We (just me and my DH) are thinking about renting a cabin at Ft. Wilderness in Dec. Renting a cart is not an option, and I am concerned about the overall distance that we will have to walk. What is the distance from the 2800 loop to the Marina?
How is internal transportation?
I am going to request a cabin next to the canal, but you never know what you will get.
Thanks for all your help!!! :confused3

The entrance of 2800 is over 1.3 miles from the end of the dock at the marina. I would recommend the internal buses, they run every 10-15 minutes. I just think as the 10-15 minutes as being the time it would take to walk from your room to a bus stop at any other resort.

Without a cart, I would request a cabin nearest to the internal bus stop for your loop. That can cut down on your walks back to the cabin after a long day in the parks tremendously.
Have fun!

Thanks for the quick replies. I have changed our reservations to Ft. Wilderness cabins, but I forgot to request a cabin!!!!! :scared1:
Hoping for a cabin by a canal. I will call back once our reservation to Ft. Wilderness goes through on the Disney system. Hopefully by tomorrow.
I caved and reserved a golf cart for our entire stay. We look forward to our Disney vacations all year!! :woohoo:

You caved QUICK!!!!!! But a good cave....the golf carts are a blast and you'll be glad you reserved one.
What made you decide on a cabin with only 2 people in your party? You know....you can enjoy all the Fort has to offer with a much larger choice of areas to make requests for....like right NEXT to the marina AND SAVE A TON OF MONEY!!!! Instead of spending SO MUCH for a cabin for 2, have you considered renting a CAMPER? Theres a regular here on the board who rents out her brand new luxury camper, sets it up on your disney site, and handles all of the red tape for you at a significant savings when compared to cabin rental. Many here have used her service. You may want to give it a second thought, her website is www.CampAtTheFort.com (http://www.CampAtTheFort.com), its really the best way to experience Fort Wilderness without owning an actual camper of your own.
Either way you go....you're gonna LOVE Fort Wilderness.
OHHHHH.......and WELCOME TO THE CAMPING BOARD!!!!!:welcome:

It's an easy walk to the outpost and a lovely one to the marina. We only did the marina walk once but it was a lovely way to see the fort. We did not do a cart and had zero issues with the internal buses, I don't think we waited more than 5 min. Being at the start of the loop, near the bus stop was wonderful!

Thanks for the welcome BigDaddyRog.
I was told by the Bike Barn that if we did not want the golf cart for our entire trip we could bring it back and get a refund for the remaining unused time.
I did find www.CampAtTheFort.com (http://www.campatthefort.com/) last night, but when you add in the rental for the RV plus the the campground fees -- there is little difference in price. That is why we decided to go with the cabins. We like the activities that Ft. Wilderness has to offer.
I have been lurking on the Campground board for a few months, and DH and myself think we would really like Ft. Wilderness. :thumbsup2

I just wanted to interject that there are obviously various definitions of "little difference". Renting from CampAtTheFort saves a minimum of $58 per night (Premium during value season) to a maximum of $174 per night (Full at Christmas), and that's before tax, so actual savings are even more than that! That $58 is the price of a GC rental from FW. I just didn't want the perception that the trailer rental is about the same as getting a cabin to stand unchallenged... the savings can be substantial (in my book).

I agree with you Shan-man, $58 per night is nothing to sneeze at. And your right, it could pay for my GC. But, we are inexperienced RVers -- never done it. My DH does not want to take the chance that something may go wrong. We just want everything to be perfect (I know, so does everyone else!)
If you are a camper, can you still be on the DDP?
Are you calculating the campground fees to be $78 during preholiday (I think Disney changed the week or so before Christmas to be preholday season), and $114 starting Dec. 18th?
But, who knows, we could always change our mind!!! (Don't tell me I have to change my reservation again!!!) :surfweb:

Some of us change our reservations more than our underwear, but I'm not telling on anyone (yet)!:lmao:

Don't forget that IF you get a PIN code, that can be applied to the cabins. However, it won't be applied to your camper rental.
I happened to get a 40% off that knocked a hunk off our cabin and brought the cost down to actually less than renting a camper plus campsite fees.

I have been meaning to improve my chart comparing CampAtTheFort to cabins, and your most recent question prompted me to add some needed finesse. Mainly, I was aware that the cabin rate seasons did not fully align with the campground's season, but had done my initial calculations assuming value season=value season. Well, here are the actual rates, and I have to admit, my assumptions lead to some misstatement in previous posts. Let's look at the chart:
http://i523.photobucket.com/albums/w359/SLSettles/CatF_Compare-1.jpg
I had calculated before that CampAtTheFort was at least $58 cheaper than the cabins, well, actually it's $35 in late July when the Cabins are in Value season and the CG is in Regular, and for Premium sites for two plus weeks in early December when the Cabins are in value and the CG is in Pre-Holiday. I'm sorry for the error, I meant no deception. I colored these misstatements in blue. Other than those few weeks, the statement stands. Perhaps more striking in this chart is how many days you can save more than a hundred dollars a day. I have color-coded these days green to make the point. I think that CampAtTheFort is an exceptional value.
As for your other questions: CampAtTheFort handles the delivery and setup so there is nothing to go wrong from your inexperience. And yes, you can do the DDP at the campground, just not free dining (or most other discounts).
EDIT: For the revised chart that includes taxes, see post 19 in this thread. (or click here (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=30563456&postcount=19))

DISCLAIMER: I have no business involvement with www.campatthefort.com and they neither encouraged nor approved this endorsement. I am simply a fan of the service and am excited about the value they offer. I evangelize them because I want to see them, and their business model, flourish!

Shan-man - that was very nice of you to put that together. I know often times the cost comparison is made - so it's nice to see it in black and white (and green and blue and . . .).
One thing to consider is the sales tax. I don't believe sales tax is charged on the camper rental(only on the campsite).

I hope folks find it useful... I have already.
I did ask Tina about other fees and she did say she has to collect tax on the rental... but I'm not sure it is the same 12.5% you'll pay Disney. If it is, then you can add 12.5% of the savings amount to get the total savings. But I suspect her tax is somewhat less since her business is located out of county, but I don't know. Maybe she'll pop in and provide some clarity?

Okay, here is the revised chart INCLUDING taxes:

It makes the case for CampAtTheFort even more! Save up to $203 after tax!

We are sticking with the cabins. More flexibility on cancellations, and if a problem arises, it is all on Disney. I am so looking forward to staying at Ft. Wilderness!!!! :yay:

I think you made the right choice. RV's aren't for everyone, and the cabin seems to be larger than an RV.
As for the price - keep checking - last summer we managed to get an AP rate around $160 per night for a cabin. It made it worth it to actually buy the APs and take more frequent trips for a year.
I suspect Disney is going to be extending the 4/3 deal and you may do well with that.
I'm booked on it in regular season and it's still a pretty good deal - when you add in the $200 gift card they're also giving us.

Vickmeys, I think you will really enjoy the cabins like we do. We are senior citizens and will only stay at the cabins on our yearly trips. We usually buy annual passes and manage to set it up so we can get two 10 day trips within a year and save any where between $80 and $100 a night. Don't forget that mousekeeping even does the dishes for you and you have your own ice maker in the fridge.
We try to stay in 2100 ,2200 or 2300 loop which is in the middle about 3/4 to 1 mile away from both the Outpost or the Settlement. It is also about one half a mile to the Meadows trading post, pool and campfire. Make sure you request what you want and have it put on your reservation and also send a fax about 5 days before your arrival. By the way we have never used a golf cart, the buses are just fine.
Have a really great trip. You will love it:lovestruc

Dh and I have stayed in the cabins twice and we just love them! You'll have a great time. We didn't rent the golf cart either. The internal bus system was very efficient.
