Ok, for the four of us running the muddy buddy (anyone else can toss in their two cents) but I thought it would be nice for the four of us to have thread to chat.
Paul, Are you doing anything different for this event? Your training is most likely advanced enough that you could run this thing tomorrow.
Dave, Guessing since your a runner then your mostly ready to go. Are you doing any strength training to prepare?
Aaron, Whats on your training agenda?
Me, I have a good friend that doesn't have a life and is my training partner. If you don't know I've lost about 40 lbs in the last year, but have always been "athletic" or at least played sports ;) I can stand running! I run because I have to run, but if I don't have some sort of ball in my hand then I will not run! Of course I am running to prepare and will try to work my way up to 4-5 miles before the event. I'm also lifting and started on the stationary bike. This week was the first big week for me that I started "training" I have been workout out before this, but started my "training" this week. Managed 4 days of working out, played basketball, football and some lite running and biking along with some weights.
Another question. I can get us shirts if everyone is okay with it. Just pick a color and let me know. Should we get 4 of the same color or should we get 2 different colors?

Hey Don, I must admit I'm not doing anything special to train for the Muddy Buddy. I'm actually shooting for a half marathon (maybe a full) on May 3rd in Pittsburgh (my old hometown). So I'm training for that. If I end up doing the full marathon in Pittsburgh, then I am going to be slow and in recovery mode for the Muddy Buddy the following week. If I only do the half marathon, then I'll be in good shape for the Muddy Buddy.
Congratulations on your weight loss. That is awesome! :worship: I'm in the same boat as you. I lost about 40+ pounds when I started running again (what I call my 3rd running incarnation) in January 2006. I had run in high school, stopped in college, run in grad school, stopped when I had kids and got a faculty position, and started up again in January 2006. My weight had shot up to over 200 lbs, and I was tired of being so out of shape. I told myself in January 2006 that I was going to run the full marathon at Disney in January 2007. I got myself up off the couch, started walking 2 miles a day, and worked myself up to finish the full marathon in 2007.
My exercise has now become a habit, and I've been going ever since.

Love the shirt idea. Personally, I would go for 4 matching shirts in as bright and loud of a color you can find. That way peole can see us in the crowd easily. I think, we would be lost among all the people in our white "DIS Unplugged" shirts.
I still need to find a bike.

As soon as Paul weighs in I'll get the shirts. I'll have then shipped to each of you so at some point I'll ask for your addresses. To wait and bring them to the event might be too much "stress"

Training Agenda = Cake!!! :lmao: In all seriousness...I haven't started yet, but getting outside will be key for me. I'd rather be outside running, walking, an exercising. Running, walking and exercising inside is difficult for me because I need a change of scenery, or at least it helps. For me it's all about the running. I can bike very well, but my running endurance is weak.
Like you Don I've lost a lot of weight, and I think it's going to make a huge difference in me participating in this race. Last May I ran in a 5K (3.1 miles) and had to walk at times, but I was 35 pounds heavier then and I trained very little.
As for the shirts I wouldn't mind different colors. Navy blue would be good for me so I don't stick out. I need to be as muted as possible. ;)

How are you guys getting your bikes and equipment down here?
The only thing stopping me and the wife from doing the event is that you have to have 2 bikes...and we currently have 0. We're runners and I wouldn't use a bike that much to warrant going out and buying one for the event.

I still need to figure out a bike for our team for the event. From what I've heard, the bike section is not really that critical because the biker needs to wait for the runner at the obstacles (at least the last obstacle). I'm thinking of getting a cheap bike from Wal Mart or Target, and then donating it to GKTW when I'm done. Of course, I haven't had time to look into any of this yet, but that's what I'm thinking.

Is it 1 bike or 2 for the team? Someone had told me earlier when I had talked to them about it that each person needed a bike, but I dunno how that would work. ALso with 1 bike my wife is like 10 inches shorter than I am so that would make for an interesting bike ride lol

1 bike per team. You leap frog each other. One person runs and the other bikes between obstacles.
Here's the link to the event info if you haven't seen it yet. It explains the race. :)

Bike shipping costs... it looks like it would cost anywhere between $40 --> $70 to ship my bike from Rochester to Orlando.
I googled Orlando Bike Rental and found this...
http://www.orlandobikerental.com/bike_rentals.html
Hourly Bike Rentals are done right out of our
shop on the West Orange Trail. Starting out at
Mile Marker 0 at the shop, the trail stretches to the
northeast for 24 miles. Bike Rentals start at $6
per hour or $30 per Day.
All of our bikes are available for off-site rentals
also. We deliver our bikes to all area hotels and
resorts. To avoid the delivery charge, you can also
pick the bike up yourself. We will provide you with
a free bike rack so that you can transport the bike
anywhere you might want to go.
Maybe we could get one of those resort "Surrey Bikes"

I'm planning on going for 3 or 4 mile run tomorrow I'll go there for my run and get as much information on it as possible for you guys. I'll tell them what's going on and what you guys are doing and maybe they can swing you a deal since you're doing the run for charity and what not. I'll see what I can do! I'll take some pics too so you guys can see the trailhead and what not.
Probably smarter to do all this before my run so I'm not panting while I'm trying to ask questions lol

Some XLs are tents. Some Ls are skin tight. It depends on the maker I guess. Change mine to an XL please. :confused3

Hey, I'm doing this with my 14yo niece and I'm also needing a bike. Any reason we couldn't rent a bike at Disney? We're staying @ the FW cabins and I know they rent bikes. Would the Cruiser-style bikes that they rent be wrong for this race?
Thanks in advance-

DonnaHi Donna- My understanding is that the bike is really not all that critical for the race. The biker needs to wait for the runner for the last obstacle to go through the mud pit together. So any bike will really do. I don't know if Disney has any rules about taking the bike away from Fort Wilderness or not.

I'm not changing much Puck. I may break out my mountain bike when the weather clears up just to reacquaint myself with riding off road. At 41 years old I figure I'm as strong and fast as I'm going to get. My current state of fitness will have to do. If I'm not ready for the race now, I won't ever be. We'll find out in May!! :lmao:

Yea, the two man teams have to finish together, but they don't meet up until the mud pit if I read correctly.
Dave mentioned switching up teams on facebook. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I'm not too worried about being competitive, but the only advantage is Paul and I could make the Beast division I think.
I don't have any major plans for Friday night, except Downtown Disney. If they are open late enough I could register Friday night.

I'm ok with switching up teammates. It's totally up to you guys. We don't have any plans. I was hoping to register Friday night to avoid the Saturday morning rush, but either way works for me. Ok...Back from an almost 1.5 mile run. I'm hurting! I was buckled over afterwards and my lungs were burning. The good news is I didn't stop during the run. There were times I wanted to stop but I told myself to keep going. I'm somewhat encouraged.

Great job Aaron, I'm up to around 2-3 miles when I run, but I still hate it.
Just back, literally, from my 5 mile bike. Took the mountain bike out and tried to stay off road when possible. Wasn't too bad, although I felt like I was going pretty slow. Hopefully that is just because my bike is 10 years+ old.

Hey Gang!
I just booked our Friday night stay at AKV (Kidani Village). I wanted BCV because we are staying there on Saturday night, but it's completely booked. So, we'll switch resorts. No big deal.
I chose AKV because it was available and it's close to WWoS. I thought about Pop, but I figured we are going to hang around the resort on Friday night after packet pick-up and we could enjoy the new pool area. This is unless we decide to meet afterwards; which is ok with us. I just want to make sure I get to bed early since we'll be getting up very early on Saturday morning.

We can hang at AKV Friday night! Cya there.

Hey Gang!
I just booked our Friday night stay at AKV (Kidani Village). I wanted BCV because we are staying there on Saturday night, but it's completely booked. So, we'll switch resorts. No big deal.
I chose AKV because it was available and it's close to WWoS. Are you guys both staying at Kidani? We are thinking of switching to AKV for that Friday as well. I think we would stay at Jambo House though. Where do you guys plan on hanging out at? Victoria falls? New Kidani pool? I know nobody has experienced it yet but do you think it would be very inconvenient to hang out together if we were staying in separate buildings? Just thinking out loud.

It wouldn't be inconvenient at all Paul. If you guys are at AKV we should all hang out together. I'm not sure where Dave is staying....Dave? I called Member Services and there wasn't any studio availability at Jambo. We could hang out at Victoria Falls or the pool. Just thinking out loud, but with the kids it maybe better to hang out near the new pool and/or pool bar at Kidani.
Do we want to eat at AKV after packet pick-up? Sanaa, Boma, Mara? Or just grab what we can since time might be limited?

I'm planning on any hangout time to be at the new Kidani water area. Since we have young kids I think they will enjoy that the most. We are planning on Downtown Disney and maybe Disney Quest on Friday, but we'll see how it goes and we might just hang at the hotel instead. Not know what the pool/water play area looks like leaves it a bit up in the air.

I've been hitting it real hard lately. I've regained almost all of my strength since my shoulder reconstruction. My weight is currently around 208. I do a lot of cardio but I also lift pretty heavy so I tend to keep a bit of weight on. I shouldn't weigh less than 205 by the time the race gets here. Think you can swing 195?

Well good news/bad news on that front. 195 shouldn't be too difficult for me to maintain. I threw out my back today (back spasms) but it doesn't usually keep me down for more than a day or two. Guess I've been pushing too hard the last week or so. I'll be doing a fair amount of lifting so I should be able to stay in the 195-200 range.

Yea, I've been lifting for some time. I started about a year ago when I decided to REALLY lose weight. Having muscle really helped me lose weight. I'm not huge by any means, but I have gotten stronger for sure.

Good Morning MudMates. I'm still in Erie, PA, and I'm trying to stay "unplugged", but I had to check in. :surfweb:
Don - I hope your back is OK. Get some rest, and keep us posted.
Aaron - great job on your run the other day. Don't push it too hard, too fast. There's nothing wrong with walking, but great job.
Paul - Sounds like you and Don are teaming up to be a "Beast". To be honest, I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of you and I running "against" each other, competing, and seeing what we can do. Then we can wait at the mud pit to all finish together.
I'll check in more tomorrow with details about when we will meet up, etc. in Florida, but we have time to think about that.
Oh, one final thing, I was hoping our donations would go into the general pool for the DIS Unplugged $20k challenge. Are you all down with that? I've noticed some people asking about that.

Hey Dave...I'm doing pretty well considering. As long as I only take a mile or mile and a half at a time I should be ok. My legs are a bit sore today; especially my quads, but it's not too bad at all.

Hey Guys,
I was looking over some of the Muddy Buddy specifics over lunch. I see their are 5 segments to the race (I think Paul told me that before). They are suggesting the stronger runner should run at the start of the race so they get 3 of the 5 running segments.
I also noticed the course terrain is somewhat rough...Lots of hills, off-road, etc...I even saw where you might have to go through water up to your waist depending on the course (I saw that on a video)....Fun and interesting at the same time. :thumbsup2

I have an interesting problem. I'm noticing towards the end of my run, and especially after I'm done, my throat is burning. I'm not sure if its my lungs or my throat, but honestly it feels like my throat. I could be wrong.
It could be the way I'm breathing when I run. I breath in and out of my mouth. I believe the correct method of breathing is through your nose and out your mouth....Does that sound right? My thought is I'm taking in too much air through my mouth which is causing the burning.

It could be that you're taking too much air in through your mouth, and it's drying out your throat. It could also be some pollen in the air and allergies. I think the more you run, the breathing thing will work itself out. Keep at it.

Slow your pace and breathing down a bit. Try to inhale through your nose and exhale out your mouth. Stay very hydrated. Take it easy, we need you in tip top shape for the bus party and cruise and DATW!!

A little sore, but excited that I might be able to compete with this.
I was going to start adding running next week. I am also going to add biking the following week, I think.
Even if I don't get to compete, I can get in shape. :thumbsup2

You also don't have to run the entire time. I started with walking, then did a run/walk pattern, and now I mostly run. However, for long races - marathons - I'll still insert walk breaks here and there.

Dave, did you register for the marathon? I heard they closed registration. If you run the marathon, you will run just 1/2 block from my house. You will need to let me know what time you think you will be running by mile 15. I am just a couple of blocks from that point.

KimYeah, Uuuuum, no I didn't. I heard from some friends the other day that they closed the marathon registration. I'm really bummed because I was told by their reps that it wouldn't close out this first year back. I did get put on the waiting list though. We'll see what happens. :confused3 If I get into the race I will definitely let you know. I'll need some cheerleaders for sure - especially after the half mile marker. So you must live in Shadyside. I used to live around there too when I went to college at Pitt.
The course goes 1/2 block in front of my MiL's house on the north side too. She's a block off of Western Ave at Mile 8. In fact the church I got married in is on Western Ave.

I'm going to bike and run tomorrow (hopefully)It's all good Don. One person's training has no bearing on another's - it's the effort that counts. Good for you for getting out there. Remember, we all be in the mud pit together anyway.

Looking forward to it. I PMed John and let him know how we were doing in our effort to raise money for GKTW. Needless to say he was surprised by the amount. I asked him what the easiest way was to transfer the money into the Dis t-shirt fund. I'm not sure it's possible. Is the money going directly to GKTW or can we give it to John?

I completed a 1.2 mile run today. I think I figured out what was causing the burning in my lungs and throat. I think I was going too fast during my runs. I slowed down today and that's seemed to help quite a bit. Not only that, but I felt like I could have run further, but I didn't push it. So, the key is to slow down at a managable pace. If I do that I should be A-Ok!

I would think the crew could just take the T-Shirt total and add the Muddy Buddy GKTW total together and announce an overall total. :thumbsup2

Good work Aaron. I decided to cross train today and did a 3 mile bike and 1.5 mile run. It wasn't too bad, I felt like I could bike further, but I still hate running!!

Good job Don and Aaron. Rest day for me today. I'm in Washington DC now, and it turns out some of my WISH marathon friends live next door to the hotel I'm in. We're going to get together for runs while I'm here.

Good Morning Muddy Buds: I got 5 miles in this morning with my WISH friends. Now I have to clean up to go to NSF for meetings from 8a-7p. I wanted to make sure I got my run in before I went because I'm going to be beat afterwards.

Chris, what kind of running do you usually do?
I started my bike/run back to back this weekend and it was "interesting", I did better than I thought, but I think running after biking is going to be rough.

I started at a mile and have been working my way up from there...I can now run 2 without much problem and have done 3 a couple of times. I hope to run 5 or 6 before the race.

3 fast miles for me today. I gave myself 23 minutes to get to 3 miles. I was huffing and puffing at times but the running is really coming along well. I normally don't run fast at all. The muddy buddy is broken up into short bursts of a mile, so I figure I'll work on explosiveness rather than long distance. I can get 7 or 8 miles in now, so I'm not going to push it as far as distance is concerned. pirate:

I've never run anything either. I've done a bunch of charity walks...but nothing that required any sense of speed.
Friday I ran "off road" (read: not on the side walk--mostly in the mucky grass). Its harder than I remember as a kid.

I tried to do that this weekend as well. Ran in the grass instead of the road. Makes for an interesting run trying to watch every step so you don't roll an ankle.

Oh, about my DC run... I guess I should say I'm in Arlington, VA not downtown DC. We ran on a rail trail - the Custis Trail and then met up with the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. Very nice run.
Paul, good luck on your mission. Travel safely. Hurry home.
ETA: I'm back. Another 5 miles down in a very relaxed, comfortable 10 min/mile pace.

I had a good workout today.
I am going to try to get a good walk in tonight, and hopefully run by Friday. Woo Hoo!
I may have already mentioned this, but some logistics I've learned about the race. There are 5 segments to the race and the race is over 6 miles long. This means each segment will be around 1.25 miles long if my math is correct.
There will be 5 obstacles in the race. I'm not sure if the mud pit is considered one of the obstacles or not. It also seems like the terrain of the race will be through trails, grass, uphill and downhill. I'm not sure how much uphill and downhill terrain there will be. I'm also not sure if there will be any running on pavement.
I thought I also read that we should have water on our bikes so we can stay hydrated.

Some other things I read...(btw, the website has a good FAQ section), you must wear a helmet at all times. I'm going to Wal-Mart Friday night if anyone wants to go with me to get a helmet and water bottle.
I may also be purchasing a bike at the same time if that seems the best route.
We should also try to put something on our bikes to pick it out of the crowd easier. I'm thinking we can get someone to decorate it for us ;) Some lime green mickeys or something.

I thought the rules said that we wouldn't be allowed to participate without a water bottle or hydration pack?

Don't they sell those long little flag poles? We could glue LGMHs to the flags? Something like this?
