Tipping?

My DH and I are in a debate about tipping. We both agree that tipping is necessary; however, we disagree about the amounts. While on our vacation last week the topic came up several times. I told my DH that I was going to post the question on this board to see which of us is correct. So how much do you tip:

1) bell service
2) Magical Express driver
3) housekeeping
4) bartender

Who else should I be tipping? :confused3

1 and 2-$1 per bag
3-Depends on the Service I usually leave $20-40 for a week
4-15% average

Wait staff of course, 15% average, Valet Parking $2-3
Ummm what else? Can't think of anything?

1) $2 per bag, coming and going
2) 10% is a good gauge, but not mandatory
3) $5 per day is nice.
4) I don't generally tip a bartender, but it's your choice

I would also tip:

Concierge - $10-$20 (only if you use the concierge)
Waiter - 15-20% at least, if the service is not good I have done 10%

Funbobbi, I am curious why you would tip at all if service is not good? A tip is recognition of service above what is expected.

I have no problem not tipping and have a son who is a server. Restaurants, hotels, etc. should not expect their employees to live from tips. Fair payment should be the norm. I don't get tipped for providing good service and yet I am in a service industry.

I work as a server & agree that companies should not expect us to live on tips, but they do so I am always the best server I can be.

But please bear in mind that a lot of servers have to tip out to the kitchen staff a percentage of their food sales, so if you don't tip I am paying to serve you. Crazy? I agree, but unfair.

1) $1 per bag. If 4 bags, usually round up to $5
2) Never used Magical Express
3) $1 per person in room per night, left daily as the staff might not be cleaning your room the whole week. Hate to have one person do a great job for you for 7 days, wait til the last day to tip and have a different person assigned to your room collect the whole tip.
4) Usually around $1 per drink. Depends on total for the drinks, change received, service etc.


Funbobbi, curious why you don't tip bartenders. I figured that one was pretty much standard.

If you posted this on the Community Board, you would be in for one whopper of a debate.

1 - $1 per bag
2 - if there are no bags involved, why tip?
3 - we usually go with $1 per person per day (you will find someone wh will tell you this isn't a tipped position at WDW)
4 - depends on the order and service. Bad service, no tip.

Thanks. Very helpful. It is a matter of opinion, but I like to know what others are doing. I loved the cruise because they tell you the amount. I actualllt think my husband and I are both correct. So, I guess we can stop the debate. :thumbsup2

I tried to tip our lobby concierge last April...he was extremely helpful. However he returned the $20 and said he wasn't permitted to accept it. He then told me if I wanted to I could tell his supervisor how happy I was with his service.

1) $1-2 per bag -- but then again we tipped one guy $20 once for 4 bags as he gave us a tour on the golf cart thing through our resort and told us some stories. He was a great guy and when it was time to carry our bags to the room I never saw a Bell service employee move so fast to get the job done.

2) $1-2 per bag only if we put bags under the coach

3) $1-2 per person per night; sometimes extra if we get exceptional service or we ask for extra stuff

4) Depends, I don't have an exact figure -- if we build a tab then we leave 15%ish, if not on tab whatever we feel like leaving from the change we get back. Don't have an exact figure since we aren't big drinkers anymore.
