maroo: The more I think about it, the more I think that I do want to dress up for the party!! I'm definitely with you on the comfort issue; and Billy is very fussy about costumes, so his needs to be kept simple. :thumbsup2
Charleston Princess: Thank you! Unfortunately, we have lots and lots of time to think up some good costume ideas! :lmao:
** I think I'd really like us to try this while we're there!!

I just sent an e-mail to the author of that blog entry. Hopefully, she can answer that question!! :thumbsup2

I was wondering why Billy wasn't smiling in any of the pictures that night, then I realized that every time I took a pic, he would say, "Arrrgh!", like any good pirate would!! :lmao:
See his left hand making a "hook" ?!

Love the old Halloween pics Kathy! My girls were witches this year too! For Disney, I debated back and forth about the grown-ups dressing up and finally decided on a group Halloween shirt (we called ourselves the Smashing Pumpkins since our shirts were orange) as I couldn't make the call for a "theme" to our costumes! But there are so many cute themes on here for groups. 101 Dalmations (Tricia might like the idea of being Cruella, the rest could be simple t-shirts with black dots all over, and puppy ears of course), Peter Pan (Billy would make a great Hook), just so many things out there! I really enjoyed seeing people dressed up as a theme! Too cute! :goodvibes

Love the costume pics. Too funny about Billy saying you are a Queen. At least Billy likes face paint, Thomas won't let any one paint his face. He didn't want to have a mustache when he was Hook last year. Kaylee wants to be a witch this year, she said she does not want to wear any Princess costumes :sad2:.

Oh, but he didn't love it, not one bit!!

Matching shirts are so cool (and so much more comfortable!) But I suppose we will be dressing up a bit more!
I think Tricia and her cousin want to "match"...but they don't want the pirate theme (so far). Billy is set on being pirates with Daddy, and that I should be a queen.
I guess I will just have to be the Pirate Queen!! :rotfl:

Do I have what it takes to be E-V-I-L??
Tricia and Catie have been texting each other over the past hour...
(Whatever happened to talking on the phone??)
Anyway, you'd never know it was :shamrock: March... the two have been discussing possible Halloween Costumes for MNSSHP!! :confused3
And I'll have you know that I had absolutely nothing to do with it! I've hardly mentioned the trip at all... perhaps a few comments to Ed about my impending call to make our resort reservation on Tuesday... that's it!
(Of course, once Tricia told me what she and her cousin were discussing.... well, she started it!!) I may have been persuaded to talk about our plans just a teeny bit more! :rolleyes1
So, they started out thinking they would dress up as Eighties' mall rats..... the big hair...the flourescent-colored clothes...the rubber bracelets...you remember, right?? (!)
Well, now my DNiece is suggesting that they go as something more Disney-related!! She thought, perhaps they might want to be Cinderella's evil stepsisters.
"But, then we would have to have Cinderella in order for it to work," moaned Tricia. That's when I suggested that I could dress as the stepmother...
Tricia still looks doubtful....I don't think she likes the idea of her mother being a part of "their" costume theme, but she text the idea to her cousin, anyway.
Now, the question is.... could I make Lady Tremaine look enough like a queen to please Billy??
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j190/alien4112004/cartoons/clipstepm1.gif
Didn't she wear some kind of a tiara when they all went to the Ball?? :scratchin
I don't think he'd like that hair at all, though....
Kathy
I think the idea is cool, myself*
*I'm resisting the urge to make a snarky comment ending in "what 80's mall rat stuff?" :rotfl::rotfl:

I love the idea! What costume do you think your husband would wear?
I keep contemplating costume ideas and I love the way some families pick a particular movie as inspiration. I think it would be fun to be Cruella and have my kids be Dalmations. But I don't know who DH would be. :confused3

Texting Tid-Bits...
So, as of bedtime.....
Catie likes the Evil Stepsisters idea, but Tricia doesn't want to wear a long dress on the rides....
Tricia wanted to stick with the 80's idea, but Catie said she thought it wasn't Disney enough....
Tricia doesn't want to look like everyone else. "Mom, I want us to be unique!"
I told her that so long as their costumes were age-appropriate, I did not mind what they decided and whether we all "matched" or not.
Then she thought it might be cool, er, "random" if all the girls dressed as flappers and the two boys were gangsters.... I had to point out that Billy was firmly decided upon being a pirate and not likely to change his mind.
Tricia is now thinking the girls should go as Wilma and Betty from the Flintstones!
:hyper2: They're going to change their minds a thousand times before the final decision is made!
The boys are so easy..... I'll probably stick with them and be their Pirate Queen!!

You are right. Sigh.
Tricia came into the bathroom while I was helping Billy get washed up this morning, and proceded to read from her "list" of possible costume ideas.
I noticed the Ugly Stepsisters were at the bottom of the list, though. I don't think Tricia is crazy about looking ugly. Scary is acceptable, ugly is not.
I told her she and Catie had plenty of time to decide!!

You have got me wanting to try the MNSSHP!! :rotfl2: It would be so much fun for the whole family to dress up & go. I remember a few years back, we were having dinner at 1900 Park Fare on the night of a MNSSHP & there was a family there, all dressed up. The father was the Hulk. :rotfl2: Everyone else that we saw was a Disney character, except him. It was so funny to us because he was like trying to be all bad or whatever. :rotfl2:
I don't think I could get my Dh to do it. I may talk to him about it and see how he feels. Since we changed our vacation to Sept, there are only two the week that we go.
Oh my goodness.... I had big hair in the 80's too!!!! I have to flat iron it now or it would still look like that!:lmao:

Hi!
I sure have enjoyed your trip reports! Your kids are great and for all her quirks I think AR is about the cutest thing on the planet. ;)
You and I are in the same Costuming For Teenage Girls boat, Kathy! My DD and her friend are tossing around ideas all the time. Right now they're leaning toward Creepy-But-Cute. How that works, I dunno, but I'm "old"! I told them that Creepy was OK. Gruesome is not allowed. Fortunately I don't have to worry about immodesty. Neither one of them wants to show more than they ought. Yours Truly isn't even going to *try* to coordinate with the girls! Keep us posted on the Great Costume Debate! it'll be fun to see what they finally come up with.
This is the first time we've vacationed at WDW with anyone else. Usually it's DH :badpc:, DD :bounce: and myself, The Planner And Knower Of All Things Disney <snerk!> :wizard:. This time it will be the three of us plus Grandma :cutie:, Grandpa :surfweb:, Kassy (DD's friend) :jumping3: and Susan who is Kassy's mom as well as my friend :joker:. We're one person short of a Grand Gathering. Hmmm. Why does that sound so much like One Brick Shy of a Full Load? :dance3: Cuz we probably are, that's why! Let's just say that the mix of personalities will be interresting!
In any case I can hardly wait and I'm guessin' you can't either! Thanks for sharing your Adventures with us!

You know, if it's a question of the extra $$$, here's how I look at it....
;) Fuzzy Disney Math Alert!! ;)
You can purchase the ticket and get into the MK as early as 4pm, even though the "official" start of the party is 7pm. The party goes until midnight, so that's eight hours of MK party time!
I'm not even going to buy park tickets for that day, just sleep a little later, swim and do resort-stuff, then we'll head over to the party at four.
The party ticket cost then acts as a "substitute" for your park ticket cost...
Makes perfectly good sense, right???

Animal Kingdom Villas ~ Kidani Village!!!
:simba: :mickeyjum :simba: :mickeyjum :simba: :mickeyjum :simba: :mickeyjum :simba: :mickeyjum :simba: :mickeyjum :simba: :mickeyjum :simba: :mickeyjum
Here's what happened...
You may recall that today, Monday, 3/30 was to be my original date to make our ressie... back before I knew there was a MNSSHP scheduled for Sunday, 11/1. I decided then to switch our vacation from Fri-Fri to Sat-Sat (for ease of transportation.)
We still plan to vacation 10/31-11/7... However...
Over the weekend I was reading a lot about the difficulty DVC members have been experiencing getting ressies at the 7 month window for non-home resorts that are HOT because they are so new:
Bay Lake Towers and Animal Kingdom Villas!
As fate would have it, these were my Top Two of Desired Resorts, mostly because of the second bathroom in the one-bedroom vacation home. (Two 13-yr old girls, remember!) ;)
Anyway, I began to get nervous. :worried:
There are a lot of DVC owners from New Jersey and this is Jersey Week we're talking about! Not that I was afraid we wouldn't have a place to stay.... OKW and SSR were sure to have openings. But,
Been there, done that!!
And I wanted that 2nd bathroom!!
So, this morning I called precisely at 9am and made a ressie for Fri-Fri, thinking, "At least I'll get the bulk of my stay. Tomorrow I'll call back and switch to Sat-Sat." (Need that 7-month window before check-in.)
I asked for our first choice, Bay Lake Tower, standard view, and it was not available for all the dates. :sad1:
Oh well. I was not going to get into that whole day-by-day waitlist situation that caused me so much agita back in '07, so I went on to our next choice....
Animal Kingdom Villas (Kidani Village) ~ Savanna View
(Had to be Kidani Village, not Jambo House.... these are the villas with the second bathroom and that can sleep five!)
:woohoo: It was available!! :woohoo:
Needless to say, I scooped it up!
Tomorrow, I will call early and change from Fri-Fri to Sat-Sat; I shouldn't have too much difficulty.
I'm sorry we didn't get BLT... poor Ed has been wanting to stay at the Contemporary for years... but it's okay. I really didn't think we would get it on our first try since it just opened, will be insanely popular, and it is not our home resort.
:lovestruc Someday, Honey!! :lovestruc
(Ed told me he'd be happy with AKV, so I'm not even going to bother with wait-listing... I'll just try for it again next time.)
Whew! I feel so relieved to finally know where we will be staying.... and I'm absolutely psyched about AKV!! We've never stayed at AKL before, so this will be our very first experience at the resort!
I just love, trying new Disney resorts!!!
However, please send pixiedust: for my call to Member Services tomorrow... we aren't completely settled until I can get that Friday night stay!!!
Thanks!!
Kathy

:woohoo:On getting AKLV. I would love to stay there in the Kidani villas. they look amazing. I really wanted the person we rented points from to try and get us into that resort for May, but no luck with that. i also agree with your fuzzy Disney math. I did the same thing in October. That way we didn't have to get another days tickets and the kids could have a late character breakfast, swim and rest before the party. :lmao:At your big 80's hair picture. I used to love those guys when I was 13.
Woohoo! Enjoy the extra bathroom.

We stayed at Jambo House for our Oct trip, concierge no less. We didn't even book at 11mos, I was SHOCKED when they said it was available. We loved AKV and are looking forward to a few days in Kidani during our upcoming June trip. I know having that extra bathroom will be a Godsend. We're splitting betweek AKV and THV which we're also looking forward to because of the 3 bedrooms. All 3 kids will have their own bed so no griping about having to share especially DD12. Plus with the seclusion I won't have to worry about telling DS to turn down the volume, lol. ;)

A Few Butterflies...
Well its a little after eight... the kids are off to school and I'm just sitting here DIS-ing while waiting for DVC Member Services to open at nine. :hourglass
I was scheduled to work the entire day today, but last week I arranged to come in an hour later so that I could make our ressie call. Yesterday the doctor called and said the schedule was so light, I could just take the whole morning off because he only needs one nurse.
In a way, I'm glad! If I am able to make our ressie change without a problem, I will be super-high :hyper: and if I run into a problem, I will be crushed. :( Either way, it will be good to have the rest of the morning to "recover!"
So, yesterday I could hardly wait for Tricia to come home from school so I could tell her about us staying at Animal Kingdom Villas! What a disappointment! Other than being relieved that she and Catie would not have to share a bathroom with the rest of the family, she seemed very nonplussed about the whole thing.
"Aren't you excited?" I asked her. "Do you want to see some pictures of the resort?"
I thought that she would be amazed.
Who am I kidding? She's thirteen!!
"Mom, the only one who's excited this early is you," she said as she rummaged through the kitchen cabinets for a snack. "I'll get excited in September!" And with that, she went off to her room, rolling her eyes and snickering at her Disney-crazed mom.
Ah well. :confused3
I called my DSis (Catie's mom) and she was properly enthused, which smoothed my feathers a bit. She is trying to persuade DBIL to come down to WDW for the tail end of our vacation so they can at least do a long weekend.
I think Eileen is just dying to go to Disney again and I feel bad that we can't invite her for the week, too.
1) We don't have enough points for a larger vacation home, and
2) She and Ed get along like oil and water, so he would kill me!!
I really hope that they can swing it.... but DBIL wants to go to a work-related convention and expo in Vegas at around that same time, so they might not be able to do both. Sigh.
Oh well.
We laughed together about how the girls are so totally focused on their costumes and the MNSSHP and not necessarily the fact that they will be at WDW for an entire week! I suppose Tricia is right; they need more time for it to sink in.
She was psyched that we got the AKV... Catie has stayed at ASMu and CBR on their past two family trips, so she will be jumping right over the Deluxe category to a Home-Away-From-Home Resort. I hope I won't be spoiling her!
Uggh. Come on, clock, don't move so slowly!! I want to get this ressie all squared away so I can relax. I will not feel completely comfortable until I get this done!!
If you happen to be reading in the next half-hour.....send pixiedust, please!!

Back when DVC first announced AKV to members, they sent out this gorgeous folder with all the resort info, artist's renderings of the pool, the savanna, the vacation homes, etc....and I mean this thing was beautiful! It was made of speckled and textured recycled paper and accented with jute... it was like a mini-scrapbook!
It also came with an introductory DVD!
So, do you think I can find this now so I can drool over it?? Of course not!! :headache:

Ip-Dip is a word that an old-time DIS-er named Buzz, (MontanaDisneyFan), once coined to describe "someone who does something stupid or annoying at WDW."

I'm Giving My Regards to Broadway... Disney on Broadway!!
I've been thinking about how to break the news gently to Aunt Rae that we are not going to be inviting her to go with us to WDW this year. I am not looking forward to it! :sad2:
I've also been wanting to see one of the Disney on Broadway shows for the longest time, but its always been somewhat cost-prohibitive. But, now that they are having their 15 Year Anniversary Special, I finally decided to do it!!
(Buy one full-price ticket, get a second for $15!!)
So, for my own Mother's Day present, I got us tickets to see The Little Mermaid!!
It will be Ed, Tricia, Billy, me..... and Aunt Rae. I know she will absolutely love it. I guess I'm trying to "soften the blow" a bit.... and I hope it works!
Regardless, I'm super-excited about seeing the show! :dance3:
And, as an added bonus, now Ed doesn't have to think up of a good Mother's Day present for me!!!! :rotfl: I've done my own shopping!!

Good gravy am I jealous. I've been dying to see TLM on Broadway ever since it first started, and will hopefully be going in May before the actress playing Ariel leaves. My boyfriend and I have a deal: if I get straight A's this semester, he will go without complaining (he's a Disney cynic, and not much of a musicals buff either).
However, seeing that 15th anniversery deal, I might just have to buy those tickets now, even though I won't know my grades for about a month. I'll just take my mom instead if I get a B :thumbsup2

so cool that you will be there for the halloween party. we havent gone that time of year yet. In 2007 we went for jersey week but we didnt know it was jersey week til we got there and tried to figure out where the big crowds came from since disney was calling it wonderful weeks of disney with low crowds. haha. some woman heard me talking when i asked about it and she said. you know it is our week (aka people from nj ) as if nobody else should be there and how special it is because more people travel from jersey to disney than any other state. she was too funny. i'm from staten island but i do a lot of shopping in jersey ( i am hard pressed to find a jersey mall i have not visited) does that count?
anyways i am so glad i do not have to be the one to tell aunt rae she is so cute but she might just be relieved (at least she wont have to worry about watching the kids and going to the kids club)lol

Kathy- do you think AR expects to invited to your WDW vacations? I can't imagine that her health (mental and physical) has greatly improved in the year and a half since that trip. I just hate to think that you feel guilty for not inviting her. I think you should just let the subject of your next family vacation come up naturally....even if one of the kids brings it up. I don't know if this story is relatable but when I was a jr or senior in college my parents went to WDW....they waited until 2 weeks before their trip to tell me....I guess they were worried I might try to go with them (no thanks!) but I was really miffed that they thought I would expect an invite to go with them and that was obvious with how late they told me about their trip. I don't know what my point is other then I don't what you to feel guilty about not wanting to invite her and even if she does, AR shouldn't expect to be invited.

I don't know what my point is other then I don't what you to feel guilty about not wanting to invite her and even if she does, AR shouldn't expect to be invited.
I see your point, Heidi. Part of the problem is that she is rather "clingy" to us...she does not like most of the residents in her senior building and is rather lonely, I gather. Last week she called me and asked if she could "have a Playdate" (her words!) with the kids and invited them over to watch videos with her.
We have automatically begun to include her in most of our family outings because she really, REALLY, enjoys being with the kids and, well, we feel kind of sorry for her.
You are right, however. It would be different if she lived with us, or something like that. Then she might have the expectation of vacationing with us as well. It's difficult to avoid hurting her feelings, however, she is very sensitive.
And I'm just a big old marshmallow when it comes to not wanting to hurt people's feelings... so I know that most of my guilt is probably self-imposed.
Oh well, when the moment seems right, I (ahem, we) will have to tell her. I will definitely take your advice and not wait too much longer.
Thanks for listening!

I can understand you wanting to bring it up with her before one of the kids just blurts out that you are doing to Disney without her. I am a marshmellow too. I think it will be better if Ed is with you when you tell her, then you won't feel as guilty and maybe she won't take it as hard :confused3? I can't wait to see your pictures from Kidani!

Hey Kathy,
It's so good to be back "home"! Two weeks away from DIS-friends is way too long!
Anyway, congrats on your getting Kindani! What a dream... I know you are going to have such a blast.
I had to laugh out loud at all the 80's jokes! We were pretty funny weren't we? Big hair, Kotter, oh Gosh, what memories! I still say we had the BEST music.
Hoping for the best in the AR saga. I really wouldn't want to be in your shoes, but I agree with Heidi, don't put it off- she'll know you've avoided telling her, and that'll make it even more awkward.

 Perhaps if you explained to AR that you've been promising Tricia for some time now that she could invite Caitie on a WDW trip and that you need to do it before they hit the fast approaching "I'm too old/cool for it" stage she wouldn't mind so much. You never know. After the last trip, she may be relieved. She had her own not-so-much-fun moments too but doesn't want to say anything for fear of hurting your feelings.
In any case, I'm sure you'll handle it well and kindly. I sure hope it goes alright.

I wonder if it would soften the blow to ask for her advice...
Something along these lines...Tell her that you really want to do something special for Tricia and that you have this idea to invite Caity to Disney to go with her and what does she think about doing that? Is it a good idea?
Of course, this could backfire if she said it was a horrible idea and you should take her instead! :rotfl2:
You could just sorta make it her idea. :confused3
It is a hard situation, that is for sure! :) But if you can somehow make her feel a part of the decision-making, that might help. :confused3

Hello, All!
Tricia and I are home from our Girl Scout Weekend and, of course, once we got settled in, had a bite to eat, and got the laundry started, I could hardly wait to get back to my computer to check out what's been happening on the DIS and Enchanted!
Billy kept coming over to me, giving me hugs and pointing to the screen, saying, "We're staying at Walt Disney World!" over and over. Naturally, I responded with, "Yes, we're going for Halloween," and "Yes, we're staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge so we can see all the animals!" (And other comments like that.)
After a bit, I got up to make myself a cup of tea and I passed him in the ajoining living room. (In our new set-up, the office is right off the living room with a French door in between, so I can keep an eye on him while he's watching the TV. Billy's jumping up and down, and repeating, "We're staying at Walt Disney World!" (Which, of course, I thought was very cute.) I thought he was watching the new planning DVD, but then I stopped and looked closer.
It was not the DVD!
Somehow, he had pulled up the "On Demand" directory, found "Travel & Liesure", chose "Disney Travel" and from there he chose "DVC" and then "A New Village", which was an 11 minute piece on the new villas at AKL, Kidani Village!!
I am not kidding you.... my mouth was like this:
How did he do that?? He amazes me every day!
Anyway, I am still feeling high after making our resort reservation. For those who are interested in this kind of thing, I'm posting a link to the floor plan of the one-bedroom villa that we will be in. (It's a small picture, but you can get the general idea!)

I've already sung the praises of the 2nd bathroom, but I just noticed that, unlike the other one bedroom villas, the balconies at VAKL are ajoining, meaning, one long balcony instead of two little ones! I really like that!

The floor plan looks lovely! The layout is really nice and that bathroom off the bedroom looks heavenly! So is that a king size bed?? My dream WDW vacation includes a lovely King size bed and a separate room for the kids.

Kathy:  This is me green with envy that you get to stay in such a magical-looking place! I remember visiting Disney back in 1990, and thinking that old Key West looked like such a cool place to stay...wish my father had bought into DVC back then! I really love the layout of the room; the adults get their own space, and the kids get theirs, but it's all open and easy to move around the whole room. I can't wait to hear all about your adventure! :cool1:
What a smart little guy (or young man, I should say!) that you have there. It's funny how kids absorb the smallest things, and how they remember the smallest details from events that happened days, weeks or even months ago. Billy's a great :happytv: watcher; you should let him pick all the family programming! Seems like he had great taste! :dance3:

Well, the funny thing is... he really would love to control the TV in our house!! He has learned, however, that if he doesn't like what someone else is watching in the living room, he'll just into the kitchen and turn on "his" program!
Multiple TVs prevent an awful lot of squabbles in our family! ;)
I hope that you are able to stay at one of the DVC resorts someday. We really are fortunate to have invested in DVC when we did... I don't think we could do it now. Still, if I had my wish, I would add on more points so we could "afford" larger accommodations and be able to invite more family.
You see! The only problem with the DVC resorts is that they spoil you terribly!
 I understand that there are a lot of DVC folks who are deferring their Disney vacations this year and renting their points (for cheap!) If you are interested in trying out a DVC resort, especially OKW...it requires the fewest points...you may want to look into renting the points and save a bunch on "rack rate." (Check out the rent/trade board.) You may be surprised!

Yes, it is a king-size bed in the master bedroom, plus a queen-size pull-out sofa and a twin pull-out chair in the living room! :thumbsup2 Oh.... and did I mention the two bathrooms?! :rolleyes1 :lmao:
It is very nice to have your own separate bedroom... you can turn out the lights and let the kids go to sleep, then stay up a little later in the next room. (Well, if you can manage to keep your eyes open, anyway!)

DH doesn't know it yet, but I'm very interested in renting DVC points. I've got to sell him on staying on-site first. I'm hoping once we do it, he won't want to go back. DVC could solve our "space" problem. :goodvibes
I've gotta check out those On Demand programs - I didn't know they existed until a week or two ago - DH actually discovered them. ;)

This was a free program...it had to be...Billy has racked up a pretty penny in the past ordering from On Demand!! :lmao: We had to put a child lock on it, otherwise we wouldn't have money left to take a vacation!!

It's on Comcast cable - on demand - all free.
They are little snippits, not actual shows (like on Travel Channel.) Some stuff is lifted right off of the planning DVD, but other stuff is unique. They change things all the time.
Last year I recall a "behind the scenes" series about the Pirate & Princess Party that was really cool. They followed a young CM as he learned the dance routines and prepared to perform in the parade... really neat! Also saw an excellent "the making of" bit about Expedition Everest before it opened.
I never would have thought to click on the "DVC" section like Billy did... I figured it would just be an advertisement!
Right now, they're showing sneek peeks (4min long) of the American Idol and Toy Story Mania attractions. :thumbsup2

It was a very tough choice.... I really want to see Lion King, but thought Little Mermaid would be amazing, too!! I finally went with LM because I thought, oh, I don't know, I guess in the end it really was just, "Eenie, meanie, miney, mo!!"
I am so thrilled, really, and not trying to make anyone jealous!! Just sharing my excitement! When my kids were your age, we never went anywhere like this. Now that they are 11 and 13, I think they are able to actually appreciate the show.
(Plus, I never would have purchased the tickets had it not been for that Buy One/Get One for $15 deal. It's still a big splurge, but the offer was too good to pass up.)
I'm trying to recall the last time I went to a Broadway show.... its been a looong, looong time! (The Wiz, perhaps? Beatlemania??) It's really a shame since we don't live that far from New York City.
I've seen Sesame Street Live at the theater at Madison Square Garden a few times.... but I guess that doesn't really count!! :rotfl:

I love you method of choosing!!! That is too funny!! I had no choice when we went the only one showing was The Lion King. I've heard that the Little Mermaid is also amazing. Now I just have to figure out a way to get my DH to agree to a trip to NY. A Question of Independence...
We'll be spending time with family this weekend and, naturally, Tricia is anxious to talk Disney with her cousin. :hyper2:
She pooh-poohs me when I want to talk about the trip, but that's just her being a teenager. Wow... a teenager!!
I laugh a lot about her recent attitudes and how they reflect her growing up, but the fact remains that she is thirteen now and is slowly being given more freedoms and responsibilities as Ed and I see fit.
Charleston Princess brought it up the other day and it got me thinking...
I know that this subject will come up eventually in our family conversations...perhaps it may even come up this weekend...and I want to be prepared. I just know that at some point, the two thirteen-year-olds are going to want to go off on their own to do a certain ride or shop or whatever while we're at WDW and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
Yes, they will both have their cell phones. Yes, I can trust that they will honor the buddy system and stick together. But I just don't know.....
Somehow I just don't feel comfortable letting the two of them go off together in the parks. :worried: I know that WDW is relatively safe, but I cannot help but worry. I know Ed feels the same way, but I'm worried that my DSis (Catie's mom) feels more comfortable with letting them go and it may cause a bit of a conflict when we're there. Catie is an only child and used to a lot of independence.
Now, I'm perfectly fine if, say, the girls don't want to see Playhouse Disney and Ed takes them to the Magic of Disney Animation while I stay with Billy. I just don't think I can let them go off without an adult just yet.
What do you think? Am I being over-protective?? :confused3

Thanks - I love my links too! :goodvibes
I struggle with the whole independence thing too. My oldest is about to turn 9 so it is beginning to come up here and there. I remember the first time I let him play outside alone in our neighborhood (we live on a military base - we live in a "court" - there's a huge field behind our house - and there are always parents around keeping an eye on the kids). It was such a hard decision at the time!
If you don't feel comfortable with it then I think you should go with your instincts. Moms' "gut feelings" are pretty good. :thumbsup2 I can't really say what I would do because I haven't been in that situation. Maybe you could find ways to compromise? Give them a little space without letting them completely go off on their own. Don't ask me how I suggest you do that - just thinking out loud.

oh it is so hard, my ds will be 6 next month and he has convinced me thats since he uses the boys room at school that he needs to use the mens room in the mall. uggh. i cant even imagine how hard it will be when he really wants some independence. i was just reading on a thread last night how you can go to disney alone at 7. i cant imagine. but my friend allowed her 14 year old to go to 2 or 3 rides alone with his brother who is 11. they both had cells and she is generally over protective. but she felt it worked out well. they would meeet up after 1 ride the first time, then 2 rides and eventually 3, but she said that was her limit. i think it depends on what they are doing , i would probably be comfortable with them seeing a show alone and meeting them at the exit and then if that works maybe you would be comfortable with a little more. from reading your last tr i think your daughter sounds mature , but the bottom line is you have to be comfortable or you wont enjoy yourself.

I agree that Tricia seems very mature for her age. If I were you I would talk privately with your Dsis about the situation. All of you need to be on the same page. She might feel it is ok to give Catie more independence but you are the one taking her to WDW and are responsible for her while she is there. You have to do what you are comfortable with. Ed is a cop and if he doesn't feel comfortable with it, then neither would I.
1. Happy belated birthday, Tricia.
2. I'm of two minds on the independence thing (and please, take my youth as a massive grain of salt). On one hand, I was able to go "on my own" while my parents went on rides on the trip when I was 12, no cell phone, by myself at both WDW and Universal (of course, I was also the 7th child). I might consider doing a soft test (sending them to get coffee at Mara in the morning or something?) But if you're not comfortable with it, you and Ed are the boss.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 On the other hand, I was going crazy when Mordie (then 12) rode Mission: Space by himself last year

Carrisa answered it....yes when we saw it it was still in the test phrase...but I would ride it, just have to find a partner. Aldine has ridden the HUGE ferris wheel at Navy Pier in Chicago and that is pretty high up there.
A Question of Independence...
I just knew this was what you'd be talking about...
I just know that at some point, the two thirteen-year-olds are going to want to go off on their own to do a certain ride or shop or whatever while we're at WDW and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
Now, I'm perfectly fine if, say, the girls don't want to see Playhouse Disney and Ed takes them to the Magic of Disney Animation while I stay with Billy. I just don't think I can let them go off without an adult just yet.
What do you think? Am I being over-protective?? :confused3
I'm getting close to this and have had some of it...the twins will be 10 in just a few weeks and Aldine is pretty mature and responsible for herself w/ and autistic brother and 2 younger sisters. Letting them leave the resturant and use the restroom was fine and hanging in the pool w/ us around but maybe not exactly w/ them was good too.
I figure around that age 13 we may give some independence to the twins at Disney, especially w/ them being there so many times...if they don't need a map to find their way around MK or Epcot..know the rules, have cell phone...we may give it a go. now i may change my mind when I'm actually in this moment. and I'm not talking going off for hours but a few rides. we'll see good luck w/ this one Kathy...I'll be waiting to see what you & Ed and your Dsis decide and how it goes.
Maybe you could find ways to compromise? Give them a little space without letting them completely go off on their own. Don't ask me how I suggest you do that - just thinking out loud.
sounds like something worth pondering here...

Well, judging from the advice so far, I suppose I'm not being all that over-protective.... I just don't want to get into the position of allowing the girls too much freedom and then having to pull them back into the idea of "family vacation."
Ed's already worried that the girls will want to spend all their time together and wind up neglecting Billy. I realize that they will want to spend some time alone... after all, that's why we're inviting Catie in the first place... to be another companion for Tricia. I'm thinking that they will take turns sitting him on some rides and on others they will want to sit together... and that's okay.
carissanboys and Hedy: you both suggested some sort of compromise or soft test... I guess I don't mind if they go off on one ride together and then do some stuff with the rest of us. I just don't want them thinking they can branch off from the rest of the family for big chunks of time.
I could probably let them go off together when we go to the pool... Billy doesn't really like the deep end, anyway! And the lifeguards give some presence of adult supervision without them having to be "with" me and Ed.
mrsksomeday and kimmylaj: Yes, Tricia can be mature at times (as can her cousin), but you know how this age is... they have one foot in childhood and one foot in teenhood... and they keep lifting up one foot or the other throughout the day!! And, I'm not so worried about them as I am about all the crazies out there. Not to mention all the teenaged boys....:rolleyes1 I may just have to use baby steps...
mousescrapper and mrsksomeday: Yes, I'm hoping we can get everyone (adults) on the same page. Right now, we'll just be talking about things casually, but when we get closer to the trip I'd like to have a "meeting" with all involved parties to set down the rules.
I must admit, it'll be easier to do this with family than with a friend of Tricia's and her parents.
I'm also still keeping my fingers crossed that DSis and DBIL will be able to come for part of the week! :thumbsup2
maroo: :lmao: If only Aimee :dog: could go with the two of them, I would feel so much safer!!

What about giving them an hour or 2 per day to do things by themselves. Give them a cell phone in case of emergency and a specific place and time to meet you? But also let them know the rules....specifically if they aren't back in time or don't check in when they are supposed to they won't be permitted to go off on their own anymore.
Just an idea thrown out there for you.:goodvibes

I think the most important thing is to have talked about it WITH the girls and all be in understanding of the what guidelines they will have to follow- whatever it ends up being, (no time alone, a little time alone, or time enough for several rides alone) - are, so that everyone's on the same page. It's the same as everyone knowing in advance how much you will allow to be spent on snacks or souvies.
If they can responsibly navigate the park (I would never allow them to actually leave the park, or maybe even the 'land') without help, I would certainly allow two 13 year olds to go on rides by themselves. I would set up a meeting time and place, and as they build trust by making those deadlines, you can give more until you've reached your agreed upon hardstop.
Just my 2 cents.
Like someone said before, trust your mother's intuition. It's worth its weight in gold!

Kathy,
I agree with her advice 100%. Listen to your mommy instincts. I think a ride or two will be great though. Definitely not leave the park without the rest of the family :scared:. I used to go with my BF to Great Adventure when we were 14, we got dropped off by one of our parents. Mind you we found mischief to get into :rolleyes1but things were different 20 years ago.

He (naturally) associates the word "vacation" with WDW, so he thought we were on our way!!

Its been exactly one year since our last WDW trip, and I'm experiencing those well-known withdrawal symptoms! The April '08 trip report will commence shortly... I'm still hoping against hope that I can find my notes!!
I pulled apart two more boxes today, and I still can't find them! :headache:
Funny thing is, I seem to have clearer memories of the trip in November '07!! I'm looking through all the April pictures and my memory is just coming up with lots of blanks... perhaps because I made a concerted effort not to over-plan that trip. We took a lot more time "to smell the roses" (I'm speaking literally.. it was Epcot F&GF time) so I didn't even take as many pix. :confused3
I really need to do a super-duper Spring Cleaning... then perhaps they will turn up. Yeah, that's the ticket.... I'm just trying to motivate myself with whatever I can!
The doctor I work for is on vacation this week... herego, I am on (unpaid) vacation for the week... which is good in a way because I don't have to worry about childcare for Billy. Ed and I took him (and Aimee) for a really long walk earlier. It's sunny today, but still cool enough for sweatshirts and gloves... I'm determined to get back into shape, not only to help shed some winter pounds, but to build up walking endurance for WDW. You can't just go from being a couch potato to walking around the parks all day for an entire week!! :rolleyes1
Anyway, I think that if I can find those notes and get started on that report, it would help pass the time. There's really not much to do planning-wise for our Halloween trip at this point (except to dream about it!)

This is probably going to surprise you, but I'm rather relieved that they changed the ADR window to 90 days... 180 days was just too far out, IMHO. Plus, I'm hoping that if we have to wait until then to do the bulk of our planning, it will make those last three months fly by just a bit faster!! ;)

I have that brochure!!! Our DVC guide sent it to us -- ours is about worn out too -- there might even be drool marks on it from me. :rotfl: One of these days I will just buy DVC and be happy forevermore. One day...:lovestruc
Well, now, the DVC Resorts are beautiful... but the DVC program does have its pros and cons. If you are seriously interested, I suggest spending a little time on the DVC boards... you can get the true picture of the good, the bad, and the ugly over there!
(But, its mostly good.) :goodvibes

I LOVE the brochure & video!! I toyed around with the idea of staying at the AKL but decided to stick with what we have so I wouldn't ruin it for future visits... I'm afraid to stay somewhere as nice as that and then "have to" stay at a Value Resort... it might be a let down. The resort is beautiful!!
I love all the resorts that we have experienced: Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans French Quarter, Saratoga Springs, Old Key West, and the Wilderness Lodge!! They all have their own charms.
I admit that we never stayed at any of the Value Resorts... but that was only because Ed and I could never share a double bed... we need at least a Queen. (He claims that I am a bed hog, but its only because he steals all the covers and I'm simply trying to stay warm!!) :rotfl:
But, yes, the DVC accommodations really do spoil you.
Ed thinks its the King bed, but I know that its the really the Laundry Room that gets you hooked! ;)

Well folks, its close to midnight and I'm almost ready for sleepy-time.
Almost.
After a full day with Billy (who, incidentally, began showing symptoms of a cold toward the afternoon and was asking to go to the doctor by three o'clock), I fufilled my promise and took Tricia clothes shopping when she returned home from school.
I left a sniffling Billy with Ed and drove 45 minutes, in the rain mind you, to Jersey Shore Premium Outlets so Tricia could spend a little of her birthday loot.
"Why am I doing this?" I asked, as we sat in rush-hour traffic on the Parkway.
"Because you love me!" was the response.
We got down there fairly late, but Tricia was in heaven shopping at her new favorite store, Rue 21. If the girls do decide on Eighties Girls for their MNSSHP costumes, they will be able to assemble their outfits here... all the eighties stuff is back!
Jelly bracelets, fluorescent colors, even checkered sneakers and leg warmers!!
(Although now I'm told they are thinking of joining the Pirate crew with Ed, Billy, and me.)
I think we did all right. Tricia did a lot of trying-on, but in the end we came away with:
Rue 21: Tricia: 3 shirts and a bracelet. Billy: 2 t-shirts. Me: Black lace fingerless gloves for my Pirate Queen costume.
Charlotte Russe: Tricia: 1 dress and more bracelets.
Crocs Outlet: Billy: 1 Jibbitz (LGM from Toy Story) Me: 1 Jibbitz (A replacement Goofy... mine lost an ear somehow.)
And, may I have a drumroll, please! Ed: 1 pair of black Cayman Crocs!!! :rotfl2: (He swears he will only wear them around the house!!) He specifically told me not to get him Jibbitz, but I got him a skull 'n crossbones for fun! I also purchased some Crocs butter... my Lime Greenies are looking a bit worse for wear!
Tricia absolutely refused to get a pair of Crocs... so now she is my only holdout!
On the way home, I stopped for tissues and cold medicine for my poor Billy... I'm glad that I'm home with him this week already. At least he won't have to miss any school.
Oh Goody! It's past Midnight!
:woohoo: Now, I can officially say that we are under 200 Days!! :woohoo:

What a score at the outlets! Good for you guys- all of you! What drama with the costume choosing. I remember being like that when I was in school too. Just so many fun choices, and to only get to choose ONE! I know whatever they choose, it will look great- hey, who couldn't go wrong with leg warmers and Vans or a turned up collar on a Polo shirt??

Hedy and All7ofUs: Thanks! I was really just blah-blah-ing about the loot so I could post after Midnight about finally reaching the 199 day mark!! ;)
We had fun... too bad we ran out of time... Tricia still had a full head of steam at 8:30!

That sounds like such a fun shopping trip, even in the rain! She will be a styling girl, for sure!
And ED... in Crocs!! I never thought I'd read of the day! My hubby was the same way, down to the never wearing them in public. Yeah, they came to Disney last summer. ;)
And :cool1: for 199!! Getting closer!!

It all started a couple of weeks ago when he had to run out onto the deck and he grabbed Billy's pair. Even though they were too small, he must've thought they were comfortable.
"Maybe you could get me one pair and I'll just wear them around the house."
Mmm-hmm.
"Just plain black."
Mmm-hmm.
"And no Jibbitz."
Mmm-hmm.
You'd have thought he was consenting to wear a Man-skirt or something!
I pointed out that yes, they do make Crocs for MEN; lots of men wear them. Case in point: my DBIL wears Crocs all the time...in fact, he wears nothing else because of his back problems. Ed feels that they are acceptable as "slippers" but insists he will never wear them out. He thinks DBIL is an exception to the "Men-in-Crocs" rule because he is European (born in Germany!!) :confused3 :rotfl2:

Woo Hoo! Congratulations on 199 days!
It's me, The Co-Knower and Planner of All Things Disney :wizard:, BTW. I finally got sick of my boring old lorispeck user name and re-joined with GlassSlippers. I could not for the life of me figure out how to change just the user name!
Good for Tricia and her costuming decision. It sounds pretty cute! My DD has chosen her MNSSHP costume too. She wants to be the littlest Fantasia mushroom! Anyone have any suggestions for the big red mushroom cap? Her friend wants to be a non-Disney (gasp! choke! wheeze!) character called Lenore. I've never heard of her, but the girls assure me that she's cute in a slightly creepy sort of way. I'm taking their word for it.
Hope Billy feels better soon!

Well, AllEars posted the new menus for Sanaa, the restaurant that will be opening in May at Kidani Village.
Meh. "African cooking with Indian flavors." We probably won't be trying it.

I just don't think this is something my family (esp. the kids) would enjoy. We may just stick with the buffet at Boma! :thumbsup2

African and Indian food don't sound that appetizing. I agree stick with Boma. I have never tried Jiko but my BF and her hubby love it.
