Explain waitlist to me, please!

In order to be on the waitlist for a certain DVC ressie, do I already have to have a DVC ressie. Specifically, I have ressies at POR for November for a long weekend. If possible, I'd like to switch to BWV, standard studio (am I dreaming of getting such 5 1/2 months out?). If none if available, can I be put on a waiting list or is that only if "option 2" is a DVC resort-say, I have to switch from POR to an available DVC property in order to be put on the waiting list for a BWV standard view studio? It's just that I'd rather stay at POR than VWL or OKW, looking at BWV because of the convenience to Epcot.

Is your POR reservation with cash or points? If it's with cash (CRO), there's no problem doing a waitlist for just BWV if it's not available when you call. If it's with points, you can't switch to a DVC resort once you've made a reservation at a non-DVC with those same points.

my POR ressie is with cash through DC, that's WDTC. Sounds like I'll be able to waitlist. Of course, I'll know for sure when I call MS Monday, but I want to know NOW! Why aren't they open weekends?
