Its a fan club...membership fee, exclusive items, annual convention, reminds me a little of Disneyana. Note: There are also separate trademarks for pins, t-shirts, hats, etc...
To add even more fuel to the fire, these two pics were accidentally posted to the disney shopping page for a few minutes, and pulled very quickly.

Maybe it's because 1923 is considered the year that the Walt Disney Company formed.

I agree, as it's sort of paying for what a lot of people are organizing for free.
but it's also a pretty slick marketing move in today's economic environment. With seeing the activity of strong communities like the Dis, coupled with the dissapearance of MouseFest, it's a no-brainer for Disney Execs to wonder why they aren't tapping into that consistent income stream.
It's an easy way to identify a target group of people who visit repeatedly and spend lots of money in Disney parks, resorts, on food, merch etc ... Not only will they get money from a membership, but they can spend less money by targeting specific promotions, and bring in a larger return on investment.
I'm actually surprised it took Disney this long to do something like this.

I think it's pretty smart on Disney's part. There are so many fans and so many clubs. I'm looking forward to having an official club. I'm fine with fees as long as I get something out of it, and we certainly will. Now I will know if someone is a Disney freak like me. I just have to ask them if they are 23:lmao: Disney knows how to bring in the money, who can blame them?

Paying for a membership isn't an issue if you get something for what you pay for. If you get a magazine subscription, shirt, some pins, etc... that would be good, plus the convention sounds very nice from what I've heard about it. We'll just have to see the final details, but I for one will be signing up first thing (if its affordable that is).

I agree with you, especially the affordable part. If it's in the range of what the old Disney Club cost (adjusted up for inflation and all), then it sounds great. If it's so expensive that I have to choose between "Being 23" or an AP...

I've heard varying things, from similar costs of the old Magic Kingdom Club, all the way up to $100. Of course, if it would be $100, you'd better bet it would include quite a bit of stuff. I mean, even Disney isn't so stupid to think that people would pay that much just for a plastic wallet card and bumper sticker.

Do you mind explaining the old Magic Kingdom club? Never heard of it.
I wouldn't mind paying even $100. May sound like a lot to some but if Disney is your "thing" it's a small price to pay for an exclusive club just for other fans. no flames...just my opinion.

If you get a couple of pins and a few other goodies, and it is about $100 they have probably pitched it about right. It is expensive enough where the average person will not be interested in parting with that amount of cash. Whereas for us fans who spend our hours on boards like this or collect, it is just within a range where it is plausible for people to join in their droves. Exclusive - but possible.
I'm excited.

I agree with what your saying but does everyone really think its going to be a number so low as $100. I'm not saying $100 is a small amount of money, I'm simply saying that $100 will not make this an exclusive "club". I just feel $100 really isnt much money considering the size of Disney's popularity and Standards. IMO

Well, it's about what I expected in price and offers. It seems that the magazine is going to be a pretty artistic collectors item by itself. The D23 Site (http://d23.disney.go.com/articles/031009_NF_FS_DisneyTwentyThree.html) says "Individual issues retail for $15.95". So that's $63.80 right there if it's that good of a publication. Then I'm paying some $11 for everything else.

You weren't kidding! So for just $75 I get 4 magazines, a surprise which could be a pin or tshirt, an offer to travel across the country.... and the right to spend more money on items.
Maybe it's because I'm on the verge of poverty here but no thanks.
To those who joined, however, I do hope it offers all you hope it will. It likely will.... I just think it's a shame that some who are huge disney fans can barely afford to visit the parks let alone now be part of an exclusive fan club.
I agree with what someone said earlier (on this thread or another).. I don't think this was part of Walt's vision.
Maybe I"m just bitter because after paying bills I"m lucky to have $50 in my account let alone $80.

Well I joined early this morning, give it a shot for a year and see what happens. I figure the magazine price alone nearly covers the cost for a year and I have a feeling a few more "perks" will be added.
Alot of people are complaining about a couple of the executive items, namely the pen. I understand where they're coming from but there is alot of normal priced stuff as well. I have a growing pen collection and I've seen pens go for many times that amount. The problem I have is that it doesn't appear that these pens are made by any of the big companies (Mont Blanc or MontaGrappa). Still, I'm seeing alot of complaints about a single item...just don't buy it and move on.
I was in Vegas in November and would have hated to seen what some of those folks would say about the prices of some merchandise there...
Ok, done ranting, move along!!!

I have to say that I'm disappointed in the Dis today.
Over on some other sections people are complaining like crazy, even the podcaster went off on a rant over on that page. They're all acting like they have a right to have a fan club everyone can join and they're constantly complaining about how much things cost (even branching off to the parks, hotels, etc...). I mean do these people walk through a mall and complain about every expensive item they find? I finally made a post over there and told them how I felt.
Bottom line, if you don't want something, don't buy it, but why complain? I remember when all WDW had were deluxe resorts, now they have rates that go as low as $50. There are times of the year that its cheaper to go there than just about anywhere else I could think of. I can go to the mall and buy a $5 watch or I can buy a $5,000 watch...but its at least nice to have that choice isnt' it?
I'm sorry, but I had to get it out...I mean if people don't like it, all they had to say was "its not for me", kinda like you guys have been saying here. I'm really starting to see big differences in the personalities of the different sections of this site.

I understand what you said about other parts of the site. I used to be a HUGE contributor to one of the other boards way back when. Now, I can't even read the topics, let alone spend time posting. Most of it is just the topics, but some of it is personalities, and some of it the "tone".
Anyway, I'm the same about the "give it a year and see" attitude with this. So far, I'm under-whelmed by the events listed on the D23 Fan Site, "Note:
You do not need to be a member of D23 to attend this event." Not that I want to be exclusionary, but I was expecting a few events for members only, not unlike the AP events here at WDW.

Exactly, too many people "giving the impression" of wanting something for nothing. I don't think this was ever setup to be a loyalty club for free, which is what some of them seemed to think. Of course, any dissenting views were immediately attacked and accused of being insulting.
I understand what you're saying about the events, I would love to possibly attend one at WDW and wish they had one there. But, maybe they will add things. How about re-opening Adventurers Club to D23 members only?
After hearing some of the rants and raves by a few who have a sense of entitlement in some of the other boards, I have come to the following conclusion. There's an article on the D23 site that makes it clear that Disney is reading what we say, as it makes several quotes from "various sites" (laughing place by name) of funny things we guessed D23 would be about. If I were an executive and read some of the bad comments being made now, I would reward those people who had faith "from day 1", maybe those who joined during the first week. I would extend a few special perks to those folks to reward them for their loyalty. I would do this to prevent the other guys from waiting until we start getting perks, and then joining up to get them at that point...I would definitely reward those who took the first plunge, it would be fitting.
Who knows, maybe that will happen...maybe "our" special gift will be better than what's offered in the future. Either way, I have a feeling some folks will be a day late and a dollar short and wish they would have joined up from the start.

I've never been a fan of the "I'll just yell louder than you until I grind you into the dirt" school of discussion/debate that I saw in the first few pages. Then again, I'm pretty much a conflict avoider, and probably wouldn't have had the guts to speak my mind the way you did either.
"conflict avoider"...uh oh, so much for the manly hero persona I was trying to cultivate :scared:
Well, had I known then I wouldn't have posted either...my mistake. Oh well, live and learn.
I have faith and I really do think that those of us who got in on the ground floor will be rewarded, while others are looking in and kicking themselves asking "why didn't I do it too".
Keep the faith!!! :thumbsup2

Rob....
if you are interested to see the 1st issue magazine D23 some of your local TDS are already showcasing it out... you can go and browse they should have atleast a couple open/out of plastic sleeves...
The magazine is $15 an issue if sign on for the membership... you get 4 issue ($60 if you buy it at your local TDS or at the parks) magazine.. really nice prints etc... I am sold when I saw the magazine... then you have that surprise gift... assuming that it would be about $10 and then the paper they use for your certificate would be about $5 PLUS getting discounts for upcoming merchandises so I think you get your money's worth...
have not gotten an answer about the cost of renewing the membership fee... got mix answer but most def'ly not $75...
also in their rumor mill that yes AP got to see previews at the park the D23 will hopefully get you discounts or some type of point system for Disney movies and stuff...
so yeah the 1st year = wait and see process for me is already sold and situated.. it is the after 12 months where my question lies...
Good luck on your purchase!!!
if you decide not to join there is still a way in getting it (the Magazines) for a much cheaper price...
1. if you have those coupons from TDS between %15 to %45 (so far the CM at the local TDS are not aware that it is not included so alot were buying today the magazine becasue they have that coupon that they got from a pre order Pinocchio...
2. you wait till the TDS is having a Sale or
3. wait for it to go on clearance :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 ... no membership fee and get to enjoy the magazine!!!)
again it is Disney Math talking/thinking here:cloud9:

I'm one of the ones who are going to let my disfriends try it first... I've been disappointed at Disney's gimmicks as of late.
Also, many of the events that were showcased are in Disneyland- I'm not in the position (nor will I be in the position in the foreseeable future) to be able to take advantage of these events. I'll give it a few months tho. Timmy and Sha, make sure you keep me posted! :goodvibes

I am probably going to join either tonight or tomorrow. I would probably buy the magazines anyway, so I figure that I might as well spend the extra $11 for the membership. I really want to purchase a t-shirt with the charter date on it or the zip-up hooded sweatshirt. I hope everyone enjoys their membership!!

I understand what you're saying about the events, I would love to possibly attend one at WDW and wish they had one there. But, maybe they will add things.
Did you read the FAQ yet? I'm paraphrasing this, but it said something about holding the Expo in Anaheim for the first four years, then possibly alternating coasts and maybe even going international.

This is EXACTLY what I predicted would happen. I believe that once its all said and done, most people's opinions will change. I don't think they've finished with their offerings yet, this is only the beginning. I've missed several ground floor opportunities with Disney (and in other things as well) and didn't want to let this one fly by.
I just hate seeing all the negativity about Disney lately. I do have a personal connection, as it is the place that my Father and I vacationed all the way up til his passing.
Like I said, keep the faith...I know I have.
Incidentally, getting in on the ground floor is exactly why I now have free 7-day passes for Universal Orlando on the way...as I was quick on the draw when I saw the Superbowl Ad. In my experience, its often rewarded to be first. So I'll be in Orlando this year spending my first few days for FREE!!!

When I was looking at the D23 site yesterday, I saw that there will be a "members only" preview of the new Disney movie "Up".
"Meet some of the creative forces behind Up and enjoy a special screening of Pixar's latest gem the Uplifting adventure of a lifetime! We're still working out the details, but stay tuned... we'll keep you updated as details are finalized"
So it does look like there will be some Members only offerings.

Has anyone bought any of the D23 merchandise? I want to buy one of the pins but can't decide which one to buy, I wish I get all 3 but can't. I would like to buy one of the t-shirts but most of the time I need a 3XL size and the sizes only go to XXL. I do like the baseball cap too hopefully they will come out with more.

Joe I am sure everyone feels they have a personal connection to Disney. I think that is part of the reason people are so passionate about Disney. It is because of that that many people feel let down. There seem to be two camps...those that love Disney and are happy to scoop up whatever they offer and those that love Disney and expect maybe a bit more after being a devoted consumer. (well a third camp...those that love Disney but don't really care about this kind of stuff...that would be me LOL).
Doesn't mean one is right and one is wrong. Everyone's perceptions are different. This is a discussion board...which means people discuss their opinions...positive and negative. Sometimes it is hard to hear, I got reamed over a post I made last night. But whatever, people are entitled to their opinions. If you don't want opinions than a blog is probably a better option.

I never said it did. Everyone can have their own opinions. I just know how these things shake out. Once everything is announced, all of a sudden everyone will love it and magically forget all the negative things they said, even though Disney plainly said there was more to come. Like I said, I've been rewarded from time to time when I've got in on the ground floor...so I'm giving it a shot. I do think there were a few who had over-expectations, half off on rooms, etc...I mean common folks, but you have that when things like this happen. Incidentally, I'm now hearing that members get to see the movie "UP" before anyone else, that's a nice start.
As to your post last night, I looked at it. Being in the travel industry, I can point you to a case similar to yours. See the link below:

D23 Joins Forces with One Man's Dream
03.26.09 - One Man's Dream has long been a fan favorite at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Now, the beloved attraction, which pays homage to the life and vision of Walt Disney, now celebrates the fans who are equally important to the Disney legacy. Starting tomorrow, One Man's Dream will be presented by D23 with new "D23 Welcomes You" signage on the marquee.
"D23 is the ultimate Disney fan community and One Man's Dream is the ultimate attraction tribute to Walt Disney in our parks so they fit together perfectly," explains Eric Jacobson, senior vice president, Walt Disney Imagineering, whose team thought of partnering with D23 on the endeavor. "One Man's Dream showcases the history of Walt Disney and The Walt Disney Company and gives our Guests a look at what is new around the world and a sneak peak at what's coming. D23 has a similar mission for its members."
The partnership includes new D23 theming and a new display case featuring the room of a Disney fan (we won't say whose!), adding to the robust collection of Disney history currently on display. "One Man's Dream is a collection of artifacts, models, memorabilia and special effects," adds Eric. "It appeals to the Disney fans because it can't be seen anywhere else."
Many of those pieces came from the Walt Disney Archives, which is a big part of the D23 community. "So it's only natural and fitting that the One Man's Dream exhibit should be presented by D23," notes Becky Cline, manager of the Walt Disney Archives and a D23 team member.
Artifacts from the Archives, which have long been a part of the attraction, include Jimmie Dodd's Mouseguitar from the 1955 Mickey Mouse Club, original props from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Walt Disney's working office.
The new D23 display case features items the Archives team pulled together all pieces a real Disney fan might own. "There's some fun stuff," Becky says, including the Ultimate WALL·E, a "Treasures of the Archives" lithograph and the five-Mickey pin set which was very first Walt Disney Archives Collection item. "Plus, a lot of the books are favorites for us in the Archives like Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, The Disney Poster Book and of course from the Disney Archives, Disney A to Z by our very own Dave Smith!" Becky adds.

Hello everyone,
I also recently joined D23. I have received the card and the magazine package. It looks like the "special gift" is good. Will they all be the same do you suppose?
As far as the $$ thing goes..........I have spent $75 and received less.
This is fun and kinda exciting since we do not know what Disney has in store for us loyal patrons.
It may be a nice Disney gift to your self if you can't make it to Disney this year.
I will be going in August (hot) and staying at the AK; the prices could not be overlooked.
I have not posted on a board for awhile because of the "issues" spoken about earlier here. I am sooooo glad the nice normal people are here and I have found you!! :goodvibes

:goodvibes
Always thinking magical thoughts,
Welcome...yes, you'll find alot of nice folks here. Come back and post often...:yay:

I didn't know about the Jiminy pin until I looked today and saw it and it was sold out. I looked on Ebay too to see. Just ridiculous. Was there any kinda limit on how many of these pins you could buy or could you buy as many as you wanted? It's nice to pay to be a member and ya can't get any of these pins.

For those of you who have already received your magazine and certificate: do you remember what method of shipping was used? Even though I already have my card and collectible, I'm still waiting on everything else and wondering if it has anything to do with Disney's shipping method. TIA!

Hmm...I think it was USPS. I know it was in a solid and sturdy cardboard box/wrap thing, because I still have it in there. With as careless as I and my pets can get, I'd rather just protect it from all of us. ;) When I get home, if I remember, I can check, though you may already have it by this time. :)

Would be nice if they only let members buy 1 maybe 2 pins so the rest of us can get them. I had read that there would be like a set of 10 of these charter year pins, does anyone know if that's true?

That's what I heard as well. It's a set of 10, limited edition, which is why folks seem to be buying them up and looking to cash in on the resale. As for me, all I even want of the whole set is the Jiminy pin. Oh well, here's hoping I get lucky with it.

The fun begins at 7:00 p.m. with an exclusive D23 member pin trading event in the lobby of the El Capitan. This coincides with the release of eight (8) new pins at the Disney Soda Fountain and Studio Store (open to the general public). Space is limited for the pin trading event.
At 10:00 p.m., the El Capitan's theater doors swing open, inviting Guests to enjoy classic Disney songs played by the theater's award-winning organist.
Grab your free popcorn and soda because at 11:00 p.m. the show begins. Get ready for the fantastic Disney stage show Lighten Up!, the exciting Pixar short film Partly Cloudy, and the main event Up! Plus, there will be special guest appearances, and expect a few magical D23 touches along the way!
Best of all, the event is FREE to members courtesy of your friends at D23.
TICKETS:
For tickets and to reserve your spot for pin trading, call 818-845-3110 today!
Members may order a ticket for themselves and one (1) guest. Each ticket includes one popcorn and drink. If you would like to attend the pin event, you MUST reserve a spot on the list when calling for tickets. Only Guests attending the D23 Up screening may attend the pin trading event.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A limited number of tickets are available to D23 members in good standing. Tickets requests will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. D23 members must provide their membership number when requesting tickets and must bring their membership card and a photo ID to the theater for entry. Tickets will be mailed via United States Postal Service First Class Mail, if ordered prior to May 18, otherwise tickets will be at Will Call. Seating is general admission, and a D23 member must be one of the ticket holders.
The El Capitan Theatre is located at 6838 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA. 90028.
Pin Trading Event
Trading will take place in the El Capitan Theatre Lobby from 7 10:00 p.m.
Space is very limited. D23 members MUST RSVP for the pin trading event when they call for their tickets. Names will be placed on a guest list. D23 members must bring their membership card and a valid photo ID for entry.
Pin traders should enter the pin trading event through Disney's Soda Fountain for check in. The theater lobbies (Orchestra Level and Lower Lounge) will be set with tables and chairs; pin traders are allowed to sit and trade anywhere they like. Pin traders are free to roam the lobbies and trade with each other throughout the 3-hour event.
The trading space will also have trading boards run by Cast Members as well as plenty of Cast Members with lanyards for trading.
Pin Release
Note: This event is open to the general public as well as D23 members. D23 members who wish to attend should plan accordingly.
Limited Edition Pins will be released at 7 p.m. on May 28 at Disney's Soda Fountain & Studio Store. Pins will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, using our voucher system.
The Voucher System Typically for pin releases and trading events a line will form outside the Soda Fountain prior to the release time. In order to keep people from cutting in line and holding space the Studio Store has developed a voucher system. Numbered vouchers are provided to everyone in line 30 minutes prior to the release time. Pins are then sold by voucher number. The system is very simple and keeps everyone honest.
There are a total of eight (8) pins being released, and all pins are Limited Edition and exclusive to Disney's Soda Fountain and Studio Store. Seven of the pins are from a fun series that includes our favorite characters placed in our Soda Fountain Logo. The Limited Edition sizes run from LE 100 to LE 300. In addition to the Logo series, they will release a Disney·Pixar Up Marquee pin Limited Edition of 300.

Just got an email from D23 to let my know my first shipment is coming! :woohoo:
Then I got an email with a survey link; did everyone else do the survey?
I took the survey a couple of days ago, I thought it was the most fun customer survey I've ever taken. If you get the link, be sure to take the time; you'll be smiling the whole way through!

I would love for them to do some events at WDW but it seems I have joined something that is only for those that go to the west coast. I wanted to send them an email or letter asking if that was the case, but couldn't find how to contact them yet. I love the membership but do feel cheated because there is nothing for WDW, which was the whole reason I wanted it.

D23 has only been out for 3 months now and they are adding things so are going in the right direction. I mean of the 8 summer events they are not all on the West Coast, 1 was at Epcot, one in New York and 1 in Chicago.
I have enjoyed my membership so far, even though I have just been spending money on collecting the pins. LOL! I ordered the Gus pin on Friday. I'm also waiting on the other pins since they are like on backorder for 6 to 7 weeks. There will probably be more events added at WDW as time goes on. I am glad that I decided to join the charter year.

Back when D23 first started, I commented that they should (and May) do something extra special for those who joined on the very first day. We had faith that it was going to be something great and, despite the many complainers, joined anyway.
Yesterday I recieved an unmarked envelope in the mail, with a letter and a special gift....for those of us who supported D23 from day 1. Its a large pin that is dated "Day One Charter Member March 10, 2009". See the pictures below:

Just got my pin yesterday, YAY! And like Joe said, it's a "plain brown wrapper". I was expecting it, and still thought "no way THAT would be the pin", and I was still wrong.
I think that one may have to bypass the lanyard that I rarely wear, and go right on the hat that I always wear.

I'm sure the user still needs to be a D23 member, but I just see too many opportunists trying to take advantage of every little thing. I guess that's just one of many parts of living in the good ole' U.S.A.

Thought you would like a review of the night's festivities....
There were people there from Rhode Island and California!
My seat was in center orchestra, 6th row. What a different experience to watch the show. If you recall, I also went for J's birthday in April and saw the show from front mezzanine, 5th row.
WOW!
I'll backtrack a bit - the bus ride went fine and dandy. It was even less expensive than I thought! I got there a bit earlier than I expected, so I took a few minutes to take pics of the local scenery. I didn't go all the way down to the new pedestrian mall though. I have to do that next time. Gotta love NYC! :goodvibes
I also stopped in to Europa Cafe to grab a sandwhich, coffee and a rice krispie treat for later on the way home.
I finished and picked up my ticket at Will Call and asked about the DVD. The window guy didn't seem to know what is going on, but told me to go inside. I asked the ticket taker and she didn't know. I asked at the merchandise counter and he said there was a guy with a tag that said D23 and look for it, that he was wondering around. I also took to wondering about just a bit to see this beautiful theater and took a few pics. It's just gorgeous!! :lovestruc
I got to my seat and meet a few fellow D23ers. A family from Rhode Island who's son requested this as his graduation present. Cool! I took a pic of them and they took a pic of me in front of the "Cherry Tree Lane" backdrop.
A few minutes later, I spotted the guy with the D23 tag and introduced myself. I completely forget his name :scared:, but he was really nice. There was also a woman counterpart; just as nice. He explained that to wait a few minutes after the show and then we'll start the tour and there was a surprise! We will also receive the DVD after the show. I also found out that I could have bought 4 tickets. :guilty:
The show was great and now seeing it from 2 different locations, I can really appreciate how the performers get it right. I know I was be-bopping in my seat for a few numbers. :music: After the show, we stay in our seats for a few minutes. The show wraps up quite quickly this time around; I guess they don't mess around with the 8pm shows (the previous time was a 2pm Sunday show).
Our group of perhaps 25 people or so, were led into the backstage area and got to meet Mary & Bert! I didn't get to shake hands since they were lining us up for a group picture quite quickly. We take the group picture and I said "D23!" as the picture was taken and it got a bit of a laugh. The D23 CM said "you should have my job!". :lmao:
Some other D23ers had their cameras out and the D23 CMs took shots with the personal cameras. So, we should have quite a few. I have no idea how we'll get the group picture from the D23 people themselves or the other people. I don't think anyone was on the DIS. :confused3 I guess the D23 CMs will post it on the D23 page or email us individually since they know who we are.
I did exchange cards with the friendly family next to me, who were able to get their camera in for one of the group shots. I wasn't fast enough and i was crouching down and in slight pain by then. LOL!! They had a professional camera since they are professional photogs. I was standing behind and to the left of Mary. :upsidedow
Then we were able to get our Playbill signed by both players - Shelley and Andy. They had their own sharpies, thank goodness. I was able to tell them that I saw the play in April and, of course, had to mention meeting Mary P at WDW and the Supercali Breakfast. :goodvibes
After that, we got a talk from one of the stage managers and how the stage worked and some of the magic but he kept some to himself. :wizard: It was really a nice talk and it lasted for quite a few minutes. I took some video and a bunch of more pictures from the stage.
We also got to see one of the wings where props were kept and some of the silly cast/crew stuff like a voo-doo Mary doll with pins in her as a joke from Halloween.
We got led out by the cast entrance (with DVDs in hand) and the people there waiting thought we were part of the cast. It was really cute.
I looked at my cell and it said 11:03pm as I was walking away from the theater. I met my 11:20pm bus home (though it left at 11:30pm).
It was a fantastic time :cloud9: and I met a few nice people. The D23 CMs were very nice. I'm glad iIwas able to attend the first D23 event in NYC.
I'll have my photos and videos up when I go home tonight.
