I called Rogers about using our phones in the USA and was told it was .60 per text message sent and that they were free to receive. Said there were no other fees or roaming charges for text mssgs.
Does this sound about right to those of you that have used Rogers? Hate to be suprised with any extra costs-kwim.
We don’t plan to make any calls-just texts to each other while down there.
I was thinking of buying two virgin phones but once you add the top up cards to the price of the phones I am thinking it would cost more than using our own phones to make a handful of text mssgs..

Don't text with Rogers in the U.S.! My children are with MTS and they have unlimited North America, but my DH and I are Rogers and the .60 is correct. We bought the tracfones instead, and the kids just text us thru them. Much better way to communicate as well. You are here in Wpg, so if you go down to GF or Fargo to go shopping, the Tracfones work down there as well. We use them for Disney and U.S. Shopping.

Yes, that's it. My eldest son stays home and we use text to talk to him. It doesn't cost anything for him to text me but 60 cents for every one i send to him. The real cost is incurred if you're using text messaging to keep in touch with someone else in your party. I stress to my teens NOT to text an 'ok' or some other little stuff. If you do 3 or 4 text messages a day, you're looking at $20 a week.
My daughter has a Koodo phone and it includes international text messaging. Her plan is $15 a month - total.

How much are the Tracfones?
Is there something else about Rogers I should know besides the .60/text?
We are not sending hundreds of them..for the couple of days we are not together all the time we will just need to send a few to meet up.

That is what we would be doing..keeping in touch with someone else in our party-just to let each other know where are & where to meet up..but not for chit chatting back and forth...probably only a few mssgs on the day we use it.
I have seen those Koodo phones..are they pay as you go?

I sent a couple of txt messages while I was in Disney in January. They were $0.60 but I figured it was cheaper than making a phone call since I was trying to figure out where someone else was in the park.

If you're only sending a few here and there, then I would pay .60 each. I know though, we do more than that, and we text and call people at home, so the Tracfone works for us. We got ours at Walmart in the U.S. for $15 each and it came with 20 min.

If you're on rogers, don't use your phone for anything requiring data when in the US (e-mail, weather, etc). The data roaming fees are astronomical!

I don't want to be paying any roaming fee's..that is why I thought texting would be best.
Thanks for the info guys..I just wanted to be sure I wouldn't be hit with any unexpected fee's for texting other than the .60 per mssg!!!

If you use Rogers for data while in US, call Rogers ahead of time and ask to purchase a US data package. Much, much less expensive, but has to be purchased before you go.

You could probably also call and get a US texting package for fairly cheap. Bell has one for just $5/month and that allows 50 outgoing msgs.
