View Full Version : My Recession Story -(anybody wanna bail me out?)

Just joking about the bail out part. So, we have always wanted to stay at the Contemporary. My DS10 loves the "monorail resort" (I know - we call all 3 of them monorail resorts - but he only calls the CR this.) So I thought this was going to be the year. I booked with DU back in the fall and have been paying it off little by little. The third week of January came and I only owed $500 on the trip. I was pumped!

Then, the ice storm hit. We were without power for a week. DS missed a week of school. They elongated his school year to June 1. Our vacation was scheduled to begin May 24. yuck. His school district requires a Dr.'s excuse if you hit 6 days of absences. He has 3 already. I couldn't just pull him out of school for a week without them requiring a Dr.'s excuse and pursuing me for being truent. SO - I emailed Marla, the fabulous, at DU and explained the situation. She researched and we couldn't get the Contemporary for our new dates. :( But we got the Beach Club for about $1000 more.

Ok, so trotting along about another week and we run into another snag. My DH is a youth minister. The recession is hitting churches hard. They are getting ready in March to cut his annual pay by 10%. Ok - I think - we will make due. . . then we went to get our taxes done. . . Our CPA made a $1000 mistake which we will have to pay this year. He is a friend of the family, and it was an honest mistake. So I felt bad for him because he felt so bad.

What really made me feel bad, though was the fact that we are down $1000 that I had planned to pay off my vacation with!!!

SO - the fabulous Marla received another email from me. And now we are going to be staying at the Bob Varley resort - Pop Century. ;)

We have always wanted to try Pop - we like to try something new each time - All Stars, to Poly, to AKL, etc. So this is fine.

My beloved "monorail resort" will have to wait until the recession is over.

We are so blessed to be able to take our son to WDW every year. What have I to complain about? Nothing.

Have a great day!
Angie

Angie,

It is wonderful to see that you are keeping a positive outlook on the situation, and not letting it ruin your trip. So many times, we see people posting that their trip is ruined because they couldn't get their favorite resort or the ADR that they wanted. It is wonderful to hear that you aren't going to let this keep you from enjoying the magic.

Wishing you much pixie dust on your trip! pixiedust:

I am glad to hear that you are still able to go to Disney! Maybe you can have a meal at Chef Mickey's so your family can still get a little bit of CR.

Have a fun trip!!

Thank you for helping the spread of the "good karma!" - There are millions of Debbie Downers everywhere...I know times are tough and I know there are lots of folks who really are having the worst time of their life...I'm grateful too that I can take my kids to WDW this year amongst all the other stuff I'm grateful for..

I hope that you LOVE POP! It's one of my favorite places...not for me, but my kiddos love it!

I hope you have a pop-tabulous and pop-tastic time.

Compared to what you are used to, it may feel like slumming to you. Think of as an adventure instead.

Pop is way out fun in its decor. I enjoyed my stay there in December. Of course, I was in the parks most of the day.

Have lots of fun. You are fortunate to be able to take the trip.

I just had that same situation last trip. I had to help my sister out because she lost her job. POP was fun, esp for the kids. I have a bad back and need a hot tub otherwise I dont think the mods have anything over POP. I am sure you will have a great time!!

Sorry about the CR, but you'll love the pop! You can spend time at the CR anyway - rent a boat, have dinner. Enjoy your vacation and the time with your family! you have a great attitude and I know you'll love the pop. We love doing the walk down memory lane reading all the signs and exploring all the cool things around the resort. Plus the food court is great - I love the shrimp lo mein, the salmon dinner and other meals, too. And we love to get ice-cream at night. Everything pop is a great store, too. Don't forget the goofy pop jet fountains. Maybe your son will find a new favorite!

It is refreshing to see you look at the positives of the situation, now a days you don't get a lot of that. This is especially true when the news just likes to dwell on the negative of everything.

For what it's worth I love POP. I have stayed onsite 5 times and 4 of them were POP. Maybe you guys could do a character meal at Chef Mickey's so your son can enjoy some time in the monorail resort.
