I'd like to think that it's never to early to meet people, so I'm starting the thread for the Wonders 4-night sailing on the Dec 19th. It's going to be my first Disney cruise and I can't wait! :goodvibes Is there anyone crazy like me to book this far in advance?

Actually, yes...that would be me. I looked for a thread a couple of days ago and didn't see one open yet. I'm new to the boards and didn't know how...some things I couldn't/can't do because I haven't posted enough yet. So I'm glad you were able to get this started.

This WAS going to be our first cruise, but my son's are graduating...one from high school and the other is a promotion to high school...at the end of May. When each of them graduate they get to pick a vacation. Since the economy is so yucky right now and all of the "unknowns" about where the USA will be in another 2 years, they were concerned that we might not be able to go on that vacation. So they chose to go on a cruise for their graduation trip...it will be a cruise only.

BUT...if there are no unforseen troubles, this 2010 trip will be our second, we'll have an upgraded room, we'll spend Christmas at WDW and be celebrating my younger son's and my birthdays. I'm very excited.

My name is Tina, by the way...and I'm looking forward to getting to know you over the next (almost) 2 years on these boards and then put a face to the words on the ship. I'm interested in seeing how many others book this early. I was encouraged to book as early as possible...so I did. :dance3:

pirate: Well, hello there, Matey and welcome aboard! pirate:

Thar don't be much action on this thread. Me hopes it picks up as our sailin' gets a nigh bit closer. I'd be lyin' if I said I don't be countin' the days 'til we sail either. Until then, I'm happy to be makin' your acquaintance. :sail: It's sure to be a Merry Christmas, indeed!

I have not been on the board much for the last several months due to life hogging most of my attention , but I managed to sneak a few minutes to say 'Hi' to those of you who have introduced yourself so far. I most likely won't be around until after July either due me moving to a new job. While I'm very excited about that I still have to find a place to stay, PDQ too. In any case, I'm glad I'm not the only one count day down till Christmas 2010.

Hi all. I just booked this today. We had booked the 11 night Christmas cruise, but my 12 year old doesn't want to be away at Christmas , so we switched to this cruise. It pained me to cancel the 11 nighter (sigh), but at least we'll get a short one in. More later . . .

We are looking at booking this cruise using our DVC points...should we, or shouldn't we? :) Hope to call in the morning to check availability and to ensure that all is well with our points, and I am sure we will be joining everyone! This will be our 4th Disney Cruise!!! The only way to go :)

Aaargh! No, don't do it!!! Rent your points for $10 per point on the rent/trade thread, and then use the cash to book your cruise - much more economical. You will use fewer points in order to raise the cash for your trip. We booked with points on our first Disney cruise and then regretted it - used soooo many points. :scared1:

I know what you mean, but we haven't had good experiences in the past with renting out points, plus I don't want to go through the hassle of the use years since the points are going to be a combination of 2010 (borrowed in points) and 2011 points...thank you for the advise though..I will talk with DW about it and see what she thinks...we have booked two other cruises with points in the past...thank you again :)

Bummer about your bad experience with renting out points. I've only done it twice and was lucky both times. Now we've sold our large contract (we kept a small 50 point one). Of course after we sold it, my mother decided that she wants to take the entire family on a big WDW trip. Now I'm gonna need to rent some points - ha!

Good luck with whatever you decide! I'm very curious to see the West Coast itinerary for 2011. If its Alaska, we may cancel this trip and replace it with that one. Am anxiously awaiting any news . . .

We actually just added on 100 points at Bay Lake, and we got our 2009 and 2010 use year points...so I sorta look at that as an added incentive! :) Thank you for the insight though! We had the 2009 Thanksgiving cruise booked, but had to cancel due to some unforeseen bills that came up! I think we all know how that is...so when looking at the DVC point chart and how unbelievably of a low season this cruise is, I figured we would get our holiday cruise after all!! :) What category are you guys booked in again? I am thinking we will go with a Cat. 9...

We're booked in cat 9 as well - love being able to see outside. I toyed with the idea of booking a verandah, but I think I would rather spend the additional funds on margheritas instead of a balcony. ;) This time I asked for a starboard room. Someone pointed out to me that you have better views of Castaway Cay with rooms on that side of the ship. I had never thought of that.

Which Thanksgiving cruise were you on? We're booked on the week long Eastern for this year. We booked when the rates first came out + we had a 10% onboard discount that we used. In total, the price wasn't too bad for all 4 of us. I've never done that itinerary, so I'm really looking forward to it.

We were booked on the 4 Night Thanksgiving Cruise...now I am looking at the point charts and thinking of maybe going with a Cat. 11...we stayed in one of those a few years ago and it wasn't bad at all...made for a very nice night's sleep with it being pitch black! :) Plus, if we go that route..we save 50 points, plus we then have enough to do a quick getaway to Hilton Head over Spring Break, and enough points to get us a night before and after the cruise at WDW...how is that for points management?? :rotfl2:

I say squeeze as many vacations out of those points as you can! We've never stayed in an interior room before. We switched to a category 12 when sale fares came out on the Mediterranean trip ($4,000 for 11 nights for all 4 of us - probably never see rates like that again!!!!), but then we got lucky and were upgraded to a cat 9. Oh, and on that trip, we met someone who had booked a cat 11 with points (lots of points I might add). When the sale fares came out, she wanted to cancel her points reservation to book the sale cash price, but couldn't. She was not a happy camper! Thats partially where my aversion to mixing cruises and points came from. I keep watching for more of these cat 12 discounts. I saw one over spring break that showed up for a couple weeks and then disappeared. Its always interesting to try and get in the heads of those pricing these cruises!

I love Hilton Head in the springtime. We stayed at the villas there before we bought into DVC. It was a bit cool for the water, but I loved the weather + all the flowers were blooming.

I was thinking that if we do take this cruise, we would stay a few nights pre-cruise as well. We haven't done Universal in years, so I was thinking of possibly doing that for a change.

For this Thanksgiving's cruise, I was able to snag the very last Bay Lake Towers studio overlooking Magic Kingdom the night pre-cruise (this was calling at exactly 9:00am 7 months out), so we bought tickets to MVMCP. We've never done that before - think I'm more excited about it than my kids! :yay:

I'm here! At the beach this week.

We're booked in a cat 9 as well - Starboard side further back than you - I think about 6-7 rooms back from the last set of elevators. I like hopping on the elevators and going straight up to the pool and drink kiosk.

Its hard to get excited about this trip right now. Our Eastern cruise is less than 4 months away (I remember when it was as far out as this one). Also, I'm patiently waiting for the 2011 itineraries to be released. We may switch cruises - so much up in the air right now.

Naw, don't be jealous. We are probably making a mistake, because then I will be spoiled and expect it every time. But with a family of 5, I think I would feel crowded in even a cat 4. And I am claustrophobic, so adjoining inside rooms aren't really an option. Maybe, though, if I love the cruise and want to do it often. We'll see

I've never stayed in an interior room either - feel like I need to see some daylight. At some point, you could always try 2 connecting cat 9's. Then you could have lots of space and have 2 huge windows. Ah, but concierge service and that huge balcony will be quite nice!! Enjoy!

Thanks for the link Jodie. We have one of those staterooms...the wider but shallower ones. It looks pretty roomy, and that balcony does look fabulous!!!! I could probably sit out there all day and not visit anywhere else on the ship, esp. with free room service. I have a feeling 4 nights won't be long enough.

I had subscribed to this thread, but never got an message that you had replied. And I can't find where to look for my subscriptions...still trying to get my bearings here! Edit: (I found it)

It depends on the itinerary. There are rumors of both Hawaii and Alaska. We've been to Hawaii. We loved it, but I think of Hawaii as a land based trip - not sure I want to cruise there. If the ship goes to Alaska, however, I don't think I can turn that down. Apparently the news will be released on Friday - should be interesting!!

I don't always get notified of responses either - not sure why.

Even if you were sleeping in a broom closet, 4 days wouldn't feel like long enough! The longest cruise we've done was 11 nights. Usually I'm ready to go home after vacationing for that long, but I didn't want to get off the ship! Its probably better to start with a shorter cruise and progress to longer ones. Once you've done a long one, the 3 and 4 nighters seem short.

My dream cruise is the 15 night Panama Canal - DCL has only run this as a repo cruise, during a time when my kids are in school. Would love to do that one.

That seems to be the current speculation. The Wonder should do the Mex Riviera most of the year - then re-route to Alaska during the summer - or Hawaii at some point. I guess we'll find out Friday!

So, I transferred my res on this cruise to the July 5th Alaska cruise today. I wanted to get those tier 1 prices while they last, and holy cow, they have raised deposits! I was able to get a 50% deposit on the Alaska trip since I had a 50% on this one. Otherwise, we would have had to pay a whopping $600 per person for a trip almost 2 years out!! Crazy!

I'm cruising this Thanksgiving, and I will probably rebook this cruise if prices don't go up by then.

I am a Virginia grandma who will be traveling with my son's family from Pennsylvania. It will be my son, dtr. in-law and their 8 yr. old dtr., plus me.
We have been booked forever, but I didn't think anyone had started a thread yet.
This is their first Disney Cruise (and at Christmas!!) so right now I think I'm more excited than them because I know what to expect.
We're staying at a DVC villa at Saratoga Springs for three nights before the cruise and will get to experience all the holiday magic at the park too.:santa: Life is good.
We're booked into a cat. 4 so I guess the chance of being upgraded on board is nil. Although I wouldn't fight it if they wanted to move us to concierge service.:rotfl:

Unfortunately my husband is not going to be able to come with us as he does not have enough vacation time. We are going to be at WDW for a week in March, 2011 for Spring training and this November we are going to Hawaii. Sadly, he does not get as much time off as me!

Hey y'all-

A few more new DCL cruisers checking in. Myself, DW, her parents, her sister & brother-in-law, and her niece (8) and nephew (9) will all be sailing in Cat 9 rooms. Most of us (save DW and her parents) haven't even been on a cruise of any kind, so we're all wicked excited. It's taking the place of Christmas for her side of the family.

Katy and I are going to do a land trip beforehand, staying a few nights at POP and hitting up MVMCP....the party is also going to be new for us.

DD B'Day is May 28, 2009 and yes her favorite character is Mickey. Mickey and Minnie were her first fur characters she met at WDW at age 5 months. Most recent character encounter was Pooh and Tigger over Memorial day for her first B'day and she really liked them too.

I'm so glad she has enjoyed her character encounters! We are counting down and can't wait to introduce our DD to the characters. I'm not sure what to expect as far as the cruise goes but I'm sure we will have a great time! My DS asks every day if we are leaving for "Mickey's Big Boat". He is soooo excited!

This is our 2nd Disney Cruise. Looking forward to the extra nt. Did the 3 nt Wonder in 2008. What do you do at the extra at sea day?

Anyone going with older "kids" ours are 17 and 21, girls.

Do they do anything special for the holidays on the ship? What's there to do differently/special on the whole day at Sea?

Now that more people have posted, is anyone wanting to do the FE exchange? If we are mostly 1st time cruisers (we are), maybe not, but I think I want to make an FE anyway because they are so cute. Just a thought...

Not to sound dumb, but what is an FE exchange? Anybody with older teens?

altiek
07-13-2010, 03:44 PM
Not a dumb question, I didn't know what it was until I joined this board. I believe there is a sticky in the cruise thread that has all the info, but it is called a fish extender. It's a pocket dodad that hangs from the fish outside the stateroom door and everyone signed up puts little presents for each other in it throughout the cruise. There is also a thread with ideas for homemade presents. I think it started out as people giving gifts that were native/associated with their state or country. I may just have my pocket thing made and put little trinkets for my own kids if no one else wants to do it.

For you other question, I will be traveling with a 15 y.o. boy...I don't know how old a teenager you were thinking of. I don't think I posted that info way back last August when I signed up...it's me, DH, 15 y.o. SS, 12 y.o. SD, and 2 y.o Son

Yay, Daisy, that's awesome!!!! Thanks so much for volunteering to do the leg work. I officially sign up....

Our stateroom is 8534, and it's me, DH, and 3 kids.

I hope more people sign up, but if not, the goodies won't take up much luggage space :)

Hi got your questions, but site wouldn't let me PM you... so, here goes...Use Palo for your least favorite dining room. Request your favorite dining room for night 1 and 4, but... Animator's only does the show ONCE, so no use hoping to see the show again, on night four... it doesn't.
The extra day, you float around the Bahamas, but there's tons of extra stuff (not on the 3 nighter to do) repeat after me, everybody...."CHECK your personal navigator''!

There's usually a disney big wig aboard, on longer cruises... you could see anybody from an imagineer, an executive, a senior animator, to disney of broadway execs.. holding seminars aboard. Great chances to hit the theatres, during the daytime, and get great disney insider stories, and a door prize.

There's also the backstage tours of the showroom, costume closets, galley, bridge, ship art, and wine tastings, etc.

Look for Palo to add the brunches as well... highly recommend.

You can go to the forward lounge (deck 3, in front of the lobby) upon boarding, and change both your dining seating, dining rotation, and book Palo dining... all in one room.

holiday decorations are in full swing... full tree in lobby, complete with mickey ornaments. the gingerbread house should be in the rail of the promenade lounge... Look for all the christmas ornaments and songs you could ever want and snow on castaway cay (I promise). There's nearly always Santa aboard, for last minute Christmas wishes, and even more... if you ever do the Christmas cruise itself.... Just got off that one.... I'll not ''''spoil the magic'''!

This year, for pin trading, I'm bringing the international Santa pooh bears... the complete set, on the large cards.... eat your heart out!
The officers usually beat me up, wanting the one from each of their home countries! great fun.

lovetotravel07...there's always the hidden mickey's, all over the ship. go find the DVD... hidden treasures of the disney cruise line... study up... and see how many you can find...
I'll get you started, all the gold buttons, on all the officer's white dress uniforms...

lovetotravel07: extra sea day? there's movies, golf in the lobby, art auctions, ship tours (bridge, backstage, galley, ship art), seminars (guest big wigs, wine, food prep, cooking, decorating,) mainstage actor interviews, pool games, spa, trivia, scavenger games, karaoke, character greets, palo brunches, pin trading, shops on board, dance lessons, aerobics,... or hunting hidden mickeys....or.... kick back and relax....

well, for openers, there's over 40 characters aboard, including some 8 princesses (if you can name 'em all.) Fortunately, not all of them come out for meet and greet/autographs/pictures. some are mainstage/theatre only.

Beat it to the disney store, and get you a peter pan, or capt hook costume (whichever) in his size... the pictures onboard will be great memories. Ditto for DD... you won't believe princess gathering, when all the little girls dress up to meet their favorites. (complete with the slippers, gloves, tiaras... NEAT! vintage disney!)

Just checking in and I see lots of new posters.

I'll have to read up on the FE. Probably great for my sister to do as her kits are 5 and 8.

We just got back from our first cruise with DD, Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas. It was great. We are now looking forward to the Disney cruise in less than 3 months.

Just made final payment and got our Dinner reservations made for Palo and Nursery reservation for DD that evening as well. Not sure about other times as I get the feeling she'll be with us most of the time and we won't need the nursery. :)

Sorry fellow cruisers, but it turns out we will not be on this cruise after all. For a variety of reasons, we have had to move our cruise to Christmas 2011. We are now on the Dec 18, 2011 cruise on the Dream. I really wanted to cruise this Christmas, but it just was not to be. :sad2:

The good news is we went from an Cat 11 inside cabin to a Cat 8D window cabin for about $250! And we are still on Deck 5, which is our favorite.

Y'all have a great time, and say "hi!" to Mickey for us!

Guys,

I booked for the Dec 19th 4 night bahamas on the Wonder during the first week of October and the amount ran for 1,500 for an adult inclusive of everything (vacation protection). I am trying to understand how much of a difference it would be if you book earlier. Can somebody give me a idea as to how much i would have saved if I had booked earlier and also how much earlier it should have been.
