View Full Version : Muddy Buddy Training!
OK, I had my doctor's appointment today at 11:00a. I've torn something in my lower back that is giving me back spasms (just like Don was telling me on FB). He prescribed pain killers and muscle relaxants, and we talked for a long time about my half marathon on Sunday. He said I wouldn't do any permanent damage if I ran the half marathon, but it would set back my recovery from the injury. So I'm really trying to decide what to do right now. I'm leaning towards not running on Sunday, and trying to be fully recovered for Florida and the Muddy Buddy. However, Pittsburgh was the race I've been shooting for - for a long time. This is my hometown race, and the first time they're having the marathon in 5 years. My mother in law lives 1 block off the course. We're going back to Pittsburgh regardless this weekend, and it will really stink to see everyone else running. Uuugh...
Dave....Your health is top priority. No matter what you decide to do I'm behind you 100 percent. so, you do what you feel you are able to do.
If for some reason you can't do the Muddy Buddy I'm still going to see if I can race solo. I can't imagine it would be a big deal at all. Please make sure you take care of yourself.

I'm ready Paul. I certainly don't plan on taking the course by storm, but I'm sure we will all be packing our smiles and positive attitudes as we wait the start of the race. Definately good times ahead!

Dave, Hope you're not to bummed out watching the Pittsburgh race. Better times will be here shortly. 5 days from now the six of us will be arriving at WDW and checking in at the Muddy Buddy. Are you doing a segment about this? John & Kevin will be there, and it's turned into a pretty big event. Just curious. Take care of that back. See you soon. :thumbsup2

Hey Paul, thanks for thinking of me. I'm still in Pittsburgh, I could hear the runners going by this morning, and in all honesty I was a little bummed. My back is feeling better, thanks to the muscle relaxants. However, I posted this on FB, I decided it would be better to save myself for the Muddy Buddy. The Pittsburgh half was important to me but only me. The Muddy Buddy has become a bigger event, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. There are all you 5 running with me, everyone that is coming to cheer, all the people that have donated, and John & Kevin will be there for some mysterious purpose. So I didn't want to blow my chance of being a part of it.
Yes, I'm bringing my recorder and plan on doing a segment on the race. I want to get it edited so Pete can play it on the show they record on the cruise. I thought it would be great for them to get reactions from everyone while they're sitting there. All of the Muddy Buddies will be there, the cheering section, etc. I can't guarantee Pete will use it, but I plan on getting it to him.

Dave, my oldest niece has her last local crew race today, so Mom and I had to get out of town early so we didn't get trapped by the street closures. We were out by 7 am and headed north to Moraine State Park. Had breakfast in Wexford at Eat N Park. I'm glad you are feeling better. Better living through chemistry, I always say. See you next weekend.

Hows the training going peeps? I slacked this weekend, didn't get anything in on Friday, but meeting DIS'ers was a much better replacement. Didn't feel well all day Satuday so I wasn't able to get in a morning run at the hotel. Got home form Indy around 8 and managed to sneak in a 3 mile run and 3 mile bike. Felt great, those days off are behind me now :)
I only have 3 more days of working out and preparing until I call it quits and start the pre-race cool down.
Paul, Should we do a little jog Friday night or when we get there Saturday morning to loos'en up?
Have we decided if we are waiting at the mud for the rest of the crew? I'll bring the board games :rotfl2:

So what is the best way to prep for this race during the final week? You want to make sure you give your muscles time to heal up. For a marathon, you go through this whole taper process. This race isn't that long, so you don't need a big taper, but you should give your legs some time to recover. You can bike as much as you want because that is not as hard on your legs. You don't have all the pounding and breaking down of muscles as you do with running.
My plan is to run 3 days this week, and do a day of cross-training. Here's my plan: Monday (run), Tuesday (run), Wednesday (cross-train; bike), Thursday (run), Friday (fly - travel to Orlando, no running), Saturday (race). So I'll have one full day off before the race on Saturday.
Mouse Skywalker
05-04-2009, 08:27 AM
And what should we eat the night before and the morning of?Again, this isn't a really long race - so you don't need to do the whole carboloading thing that you might do for a marathon. I think a normal dinner would be fine the night before. You might want to go easy and not eat a big steak or something, but a decent meal that will settle on your stomach well should be fine.
The morning of the race is a little more tricky. I need to eat before I run. I usually have an energy bar (Powerbar w/ protein) an hour before I run, and that will be good for me - some people also swear by a bagel with peanut butter. Again, you want something that is easy to digest, but also has a little protein to hold you over. Try to eat at least an hour before the race to give your stomach time to settle.

An important pre-race strategy: I forgot to say this, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate... make sure you drink lots of water before the race. Especially make sure you don't dehydrate yourself the day before. If you're on the plane, drink water. If you're in the parks on Friday, try not to be on your feet all day, and doubly make sure you hydrate.

Thanks for this reminder Dave. It's easy to forget; especially getting excited after just arriving to the Happiest Place on Earth!
I don't plan on visiting any parks other than WWoS to pick up our packet info. We are just going to be hanging around Kidani Village, grabbing a bite to eat and touring the resort.
I'm also planning on getting my race materials as ready as possible for the next day. The last thing I want to do at 4:00AM in the morning is put my race bib on my shirt and put my timer chip on my shoe lace. Basically, just throw my stuff on and head out the door.

When we pick up our packets on Friday night, do you think that anything will be available to catch a glimpse of? Perhaps layout of the mud pit? I think Anna would like to scope the layout of the cheering stands. I'd like to have as much time to worry about whatever obstacle we can see.

I bet there will be some stuff set up for the race by Friday (depending on what time you go to packet pickup). I'm not expecting stands for cheering though. The only race I've seen stands set up is the marathon, and they charge people to sit in them.

I did the following:
1.25 mile bike
1.25 mile run
1.25 mile bike
1.25 mile run
1.25 mile bike
0.5 mile walk
I felt good, but no matter how often I do this that first 1.25 mile run is hard. The second one is much easier. Why is this? I stretch and bike before I run so I don't understand.
Anyway, I feel good, and that is my last hard workout before the race. I mowed two lawns on Sunday, worked in the yard moving dirt yesterday and building a garden box. Thursday, I plan to mow again before the trip becuase Indiana grass grows like wildfire just as ADP said.
I am so excited for this race, I already have butterflies! :thumbsup2
Todd, my bro got the bike. I will PM you the link to it.
I think we can decide on our racing strategy when we get down there if you are okay with that.
Have a great day all!

I've been doing pretty much the same thing, except switching the running and biking. The first run isn't bad, the second is better, but the third one is the one that kills me.
Mowed my lawn on Saturday. Gonna mow mom's on Wednesday and mine again before bed on Thursday evening. (Bedtime on Thurs is around 9pm~getting up at 4 to be ready for the flight.)
Aaron, sorry I missed your call last night. I didn't even hear the phone ringing. Do you have time to chat today? I don't have a whole lot going on at work today, and I can give you a call anytime.
You bet Dave. I'll give you a call around lunchtime.

You're going to have to go to Wal-Mart without me. By the time I get to the airport, get my luggage, pick up my rental car and check in to my resort it will be late. With us having to get up so very early in the morning, the last thing we should do after traveling all day is stay up late at Wally world. If you can go during the day that would be best. Getting to WWoS by 8:00 was pushing it anyway. This makes it less stressful. We'll just check in for the race Saturday morning.

I haven't run since we've been home. To be honest if I had another race on the schedule other than the 2010 Muddy Buddy it would make me run more often, or at least feel like I should.
I've actually considered running the Expedition Everest Challenge 5K and scavenger hunt in late September. I love the Animal Kingdom and running in the park appeals to me a lot. It will really depend on work, family and other commitments.

It will really depend on work, family and other commitments.I always try to have a race I'm training for. My big race now is the Baltimore Marathon in October. Other races I have planned, are just "training runs" on the way to the Baltimore Marathon.
Aaron, you should find some local 5ks to run too to keep you motivated. Maybe you could meet up with Chris or even Don for a race. I've heard really good things about the Indy Mini Marathon (it's a half marathon and there's a 5k with it too), but I guess that's in early May so it won't help you now.
I ran the Expedition Everest Challenge last year (that's the picture of me in the Indy outfit). It was a blast. I really loved it. You can do it individually or in teams of 2. I did it by myself last year, and met up with some of my WISH friends. I said I thought it would be fun to do it with Maggie (because the minimum age is 11). The only thing holding me off signing up for it is the DL half marathon over Labor Day. I'm very curious what the DIS has planned for that weekend, and I'd like to go out for it.

Thanks guys! I may look into the local 5Ks. You guys probably heard me mention about 50 times that I ran a 5K locally last year. Unfortunately, it's also in May. It was the same weekend as the Muddy Buddy. If they are on different weekends next year I'll probably plan on doing it.
I think most local communities offer 5K events throughout the year; except during the winter months (in the midwest and northeast).

Did you have a rope on your belt?It was an actual whip I had, and I had a satchel too (which became very irritating by the end of the 5k). The photo was actually taken by official Disney media, and I was in a PR photo. They caught me in a video too. I'll see if I can dig it up.
Here it is, I'm about 12 seconds in. You get the full view of my costume.

It's long enough that you really need to train, and you feel that you accomplished something by finishing it. However, it doesn't break down your body or require as much training time as a full marathon does. I know of a half marathon in January that some people may be running... ;)

I don't know why I popped into this thread today, since I've never read it before, but I had to laugh because I just registered for the Baltimore Marathon this weekend.
Funny, that you are training for it too!
I've never run Baltimore but I've heard good things about this race. My friend is running Baltimore as her first marathon and she's petrified and excited about it all at the same time. When I was rejected from the NYC lottery I decided to join her in Baltimore.
I'd also like to second your comments that the 1/2 is the perfect distance. I still do marathons but I really, really love the half.
Good luck with the training plans, everybody!

I've started more intense training this past week. I did a core workout today that kicked my behind "8 ways to Sunday". I'm doing the core workouts at home since I don't need to be at the gym for it.
Kim and I went for a long, fast-paced walk tonight; which was really nice because we rarely have a chance to exercise together.
Gym workouts will be Tuesday and Thursday this week with 2 mile runs in between days.

Awesome Aaron! I've been struggling this week. I did a 10 mile bike ride yesterday, but have been scared to run since Weds. I'm going to run 3 miles tomorrow and see how it goes and get back to some solid workouts.
What are you doing for core work? A good strong core is key to every other exercise. When you hit the gym try to find a way to do more dumbbells and free weights.

Good Morning Buddies of Mud: I just wanted to jump in to say I've had a great week of exercise so far with out even running a step. I decided to give my shin/lower leg a lot of rest to heal up. So I've retreated to aqua-jogging in the pool. I call it swogging (for swim/jog), and also because it sounds kind of "pirate-y" pirate: . I swogged for 30 min M,T, and W, and yesterday I rode the exercise bike for 30 min for a change of pace. :thumbsup2 Hope everyone's doing well.

:lmao: I like it Dave. Swogging sounds fun and easy on the joints. All you need is an eye patch and bandana and you're all set.
I've been hitting the gym quite a bit lately. I'm really seeing the results in my physical appearance and even how I feel. It's amazing what 2 or 3, 90 minute workouts can do. I've also got into the habit of doing push-ups and ab work during my lunch hour at work. It's good to get some exercise each day.
