I have a huge daylily that REALLY needs to be split this fall - but I just don't have the heart to do it. The thing is giant - about 6 feet across - but I can't bring myself to split it. I know it would be best for the plant, and I would have 2 gorgeous lillies next year, but I cringe at the thought of sticking that shovel right thru it. :( :(
I also have 2 mums that have about had it. They have spread and are really sad looking - very sparse. I know I should dig those up and toss them - but they are alive and it kills me to do it. Oy. Does anyone else have problems splitting or tossing?

Removing plants and discarding really does bother me, but dividing does not. I consider it a birth of a new plant - not the loss of one! :)

Dividing doesnt hurt but throwing out a pretty weed does. My sister informed me last night that my white dame's rocket is a weed...I love the great accent it adds to my blooming purples this time of year.

Dividing doesn't bother me so much as sharing and the person you shared with doesn't replant it soon enough(after begging for a section)and the shared plant dies. Susan

Amid chaos,
I found a scarlet pimpernel in the lawn the other day. Those cute little orange flowers are so adorable! :)

redd45- I feel your pain! After 3 straight years of giving the same 2 people purple coneflower plants AND rubeckia, I have given up and just smile and ignore them when they ask for more. Hey, you DO have to water a new transplant and also mark where it is so you don't pull it up as a weed...

I like dividing plants. It's alot of work. That part I hate. But I usually divide and replant all the pieces. I did that with hostas yesterday. So satisfying. I now have a new garden to tend to - watch it grow, nurture it and love it.
I have to admit, though, I hate dividing and tossing. Seems like such a waste. There must be SOMEONE in the world who needs all the extras.....just wish I knew that person!

I have divided a few plants and I agree... It is life adding new life... I hate to kill anything but somethings need to be pruned... I too have kept a few mums past what their time...

amid chaos, don't ya know that a weed is just a plant (any Plant) that is growing where it is unwelcome. If you like your dame's rocket and welcome it, then in your garden it is not a weed. :)

I love dividing and adding new life or a new garden to my bed collection. This is the first year that I am so happy with my gardens and my husband tells me it's because I didn't give it away this year. He's right I'm always generous with the neighbors to give them plants.
I just wish a few would also share some are greedy and I've decided not to share with those few any more. They just take and take but never share back. That's the part I don't like.
