Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Out for 7 miles this morning. It was ugly. But it's done. :)

Helloooooooo, Helllllooooooooo, I think there is an echo in here. Hello??
Testing 1,2,3???

Anyway, I went out this morning first thing for my 12 miles as part of training for the Inaugural Princess Half Marathon which will be in two weeks!!!
Nice, slow and steady. Had high hopes of taking pictures with my cell phone along the way, but then the battery started to die and that was the end of that story.
When I ended I had salt crystals on my face, guess it's getting a bit warmer down here.
Used the pool once again as my ICE bath and worked very well.

Here is my path, it's an out and back.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j286/dsnyfan/races/12mileroute.jpg

I used the new Thorlo Experia socks. I liked them and worked well. I am use to wearing the regular white Thorlos. These have just the right amount of padding where you need it on the heel and the ball of the feet and toes. Other material is thin and doesn't slide around. Padding is listed as medium, I liked them and they come in colors - blue, orange, black, yellow and LIME green.

Have a good SUnday evening everyone......waiting for NASCAR to start!

:stitch2: Monday Mixers w/ Team 'Ohana :stitch2:

I thought I'd let the Weekly Thread members know that Team 'Ohana is inviting their WISH family to come visit its thread on Mondays. We thought this would be a good way for people on the teams/threads to get to know other WISHers better. Plus, 'Ohana like to think we know how to throw a party and we always like new guests! The drinks are free, if virtual, and no one will tell you when you've had enough. :upsidedow

I'll post a reminder on Monday, with a loose question/discussion topic to get the conversations going. There's no need to stick to the topic, of course, as it's really your sparking, non-alcoholic but still intoxicating presence that is requested. So, if you have a little time for socializing with your cousins, please stop by 'Ohana on Monday! :goodvibes

We invite you to visit Team 'Ohana for the Monday Mixer! Stop by anytime today (or anytime, really) and say hi. The mixer starts here (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=30445278&postcount=194) on the 'Ohana thread.

Our loose topic for 'Ohana's first Monday Mixer is "What song made you laugh out loud the last time you heard it?"

Of course, you don't need to stick with that prompt. You can talk about the last thing that made you laugh out loud, period. Or the Oscars, Nascar, Pixar. Or the meaning of life, the universe and everything. (Although we over at 'Ohana already know the answer is 42. You'll learn to love our geekdom. :rolleyes1)

I haven't gotten back into the swing of posting often yet. :confused3

This weekend I did an 8.25 miler on my TM. It was very slow but the total was fast enough to beat the sweeps.

 Great Job Sunny!! :cool1:

Looks like you're getting back into the swing of things. Don't worry about the posting - it'll come along soon enough.

Off from work today for me so I just went and had some blood drawn for next weeks docs appointment, took the car in for some service, did some Wii Sports and Fit and joined in over on the Ohana thread. Sounds like a good day so far.

I only did 3.5 today on the TM. Had to stop because of nasty blisters. I think I need to head back to the store with my new sneaks. I've been in them a month now and am still having issues. Doesn't matter what kind of socks I'm in . . . frustrating. I really felt good today, too. I could have done 3.5 more with no issue.

I'll try again on Wednesday.

Tracy: I love Thorlo socks for short runs, but haven't tried Experia. I might have to look into them, what with the range of colors and all. Of course, my tootsies won't look at cute as yours (sweaty or not). So, you must be done with your LWs for the Princess, right, and into taper? Except for the blood drawing, your day did sound pretty good. (At least productive.) Thanks for stopping by 'Ohana. It means a lot! :thumbsup2

Sunny: Great job with your 8+ miles ahead of the sweeper. Do keep everyone up to date on your training. You're an inspiration to us all! :lovestruc

As for me: Okay, after last week's back twinges I got back on the TM (for safety) this Sunday. I managed ~2.5 miles before my back hurt, then shifted to walking and the elliptical. Such a coward, I am. More elliptical today, plus stretching and XT. (I'm modifying some of my Pilates/yoga sequences.) Tomorrow I'll try for a run outside and see how I feel. Hmmm, maybe I need to run to Coldstone Creamery as incentive? :scratchin Nawwwww.

Snow shoveling for me today. Yes, again. But hey, it's supposed to melt away starting tomorrow.

Tracy, I may have to try those socks. I'll have to find some place here that carries them.

Sunny, congrats on being ahead of the sweepers. That is some good mileage too. You go!

It was nice to visit our cousins the Ohanas. Thanks for the fun and dessert!

Quick drive by before the fun at works starts.

I got in 5 miles (12:58) on the TM for some hill work/training for the CM Half. I'm with Sunny, ahead of the sweepers! The knees felt pretty good. They got a little stiff later in the evening. Took some Advil and went to bed.

Have a great day.

Hi peeps! (How many ways are there to say hello, anyway) Checking in at lunch while noshing on my Healthy Choice Sweet Asian Potstickers--new one, and not too bad.

Debra Sorry the back is still bothering. Hope your outdoor run goes well. All my incentives seem to involve food as well, although for the outdoor runs I think I most look forward to the prospect of a long hot shower.

Tracy Hope your blood drawing was relatively painless. Also had blood drawn today at a screening check here this am at work for cholesterol, glucose and BP. You'd think with the increase in activity over the past year I'd have something to show for it, but hcolesterol is still high (genetic), bp was higher than usual.

Did my speed work today. I would so love a chance to try it out at the Royal Family 5k next week, but still no return airfare from Florida that I'm willing to shell out for. AND now I see it's full-crud! PLus, how does Disney justify the MUCH higher weekend rates on hotels. It's stupid, especially in today's economy.

Now that I've ingested my healthy lunch, it's time to eat the GS cookies!

I have a question for those of you out there who bike.

What would be the equivalent bike ride for a 3 mile run? I usually run at 13:00 to 13:30 pace (yes, I'm slow, but proud :goodvibes ). I try to bike for the same amount of time that I would run. Is that right?

I've had some knee, hip, IT band issues, and am trying not to wear everything out before the CM Half.

Thanks for any input! :goodvibes

Hey Team... I have been sick the last 1 1/2 weeks. The kids brought it home and the schools have had so many sick kids. I had a sinus infection and still have the worst headache (not sure it is all cleared out yet). I have been cross training with minimal running because that hurts. I am so proud that I didn't give up even tho I am sick!!!!

My dog (running buddy who I love dearly) has cancer. She will be 10 this year and I suspected something was up. My previous died from it also so I knew. She isn't in pain, so we will continue life as is for the time being. But she won't be my running buddy much this year!

I gotta run.. but wanted to check in!!!

Jen, I'm sorry to hear you've had the yuckies at your house, and so sorry to hear about your golden being ill. That is so hard, I know how difficult it was when we lost our precious Keeper, but it is the price we pay when we open our hearts to these furry family members. We call our pups little love magnets - you just can't help but be drawn to their sweet faces and trusting eyes -at least when they are not doing something knuckle-headed like our Holly likes to do every once in awhile, but even then it is hard to get upset with her! Take comfort in knowing that your running buddy has had a full and happy life.

Jen: Hoping that you start to get over thta cold/sinus thing soon.

I am also sorry to hear about your dog. My dog Mickey (who is my "first" dog, I bought her and own her, I had many dogs growing up) was diagnosed with Liver disease about 2 years ago. She is 14. Don't know what is wrong with her liver, but I don't want to put her through more testing and biopsies. We just deal, like with the losing of hair on her tale and the constant drinking of water. We love our pets especially because of the unconditional love they give to us!

Allie, I don't know the bike/run equivalents. I'd be interested in knowing if you find it.

I know there is something for swim/run which has nothing whatsoever to do with your question.

Jen, I'm sorry about your good pup. You've been a great companion for your dog and I know it is difficult.

I went out with Kirby dog today for 2 miles on the snow path. Did some other stuff today too...No snow shoveling though!

Hey, Wishers!!

Jen--I am so sorry to hear about your dog, Sadie, right? I know how much you love her and what a member of the family she is. Hopefully she will still have a long time with you guys. I hope you feel better soon!

Maura--I'll have to check out the HC pot stickers. I LOVE Asian food, I could eat it every night, so to find some that is healthy would be awesome! What kind of cookies are you eating? My favorite is the Samoa/Caramel Delights. I ordered some from my niece, I can't wait until they come in!

Allie--I have always heard that 3 miles on the bike is roughly equal to 1 mile of running. I hurt my IT band during my 20 miler before the WDW full in 2007, so I spent a lot of time on the bike and the elliptical for those 3 weeks. Good luck!

Debra--Here's some :wizard: for your back! Hope it feels better soon! So are you pleased with the Oscar outcome? I watched the whole thing Sunday night and thought of you. :goodvibes In your opinion, if we were to rent a movie this weekend, which of the Oscar nominated movies should we start with? Go straight to the top with "Slumdog Millionaire"?

As for me, training for the Flying Pig 1/2 has been going great. I'm back in my running groove and back to loving running again, so I am excited! I had 5 miles for a lr this past weekend and this week is a taper back week. YAY!

Here a few pics of Carter in Disney from January. Can you believe he's already 7 months old??? :faint:

Jen: I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know how much your runs together mean to you both. I'm glad to hear she's not in pain and that you have some more time together, albeit off the course. Give her--and you--some hugs from us.

Liz: I agree. LWs in the heat of summer followed by a recovery ice-cream cone? I think I could double-dip WOs with incentive like that. (Okay, everyone can groan now.)

Jim: Great job getting your miles in, even if they weren't the biking miles I know you enjoy.

Lily: Thank YOU for visiting 'Ohana. (And to everyone who did the mixer. It felt good.) Congrats on getting out there with Kirby and w/o show shoveling.

John: That's a great pace--you'll be sure to stay ahead of the sweepers. How are your knees feeling today? Is the stiffness just on days-of runs?

Maura: At this time of year, "hello peeps" make me think of those yellow marshmallow confections. (Yes, I'm strange.) I do have to admit, a long hot shower does trump food as incentive. Getting me out there TO sweat, however, sometimes involves a little previsualization of tasty goodies. Though I try not to actually indulge in them afterwards and my body sometimes sneers "bait and switch" at me. My body now wants GS cookies, as a matter of fact. Does your post mean you're not doing Princess weekend? For some reason I thought you were.

Allie: I wish I had an answer on the equivalents. I think that putting as much time in the saddle as on the pavement is probably a good strategy. I can generally bike longer than I can run, but I don't really attempt to go fast on the bike. More like a recovery day. As for your knees, ITB, hip, etc., are you doing a lot of stretching every day--not just the days you run? Strength training? Those things will make a big difference. (I know YOU know this, but I tend to give them the short shrift in my own WOs, and that's when I get into trouble. So I thought I'd remind us both.)

Jeff: What's your predicted finish time in an event like that? Or is that just a silly question for that kind of event? :confused3

Krista: Wow, how Carter's grown! He's a looker. Check out that smile, everyone! I'm so glad to hear your training for the Pig is flying by and you're in the running groove. Remember, I expect to hear of a PR on this one!

As for the Oscars, I predicted 18/24 of the categories...about ave. for me. (Not that I agreed with the categories. "The Dark Knight" was robbed during the nomination process, as was "Wall-E.") I didn't think this year's batch of noms was particularly strong, but I liked the revamped Oscar show. If you were to rent a movie this weekend, yeah, I'd start with "Slumdog." It's pretty feel-good, which is kind of what I'm in the mood for these days, and it's well-done. Did it deserve best pic? That's another story.... Still, nothing wrong with a little life-affirming movie now and then.

As for me: Yesterday was an excellent day for running outside. It was sunny, and warm enough that I didn't need a hat and could take my gloves off. I forget how much I dislike running with gloves...

My back is much better, thanks. It was unrelated to pre-marathon injuries, just a little pull. It's still a little sore, but that's due to my Pilates DVD, which I've been modifying. I probably should take a Pilates class, but I don't know that I'm mentally strong enough for the snide comments of other participants. Oh, I know what you're thinking--no one does that. But they do. I hear these women at my FC in the locker room, and they do. And they take the Pilates class. Nice, huh? And, of course, they're the ones who are model-thin and perfectly coiffed. Anyway, it's DVD for me and after I'm 100% perhaps a class, non-Pilates, of course. (Boy, do I have issues or what? :rotfl2:)

Hello,
I am new to this board. Relatively new to running...Started at 35. (One and 1/2 years ago) Thinking about the Disney 1/2 next Jan 2010 but live in a cold weather clime.
My experience to date is 1 - 1/2 marathon (and one on the calendar for April), 1 - 10 mile, and 20 or so races from 5K - 10K.
Any advice about the trip, the race, training, the experience in general would be welcome!

:welcome: Lysa So glad you joined the group. Sounds like you already have the running base/experience for the half. People here are walkers, runners and everything in between. Lots swear by Marathoning for Mortals (MFM). I myself used Hal Higdon to train for the half in January.

Biggest pieve of advice is probably to commit SOON! The half is already 60% full and filled faster than the full. Keep an eye on it.

Travel planning is always good to do early--for the airfare, anyway. Disney hotel rates for 2010 are not out, but you can still book a room.

As for the experience....my favorite part of the marathon weekend (other than getting the gigunda Donald medal!) was seeing all the people on this board. There's always a meet and greet or two, and even if you travel solo, you're not alone.

Welcome to the group. Hope to meet you next year.

YES!!!!!! I got my wish--I'm running away from home next weekend to Disney! Got a reasonable airfare. That's the good news. The bad news is the Family 5k is full, so I won't be running anything (Yeah, I know, the half is still open, but I don't think so!). Will try to make it to POP meet to say hello.

Maura,

Just bandit the 5K run. No one checks bibs at the start or the finish. Just walk past those handing out the plastic medals at the end.

Mooshu wore her bib on one shirt, and it was covered the whole race by her long sleeve shirt. No one said anything to her or asked to see her bib.

Are you going back in January, 2010? I will be on the lookout for you with a beer in hand, just a couple of tenths of a mile before the finish line. (You :wave2:) (me:drinking1)

AFM: I went to my fun little park tonight after work to do 4 miles. Felt good and weather was GREAT! (don't be jealous because my weather is better than yours - not you Jeff! :rotfl: )
A week from now I will be driving in my car to WDW to meet up with Liz, Stacey, Kim and Brandie - Girls Weekend and get to celebrate my 40th birthday early!

Tracy: Love the socks! :thumbsup2

Debra: oooo coldstone...you make me drool :mickeybar

Maura: LOL I love your priorities! What kind of GS cookies might I ask? I still haven't found any here.

Allie: I bike a not terribly stiff pace (but not leisurely either!) for a little less than double my run (11 mpm to 12 mpm) and it's about the same calories-wise according to the garmin.

Jen: Sorry to hear about your running buddy
 It's definitely been hard to see my running buddy at home slow down.

Krista:  Wow Carter is so big and NO I cannot believe he is seven months old already! But I'm glad to see that you are getting him his ears early.

Lysa: Welcome!

As for me:
I've been running and cross training for the Crescent City Classic 10K (the day before Easter). Plus, I've been going nuts getting wedding stuff together, invitations are about to go out and I'm going to say there will be a lull after that (ha!). We have signed up for a Disney Cruise for our honeymoon and can I just say I'm excited!!! I've never been on a cruise (neither has my fiance), so it will be an adventure. It gives me some motivation to get through the semester. I probably won't do Marathon Weekend 2010, so this is my Disney dose, but hopefully I'll make it for 2011. I have teacher interview day coming up in late March, the day before my comprehensive finals :scared1: So I will be needing my running to keep me sane!
Happy running!

Claire Thin Mints--the only cookie really worth eating, IMHO (alright, let the flames begin!)

Liz Thx, I do know the meets at POR, but my typing fingers don't!
