Well definitely bring your clothing!!! If you're driving go ahead and bring bedding and toilitries(sp?) If you're flying bring your clothing and some toiltries(sp?) because you can get bedding, decorations, etc when you get down there.

Don't forget you are going to be going home with more stuff then what you brought. So remember that.

I'm not a person who really hangs up her clothes.. lol

But, for those of you who do.. hangers are VERY scarce the first couple weeks when you get to Orlando. Well, they were when I was there anyways. So, I'd definitely suggest that. Also, if you have a computer, I'd bring it.

-Bed risers! They'll raise your bed 6-8 inches or something...It adds a lot of storage room. I was able to put all of my suitcases and my laundry basket all under my bed.

I also would suggest pre-ordering things that you are going to buy once you're down moving in. You can order things on the Walmart website and then pick them up at the store in Orlando. This makes it muuuch easier. With so many people moving in at the same time a lot of things you may want will be gone. My mom and I went to Walmart, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Linens and Things before we got everyhting I'd need! "Site-to Store" will make sure you have everything you need all at once!!

-You'll want things like extra cooking pans and pots and baking sheets and stirring things. What they give you isn't all that great.
-Padding for your bed. They aren't very comfortable
-A t.v./dvd.vcr player
-laptop
-wireless router
-lots of hangers
-I had a hanging shoe rack in the closet for my shoes
-bulletin board/dry erase board (my roommates and I would write our schedules down every week so we'd know when everyone was working)
-pictures/decorations. Those apartments walls are very blank and bare.
-bathroom rug
-vacuum. You may not want to trudge all the way to the front desk to borrow one
-broom/swiffer
-a storage cart thing (like rubbermaid three drawer plastic thing) I had extra room in my room so I got one of these for extra drawer space. It was great.

That's all I can think of for now :)

bring a roll of toilet paper with you in your luggage. you can buy more, but it can be a bad situation to move in, need it, and not have it.

All three bathrooms had a role of TP when we moved in

i don't think it's necessary to bring extra pots and pans. the ones we had were fine. that's just one more thing you have to take down there with you and one more thing you have to bring back... and if you're flying it can get quite expensive.

The walmart near the vista way or w.e apartsments...the one the bus goes to...does anyone know the zip for that? if accepted...im gunna drive and ill use site-to-store, you just order the stuff you need online and it ships it to the walmart location..rather convienent eh.

adding to the list id say....

rugs -bathroom
ipod dock/alarm clock if you like to have music like i do
b/r shower caddy for your shampoos and such
door hanging towel rack
ive heard bed risers are useful too so you can put some things under your bed as space in the room is limited.

I'm curious as to how many clothes you should bring. How many shirts, jeans, dress pants for classes, etc.

Do we also need ice cube trays?

According to the Housing section of the website, "Refrigerator w/ ice maker" is one of the amenities.

I was wondering for past and new CP-ers.....what all would you suggest to bring with you? Just wondering! Thanks!:mickeybar :earsboy:

M O N E Y!!!!! Ok, let me explain. If you are a college student who has no monthly bills (i.e. credit cards to pay on, insurance of any kind, cell phone bill) you will do just fine money-wise. If you have several bills to pay every month, it may be very hard for you to have extra money to go out and actually do anything in Orlando. This was part of my experience anyway. I even had to borrow extra money from my parents during my CP program so that I could stay affloat and I came back in even more debt than when I had left. I'm not trying to scare anyone. However, I also worked in DAK which has the least amount of hours available of the 4 parks and we also had a LOT of CPs at Everest where I worked so hours were just above the 30 hour mark a week which is what they are required to give you. Do NOT misunderstand what I am saying.... I LOVED THE DISNEY CP and I do not regret doing it at all.. however, I don't think I am financially able to do it again.. haha. I did stay seasonal though and am going back next weekend to work a couple days and have a reunion with a couple of my roommates. So in summary, I suggest you save up around $600 to take with you to get you started and then just use your money wisely. :)

I havent been there yet but I think I'll most definatly be bringing a toaster oven. I use that thing more than a microwave! I hate weird soggy tasting foods that I feel microwaves do. Eww...gimmie some hot crunchy food!

This is what I am worried about. If I didn't have to worry about anything else, I think I'd be fine.. but I have my car insurance and a car payment (Also why I want to BRING my car.. if I'm paying for it every month I'd like to be able to actually use it, ha ha) as well as some other stuff. Guess I'll just have to save save save before going.

the front desk at the apartment complexes have a ton of things that you can check out. irons, ironing boards, brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners

a list of stuff that are in the apts is here:
http://www.wdwcollegeprogram.com/sap/its/mimes/zh_wdwcp/students/housing/housing_amenities.html

you can click the first 2 things on that list for a more detailed breakdown

They are NOT non-stick. The pots and pans supplied by them are old and not so nice. Even when using PAM/non-stick spray I had issues...Good thing one of my roommates brought nicer things with her.

From what I remember we had one large skillet/frying pan, a medium pot and a large pot and a baking sheet. They don't give you much. same with cooking utensils

You definetly want to bring money to get you through at least 2 weeks of living. You won't actually start working for a couple days after you get there and then your first pay check doesn't come for about 2 wks so your going to want to bring enough to get you through that time. Also keep in mind money for groceries, supplies, etc.

Golden_Eagle426
03-23-2009, 09:09 PM
One helpful hint... Try not to go too overboard on the groceries during the beginning. I found myself at work a lot and usually eating 1 or 2 meals a day, if that. You also might wanna discuss with the roomates on who's bringing what and general rules toward food (ie. sharing or "dont touch my food"). Saves a lot of headaches later. :thumbsup2

Plus, I dont know whether ya'll are driving or not but catching the bus to walmart/store can be a bit of a hassle if you're carrying a lot of stuff! Hope this helps ya'll out some!

Recommendations:

*SPACE SAVER BAGS. I used them when flying, and I was able to bring a TON more stuff. But thats something to get beforehand.

*FLY SOUTHWEST. You get two free bags, and you pick your seat. I hate to pay for my second checked item.

*DO SITE-TO-STORE FOR BEDDING. They have super cheap sheets at walmart. I bought mine for (don't quote me, im going off the top of my head) $6 (each for a flat sheet and then a fitted one). It was the mainstays brand. I just looked on the site, and couldn't find them, but I have seen it in stores around here. Even if you buy it here, then do site-to-store for the comforter, you'll save. I'm just going to use space saver bags, that's what I did last time and I still had room.

*MONEY FOR WORK SHOES. You dont know exactly where you're working, and what shoes they will require. I had to borrow money from my family to buy them in the beginning. There is the shoe truck that you can buy shoes from, and it comes out of your paycheck, however I didn't find it til after I bought my work shoes. (I bought something cheap to last until I could get better ones. My cheap ones we 12, and the better ones I bought were 20 from Payless)

*A GOOD ATTITUDE. Try, try, try not to get stressed out during that first day. I saw a lot of conflict that first day between roomies because one got stressed (mostly due to parents). Usually, its stupid stuff, nothing to do with Disney either, just people realizing all of what they need at walmart.

*TOILET PAPER. Others said they didn't have any; we had some, but it wasn't the best. I like soft TP. Just a roll in your suitcase (they actually have travel sized TP at Target for a dollar), and you'll thank yourself later.

*PICTURES FROM HOME. They can help once the homesickness sets in. Print a couple, like 3 - 5, to tape along your mirror, and you'll be glad you did.

*CLEANING SUPPLIES. Do site-to-store, just so you don't have to fight for the last air freshener for the bathroom. I highly recommend the Scrubbing Bubbles toilet wand (with the disposable heads), as it's cheap and works amazingly.

*THOSE TUB CLING THINGS SO YOU DON'T SLIP IN THE SHOWER. I wish I had had them. I always meant to buy them, but keep forgetting when I was at walmart. They're cheap, and thin, so slide it in your purse if you have to.

*ALARM CLOCK. My cell phone likes to turn itself off randomly, thereby turning off my alarm. Can't be late for work! I bought my alarm clock there that also played my iPod. Best $40 ever spent (Site-To-Store)

*SHOWER CURTAIN. Because you know someone's cleaning it when you HAVE to shower for work. Bring an extra one so you wont have that issue.

Some things that have crossed my mind. Its pretty early, so if I think of anything else, I will let you know.

RE: CLOTHES (how much to bring) - I recommend the following
3 pairs of shorts, and 2 pairs of jeans (if you're fall only, then one pair of shorts, the rest jeans. Its gonna cool down right after you get there.)
5 tops (casual, hang out type)
2 nice pants/skirts for class/networking opportunities
2 nice shirts for same reason
1 pair dress shoes
2 pair comfy shoes
2 pair flip flops
This is a bare minimum recommendation. Feel free to bring more (I know I will! lol)

For those of you over 21 you will want to bring a bottle opener and corkscrew.. my apt. was the only one in the bldg. with a corkscrew so we had people over all the time borrowing it.
Over the door shoe racks not only for your room cause you and roommate can use it to stash shoes, belts etc. but we also used a smaller one in our bathroom to place all of our random stuff like hair ties, chapstick whatever in.
Can opener we had one but it was very used (gross), I am guessing it was there since the begining of Vista.
Some nice professional clothes to wear to traditions and have those in one of your bags that your going to unpack first. I had traditions on my second day there and was able to have it iron and hanging in my closet while everything was still in by suitcases.
If you are driving, you don't have to drive everywhere. You can take the bus but if you are working like a late shift or an after normal hours event then do drive to work. I worked many events after hours and we (fellow cp's) would be stuck trying to call Vista to get a van to pick up if no one drove.
FYI for those on another timezone like say Pacific which is now three hours behind. Try and switch your sleep pattern while at home. It took me over a week to get use to the time difference. A few of us from AZ didn't go to bed till almost 4am the first night since it was still early to us and the traditions bus left at like 630am. It was rough first morning spent drinking alot of pop in class.

Hey!

Here's what helped me during my first program:

Hangers: like everyone has said, there are none in Orlando during move-in
Bed Risers: I stored my suitcases under my bed so I wouldn't take up closet space
Non-stick pan for eggs: I love those flat square ones!
Blender: I'm a smoothie girl and they don't provide one; they don't provide a toaster or coffee machine either
Tons of picture frames: i brought some pictures from home, but i mostly filled up my frames with pictures i took there
Dry erase/cork board: to make notes and see where everyone is
Full length mirror to hang on door: gotta perfect that Disney Look!!
Shower Caddy: a lot easier than having to worry about people using your shower stuff
Alarm Clock: a MUST have!
Plastic Drawers: you get like 3 drawers in the dresser that they provide and I needed a lot more space than that!
First Aid kit: this helped me out so many times
Bed Table Lamp: there's not much lighting in the bedrooms
Router: you definitely need this to get wireless internet. just make sure to set up a password so only your roomies can use the network-we had so many people stealing our signal at first and it made it sooo slow
DVD Player: and a TV if no one else is bringing it
Bed Pad: the beds are not that uncomfortable, but it always helps to get the best sleep you can
Camera: i took over 6,000 pictures in my short 4 months down there!

OK so this list may seem long, but it;s jsut the everyday thing that you use at home that make living there a lot more comfortable.

I suggest DEFINITELY bringing a car. My didn't have one and the bus system isn't bad at all, I just know if I wasn't lucky to meet people with a car, I would not have enjoyed myself as much. It's so much easier to have the freedom of going where you want, when you want.

I would try to bring as much with you as possible: even toiletries because if you have to rebuy everything down there, your $300 dollars they suggest bringing will go in 1 trip to walmart :(

This is a bare minimum recommendation. Feel free to bring more (I know I will! lol)

Thank you so much for this info. I booked my flight with Southwest per your suggestion and saved a bundle and I can check two bags! Thanks a lot!:woohoo::hug:

Hey everyone,

For those flying Southwest.. here is a little tip I found after traveling for six months on the road. You can check boxes on Southwest the largest size is 20x20x20 inches. Just make sure to watch the weight on whatever you pack anything over 50lbs and under 90lbs is going to cost an extra bag fee. I think its like 20 dollars.

Tengo una Pregunta!!!!!!!

Ok about the bedriser thing. I'm afraid of bedrises. (1) I cant trust plastic up my bed up... (2) They might be too high, I'm short. Ok the question is, is it possible to fit your suitcases/duffels under the bed w/o the bedrisers or are the beds that low???

They most likely wont fit. We have two closests in our apartment though that fit all of our suitcases.

I love Southwest! I have half a mind to write them and thank them for their cheap fare and checked baggage amenities. It really helps those of us who aren't driving down.

Here's a thought: You could pack your things in boxes then collapse them once you get there and unpack. Then store the flat boxes under your bed or in the closet. Btw I don't think I will be using that much closet space. (I hide my skeletons elsewhere, lol) I will most likely use it for hanging up my business clothes and a few suitcases. the drawers on the other hand....I fold most of my clothes. If you don't get bed risers I am sure we can work something out. The last thing I want happening is you falling off the bed. :guilty:

IF you are driving....or even mailing clothes to yourself I found these nifty luggage ideas:

So you dont have to worry about wrinkled clothes and having to put everything on hangers when you get there...I'm sure it's collapsible too

If you do fly with boxes to orlando line the inside of the box with a contractor trash bag (heavy duty) or regular bag and then throw your stuff in there. Duct tape all the sides and then put your info on it. I would do this just incase it rains so your stuff won't get wet. Also don't know if they still do this but at the end of the program UPS use to come onsite to the apts. so you could mail stuff home or buy boxes at a discount.

This time around Southwest wasn't so nice to me! I tried booking my flight w/ them and it would cost $179. My United flight was only $134 and with me checking 2 bags it will cost me another $40 (i think, not sure) so about $5 cheaper then Southwest, lol.

Those boxes are actually pretty awesome. Thanks for posting them!

Anyway, for those not bringing cars, we could always rent them from the different car rental places at the resort ... what do you think about that idea?

Just keep in mind that the minimum age to rent a car is 25. I'm not sure if this is a nationwide law, but that just seems to be the industry norm. :confused3 I don't know if that would be a problem for you, but I'd hate for you to get down there counting on renting a car and not be able to!

If you find a place that will rent to people younger than that, let me know, please! I would definitely be interested.

I am so glad I use to be a travel agent... You can in the state of Florida rent a car if your under the age of 25. You will have to pay an extra underage driver fee usually between $25-50 a day. You will also either need to provide proof of insurance they prefer full coverage or they will make you purchase there insurance. The avis at I want to say its the Doubletree at Downtown Disney (don't quote me) but one of the DTD hotels has an avis in it they will give you a discount if your a cast member. They were also cooler about renting to underage if you are a cast member.
You will also need a credit card in your name to rent. If you don't have a credit car then eagle rent a car will rent to you with either cash deposit or a debit card and they will place a hold on the debit card till you return it.
Hopes this helps.. This is just general since each rental place has there own policy since you are most likely to be renting from a branch. There is also a car rental at the Magic Kingdom Car Care Center and I at the Swan and Dolphin don't remember what agency though

If your friends are comming to visit you while you are working there. I would recomend that you get your friends a discount room on property have them take the ME (magical express) bus to the hotel and then rent a car near/on property. You will save in aiport taxes, concession fees and tolls.

Thanks for the suggestions! Is the actual car rental fee usually any cheaper if you rent a car away from the airport, or do you just save on the taxes, etc.?

dopeyrunner
04-08-2009, 02:21 PM
For the most part it is cheaper to rent a car at one of the local branches just because they is usually less demand for the cars and they want to rent them out and make the income. Also your taxes and fees are less like say you rent a car at NYC JFK airport there is about 35% additional add on to the base price due to taxes versus taking a cab into the city and renting it there. Right now I know there is a deal at the airport to rent cars on the cheap but you have to drop them off out of state and it's only through the end of april.
In addition, watch out renting your car through a third party website like travelocity or expedia they could say that your location has cars available for rent when in fact the branch could be out. It happened to my brother.lol...
Mousesavers.com website has a link for rental car discounts code that can save you anywhere between 10-25% off your rental. Just copy the code and paste it on the car rentals website.

Well, depending on when you arrive, you might be able to get someone with a car to help you. I am planning on staying on property the night before the May 27th check-in and I am trying to find someone to split a room with. I'm driving down and can help someone who is flying get their stuff to Vista Way on the 27th if we are staying at the same resort or splitting a room. Plus then you can just take the Disney bus for free from the airport to the hotel since you will be considered a resort guest that day.

They have a deal right now for all the value resorts that you can get a hotel room May 26th for only $77. If you split this by two people than it is easily cheaper than either arriving the 27th and taking a shuttle to Vista Way or staying off property that night and having to get a taxi to the hotel and then to Vista Way the next day.

In california, the policy is pretty much the same. If you are under 25, you have to pay an extra charge and also like to see proof of insurance. I also think that it is a good choice to rent from one of the branches at the resort instead of renting directly from the airport because of cost and taxes. Also, if I do get into the program, I'll be flying in from california so I don't really want to drive after an 8 hour flight! Also, as mentioned before, some branches give you a discount if you are a CP! Yay for that! Yay for mousesavers! That's pretty much where I got the idea of renting a car.

FYI car rentals are considered in 24 hr increments. So a 1 day rental would be like a 8am pick up on monday with a 8am drop off on tuesday anything under or over can result in additional cost. I know under right, but they are assuming you are returning it with in a certain time period and Hertz is known to charge extra for early drop off.

I've looked through this thread and I think I've seen to bring a wireless router. I just wanted to make sure that the apartments don't already come with it. And if I don't bring one how do we connect to the internet? Are there two ethernet plugs in every room? Some in the living area?

Thanks!

The apt do NOT have wireless internet. There are like 2 plugs (at least in my old apt) near the kitchen.

What should I bring/leave at home?
Please remember that you will have one to seven other roommates in your apartment. Please be courteous.

Pets are not allowed.
Bikes are not allowed due to lack of storage.
Rollerblades are not allowed within your company-sponsored housing complex.
Candles are not allowed, as our fire code prohibits burning them.

I think when it says "Rollerblades are not allowed within your company-sponsored housing complex", that Disney is saying these things are not allowed in your apartments for space sake but if you had a car if you stored it in there it would be ok...I'm just guessing here...I might have interpreted it wrong.

Hey that $77 deal is great.. gotta let The Mother know. I am staying there the night before as well. I know pop century is my favorite to stay at, I'll speak with The Mother about splitting a room. I live in FL so I can even get a lower discount for FL rate I think. PM me with any details if you wanna.

Thank to everyone who is giving the ideas for what to bring. I need to save up more money... ugh. I wonder if they Rent out wireless routers?

Actually, its an insurance reason. All it takes is one person to ruin it for everyone. Security told my apt one night (when our AC broke at 1130 PM, and they brought a portable one) about it, because we asked why. That was the reason they gave. One person ruined it for everyone.
