package (including any DDP) prior to arrival.

Last August we were a group staying in 3 rooms, but all of our TS meals were together. We were always careful to explain how many TS credits were to come off of each KTTW - and the only place we ran into issues was at Tutto Italia (but the meal was fantastic). Somehow, my sister's room had 4 credits taken off instead of 2 for her and 2 for my parents. The weird thing was the waiter actually ran the card through twice ... so my sister got a receipt for two meals and my dad got a receipt for two meals. It was only by chance that they checked the credit balances and realized there was a problem. We had to get it fixed up back at AKL, but at least they were able to fix it.
I guess the point is, always check your receipts and don't sign off on anything you're not sure of!

DH and I have not experienced any of these problems, but I do encourage you to check your receipt every time you hand them your card. We always do to make sure they did it right because we do like the freedom of also having charging privileges on our card. Plus, we like to look at the receipt to help us keep track of what we have left to use. I would think it might be a little less of a hassle if you can catch the mistake while still at the restaurant that caused it, rather than back at your room where it is just your word against theirs. Sorry this happened to the OP!

In our case, we did catch it at the restaurant, but they told us that the only way to get it fixed was back at our Resort. :confused3
I guess the places where you use your credits are tracked on your KTTW card, because we had no trouble getting things fixed ... the CM just looked up my sister's info and said "yes, Tutto Italia did take 4 of your credits", looked up my parents info and said "you're right, they didn't take any", then proceeded to credit my sister 2 TS and deduct 2 TS from my parents. Maybe the restaurants don't have this kind of access in order to make changes. I'm not sure.

That is exactly how we handled the CS meals in October. The kids' cards were used for CS meals. My card and only my card had charging priviledges, so we were certain where any mistakes came from.

I'm just wondering about a follow up to this story. Has anything been done? Your credit card company should be able to investigate this, and if satisfied that you were wronged, they should dispute and give you a credit.
Also, at the bottom of each statement that you get upon check-out with your final charges on it, there is either an email or phone number that you can contact in order to handle any charging issues. I can't get it at this moment, as baby is asleep on me, but I know I had to contact them one time as a credit from our resort didn't go through.
The other tip I'm going to give is that people should be checking on their charges at least each day, or every other day. Just stop by Concierge/Front Desk, and ask for a print up of your charges thus far. This way, you can deal with issues at the time.
It always baffles me when people seem surprised that Disney can make charging mistakes - it happens each and every day at grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, etc., so for those of you who don't check your receipts each time, lesson learned as mistakes can and do happen very often.
Good luck in getting this straightened out, Tiger :)

I just heard on the news a bar/restaurant that made a mistake, so they were going to give an $8.00 refund to the credit card....they gave an $80,000 refund :scared1: The customer was honest and reported it...the bar is throwing her a party...

Upon doing our own investigating we have found that although DH was religiously keeping track of our credits our DS and DDIL were not. Since their room was also on our reservation it was their credits that were not taken off and therefore charged to our room key/credit card. I don't understand why they did this since they were in a different room and had their own DDP credits on their room key only and not on ours. :confused3 DH has called our credit card company but they are acting totally confused. Our DS gave us the money to pay for the charges but this still doesn't seem fair since he already paid for the DDP for each member of his family and they cannot use them again. We should have checked the print out they left on our door but we were rushing around packing to leave. I guess it's just a lesson learned. I'm glad it wasn't a whole lot of money.

Wow, this thread has been very helpful, thanks to all for posting!
Great posts all around. I like the idea of using the room key vs. an actual charge card. A few years ago I used my Visa card to directly charge various items around the world. Long story short, we get a call from Visa about some questionable charges two weeks after we get home. Seems someone got a hold of the card number and charged sneakers on the west coast. We live in NY. The strange charge location triggered a Visa security check. I suspect it was a charge at a souvenir cart in EPCOT where the card number was swiped.
According to Visa, this happens quite frequently at WDW. Lesson guard your credit card info when at WDW.

That's how we've handled it too. We still use the adult card at TS restaurants so that we can charge the tip & alcohol to the room, but using the kids' cards at QS and snack stops means fewer opportunities for error.
We also don't use cash or our credit card anywhere at Disney; we let it all go to the room charge so we have a second chance to review everything before checkout.

The double tipping happened to us back in August. We had spent the day in Epcot and had dinner at LeCellier. We told our server we would be tipping in cash (as well as with other previous dinners) She said Great and went about her business. We loved her as our server and since our party is 7 we had an automatic tip amount which was 33.00. We left her a $50.00 bill for her tip. Since we were at Epcot that day, we had spent a small fortune in the Japanese gift shop as well as some others. That evening I went to the front desk to pay our bill and it was there that I discovered that we had tipped our LeCellier server $83.00! :scared1: Also discovered we doubled tipped at Boma's and Cape May Buffet. We had told all of our servers that we would be tipping in cash. Anyway, when I found out they had charged my card for the tip I almost started crying. I had our tip money budgeted. The castmate was kind enough to credit those amounts. I thought I was going to have to PROVE it to her, but how. She took my word for it and said anything that has been done can be undone! So I think this must happen a lot, if you're lucky to catch. We will not have charging priviledges this August. We only do it as a back up and pay cash as we charge every few days. I just don't like carrying that much cash to a park.
I also like the idea of using a childs card to pay for you dining plan meals. If only I had read that before on the DIS boards.:cutie:

We've been on DDP 5 times and have NEVER had an issue and I always use my KTTW as a charge card as well. BUT, I always check my receipts every use not just for dining. Mistakes happen unfortunately.
This is a good reminder to all to review your receipts!;)
Sorry to hear your dilemma OP, I hope it gets resolved to your satisfaction.

I'm confused about the double tipping issues that are popping up. Do people not check their receipts as they are signing them - you put in your own amounts for a tip, so I am confused here. It sounds like people aren't reading their bills and then just adding on the tip amount on the bottom of their receipts - is this what is happening? If not, I apologize, as I can't figure out how a server can charge a tip amount or change a final check amount that hasn't been authorized by the card holder?

yes the room key should say no charge on the front.
also, when people ask to "see" my credit card I always tell them ohhh well I don't have it with me. Solves that problem.
There is a place you have to check and sign when you check in if you want charging priveleges, make sure you ask for a copy after signing and if there is still a problem, show it to the manager.

I know it may not make a difference but whenever I sign a dinner receipt whether in or outside of disney I tip in cash. On the signed receipt on the tip line I write in the words "left on table". I was taught this many years ago by a friend of mine and have never been double charged.
OP I hope your issues have been resolved by your cc company or disney!!

That is exactly how we handled the CS meals in October. The kids' cards were used for CS meals. My card and only my card had charging priviledges, so we were certain where any mistakes came from.
This is what we did last year and we never had a problem. I also checked the print out sheet that was given to me by the CM at our resort at the end of our stay with my receipts before they were added to my CC.

Actually I'm confused as well. We had eight in our party so even though we had separate checks we were all charged the mandatory tip. DH always told our server he was paying for our tip with cash which he did. When we got home and I checked our credit card account I noticed that on two different occasions the restaurants had charged our tip to the room. Why I haven't a clue? They got the tip in cash :confused3 The only thing I can think of is that it was so crowded the server forgot that we had paid in cash? I did read here on this board about drawing a line through the receipt at the bottom where the tip amount is suppose to be but most times we didn't have any such place on our receipts. I think the tip charges are being removed though. The meal charges we have to pay for as they weren't taken from our DDP credits and I think it's too late to fix that now.

This is a great idea. We didn't have a line at the bottom of alot of our receipts but just writing this somewhere on it should help. Thanks for the tip.

If we don't get charging privileges on our room card, can we use a credit card at the restaurants for extas?:confused3

If you have the charging option available on your key to the kingdom card unforunately ths can happen. This happened to my parents as well last Sept. Luckly we did not pick the charge opption for our key to the world cards. They had the problem with the double tipping! They even told the server they were paying cash and server assured them they would not charge it to room key when they take the key took bill out your DDP, but 3 times out of 10 days they charged the tip to their card for all 7 of us ughh. The good thing is they caught it and had it fixed at the front desk, but was a hastle. By the middle of the trip they had customer service at the front desk take OFF charging option from their key to the world card. My parents will never pick charging option again at check in due to their experience last fall. They were paranoid the rest of the trip making sure to look at and keep all receits.

I was just going to ask a question about using gift cards for tips, but I see you answered it already. Thanks!
I bought a $200 Disney gift card to take with us to use specifically for tips and incidentals. I do not plan on putting ANYTHING on a credit card during this trip!
