I've read several posts of vistors hearing about other vistors seeing snakes in thier resort rooms.. I would think this is more likly for anyone who's door opens outside and most likly on the 1st floor... anyone have any actual real life encounters...not just heresay? Not that I doubt anyone, just the possibility of this feaks me out so bad, I guess I just want to see with my own eyes...a photo or something.. I DONT want to see one in my room:scared1:

I did actually see photos from the Contemporary 4 th floor.A little girl was in the bed oppositethe window and say something moving above the curtains. It was a large black snake and her nest with eggs.It was real and the hotel staff came in and removed it.She was upgraded to concierge..I also saw snakes outside the Beach Club and a worker there said if you are on the main floor they will come in if you leave the door open. Its not unusual but it is Florida.I also saw one outside my Grandmas condo in the grass next to the sidewalk...no water in sight and there he was slithering across the lawn..:scared1:

Yep, I saw those photos too. It was some time last year that they were posted...I think it was right before our trip in September.

My mother saw a HUGE snake at CBR. It was on the 1st floor walkway (luckily we were on the 2nd floor). She said it was a moccasin (and we live in LA...see plenty of them...so she should know). She went into the room and called the front desk. They sent someone right away who caught it and put in a box and took it away. It could have very easily gotten into a 1st floor room if the door was open.
We are very used to this at home, so we know not to leave the door open. I can imagine people coming from other places may not be used to dealing with this and not even think about it.
Last year at POR, I was walking around the resort one evening and I saw some young kids playing on the cypress knees at the edge of the river. To me, that is just downright dangerous. First of all, if you fell on one it could cause serious injury. Secondly, I know that snakes love hiding in those sorts of spots. Just not a sensible thing to do. When I said something to them, the parents pretty much told me to mind my own business...which maybe I should have been doing anyway.
Not just in their rooms, but people need to pay attention to where they are walking at WDW, too. Especially walkways near bushes and/or water.

I don't like snakes either. I hate to say it, but I also saw the thread with the pictures of the snake and her eggs at the Contemporary. :scared1: There was also a string at one point about snake sitings in general. It may have been on the Unplugged Board but it was a few months back. The good news is, I have been to Disney at least 10 visits and the only time I ever saw a snake was on the side of the trail to Rafiki's Planet Watch at Animal Kingdom. It was in the woods to the side of the path.

I just find it hard to believe a snake would slither across a concrete sidewalk to get into a room at the All Star resorts (not sure, but Pop is probably the same way) My brother and my cousin have lived in Africa, where snakes getting into houses is a constant issue since many of them are very poisonous -- but the houses that have no grass around them don't usually have a problem.
Wouldn't it be the same at all resorts that have doors opening to the outside?

Being from southern Louisiana which has basically the same climate and land type (swampy) as WDW (it is built on swamp) I am surprised that snakes are NOT more of a problem as they are. Although I have to say a snake in a room on the 4th floor of the Contemporary is a little surprising! The thing is with all of the water around the WDW property I would say a rather large percentage of the snakes are probably water mocassins which are bad dudes! So be careful! And don't let your kids or adults play in the lakes! There is a reason they have signs that say No Swimming!

Also, isn't there a good chance there are alligators in the river:confused3 I remember seeing a video on youtube of an alligator (it was a small one) in the water at splash mountain. That was a little freaky.

We saw one go into the airconditioning unit at POFQ when we were walking by (you know, the one under the window??) There was no one in the room, and we informed the front desk. IDK if it could get into the room through the air conditioner??:confused3

Keep your kids away from the landscaping as well. My friend's daughter was bitten by a snake at CBR. My cousin is an ER doctor in Ft Walton and they see lots of bites from pymgy rattlers who love to hide in mulch!!

Last May at CBR, we were walking back up to our second floor room and there was a huge black snake just kind of haning out on the walkway in front of some bushes slithering around, but not going any where. A family with a little boy was watching it and the little boy(3-4 maybe) was crying and trying to get a way while dad was saying just look at it, it wont hurt you, while his mom was telling his dad to knock it off, he's scared.
It was pretty creepy. You just dont think of stuff like that when you live in upstate NY. The only time you see that stuff is at a wild animal park or zoo.
I mentioned it to someone and they said it was probably a racer. But it sure was ugly.
The rest of the trip, I kept occasionally looking down when I was walking....

When we were getting off the bus at one of the parks last month, a bus driver yelled out to somebody taking a short cut through the bushes "don't go through the bushes -- This is Florida -- there could be snakes in the bushes!" Now, not being from somewhere that has poisonous snakes, I don't know if snakes could be in the bushes on the medians, but it sure made me think twice about taking short cuts.

We stayed at Pop in September of last year. While DD10 was in the Hippy Dippy pool a lifeguard spotted a SNAKE! Everyone was directed to the opposite side of the pool. The lifeguard netted it and let it loose in a grassy area. She said it doesn't happen very often, but it does happen. Hey, it's FLORIDA. They have all kinds of creepy crawlies.
So yes, they WILL slither across the concrete...I was there! Just don't know about going into a room, but I wouldn't say it wouldn't happen.

Those snakes must be pretty d#*@ scared! :lmao: I grew up in the south, too. That does nothing to change the fact that I hate snakes. I, too, ran around barefoot outside ALL the time as a kid. Saw more snakes than I can count. Actually came about an inch from stepping on one as a kid...of course, no shoes on! I've never recovered from that close call! :rotfl: I don't even like a dead snake! :rotfl2:

There are usually several threads starting this time of year about snake sitings. In the 8 trips I hav emade art various times of year, I have NEVER seen a snake, except in the exhibit at AK. There is or was a Python that a local woman found in her yard and AK had it on display, don't know if it is still there. It was one of the many that eople buy as pets and don't realize how large they get, so they dump them and there is a huge popultion new the Everglades, they are now in competition with the gators and I don't mean the FL Gators either.
Many people have reported seeing them in the lazy river areas of the 2 water parks, might just have to reconsider going there.
I too saw the pictures of the one at CR. I will go look for the thread. Here is a link to her blog, about 3/4 of the way down the page are the pictures, you can't see it really well, but you know it is there.

Why did i read this? And reading various snake sighting at CBR - doing a split stay at Pop and CBR. now am very nervous. Don't want to see any harmless black snakes, and am terrified of finding anything venomous. Not sure how I will sleep at night when there!
So, what happens if encounter a venoumous snake and are bitten? What do you do? Call 911, call the front desk? Will you get to the hospital in time to be okay? How much window of time is there to get treatment? Worried more so about having little kids and how they'd be affected by it and getting them treated in time.

Interesting thread... never thought about this being from Michigan
We were in the world last year during Huricane Fay.... and on one night when it was raining rather hard... the bus driver had told us to be careful and there may be water mocasions slithering around.
Didn't really think much of it.
Our last trip we saw a small 3 inch lizard outside of our hotel and I thought it was cool since I never see anything like that here :-p

We saw a fairly large snake at Pop last August...scary! And my son idolizes any animal and he kept talking about how beautiful it was...gross! My future zoologist, he says. So then he reminded me how any animal is important to us...yeah, but I don't want it at Disney :scared1:

I am sure its long gone by now, but when we stayed at POFQ we always saw a snake in the river by the boat dock. When you board the boat to head to Downtown Disney, if you looked down on the dock there was a really large snake (yellowish color with spots looked more like a python) for many many many years. Talking with the boat driver he stated at the time the snake had been there for about 7 years and he had the opportunity to watch it grow. I would probably say the snake was a good 5 feet long, it was really large...

Guys... snakes are nothing more than lizards without legs. If you can find them in trees, of course you can get them in your room... just like a mosquito, toad, or even a little gator (not that that's likely) .. perhaps all 3 hunting each other? :thumbsup2
OP... I doubt very much if you'll get anyone with a pic of a snake in their Disney room unless it's Kaa or Sir Hiss... or unless their the type who'd be looking to Disney for full reimbursement of their vacation. I'd be out of there chasing down housekeeping to help me shoo the critter out the door.

Snakes I can handle. SPIDERS I can't!
I saw plenty of snakes growing up in Michigan. The highlight of one summer was seeing a real live Mississauga rattler on our front lawn. I've always liked snakes.
As I've said, spiders are my thing. I once opened up a bag of grapes and a large spider crawled out - after I finally killed the thing I noticed an hourglass on its belly. :scared1: I now soak all of our grapes in a large bowl of water for a half hour before I open the package!

I've been to Disney about 15 times, and I've never seen a snake there. I live on a lake bordering the Everglades and I've never seen an alligator or a snake around here. I wouldn't be too worried... really. Just use common sense: keep your door closed and avoid the bushes, yadda yadda.

A couple of days later we saw another one close by just making its way accross the 18th fairway of the golf course.

gosh! I get chills up my spine over this. I dont know what it is about snakes!!! I grew up in the fields of North Carolina and saw more snakes and snake bites then I'd ever care to for the rest of my life I know they are SUPPOSE to be more scared of you then you are of them, but #1 - I doubt it and #2 with MY luck, I'd get the renagade snake trying to impress some girl snake who would get the thrill out of showing me who's the bigger scairdy cat.. me thats who. BTW, I called POP and told them I don't care what room or what view, I want on the highest floor (I didn't tell them about the snake thoughts though, I do have some dignty to try & retain.)
I don't want to eridicate the earth of snakes or anything like that, I just don't want to worry about them in my ROOM. I'll stay out of thier nest/den whatever thier house is called, and they stay out of my room and we can all co-exist just fine. I really do think I'd faint if I pulled back the covers to see a snake in my bed though.

I hate, hate, hate snakes, so of course, I'm cursed by them. :rotfl:
We have them all the time in our house. And no we don't live near a swamp or in the south or anything like that. We live in a house halfway up a hill near the woods in Massachusetts. We find tiny ones, medium ones, and lots of skins. The last skin was about 4 ft long. We've had them in our basement shower, in the dryer and in the rafters. We've had garter snakes, black racers and a copperhead :scared1: in our basement. Luckily we didn't know it was a copperhead until after I'd had my DS (13) carry it and the box is was hiding in outside and dump it out in the woods. :rolleyes1 . Or course since we had never seen a snake like it before we decided to look it up. Did you know copperheads are extremely rare and endangered and almost never seen in MA? Oh, and poisonous. yeah that. I do now.
Now because I am so cursed, I will be the guest who has the snake in the bed and the one that lays eggs in the bed, too.:lmao:

We have seen them a few times at Disney. Once dd saw one (long, black one) on the path at Tom Sawyer's Island on the way back to the raft. DH and I panicked and almost left the kids!
Second time DH saw one on the loose at the Boneyard in AK. CM's had the infamous "burlap bags" trying to catch it. We left AK immediately.
Third time DH and I saw it from a distance. We were sitting on our balcony at BC and saw a long, black snake slithering in the area just past the bushes that separate the patios from the grassy courtyard area near the volleyball courts.
We used to ask for a 1st floor room at YC - that cured us. Of course when we went in February what do you think we got - a first floor room at the GF. I never went outside without checking first, and didn't go out when it was dark AT ALL!
If we ever saw one in our room I don't know who would drop dead first - me or DH.

I saw a small snake in my backyard one time a few years ago -- yds was 2 and ods was 5.. I DID LEAVE THEM, got to the patio, turned around and had to go BACK to get them. --they were just standing there crying -- I felt terrible about it (leaving them) but I really could't help it -- I just get so panicky when I see snakes.

It wasn't until my eight trip to wdw last year that i saw a snake there!
At SSR I saw a teeny tiny black snake (about 6 inches long) which i actually thought was a twig or a pencil, until it wriggled off the path and into the bushes!
Then walking back from DTD to SSR one evening we saw a group of people stood around staring at something, near the Marketplace bus stop, it was a 2/3 ft yellow-ish snake, completely still.. and a tweenage boy was trying to jump on it?! His parents weren't stopping him.. I can't say I like snakes but in this instance I actually felt sorry for the animal and angry at the boy!! :sad2:
SSR also has some big dragonflies and tree frogs around the resort too... none of them worried me - and I'm from the UK where we barely have any native wildlife like that!

Hmmm...I didn't really think to much of it, I saw two different snakes while we stayed at SSR last October. One was between Congress Park and the water, the other was on a path to Grandstand from the main building. I grew up an hour north of Toronto and there are lots of snakes there... Not saying Im a fan of them, but I don't freak out over them...I freak out about spiders!!!

Holy Crap!! That is the Funniest Thing I have read in a long time!!:rotfl2: :lmao: those are my sentiments exactly! You are a woman who shares my thoughts!! :worship: THanks for the laugh!! 2nd- if it was in my room--I, I, don't know what the hell would compansate me! I can tell you DH would freak out-we stayed in a cabin @ the beach one time- he was up ALL night killing the ants & bugs...:rotfl2: (not to mentionmy kids reaction from me screaming my head off!!)

Geeze i was so excited to be staying a week in the new pirate rooms at CBR but now I am seriously thinking of changing. I cannot imagine seeing a snake. I freak just seeing spiders. I make my kids take care of the creepy crawlies for me at home. They make fun of me for that...I cannot imagine how bad it would be if they saw my reation to a snake in my bed. I should have never read this thread but at the same time I am glad I did. My lovely DH is just like yours! Part of the reason I decided not to stay @ POR was b/c of al lthe lush landscaping and the thought (and posts I've read) of snakes there (although I've read of some @ BC too :scared1:).
Just the other day, after a strong line of storms went thru us, DH found a 10-12" grass snake in the back yard. He wanted the kids to come and see it, I said no, and told him to throw it over our fence. I could tell by the look on his face he wanted to get it and throw it at me. So when he went outside, I closed the door and locked him out! :rotfl: Well then, he picked it up and was bringing it to the window, and the kids were screaming, etc :rotfl2: Finally, he threw it over the fence! Geesh, if he knew I was on here reading and writing about this, he would definitely bring some fake ones with him on the trip.

It might seem strange but I wouldn't be able to go back into the room. I have an anxiety disorder and snakes are a huge fear of mine so I would definitely have a major panic attack if one was in my room or my bed. and even once I'd taken my medicine and calmed down the irrationalness to me I'd have to change rooms. I know people probably think that is ridiculous but if I didn't I'd have random anxiety attacks in the room even if I wasn't thinking about it. My subconscienouce does that to me! :(
I never just whip off all the blankets, I just pull down the top and climb all the way in. What if you didn't check and it was curled up in the bottom of the bed?! Or what if it came in while you were asleep and you woke up with it in the bed next to you?!
Oh god, I'm going to be obsessed with checking everything for snakes now.

This is a bit different in nature...but...I used to work at a big box retail store in management that was next to a pet store. Well, the pet store lost :confused3 some baby snakes....huuummmmmm. A couple of days later a very calm customer calls managment over to the handbags. Not me. She opened the handbag right off of the shelf and there one was curled up soooo sweet and innocent inside. The other manager about fainted...of all the things you have to deal with in retail management (some really CRAZY stuff)that was a new one for us.
Alright I'm good with that, thanks for taking one for the team ;)

I am actually glad I read this thread because for nearly 18 years I thought dh and I were the ONLY people to ever have a snake in their room at Disney.
1991 - 1st floor room at CBR - smallish black snake. I patiently sat up on the sink area while waiting for staff to come . It was around 11 or 12am so it took a while but a man showed up with a big snake catching noose thing on a stick, but didn't need it, he picked up the snake with his hand and bagged it up. It made me wonder just how big the snakes get that this guy was carrying that noose thing and had assumed he would need it.
sounds like more than a few CBR snake stories though.

Just a little FYI for all, no snakes are "poisonous" If you eat them, you will not die from the poison in their bodies. SO the term is incorrect.
Many many snakes are "venomous" as they inject venom into their victims when they bite.
Just had to make that distinction. It's the environmentalist in me. Go educate someone today ;)

We just returned from 7 nights - 5 at Pop, 1 ASMovies and 1 at CBR - which is the one resort I was most worried about encountering a snake!
Thankfully, we saw NONE! But I was thrilled with the room they gave us at CBR - second floor facing the parking lot.
Kept checking the mulch everywhere we went, resorts/parks, like when we'd sit down on a ledge or something and there was a garden behind us. I DID get really nervous when my son at CBR decided to chase a bird into some bushes!
But no snakes. Though, I did have a duck fly into the back of my head while visiting the Poly (and I screamed as if I had seen a snake, LOL!) While sitting at outdoor tables at CBR and at Pop we had bunnies and ducks join us under the table (one duck who decided that was an appropriate spot to take a poop), but thankfully NOOOOO snakes - this trip at least! Now to worry about encountering any in November!

How soon can you make your room requests? With this continued Snake talk I am calling as soon as I can and requesting an upper floor room, even though I am terrified of heights and have very irrational fears about my children by railings of anything over 1 story. I will deal with the heights. Plus I figure if a snake wants to make the effort and climb more than one floor and get into my room and make its home.. I will take the cue and sleep in the van in the middle of the parking lot so I can see the snakes coming over the concrete.

We just returned from CSR and saw 3 snakes on 3 separate occasions. The first was at the bottom of the stairs when we came out of our room and headed down the steps. He was more afraid of us than we were of him. He was thin and about 2 feet long. The second snake was crossing the bridge going towards El Centro.... he was bigger and a black snake typical of the area. He made a quick escape over the bridge and was gone. Then my 14 year old was looing for a lizard and reached in to pick up what I thought was a little lizard and out he comes with a snake...... again, small, thin Garter snake. He was docile and just let us take a picture or 2 before my son let him go on his way.
A couple years ago, there was a very large black snake outside of our first floor POR room that my husband and oldest son still talk about.

Never have been worried about snakes, but my DW and DD's would pass out if we had one in our room. Going to the world in June for the 4th time and will be staying at CBR, will definitely keep an eye out! Most interesting animal I've seen at a Disney resort was in 07 when we stayed at POR. On the last day of the trip, we left our room early in the morning to walk to Riverside Mill when DW stopped and told me to look at what she first thought was a large cat walking along the path. When I glanced up at it, it didn’t look like a domestic cat, it looked like either a Bob Cat or Lynx, not sure which they have in FL. It was walking around like it owned the place. I followed it to take pictures, and it nonchalantly walked into the foliage. Maybe Disney brought it in to eat all the snakes!

I will GLADLY take the long way from now on!!!:scared1:

We are in southeastern M.A. and seriously hope we are NOT neighbors! We were outside last spring doing yardwork and my husband calmly said to me "walk away".... so I did..of course yelling "why, why"..then I just HAD to look! Had to look! I saw him pick up the snake and fling it into the woods. I started screaming like a ninny...as if someone with a hachet was cutting us into peices! When my husband was through laughing he kept saying... "it was just a little longer than an earth worm"... :rolleyes1
I still have not gone out to that spot of the yard since last May.
I also keep telling him we can't retire to Florida and live there because there are snakes there:scared:

OK~ Florida is the swamps guys... swamps have snakes, gators and all kinds of creepy crawly things :lmao:
There are 44 different type of snakes native to Florida. There are only 6 poisonious snakes native to Florida...
They are
1. pygmy rattlesnake
2. eatern diamondback
3. timber rattlesnake
4. Cottonmouth
5. copperhead
6. coral snake
out of those the copperhead and coral snake or mostly found in or near water.
The most common snake in Florida is a solid black snake called the black racer. The only one in danger of a black racer is Mickey as they eat mice :rotfl:
IF by chance you see one, stay away from it, dont poke it with a stick or make any snake mad. All snakes will bite and all snake bites hurt ... I have been bitten by ball pythons and it swelled my hand up for a week!
To be honest ~ I would rather see a snake than a rat ANY DAY in a resort :lmao: rats and mice carry 1,000s of diseases and snakes don't :thumbsup2 snakes eat mice and rats :thumbsup2
If you are REALLY worried about poisonious snakes at Disney, I suggest googling each of the snakes I listed above and become familiar with them. I won't post pics HERE as not to scare anyone LOL

long. I hate snakes!!!Hate them!!! Loathe them!!! I ran into my house and got my 11 yr old son and a hammer. What the hell was I thinking? Without going into all the gory details. The snake is now at rest. When my husband came home, I showed him. He said, "My God, dear, you just killed a copperhead. With a hammer! They jump, you know." We also found a skin in our garage. I don't even want to know where the rest of it is.... So I will be pulling back the covers, lifting up the pillows, looking at the curtains, staying out of the mulch, staying out of the bushes, and staying away from the waters of WDW when we go.:scared1:

That is so funny! A hammer!:lmao: It reminds me of when I was 15 & my mom tried to kill a rattler with a hot pot of coffee! :rotfl2:
We live in the Deep South on a 19 acre country estate with a large pond & a creek bordering the property. Needless to say, we get LOTS of snakes around the house.
Well, one day my mom opens up the kitchen door to the patio & she sees a rattlesnake right in front of the door. So what does she do? She grabs the nearest thing - a pot of hot coffee & throws it on the snake & then slams the door!
She yells for me to come & tells me what she'd done & asks me to get the swingblade & go kill it (lucky me, I was the only kid who wasn't afraid to try killing the snakes). I was laughing so hard. "Great, Mom, now you've made it angry!" When I went around to kill it, though, it was nowhere to be found.
Funny thing is later that day we hear a truck screech to a halt on the road in front of our house & then back up. This happened several times. When we went to investigate, our neighbor gets out of his pickup & bends over to pick up this 6' rattlesnake & says, "I saw it come onto the highway from your yard & ran it over a few times. It's dead now!" Mom was so happy. Until he said, "Watch out, though. These guys always travel in pairs. You've got another one somewhere.":rotfl: You should have seen my mom's face. Good news - I killed the 2nd one about a week later. This time I got it with a machete.

This is one of the most disturbing threads I've read on the Dis! :scared1:
The only wild snake we ever saw at WDW was a dead snake. It was on a sidewalk at POFQ. Maybe one of those golf carts ran over it? I hope I never see a snake there again--dead or alive!

I've seen several snakes at WDW - more there than anyplace else in my life. One 5 footer was in the pool at WL, 1 on the sidewalk on the boat rental path - twice. One at EPCOT crossing the sidewalk in the Great Britain area, one in the lake between Future World and World Showcase. I hate snakes, they make me feel bad. Several years ago there were lots of posts of snakes getting in the rooms at the BC because patio doors were being left open. I don't like the way housekeeping props doors open while cleaning them. Anything could crawl in there when they aren't looking:scared:. I'm going to have bad dreams tonight.

*Respectfully snipped by me*
I can vouch for that. We also saw a long black snack slithering through the pool at WL in 2006. I wondered why everything went quiet and the lifeguard started ordering everyone out of pool. He then made his way under the bridge toward the geyser. The snake, not the lifeguard.

My son was down for Disney college last fall and he spun the cap off his water bottle and he immediatley went to pick up. As he bent down he noticed it fell right on a snakes head. He said it looked like a snake with a little hat before the thing took off through the grass. :)
I remember visiting my aunt in Clearwater maybe 35 years ago when Florida was a lot more wild and less developed. Stupid...stupid...stupid me...
I have been so excited about my pirate room at CBR - what was I thinking. I got a waterview room - WHY to be closer to the snakes!!!
Why did I read this post - over 20 times to WDW and I have never seen a snake!! Now I feel cursed.
When I was about 8 years old I was in Louisiana walking through a cow pasture with my grandma and her dogs were sniffing out a snake and she was looking for it. I was about to step over a cow pie when a head popped out of it. I screamed jumped 8 feet in the air and ran. My crazy Grandma came over and beat it with a large object and picked it up to ask me if I wanted to take it home. It was about a 4 foot cottonmouth.
I HATE snakes!!
LY I was walking though our living room with my dd -3 and I see a snake over by the wall. I scream, tried to remember to grab the baby and run - my husband peaks around the door with me to look at it - walked out there and picked it up be the neck only to laugh and bring it to me like it was alive - it was plastic. I had bought them for my kids survivor party and they had given it to the baby to play with. She had no idea why mommy was so hysterical. Now the snake "hides" all over the house...

My DW is terrified of snakes, she can't even watch them on tv. We don't have many in the UK I think only 2 or 3 types and only one of them is mildly venomous. She will completely freak out if she even sees one in the distance never mind in our room. :scared::scared1::scared::scared1:

I walk in to use the room, and seen it laying there, thought who left is toy snake in here, till it move, then I jump, and started to exit the room, then I remember I have the camera in my hand, went back took the pic, and out the door I went, found 2 CM in a golf cart, they walk in and one I show the snake said "it's a toy" till it move again, and he was out the door faster then I was, took them about 1/2 hour to remove it, I sure didn't sleep good that night, it was my last night so I didn't ask to change rooms, just made sure to check everything I pick up.
Funny thing is when I was in grade school I had a pet snake in my bedroom, play with it all the time, the a few years ago I came across a rattlesnake, we were about 2 feet apart and it was very BIG, from then on I hate snakes

If we're staying in a blacony room do we still need to keep the balcony door closed? Can they get in that way too? :confused3
You would be fine as long as no tree limbs were laying against your balcony. They can't climb walls very well in Florida. Very few snakes in the world could climb a wall or jump. Whoops! Did I say jump?
Why am I enjoying this?

This is a sick, sick thread. Why don't I unsubscribe? Everytime I see that snake on that bathroom floor, my skin crawls. When I was a kid, my grandmother lived at the foot of a mountain in Virginia. Rattlesnakes would get in her hen house and look for eggs. She would go in there with a hoe and chop it in half. She was a hearty woman. :worship: Made of something stronger than I am.

Here's a nice link for those of you who are worried. There are a few pictures, but just for information purposes. I understand that some of you don't care if it's venomous or not, but if you can arm yourself with a little information it may put your mind more at ease if you would happen to see something.

I checked out the original pictures of the snake in the Contemporary. Admittedly they are not wonderful but if someone showed me them and didn't tell me about the snake - I would not be able to see it - even in the pic where the maintenance guy is supposed to be carrying it.
I'm not saying it was never there but it just seems odd. Also, on the blog that has the pics, the blogger is saying that she is trying to help the family "get something out of Disney".
If it's true that the snake was found on the fourth floor, then it is worrying. I've never seen a snake at WDW but I've always requested not to have a ground floor room, because I don't want to see one.

DBF's mom found a snake in their garden, twice this week!! in England! just grass snakes.. they are thin & two/three foot long, nothing to worry about, but ... aaahhhh!
so, as there's now a chance to see one at home, i'd rather be in wdw with a disney snake ;)

My dad was a WDW cast member in the 70's. He worked in Maintenance. One of his favorite stories to tell is of a woman who "streaked" the beach at the Contemporary! She was in one of the garden wing rooms, ground floor and was apparently changing clothes or getting ready to take a shower when she spotted a snake in the room. Well, she ran out of the room nude and streaked the beach, screaming! ROFL! Several cast members chased her down with towels to cover her. I don't know what ever happened to the snake.
My dad also said that when ever they had to replace the air conditioner filters at the Poly (which were in the ceiling), it was common to find snake skins.

right now if I just hadn't told our kids we were going to Disney in September I would truly cancel. I have never thought of this and I will honestly consider this to be our last trip. No one can even imagine my fears. I don't go in my grass at my house and I have never seen a snake here. I will have that room so torn apart every day and night I won't be able to settle at night. My DH will be so mad at me. I will probably be so hyper focused until we leave that I won't be able to enjoy getting ready to go. As true as I sit here I wish we weren't going and I never thought I would feel like that. I hate snakes so much i won't even go in a pet store for fear of seeing one. I will be afraid everywhere now. I will be freaked out on every ride that they are in it, every room I am in every bathroom. I am so mad now.

I wish you hadn't read this! I am afraid as well. I think most of us are having a little fun with it and it makes me feel a little better. If you read all the posts, some folks have been going to WDW for years and never have seen a snake. I've been there 20 times and yes, I've seen a couple but only at WL and EPCOT WS - an they weren't close. Unsubscribe to this thread and don't read anymore. Don't let it ruin your vacation. If it would make you feel better, take a flashlight with you and look around in your room when you get there. If you have sliding doors, don't leave them open unattended especially on the ground floor and ask your housekeeper not to leave your door propped open while he/she is cleaning. If this were a problem, no one would be staying at WDW. Let me know when you get back - I'll bet you won't see one.

We've seen snakes several times at Pop. Outside thank goodness. The lake is right there. I am not afraid of snakes, but don't want them in the bed, or to be surprised by one. I can't believe all of the people who say they "hate" snakes. I have seen them all of my life, and would not want to kill one. Black plague anyone? It's Florida people...they have palmetto bugs (which are roaches to me!) bigger than those rats at Epcot! I lived in St. Pete, and central Fla is swampy. Enjoy your trip with all God's creatures.

On our first trip, we watched a CM fish a snake out of the water at Splash Mountain, at the bottom of the big drop right near the bridge. At the same time, he also found a ring.
I think he was originally there for the ring, because he handed it up to a woman on the bridge.
Guess the snake was just a bonus.
Also had one slither across my path as I was going from the hot tub to the main pool at OKW. It was a black racer, maybe three feet long.
And last, we saw a black racer at Typhoon Lagoon. My dad went to investigate and was bending over it, I don't know if he thought he would pick it up or what. A CM came running over and kept telling him "sir, sir please back away." It took dad a few moments before he realized what was being said, as he is hard of hearing.
It was interesting and a gaggle of kids had gathered around to watch.
Not scared of them, at least not the black racers. They are harmless.

Ok, so I've been reading this thread and I have to say that I'm shocked that so many people are terrified of snakes. I'm from GA and see them all the time, I guess I'm just used to it. When we find them DH puts them in a pillowcase and takes them away from our house and lets them go. We don't kill them.

Im a LI NY girl and moved down to Central Florida 5 years ago..
We didnt have many snakes on LI, just the green garden snakes, and I never gave a thought to any of the wild life I would encounter moving to Florida.:lmao:
When I lived in NY, my sister lived in Florida for over 40 years, and as a kid and an adult I spent a lot of time visiting her.
Since I have been here I have survived three major hurricanes, (the area I live in had not been hit by a major hurricane in over 50 years ) my luck that I move down right before Charlie and Frances.
We see black racers in our yard and pool very often, at first I was terrified but now knowing that they are harmless I am still terrified. :confused3
I couldnt stand it if I saw a roach in a supermarket or restaurant in NY, now in Florida there are Palmetto bugs the size of my cat. :scared1:
And forget about Lizards, cute little disgusting things that get into my home all the time.
If I see a Lizard or Palmetto bug in my home, no one and I mean no one is going to sleep till either my DS or DH gets it, kills it, or gets it out of my house. :sad2:
Lets not forget about the cute little Armidillos (sp?) that dig up your lawn all year, and the alligators that seem to be walking up to peoples homes all the time lately.
But I have to admit, being close to the mouse house and the beautiful weather and beaches makes those things small in comparison. :yay:
I have been to Disney over 20 times and have never seen a snake, lots of spiders, but no snakes, and we have stayed at a lot of different resorts.
Dont be scared, just be careful and enjoy your wonderful trip.

LOL! You people crak me up. :rotfl: Growing up here I've never been afraid of snakes - I used to run around barefoot as a kid trying to catch black racers at my grandma's house. They're more scared of you anyway... ;)
That's funny. People tell me all the time that snakes are more afraid of me than I am of them, but i highly doubt that! I am TERRIFIED of them. And even if they are more afraid of me than I am of them, so what? That doesn't make me less afraid. This isn't some rational thing that I can think myself through. I appreciate people trying to help me through my fears, but it isn't working for me. :eek:Once in a while I see one outside of my office window and I call maintenance to take care of it. They are around the nursing home where I work, and one got inside the building. I know they are around, but I can not handle the thought of snakes at my happy place.
My brother lives in Homestead and he has those lizards that get into his house sometimes, and once a little snake did. It happened while I was visiting him and he didn't tell me because he was afraid I wouldn't come back to visit him anymore if I knew it. My husband told me about it later.
I need to get over it, or just forget my dream of retiring to WDW.

This is my first post....
I was hoping for a little advice as it appears I'm not the only one to have seen snakes at Disney.
Up until this year, I had seen or been told of snakes in the parks, but had never encountered one at any of the Resorts.
Well, that was until December...
We stayed at Pop Century for two weeks over Christmas and encountered a snake while walking to the parking lot over by the children's play area...70's, I guess? Luckily, it seemed relatively docile and a man who was standing over by it warned us so we quickly walked away. No harm done, right?
Well, we returned for two weeks in March/April and we encountered another snake. Unfortunately, this one was anything but docile. The snake was towards the back of Building 10 and we were walking on one of the concrete paths around midnight when I stopped the stroller and walked away from it momentarily.
When I went turned back to the stroller moments later, I noticed something under it. Sure enough, it was a snake...it had some type of reddish/orange pattern on it...I really didn't stand around long enough to examine it. I'm an animal lover for the most part...with the exception being snakes and a few other reptiles. I've had a lifelong phobia and I just don't like them at all.
Needless to say, I about fainted. There was a group of young guys watching us and they were hysterical. Without thinking, I just took off and left the stroller; however, not really realizing what was going on, my mom went for the stroller (unoccupied, thankfully) and the snake was anything but happy...one too many days at Disney, perhaps? He started chasing us and we used the stroller to try and keep him at bay. Eventually, he went into the grass. Before we left, one was also found in the computer pool.
Once I returned home, I googled it to see if anyone else had similar experiences and this site came up.
Well, if I wasn't ready to turn in my Mickey ears before, reading these posts have just about done it. Snakes in rooms...in the bed!
I really wouldn't have to worry about whether or not it were poisonous because the heart attack would do me in. Trust me, I'd be a "died at Disney" statistic.
We are supposed to return to Disney for two weeks in September, but after reading these posts along with our last experience, I'm thinking it might be best to cancel. We have reserved Pop Century again (reserved before last trip)...we normally go there or CB for longer stays. Does anyone know if Music is having the same issues with snakes? I know it's Florida and they're everywhere, but it's just strange that we've been going for years....never seen any snakes at the resorts....now both times we see them.
I always thought snakes would go out of their way to avoid humans. Apparently not...I don't know what the problem was but this particular snake remained on the concrete path for some time coming our way. Had we not had the stroller someone would have been bitten. There was no amount of "magic" or pixie dust or alcoholic beverage-- for that matter- that would have helped that snake. Seriously, he had a severe case of "road/walk rage."
I just couldn't imagine finding one in the room. We did, however, once find ants in the bed on check-in...up the wall and on the nightstand, but as gross as it was, I wasn't afraid of them. We simply changed rooms.
How are the snakes getting into rooms? Can they get into the room through the AC unit?
Thanks.

OMG I wish I didn't come across this thread. I am so scared of snakes. My brother used to put them in my bed when I was a kid. Long story but I am so scared of them. I was happy to say I have NEVER come across one in all my visits yet. Of course I'm never really "looking" as I don't want to see them. I have never done the Pocohantis (sp) show or been to the Conservation station because I didn't want to see one.

We saw that huge snake by the boat docks at POFQ in 2006 that another poster mentioned, plus numerous alligator sightings on the Sassagoula river on the ride to Downtown Disney...one cool boat captain knew I was a nature buff and would "quietly" point them out to me, most were near the treehouses, which in 2006 were employee housing. Maybe they chased the alligators out for DVC????;)
We also saw 2 snakes in POP in 2005...my friends who at the time lived in Fl. came to see us there and they pointed them out, black racers, no biggie. My DH calls me "the nature spotter" because I have a keen eye in seeing things in nature. We live in southwest suburban Chicago and I've seen coyotes (we actually have them in our backyard weekly, but they keep the bunnies out, so they are welcome!), foxes, deer, all kinds of birds, snakes, turtles, frogs, etc...we used to go to Marco Island all the time and I'd see manatees, alligators, panthers, etc....I LOVE IT!!! Everytime we go to WDW, I see alligators. Does not bother me a bit...my gram used to live along a canal in FL and we'd toss marshmallows at gators, back in the 70's. She'd get so MAD at us!!!
Of course, do I like nature in my home or room? Heck, no!!! Which is why I never get a first-floor room, sweep for bedbugs on arrival, and do not cut through grasses or plantings. As much as I love nature, if a snake was in my bed, I'd turn into Samuel L. Jackson in one fell swoop, wetting my pants whle screaming, "I am so sick of these mother $^##& snakes in my mother $%%$# resort room!":scared1:

I'm afraid of the little garter snakes in our woods! That said, I've been to WDW 25 times and saw a snake once. That one was outside the Trading Post near the marina. A CM came and took it away. That was in 1981. Back then, we were told they relocate snakes....

This is the most traumatizing thing that I have ever read.
I am completely terrified of snakes, and WILL NOT go back to a place that I have seen one, luckily I've only seen a snake in real life like twice. I always freak out when i have to walk in grass, and my eyes are down constantly making sure there aren't any snakes.

I saw a snake in Epcot, on the walkway to the bathroom in Norway by the Viking ship. It was night, dark, and he was slithering verrrry slowly across the path. A few people almost stepped on it, walking without looking down. A man picked it up & put it in the bushes.
I was surprised to see one in such a busy area. Clearly they are everywhere down there!

We saw one at one of the wateparks and my idiot DH touched it just to upset me. It was one of the black ones. Lucky for me there was a CM walking in front of us and she saw it first. She screamed and saved me from doing it and getting embarassed.

Why oh why did I just read all 15 pages of this thread? My skin is crawling. I am so scared of snakes that when I see one on tv I tear up from the fear and curl into the fetal position on the couch. I do have to say that while living in Florida for my CP back in '04 I never once saw a snake.
I understand how they can get into a first floor room, but how do they climb up into the bed? It not like they have feet.

That's what I was wondering. The story about the one at the CR was on the 4th floor :scared1: How the heck did it get there? Plus, it was up on top of the curtains. :confused3

I'm probably one of the few people here who probably WOULDN'T freak out if she found a snake in her room. I'd take pictures first, and then call a CM to remove it if it looked poisonous.
But then again, I had pet snakes as a child up until I went off to college. One of my favorite pet snakes was a beautifully colored corn snake who was descended from snakes that were captured from Florida. I'd want to see if it was one of his relatives.
I'd rather see a snake in my room than a roach, bedbug, or uncleaned toilet.
I'm really jealous of my husband. He went on a company sponsored business trip one year and his business sent him and his coworkers off to a free round of golf at an expensive golf course in Florida. Halfway through the game an alligator came out of water hazard pond and ate their balls. I totally wished I could have been there to see that.
I hate snakes and I live in FL. Why did I open this thread. I will be checking my room every time I enter. I have been to Disney parks at least 20 times and never saw one at any of the parks, but one time someone said they say one by the Jungle Cruise.
As much as I love nature, if a snake was in my bed, I'd turn into Samuel L. Jackson in one fell swoop, wetting my pants whle screaming, "I am so sick of these mother $^##& snakes in my mother $%%$# resort room!":scared1:
this made me :lmao: because that is exactly what I said when we kept getting snakes in our yard,(except instead of resort room it was my mother $@#%# yard)! one even got in our house and I had finally had enough of them. I was so scared that at night I would almost drive up to our front steps to get the kids out of the car then I would wait until my husband came home to move the car back into the driveway. We have since moved from Jurassic Park as I liked to call the old house..Im just waiting for my first snake sighting at the new one.. I know its only a matter of time:scared1:

DD totally saw a snake in the landscaping at WL when we were there in March. She freaked out, but all was well.
Of course, we also saw a bunny that trip, and she was over the moon about that.
As long as I don't see an alligator (and don't get bitten by a snake!), I'm going to say it's all good. It is Florida, after all.

I am not scared of snakes. I have held a few in my time. But, you do have very valid points. It does not matter if it is venomous or not. They both can still bite. And who would want to go on vacation, and find a snake in their room, or bed.. Other than Spacepest. :goodvibes

I know this story about the CR is true because I did see the pictures; however, I thought it was in the garden wing of CR. Are there 4 floors in that wing or just 3? So I was just wondering where the snake actually was:scared:

It's been about 5 yrs or so but we saw some type of dark colored snake slither out of a bush really quickly near the bike/marina rental area. This was during the afternoon. It moved so fast we could not tell what kind it was. Probably a moccasin. They are out there so you do have to be aware and avoid bushes and thick landscaped areas.;)

Water moccasin/cottonmouth snakes are very aggressive and in areas where there is water at the resorts. They have been seen a good distance from the lakes in very manicured landscaping within feet of the sidewalks. Just be careful!

I'm another one who shouldn't have opened this thread. Words can't describe my phobia of the s-word...I can't even say it. It's really ridiculous actually and evidently passed down through generations on my mom's side. We're a funny bunch when they are mentioned. It's not pretty. It's pretty common knowledge how scared I am of them. I actually remember my cousins coming over, when I was a teenager, with a tiny garden snake in a styrofoam cup. They chased me into my room. We lived in one of those big, old Victorian houses and all the bedroom doors were double french doors with the old-fashioned keyholes and big gaps between the bottom of the doors and flooring. I was so sure they were going to stick that *thing* under the doors.
I spent the rest of the evening standing on a chair in my room, staring at the bottom of the doors in terror.
I can't believe I just admitted that...I will be asking for a room upstairs on our next trip.

I was walking into the laundromat at the POFQ around 8pm last June. I was carrying a full laundry basket & there was a small blackish snake in the middle of the sidewalk. :scared1: I NEARLY STEPPED ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I completely FREAKED out & warned everyone in the little laundry room. Some of them kind of looked at me like I was an idiot, but I didn't care!
Now, I'm sitting here reading this thread (WHY?) while DH & I are watching "Seven Deadly Strikes" on Animal Planet. :scared1: This guy is crazy & I have NO IDEA why I'm torturing myself with watching that show & reading this thread! My DH is just as scared as me...while ago we were holding hands & he nearly cut off my circulation as cobras were striking at the host! :headache:
Also...DH just killed a 2' snake in our backyard 2 days ago. (Sorry if that offends anyone, but we don't deal well with serpents!) :rolleyes1 It was hiding in our flower bed - probably doing a great job of keeping nasty bugs & mice away, but we just don't take chances w/ our 2 kiddos playing back there. (That's right, we'll blame it on the kids.)

My oldest DD saw a LARGE black snake near our building, 38, last week at POR. I asked one of the maintenance people about seeing snakes there and he said he sees AT LEAST one a day. Well, there is a lot of water there.
We also saw a gator this trip too. It was in one of the ponds on the left when you pull out of the resort and go to the left. It was NOT SMALL.
Wow

I don't want to alarm you at all, but you should be on the lookout. In all of my trips to Disney and I am a native Floridian that went in 1971 when it opened and have been too many times to even count, I have only had this happen once and it wasn't even to me. So, don't panic, please. Just be on the lookout and if you want a bell captain to check for you.... then do it :) It will make you feel better and worst thing for him, he might get a little giggle out of it :) See, you might spread some magic for him :)

I don't know why I read this whole thread. I can't say I hate snakes because if I see one by accident I'll run screaming like a banshee but then after I gain control of my bodily functions I will go back to look at it unless I feel it is venomous that is. I will even hold one if someone hands one to me. Just the same I just called my DD and told her to request a top floor room at POFQ for our trip in September. I can handle lizards and toads in the room( I had them in the house we rented our last trip down) but snakes in the room? I'd be outside looking in until they took it away.

We just got back a few days ago. Dh and I are both terrified of snakes. I was especially freaking out because we had a 1st floor room at BC, with lots of foliage. I made DH do a "snake check" every morning before I would sit on the patio. That was fine, no snake spottings.
However, when we were coming back from the pool one day ds was lagging behind. Dh was waiting for him and I was ahead with the girls. A few minutes later I saw ds racing towards the room, white as a ghost. Apparently a large black snake had crossed right in front of him. It was on the BC walkway, by the back of the laundry room, near the outdoor bathrooms. Now he is a converted snakeaphobic. Needless to say we were always looking down when we walked anywhere in Disney!

My mom stepped right over a small black snake coming off the bus at POFQ last week. Snake was clearly waiting more patiently for the bus than the peopel. I told her many steps later what had happened. Didn't want to create a Nana-shaped hole in the FQ bus stop pavillion.

I cannot read these snake posts with my feet on the floor. I'm sitting on them now. I think Disney needs to do some snake wrangling then take them somewhere like the Everglades to mingle with their own kind. Is it possible they are becoming over populated (like the deer here in Indiana)? I'll soon be staying at WL, where I've seen more snakes than anyplace else in my life. I'll let you know if I see any. :scared:

Is there such a thing as snake repellent? For sure I'm taking my flashlight to check the room and maybe a tiny one to light my path at night. I'm not going to worry about them or let the thought ruin my vacation though. I thought about setting a bowl of Purina snake chow a little ways away from my door so they will eat that and not want to come in my room - or am I thinking of bears? :)
