View Full Version : Do you stay at multiple resorts during a visit?

It sounds like a number of members stay at multiple resorts during a single visit. We've always stayed at the same resort for our full stay. Although once we had a 3BR grand villa at SSR, but when everyone went home leaving two of us for another 2 nights, we switched to an AKV 1BR for the 2 nights. It was neat to experience the new AKVs, but it seems like such a hassle and waste of time to change resorts during a stay. So I'm just wondering how prevalent this action is.

and would avoid it with a passion. However, for the scenairo you described, I move move into the smaller unit to save on the points.

I start my stay on the weekend at a cash resort, and then go to DVC on Sunday. To save points!:thumbsup2

We have never split between cash and points but we have and will split between 2 DVC resorts. Of course, it depends on the length of the trip. If it is less than a week we stay at one resort - 7 or more nights we are more likely to consider splitting. I know many think it is a hassle but we did it in 2007 and thought it was like getting 2-trips-in-1. This summer we are splitting AKV and BLT! With our AKV points we could only book 5 nights in a concierge 1BR and we wanted to stay at WDW for 8 nights so we added 3 nights at BLT to the end of our trip. :)

Ditto; sometimes even stay off property on the first day to avoid high weekend point usage. (will stay on property if we can get a
'special', say at the "Riverside" or in a pinch the "All Star")

More and more often, I stay at more than 1 resort...usually one of them is AKV, I really love that resort! When DS/DDiL and DGC come, they stay put, but we usually get in before them, and stay someplace else. In May, we're doing a DCL, so it's BCV for all before and then AKV for all for one night afterwards. I can't wait to show my DGC the animals right outside our villa!!!!!

When we are with the kids we stay put. That is the only feasible option since we load up the icebox, instantly create piles of dirty laundry, and the kids are always a-buzz about going to the parks. In some ways it would be easier to sell our house and move than to change locations at Disney.

But I have bounced around on last-minute trips when I am trying to use up banked points before they are lost. If I don't have an active AP, it is little problem to move around and I like seeing the different resorts.

We do this either:
when we don't have enough points for our whole stay and we'll stay somewhere cheap first, then move over to our BCV.

or

to check out a new/other resort. Though so far we've only done this once in 2008 to check out AKV ( and SO glad we did!! ). I think we'll try to check out BLT next year.

For longer trips (@2 weeks or more) vacations get split; for shorter trips they don't. :goodvibes

We are doing a 10 night family trip in 2010, using a 2BR and 2 studio. We'll start at BWV for 5 nights, then, if available will move to OKW. It will give us the feel of 2 different vacations.

My split stays are posted in my signature. In the past few years, most of our trips have been split stays.

We have never stayed at multiple resorts and to be honest, I know we never will. There is no way I want to be changing resorts in the middle of my vacation, no matter how "easy" every one that does it claims it is. For us, it's not.

DH and I do not have tons of points. We bought in when the minimum was 150 and have never added on. We also don't choose our days so we can "save" points. If we don't have enough points to stay where we want to for the length of our vacation, we would either shorten the stay or borrow from the next year and skip a year.

It's just the way we choose to do things. I know that others feel differently.

won't split unless trip is 10+ nights. Very rare for us to take such long trips. This summer we are splitting - 6 nights at bwv followed by 6 nights at akv.

I hate moving too. No way. Won't do it. I'm always amazed at how often people move around during 1 week even!

We usually stay at one resort (usually SSR). Our last trip, we were able to leave a day early, so I booked a cash reservation Port Orleans Riverside. We liked the resort, but we are now SPOILED to our 2 bedroom DVC!!! Even the kids were asking "why aren't we at our disney house?" We are a family of 5....so it was a tight fit.

We usually split stay in the summer when we are there for 8-10 nights, usually do 4 to 5 nights at each resort. We spend a lot of time relaxing and using the amenities at the resort so we do feel like we are getting the best of both worlds.

If we went only for a week or less, I don't think it would be worth the hassle

I don't think I can vote because my answer doesn't fit. :)

Out of our five DVC trips so far, three of them we split between DVC and a cash non-DVC resort. And out of those three only one of them we did that by choice. The other two times were out of necessity: not enough points one time and no availability the other.

We are definitely in a phase of NOT wanting to switch resorts. We want to settle in to one place for the whole trip. So that is what we'll try to do.

We did last Christmas but only cause we added on 2 days and got such a GREAT discount with AP rate. Other then that, unless its and availability issue, we stay in 1 resort, Our waitlist came thru last July so we did not need to switch resorts. Shawnpirate:

I don't care if we were there for 3 weeks or more, we still wouldn't switch resorts. We grocery shop & fill the fridge & cabinets, unpack our clothes & the laundry basket seems to be constantly filled. We go often enough that I don't feel like I have to see 2 or more resorts in one stay. I know others say it's not that much of a hassle, but for us it would be a huge inconvenience. :goodvibes

My preference is to 'stay put'. However, I'm not opposed to a split stay when staying in excess of 8 days. During the holiday season, we like to begin our stay at VWL and end it at SSR. :santa:

In October, while we stayed at the same resort, we were in 3 different rooms: a studio, 1 bedroom and finally a 2 bedroom. The total duration was 11 days. Our waitlist didn't come through which necessitated multiple moves. I really hope I don't have to do that again anytime soon! Talk about a lot of wasted time!

We just did a split stay 2/14-2/18 Villas at Wilderness Lodge and 2/18-2/22 at Beach Club Villas. I booked it that way because we had never stayed at either and wanted to try them out. I had the 8 nights booked at Beach Club but changed to try VWL

The move went fine and it was not much of a hassle. Bell services moved all of the luggage and even our food. I felt like we lost a day at a resort even thought we would have been out all day. I also did not like VWL as much as BCV. It was a nice place but we LOVED BCV and I kicked myself for not staying there the whole time. I would never do a split stay again unless I needed to save points. I felt homeless for the day of the switch.:guilty:

At WDW? Generally only one resort. We've tried split stays twice and I'm not a huge fan.

However ... most other travel ... I enjoy split stays in two or more different locations. (Usually separated 3-10 driving hours apart.)

When we used to do longer trips from PA we would change resorts on some trips. Now that we live in Orlando, we only stay at one resort per trip.

We have split a few times. First trip we split between SSR and BWV 5/3 split. Then we split between OKW and BCV 8/6 split and this last trip we split but it was between SSR and our last night at ASM and that was a big mistake. I don't mind splitting that is what we are doing this summer. We are staying 6 at BCV and 3 at AKV but it is also nice to just stay put too. I think we do better with longer stays at each resort. I don't want to stay one place for 3 nights and then switch to another one for 3 nights. I like a 5/3 split at the minimum.

Depends....on how many times a year one might get to Disney and also the length of each trip. If you make numerous trips a year, you may be able to experience different resorts that way. However, if you make just one trip or so, then you may want to split stays--if the stay is at least 7 days.

We are staying there for over four weeks and will resort hop from AKV to BWV to BVC and Vero Beach, ending up at Royal Pacific at Universal. This way, we get to experience several for almost a week each and can use the DDP some, but not all of the time.

By all of the above posts we sure see a lot of variety (and all the scenarios seem to work for all the respondents), and isn't that what a part of DVC was for, flexibility; absolutely. :thumbsup2

We don't like splitting resorts but that's what we're doing for our October trip, mostly to make use of our DP's at SSR. If we use the DPs for Fri/Sat night at SSR then I have enough AKV points to do a 2BR and a Studio for 5 nights Concierge... and that little splurge seemed worth the move :)

ABSOLUTELY!! I couldn't agree with you more. I posted the poll out of curiosity (and to confirm that I'm not the only one who usually stays at just one resort at a time.) But I'm really enjoying the variety of people's reasonings for switching resorts and staying put. Thanks, fellow members, for giving us so much to think about!!

We prefer to stay in one resort for the whole stay.

We don't like unpacking, then packing, then unpacking again.

We are planning our second trip for this sept. we last went 3 years ago and split OKW 12 (i think it was) and BCV 2. we bought in at minimun planning to do a trip every three years using banked and borrowed. The one move wasn't bad and was worth it to get to enjoy the BCV ameneties. Kids loved stormalong bay. This trip we are starting at AKV 10, moving to THV 3, and again rounding it off at BCV 2. I'm not sure how it will go having to move twice but we really wanted to try these two resorts and we loved having the last couple relaxing days at BCV so we didn't want to change that!

I put usually always split between two DVC, because that was the closest choice. Since the first time staying at DVC, we have always split between at least two trip and always go off property for part of our stay.

I am not a fan of multiple resort stays although I have stayed at Pop Century on arrival Saturday to save points. I don't really consider that to be a split stay, we don't unpack until we get to our DVC resort. Once unpacked we don't want to move again. We are unpackers, we don't live out of the suitcase we unpack and put all our clothes in the drawers. We don't want to repack until we go home. The thoughts of staying at two resorts is actually appealing to me if we didn't have to repack and move and check in again and the room not be ready again. That just seems like it would be too much trouble and would take away from the trip.

I voted that we almost always stay at only one resort - we have never switched between DVC resorts. We have occasionally booked either the first or last night at a value but the scenarios were - the first night because we were arriving fairly late and didn't want to "waste" the points plus it allowed us to check in at our DVC bright and early and that always seems to result in better odds of getting the locations we want. When we booked the last night - it was because we found out that there was a MNSSHP on our last night - we had never been to one and always wanted to so we booked a cash night elsewhere, moved early afternoon - left the van mostly packed - only brought in what we would need for that night and the next morning then left early the next morning - no park time. I think we did the last night at a value one other time but I don't remember why it may have been when we were getting length of stay tickets and wanted to get all we could out of our last day - its been several years ago

The only "splitting" we're doing is this summer with a week at BCV then 3 n at Vero Beach. Not sure that qualifies as splitting. :confused3 I simply have no desire to pack up & move in the middle of my vacation unless I'm in Hawaii & I'm island hopping!:beach:

I pack the bags to go on vacation for the family and then I wash and repack the bags to go home! Twice is more than enough, and then to have to move kitchen stuff to boot, I don't think so. I'm not packing up to move somewhere else in the middle of my vacation. I like the motto "You buy where you want to stay" and I try to stick to it.

DH absolutely hates moving to another room let alone a room in the same resort. So our stays are always at the same resort in the same room. If we have to move due to the room not being availabe for the whole stay at the time of booking it drives DH nuts.

We have done this before, but mostly, we stay at the same resort the entire stay.

If we stayed for a couple of weeks, I may consider splitting the stay, but I'm a nester. I like to unpack and make myself at home!

Actually I forgot that in 2007 we spent five nights at BWV before heading to Vero Beach for a couple of nights, but I still think that is a different scenario than splitting stays at WDW.

Our vacation habits involve us occasionally splitting stays between either offsite or non DVC cash and our DVC point stays. We stayed over weekends with DVC about 50% of the time. The other 50% we would either stay at our offsite timeshare....or do cash nights for the weekends to save points.

With the new point allocation next year, we will be doing 100% cash nights on weekends at non-DVC resorts.

We've stayed at 2 different resorts on a couple of occasions and it's not always easy to do. To really enjoy the resort you need to stay at least 3 nights but 4 is better. Otherwise you feel like you just got there and you're moving! On our last trip we stayed at VWL then moved to SSR and when we got to SSR is truly was like going home.

We used to always stay at one resort a trip, but lately we have been splitting stays between our two homes. Mostly that's because AKV was new to us. NOw that we have stayed there a couple of times, I think we will continue to always split our AKV trips with OKW. We don't have many AKV points, so not really enough for a whole trip. It was never our intent to stay an entire trip there. Frankly, I like to view it as its own destination and save OKW for our WDW touring.

done all of them.

split stays with DVC - generally because my first resort pick was not available the entire time.

split stays with WDW resorts - use to pick POR now it is Pop generally because got a great deal on it or weekend stays (although with the new points chart that might happen less)

split stays offsite - have other timeshares so come down to them on Sunday and next sunday move into the DVC resort. this time having to do it the opposite way (which I don't like) but hey that is the way the better resorts sometimes work. (have a cheap one)

now sometimes can't get Sunday so it is Sat - which means a stay at a WDW resort - last year stayed at AKV value because of their cheaper weekend points - so just might start staying weekends at DVC resort.

My one contract has VB pts. and BLT pts. When not using all the points at VB, I will stay at BLT either 4 or 5 days (depending on the view) and use the VB pts. to extend the WDW stay over a weekend, and maybe a Thursday depending on where I will stay. This will be new for us.....my BLT stay in 2010 will be exactly this...MK view for Mon-Thurs, stay Fri, Sat, Sun somewhere else. Its only gonna be the hubby and me, we can pick up on the fly!! Our BWV stays, we stay the whole time at Boardwalk, no moving.:wizard:
