Kevin, have you seen the D23 magazine yet? If not, shame on you for saying things you do not know.

It is a BEAUTIFUL magazine, it is 12" x 12" (much larger than a traditional magazine), it has heavy weight paper and NO advertising at all!! If you compare it to People magazine ($5) it is that price because it is 50% advertising. The articles are written by the people who make the Disney magic, the exact people who Disney fans cherish and admire the most.

The pictures are awesome, it is something you would put on your coffee table. When you get one, and I hope you do, you will see for yourself why the price is $16.00. It is not cheep to make and print a magazine this size, especially without ads.

If you are a fan of Disney history and its people, you will love the magazine for sure. Kevin, please give it a try.

--

I guess I am just getting tired of people who keep bashing D23 and saying it should have included a loyalty program. I did not see anything in the pre-announcement stuff that lead me to believe there was any loyalty part of this, and people keep insisting there was. D23 its what it is, let's enjoy it for what it is, and let Disney know they really SHOULD have a loyalty program in place, but it should be separate from D23.

I am now getting off my soapbox, but let's keep D23 and loyalty program separate. Thanks.

I have seen the D23 magazine in person at Barnes and Noble and I do not think it's worth $16.00. I don't care what kind of paper they used and I would not mind it if they had advertising in it. They could make the old Disney magazine for much less and I enjoyed it just as much, if not more.

I'm not dissapointed that D23 didn't include a loyalty program, I'm disapointed that "Disney" hasn't produced a loyalty program.

D23 has no interest to me as of yet, because I can get the magazine at B&N...I don't have the money to buy the stuff they have created...and the interesting things to read are available to all, or will be on someones Disney website.

Kevin, have you seen the D23 magazine yet? If not, shame on you for saying things you do not know.

Yes...and I still stand by the fact that I got Walt's 900 page biography for $21.00. I think $16.00 is a very high price. And thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt.

I am thrilled that you are so happy with what you have received. Has anything anyone has said altered YOUR opinion of what you paid to join?

I have stated this repeatedly....During the roll out Bob Iger declared that this was for "Disney's highest affinity group". This lead a LOT of people to think that this was something for everyone. From everything I'm reading, there are a LOT of people that feel left out. I'm one of them.

Again....I'm thrilled that you are happy with your purchase.

This will be their biggest problem. It is nice to have the magazine, but the interesting articles will be posted on a website while the latest magazine is still hot off the press. Those who join (I haven't decided yet) will have to decide if they want the pretty pictures for themselves or if they really just want to read the articles. As for the "discounts", they have excluded us by only offering a discount for a convention in CA. I don't know about anyone else, but I am having a tough time convincing DH to book our next WDW trip much less trek across the states for a (I think) $9 discount for a CA convention.

I think I will bow out of the whole D23 thing.

Blinders are a terrible thing to wear, you don't get to see the entire horizon when fixated on one small idea. Walt never had blinders on.

Hmm.. that advice seems to be something people on both sides to take. No offense, but it seems to me that Kevin's POV was the one without blinders, not yours. Sorry though!

I'm sorry you feel the need to bow out of the discussion.

One of the things you learn very quickly in this environment is that many people will have a different view point than you and as long as they follow the DIS guidelines and are respectful....they get get to express it just as you get to express yours.

It seems that there are folks with differing opinions of D23 and just because their opinions dont match yours doesnt mean that they arent knowledgeable about what they are talking about, wearing blinders or fixated on a small idea.

It just means see things differently then you.

Hey Kevin, My oldest son (21) made this huge presentation to me Xmas morning, including a very serious speech about morals, values and God. He then presented me with the new family bible aka Walt's autobiography....it was hilarious.

btw, I'm with you on this one.

I'm a D23 member. Do I think others should be in love with D23...no. I'm a member because I love Disney magazines and thought it would be something cool on my coffee table. For me it was a magazine subscription with a couple neat perks. I can see why others don't like it, but I think I'll enjoy being a member.

D23 hasn't convinced me yet that it's worth my $75. They gave it such hype that I thought it had to be bigger than it really was. But I'm waiting to see what happens. I bought the magazine. I really like it. I work in publishing so I understand the print costs and appreciate a nice publication.
If they add more to it I might bite but I'm not a history buff (tho Disney history does interest me) and I don't really collect anything so I have no interest in exclusive merchandise.
My family goes to Disney at least once a year, sometimes more, so I definitely would love some type of loyalty program. But I'm not expecting it. Maybe the situation this country is in has to get even worse before Disney considers a loyalty program.
In the business I'm in, if the fish don't bite, you change the bait.

I'm a DVC Member and I receive a magazine 4 times a year from Disney - its a magazine related to DVC stuff and its all good., in fact, I just received my latest issue this past week.
I really can't see the rhyme or reason to spend $75 on D23. I read the store display magazine at Barnes & Noble and I thought it was underwhelming. The website is interesting and I downloaded and printed a lot of interesting Disney stuff for free - the history of Walt Disney, the history of he Company and the list of every Disney movies - all good stuff.
I guess the bottom line for me is that I would rather use that $ 75 towards my next Disney trip - be it for airfare, dining, hotels or park tikets or even merchandise before I spend $75 on D23.
You know if they had priced it at $ 20 or $ 25 I would have joined without thinking but $75 makes me think and pass.

Pretty much my logic, too. I seriously do not need any more "stuff", so the collectibles aren't interesting to me, and I can't say I intend to keep the certificate or go to a convention. But I like Disney magazines. And I knew I'd go out and buy them if I didn't join. (Also, I bought D23 on the same day I bought a few other items from Disney online. The cost of D23 put me over the needed amount on a discounted shipping deal, and the price difference there made the cost of joining pretty close to that of just buying the magazines at B&N.) I know I could probably read the info online at some point, and I love getting information online, but there are some publications I just like being able to hold in my hands.

I got my magazine in the mail today, and I have to say that I think it's really lovely. A pricey magazine to be sure, but I find the content interesting and the articles well written. I was pleasantly surprised, as I did wonder whether I would come to regret my purchase. Count me in for wanting a loyalty program and a Disney museum, but, as someone who just joined D23 for the magazine, I'm content with the purchase so far.

Sadly... as D23 member I have to agree.. I like other unofficial Disney fan magazines more, I honestly haven't gotten around to really reading the D23 magazines yet. It might be worth it if you are in California to be able to get a chance to attend some of the cool stuff, but since I'm not, I'm kind of disappointed. It seems like something that might be worth it at the time, especially with all the promises of good things to come, but so far I don't think it's worth it and don't plan on renewing unless something better gets added to the membership.

I am not able to take advantage of the D23 perks - money, time, distance.

I would like to look at the D23 magazine. I do not have a close by Barnes and Noble.

Would anyone like to let me borrow their copies? I would be very neat with them. Would not spill any cake or pie. Would send them back promptly.

There is no loyalty program with D23.

The loyalty program is something that the DIS Unplugged team wanted/expected/implied that D23 should have even before the announcement of D23. When the D23 club did not include it the DU team, mostly Pete, ripped the program from top to bottom many times over. Pretty much anyone who says anything about D23 never intending to have a loyalty program is looked down on.

D23 is about the entire Disney community, not just people who attend WDW or Disneyland often. Just look at the D23 Expo in a few weeks. The Expo line up of events, keynote talks and 3rd party vendors looks and sound amazing!!!! With all of the above and beyond things D23 has done and is doing, at some point I think some acknowledgment by the DU team is necessary. But I don't think that would happen, that would mean saying you were wrong to assume things.

I wish I could be there, but I will be WDW for my anniversary trip.

I wish I could be there, but I will be WDW for my anniversary trip.I have to say I agree with Yvette and Kathy on this one. I don't feel like rehashing the whole D23 conversation again and again. Some people like D23 and some people don't feel like the $75 is worth it. We're a big community and are not going to agree on every issue. I, for one, have gotten more interested in Disney history since I became a special correspondent for the show. Researching into the history of things has helped me with interviews and in writing blogs. That being said, I don't think I see the need for me personally to join D23 (again, this is just me). I can purchase the magazine at Barnes&Noble if I want it, and I am interested in the Haunted Mansion article, and I can get tickets to the D23 Expo if I want to (albeit it for $7 more). So at this point, I'm not interested in joining D23. Although, I know a number of people have joined, and are very satisfied with their decision. Great.

I thought you worked in a hotel? Don't they have a loyalty program? You were talking about staying offsite, because you get such a low rate. I thought it was because you worked for the hotel chain. A loyalty program is something that rewards people for being loyal to their company. Like Baker's Square. They are a restaurant that also sells PIE. So, they might give you a punch card and when you've purchased ten pies, you get a free one.

Make sense? That way you're going to want to go to Baker's Square to get your pies instead of somewhere else. And, they are rewarding you for being a loyal customer.

I know that this is like the car wreck that I shouldn't look at....but I cant help myself. I've been laying face down for a week. Looking at anything is better than that.

How do you know what anyone intended D23 to be, other than conjecture?

Answer....you dont. You learned what it was the same time everyone else learned what it was. You decided after the announcement that it was right for you. Prior to the announcement, there was only speculation.

No one is looking down on anyone. We disagree....plain and simple. There is no value judgement. I dont think you are stupid for being a fan of D23. I just dont see it's value. If you do....HOORAY!!!!! BRAVO!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

If you equate disagreement with looking down on you....how do you deal with elections, religious beliefs, sports or even which movie to see on Saturday night?

Nothing the Dis Unplugged team does really qualifies as "necessary", so I'm not exactly sure why you feel our approval is important.. I'm quite unclear as to what our "seal of approval" will do for you or D23.

I think that if you listen to the shows where D23 was dicussed, you will hear that we stated our opinions, stated what we hoped the program would include and stated why we were disappointed.

Opinions, hopes and disappointments are not assumptions.

As I have stated on more occasions than I can count.....I am thrilled that you feel D23 is the right thing for you.

So, Kevin, while you are reading your D23 magazine, do you eat cake or pie?

I'm bi-partisan.

Yesterday, I had a craving for donuts, so we went to Dunkin Donuts.

I ordered two for John and two for me. I mean really....who eats "A" donut?

As it was hot and both varieties invariably included chocolate frosting...I asked for a box, so that they wouldnt stick together.

I was told that "the smallest box holds 6 donuts and we cant put 4 in the box."

Do I have to tell you what happened?

AWESOME!!!!! That has happened to me sooo many times!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

My grandmother used to make this Oreo ice cream cake/pie thing and it was sooo good!!! I think she used to bak the pie like regular and then cut the bottom off...put it in a cookie crumb crust with Oreos and I believe..chocolate chip cookies mixed together. Then..she would slice the cake in three's spoon the ice cream and then freeze it for like 2 hours or something. Then right before she would serve it to me....she would drizzle HOT FUDGE ALL OVER IT!!!!:cloud9::cloud9::cloud9:

Man...I could go for that now!!!!

Surely there is a loyalty program of sorts at Disney World. It's called an Annual Pass. As a normal multi day ticket holder I don't get access to special annual passholder rates for hotels, I don't get special access to new/refurb attractions, I don't get access to the Tables in Wonderland card when dining at WDW, I don't get money off Cirque du Soleil or miniature golf or AMC theatres, I don't get money off in certain shops in Downtown Disney, I certainly don't save anything when taking tours or if I decide to play a round of golf and there's the money off the Spa's in WDW as well as the boat rentals discounts.

Let's all get off our D23 soap boxes. If you don't think it's money well spent, don't join. Simple. But also don't use a medium where people don't have a fair chance to reply to rants and raves about something that you don't like when they do just because it's not what YOU guys wanted. It's just plain boring.

You usually dont have to pay for a "loyalty" program. It's the way a company shows appreciation for your continued business.

The person who visits Disney once or twice has the same opportunity to take advantage of the Annual Pass and it's perks as the person who visits 365 days out of every year. You certainly get more value with continued use....but it's not a loyalty program.

A medium where people dont have a chance to reply???? I'm pretty sure that's what has been provided to you, free of charge I might add, with this website.

As for being boring.....I dont listen or respond to things I find boring.

D23 hasnt been discussed for months on the Podcast.

The only current discussion is being held here.

Have you read anything I've posted regarding whether D23 is "for me" or not?

I know it's arrogant to quote one's self....but this is what I said in post # 53.

"No one is looking down on anyone. We disagree....plain and simple. There is no value judgement. I dont think you are stupid for being a fan of D23. I just dont see it's value. If you do....HOORAY!!!!! BRAVO!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!"

Then again, I wouldn't turn either one down if they were offered. There aren't any KK stores in my part of NJ, so I can't afford to be too picky, y'know? =)
