Ok- last competition of the season. @Nashua High South. Got there late. No one bother to tell me that the website was wrong and the comp started at 11a.m. not 12! Luckily, I arrived around 11:45- and our team hadn't gone yet. I didn't have anytime to play. I set up my video cam on a tripod on the top of the bleachers and using my 50mm 1.8, set my D80 to manual, ISO 800, f/2.8, 1/640 and just started shooting.
These are straight from the camera.

Thanks:) I think I did better this past weekend than last. Maybe better light or maybe I'm better off if I don't have time to overthink!

Congrats on some great action shots.
My shots from the State's here in CT did not turn out. I had the right setting for everything except the focus. I was using a manual focus lens, and I did not do a good job on the focus. Plenty of time to practice before next season.

I couldn't even imagine trying to manual focus all that action! Too fast for me! The 50mm 1.8 set at 2.8 worked well in that gym we were in.
Tempted to try that tamron 2.8 for next season. 28-75 would be perfect range.

After seeing your results, I am thinking more seriously about the same lens for next season as well.
