I"ve never eaten at the Lib., but the character interaction sounds and looks wonderful! You all look so happy and like you're having the time of your lives. Even Aunt Rae looks radiant. (no pun intended)

I was actually thinking about eating here, just to try it, but without the gang, I think I'll pass. And now that you say the food "isn't like home", well that seals the deal. I can make a turkey dinner anytime.

I do miss it! :sad1: We ate there with the characters twice and both times the interaction was awesome; I always thought it was the best character meal for fun and personal attention from "the gang."

The food is just okay, not bad, not fabulous. Turkey & trimmings but not like "home."

I would not want to eat there without the characters.

Kathy, this is EXACTLY how we feel. The interaction was wonderful at LTT, it was always so fun, I miss it so much. We wouldn't eat there without the characters. I really love your "pics of the day", they are all fantastic. I really love the one with Eddie and Ed, too cute!

We were so sad when the characters left Liberty Tree:sad2: It was one of Jimmy's favorites becasue he LOVES Chip and Dale. It was one of Jim's favorites becasue he could eat Thanksgiving dinner every day! It's not the same with out the gang though:sad1:

I had heard a rumor that the characters were coming back to LTT because of the public outcry, but then... nothing. :confused3

Thank you; we were having a great time!
This was the time that Goofy tried to "steal me away" from Ed... Ed showed him his badge and it was hysterical; Goofy put his hands up on the wall and made like Ed was going to pat him down and handcuff him! :rotfl:

I realize that Disney needs to cut back like the rest of corporate America but, come on! That was one of the best character meals on property! :sad2: I'm not even sure if I want to keep our dinner at CM's.

If the park hours are extended or they add a Spectro that night, I'm going to want to stay at the MK...

We too miss LTT. While it wasn't 5* food it was good but the character interaction was great. I can't imagine paying the same price without the characters. I too had heard the rumor that the characters were coming back but so far no such luck!

Hi Kathy :wave2:

sorry I haven't got a bit behind....:sad2:

back to your comment several pages ago about traveling w/ the kids and then eventually as Grandparents....Matt and I see that too in our future, and truly was one of the reasons why we bought into DVC...I certainly see trips w/ all 6 of us, and then maybe just a few of the kids and then alone and then come full circle like you said. We were explaining this concept to the kids the other night after dinner, how many trips we have in our furture...and they were mesmorized by it. Kinda hard for 2 10 yr olds and an almost 7 yr old to think that far ahead...:goodvibes

now back to your trip....

:yay: less than 30 days...how exciting!

still loving the flashback pictures and just loved all the ones from LTT w/ the characters how fun! I guess I may be one of the few Disers who actually enjoyed eating at LTT w/ no characters :confused3 maybe it's becuase we never ate there before? either way, we enjoyed it and would dine again.

Can't wait to hear the rest of the last minute spooky planning! Your trip being less than 1 month away means my trip is getting close to just 1 year away

PS will be sending you a personal update soon concerning Margaret :cutie:

In a way it's comforting to know that WDW will always be a part of our lives, isn't it? Honestly, I can't imagine using my points to travel anywhere else!

Hi Kathy!! :wave2:

I love all the old pictures you are posting! :thumbsup2 They are adorable. :goodvibes I can't believe how much bigger the kids are!

Sorry to hear the tooth has taken a "bite" out of your wallet! :lmao: And Billy's bus trouble... I'm glad to hear things improved - I hope that has continued. :)

I'm enjoying your blog but I can't bring myself to join Twitter. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the DIS and facebook. When I read that Tour Guide Mike was on Twitter I said something outloud like, "Oh now Mike is tweeting too - I don't want to tweet, how am I going to keep up with all of this??" and Zachary started cracking up telling me to tweet! (And he started tweeting like a bird!) :rotfl2:

I can't believe you are going this month!! Reading about your MNSSHP plans brings back a lot of memories for me of our October 2007 trip. :goodvibes

Hey Kathy,

BTW...not to hijack your thread but...since Julie sort of brought this up a couple of posts back...I just got a form to sign from the school nurse...double checking that David's only medical issue was Asperger's Disease...:rolleyes1...Eric had to talk me down for 10 minutes because my first impulse was to go off on the nurse (really because I was upset-how can I trust her to take care of him if he ever needs to go down there?...if she doesn't even know what the name is?)...

Just wanted to comment on this one...
Sorry you had to deal with that Patricia!! And coming from the school nurse... :sad2:

I've been surfing all over the web lately and picking up all sorts of info!

(Tricia says that "surfing the web is, like, so OUT, Mom!")

But, you all know what I mean!

So, you're trying to figure out how to get from here to there or from there to here on property using Disney transportation? The folks at Our Laughing Place have got a service called "Transportation Whiz" that can take the guessing out of your situation:

http://www.ourlaughingplace.com/asp/twiz.aspx

As the old saying goes, what will they think of next?

Figuring out how to get from one place to another is such a useful skill! Seriously, it can make a great day take a turn south pretty quickly if you are stranded somewhere without a clue-- ie. resort to resort, or resort to park after busses stop running, etc...

Love that bear!!

Warning: You are entering a whining zone!

Well, you already know that our trip budget took a hit because of my dentist bill. Now we've had another unexpected expense: Ed dropped his cell phone on a concrete floor and it was destroyed. He really needs one for work, so it was a necessary replacement. :sad2: There goes another couple of hundred dollars... even with a rebate.

I was already pushing it by planning a vacation this year, only one year after our total home reconstruction. Paying that big boy off has been a real strain on our monthly budget. Plus, we're just coming off back-to-school expenses and college tuition for Eddie.

I'm afraid we'll have to use a credit card for our dining plan... I really didn't want to do that... and Christmas is just around the corner. :worried:

I was getting so excited but now I'm feeling so guilty... and a bit sad. Ed says we'll probably have to skip 2010. :sad1:

Guess I'll just have to squish two years worth of magic out of this trip!

Kathy

I start panicking about money every year before our trips. That we should have saved it, spent it one something "more important", saved it for holiday expenses, etc, etc.

But you know what...once you forget there, you'll forget all about it and remember that the family time is far more important than a little extra money in the bank (IMO anyway)

eandesmom
10-06-2009, 01:23 PM
whining allowed.

Those are the kinds of unexpected expenses that make the best of us super cranky. Ok not so much BTS or college tuition...but dentist and cell phone.

I hate having to use credit for vacation either. Hopefully at least you can use a Disney visa for the dining plan, get some reward points and 6 months with no interest on it?

I hear you though, it's going to be a very slim Christmas around here.

Awww, Kathy, that's too bad. Sorry to hear you might not be going in 2010, but you know what? Sometimes fate has a way of delivering surprises to us; you are such a wonderful person, and I bet that something will happen to make your trip happen next year. I'm not sure what, but I have a good feeling! :wizard:

Please don't feel too sad about what's going on...it's called Life, and we just can't do anything about it. Heck, I haven't been able to make it back to WDW since 2005, and I'm suffering MAJOR withdrawl. I know I'll make it back someday, though...:cloud9:

Kathy

Hi Kathy!

Don't feel guilty..... I've been feeling more and more lately that it's the family time spent together or 'events' in life that are so much more important than the objects bought or 'things' in life.

Maybe Christmas will be scaled back to cope but you'll be together and will have the wonderful memories from this trip to last a lifetime!

Hi Kathy!! Sorry about those unexpected expenses that have popped up!! I always feel guilty about the money too... but our kids are only young once, right?? :confused3 And it's not like you can cancel your trip now...

I love that transportation tool - I used that one (or one that looked very similar) this year when we stayed at CBR - it was really helpful. I think mousescrapper or MRYPPNS told me about it.

I know all those Iphone WDW apps are crazy!

I never knew...

I don't knowing some stuff, but this takes planning to a whole new level. I guess it can be useful though.

Especially for first-timers!

Figuring out how to get from one place to another is such a useful skill! Seriously, it can make a great day take a turn south pretty quickly if you are stranded somewhere without a clue-- ie. resort to resort, or resort to park after busses stop running, etc...

Love that bear!!

I really wanted him, but I resisted! pooh:

I didn't know that "surfing the web" was no longer an "in" phrase -- what are we supposed to say instead?

Per Tricia you're supposed to say, "I'm online." If you say that you're "surfing" it pegs you as being old. :rolleyes2

So I said, "Whew, that's a relief, because I am old!"

Wow....cool link! I seriously need that because I am not good at Disney transportation. All these iphone apps really make me want one!

They are tempting...

I start panicking about money every year before our trips. That we should have saved it, spent it one something "more important", saved it for holiday expenses, etc, etc.

But you know what...once you forget there, you'll forget all about it and remember that the family time is far more important than a little extra money in the bank (IMO anyway)

I suppose its like Buyer's Remorse...

whining allowed.

:grouphug:

I shouldn't complain; there are lots of folks that are going to have a much slimmer Christmas than we will. It's guilt talking. So many people are struggling and here we are going off to Disney...

Thanks for the pixie-dusted good wishes! I'm sending some back to you! pixiedust:

I actually did think about how much $$ we would lose by cancelling (I would cancel if it was truly an emergency, which its not) and its not worth it, really.

Thanks for the arm around the shoulder!

:hug:Sorry you have been feeling nervous. I was feeling guilty too, after all we were just there in January.

But I have had a very stressful month, and now I feel as if a vacation is a much needed break from work, some really strange neighbors, and the chaos that the roads around here have become.

Family Time is really important. DH and I believe it is money well spent. A trip to Disney is always very good for helping our family spend some stress free time together without the stress of Daily Living. No work, no school, no distractions.

I washed my phone a couple years ago (in the washing machine). Rather than replace it I just used the phone I had previously. Do you have an older phone that he could use?

I know about unexpected expenses, but hey, like the others said, once you and your family are enjoying some good family fun together at the happiest place at earth it will all be worth it.

I'm so looking forward to our escape from reality next year, and some "real" family time together with no daily stresses of every day life.

So do you have any planning left to do? Or is everything pretty much done at this point?

What a bummer to hear about the phone- esp. just on the heels of that darned tooth! Things like that can certainly start to add up and become stressful, esp. if you're already stretching things!!

Whine away, Kathy! I can totally sympathize! Before we went on our trip this past weekend, I was so conflicted about it and thinking of all the things we could do with that money instead. Charles made sure we went ahead with the trip though, and I am so glad he did -- I think creating memories is one of the most important things. Just remember, the kids won't be young forever and these trips are great ways to spend time together as a family!

Bummer about the cell phone. My son dropped mine on the driveway in the dark and then stepped on it and broke it in half. I felt guilty about having to replace it so soon, but this stuff happens. (And I actually like the new one soooooo much more).

Anyway, I think everyone feels a little guilty about money right before they go away. It's normal (unless you're independantly wealthy). I agree with what CP said - making the memories is priceless.

For sure! I suppose I'm just feeling a bit guilty because I'm the one who always pushes for our vacations. But I'll always remember how my parents used to talk about taking us to WDW when we were younger but never could. I don't want the same thing to happen to my children.

Thanks, Brook! I'm also looking into picking up a few extra hours of work with another doctor. Working part-time is great because of more time at home, but of course it means less $$ in the paycheck. I really need a bit more than 2 days a week, which is pretty much what I'm working now.

You are going to be a full-time SAHM soon, so I know you're contemplating all these issues a lot lately. One of my sisters decided to quit her high-stress job last year to be a SAHM and she has loved it, despite the proverbial "tightening of the belt."

Well, Ed's little retro check notwithstanding, I've decided to take a look at our upcoming trip expenses and do a bit of trimming where posssible.

First: Transportation

We found after our very first trip to WDW in 2003 that the Mears shuttle was a bit of a stressor for Billy after a three hour plane ride. Since then, despite the institution of Disney's Magical Express, we've always spent a little extra on car service to and from MCO. I always thought of it as an investment... anything that would help Billy tolerate the hustle and bustle of travel was worth it IMO.

But, we started doing this when he was six; he's eleven now and better able to handle transitional situations despite the symptoms of his autism.

With this in mind, I called DVC Member Services this morning and made arrangements for ME. Fortunately they were able to accommodate us; I was worried that at three weeks out it would be too late to make the arrangements. And so, we will be using Disney's ME for the very first time.

Pro: Saves about $175 for round trip. (with tip)
Con: Earlier pick-up times... will probably lose an hour or two of park time on our last day.

I'm fairly confident after reading so many TRs that I know how it works, but if you have any special tips, I'd be happy to hear them! :thumbsup2

On the New Jersey end, car service to and from JFK airport (NYC) is more expensive. It's usually around $200 one way, plus tip. Ed is going to ask his brother to drive us to the airport on 10/30, so that will help. Due to his schedule, he won't be able to pick us up on 11/7, so we'll pay for transportation home.

Pro: Saves about $225.
Con: Having to ask a favor.

Total Transportation savings = $400

Second: Park Tickets

Typically we like to get Park Hoppers; its just nice to have the flexibility. I can save $56 per person by purchasing 7-Day non-park hoppers. I currently have two days on my itinerary scheduled for hopping... that can be always be tweeked.

Pro: Saves $225
Con: 1) Will have to do DHS all day on a Fantasmic Day, and 2) Will have to move one of my ADRs.

On the positive side, Disney has been adding more showings of Fantasmic throughout the month of October. If the trend continues through the first week of November, DHS should not be quite as crowded on Fantasmic days. ::yes::

So.... with a few cuts here and there, we will save a total of ~ $625!

The Baic Dining Plan will cost us $160 per day, or $1280. So, with the money I'll save I figure that covers almost half of our Dining Plan!

Gosh, it really stinks that we DVCers couldn't get in on Free Dining! :sad2:

That is significant savings on the transportation, definitely worth it!
I think you'll only lose about an hour on ME versus car....and as long as you don't have an early morning flight, it is well worth it.

Park hoppers...tougher call. I believe though, if you get there and find you really need to hop, they can change them and you just pay hopping for whatever days are left on your ticket.

YAY for paying for the DDP!

Sorry I've been MIA...I've been reading along, but not commenting much....my life is so crazy!!

I can't believe you are leaving in 3 weeks!! YAY!!!

I think we are all feeling the pinch financially lately. And if it's not one thing, it's another. Time spent with family is something you can't put a price on...try to relax and just enjoy! (and all the "trimming the fat" ideas look great!)

Love all the retro pics! We did LTT when they had characters as well..probably won't go back without them.

Kathy,

those are some great savings to be made...good for you :thumbsup2

Tips for DME:

1) FYI Michael has ridden the DME all 3 of his trips...and it has been just fine!

2) Prep Billy well so he understnads the change, show him a picture of the bus, maybe make up a quick social story/time line

* arrive at airport

* get off plane

* restroom break

* snack break?

* taking mini monorail to other side of airport

* checkin for bus

* wait on red carpet

* get on big fancy bus

* HOPE you have the one w/ the "movie"

you get the idea!

I'm sure he'll be fine! Michael loves the video and that keeps his atrention for pretty much the whole ride (it starts shortly into your travel) knowing how much Billy loves his videos..it should be good!

ME tip. Pack a complete change of clothes for everyone in their carry on. The 1st time we used it Jim's bag was picked by TSA for extra search and for some reason the tore the luggage tags off the suitcase. He did not get his suitcase until 4pm the next day!

Great savings!!

Park Tickets

Typically we like to get Park Hoppers; its just nice to have the flexibility. I can save $56 per person by purchasing 7-Day non-park hoppers. I currently have two days on my itinerary scheduled for hopping... that can be always be tweeked.

Pro: Saves $225
Con: 1) Will have to do DHS all day on a Fantasmic Day, and 2) Will have to move one of my ADRs.

Bill and I had the same park hopper talk last night. We decided no park hoppers, the con is the exact situation as yours :lmao:. Seriously, I am not trying to copy you, it is hilarious that we decided the same thing last night :rotfl:.

I am sorry that you have to tweak plans to cut costs but I am happy that you look like you've done a great job in doing so!

Does that make sense:confused3:rotfl:

As for ME - Gabriel never has a problem since they have a movie (Disney ad really) playing....It doesn't come on right away but it's not that bad of a wait. Is there a special snack/game you can slip him just in case there is a problem?

Gabriel was so sick of planes trains and automobiles on our first day because I planned too much. I should not have planned a dinner that evening at a Resort. That meant getting on a bus to a park then getting off/waiting and then getting on another bus and the same to get home. All that was after the trip to the park-n-go, the shuttle from the park-n-go, the plane ride, the MCO shuttle-rail thingys:goodvibes and the ME ride to Pop. Actually, I was pretty done with traveling that day.

I don't know what you have planned on your first day but you may want to make sure you don't make that mistake.:sad2:

Do you guys get the flu shots? I was just wondering since you are in nursing. We don't do the shots, but we don't the flu either. I do catch a mean head cold from time to time and this year two weeks before our trip I started taking vitamin c out the ying yang!!! I was sick our previous trip and I was not having it this time:goodvibes

It seems that in our hub bub of trying to live life and get ready for a trip - I forget to take care of myself (eating right/sleeping well).:confused3

Make sure you take care of yourself so you can have the very best trip! I am hearing so many people are sick right now.

Wow! I am so impressed with all the tweaking you have done! The most wonderful thing is that you haven't sacrificed anything big with any of it -- I have to say that we haven't park hopped the last few trips (even though I had added it to our tickets this past summer) and haven't missed it. It's actually very nice to be at just one park for an entire day (with an afternoon break thrown in).

Great trimming... you've tweeked some great savings there. I'll agree with the rest in terms of ME, that's actually one of the things we look forward to. It's a great ride and the movie is cute.

I'm not sure you can add the park hoppers just to any remaining days you have. It may have changed since then, but in 2006 for our first trip, on our last day we needed to park hop and the cost was the full $50 a ticket. We prefer spending the entire day at one park too.

As for showing Billy a picture of the ME bus, I don't know about that. I mean we have been on 3 types of busses used for ME. The regular one, a cruise ship bus, and a yellow Mears. Now that might be because we need a bus with a lift too.

Park hoppers... that's a tough one for us too. We've thought about trying it without but we have trouble staying focused on one thing too long & almost always hit two parks each day. (Plus, how could I explain to the kids, including my niece?)

You'll just have to channel all your planning energy into June. I'm sure you'll have an even better time knowing you used your money wisely! :thumbsup2

WOW woman, you did some great saving....I'm impressed. We took the magical express on our honeymoon and thought it was GREAT!!! though I've never done it with children and probably won't on this upcoming trip as we are planning to drive to Florida :scared1: 14 hours I believe for us, but will sleep over somewhere on the way, don't know if we are saving money, but DH is worried about the boys on the plane-bothering others. And we will like having our van with us if ever we need to drive somewhere.

I am slightly sad about missing the ME, cause Jack LOVES buses, I don't know why, but he squeals with delight whenever he sees one. Guess we'll just have to take buses from hotel to parks everyday.

I'd like to trim the fat on some of my planning, but it's our first trip... so don't see that happening

I love to see when money is saved for things you really could use for something else (ie. house remodelling).

Billy seems like he's been making some great strides in a lot of areas- I think he'll do fine. Having his iPod ready is a great idea!

We've never gone with PHs and have never missed them either! There's so much to see in every park! If you need change of scenery you can always take a short break at the resort or DTD? I'd say that's quite a chunk of change to save for sure!

We've never purchased hoppers-and probably won't. We have APs currently, but that is the only reason we can hop...and even then, we usually don't! It's nice that you can leave a park and then come back to the same one - so if it's nutty busy in the midst of the day at DHS, you can leave and zip around the nearby resorts, or go swim, etc. and come back. Hopefully it will work out great for you! And the savings overall is awesome!!! :thumbsup2

The only tip I can think of for ME is perhaps asking the CM to board as the last family on the bus if Billy gets antsy just sitting on the bus. We have had to wait over 20 minutes, just sitting there, until more people came and filled the bus up. Other times, we have gotten on, as one of the last families, and the bus pulled away within 5 minutes.

The video is great-starts very shortly into the ride and lasts the entire time.

We drove last year. I guess we saved money, but I didn't like "wasting" precious park time on the road! Of course, it was a plus having our own wheels.

When Billy was younger we always requested bulkhead seats so he couldn't kick anyone in front of him. That, plus having the portable DVD player with headphones really helped. :thumbsup2

Naturally, a few itinerary changes had to be made because we will no longer be doing any park-hopping. Let me tell you that the one thing I don't like about vacationing during the first week of the month is that I don't get park hours and entertainment schedules... neither the originals nor the updates... in a very timely manner. :headache:

If you've been watching, Disney has been playing it very close to the vest with these, releasing abbreviated hours 90 days in advance and then making the announcements regarding any changes at the very last minute.

Case in point: We weren't told about changes to the October schedule (expanded park hours, more Spectros, more Fantasmics) until Sept. 30!! We most likely will not hear about November changes until Oct. 31.

Well, that's fine and dandy for the folks travelling mid-month, but it's kind of a day late and a dollar short for those of us that will already be there on Oct. 30! :rolleyes2 Can't really go changing those ADRs at that late date, can we?

Oh well. (Sighs) I'm going to play it safe and keep things pretty much the way I had them... just changing out the park-hopping on Monday and Wednesday.

Here's the new itinerary, with changes noted in pink:

Friday, 10/30

Arrive MCO ~ 10:45pm, check into Kidani Village

Saturday, 10/31

Breakfast at Boma / Resort time, swimming, etc.

Your itinerary looks really, really fun .... I wish I was going with you. The tweaking out of the park hoppers looks like it will be a great decision.

Going back to the ME for a minute, and I'm sorry if you've already talked about this, but since you're arriving at MCO after 10pm ... factor in that you're collecting your own luggage at baggage claim and bringing it with you on the ME bus.

Oh, I'm so looking forward to your trip report! I hope Disney Time slows to a crawl for you when you are down there!

A few comments for you in RED

Yes, the "secret" is out regarding the party starting at four! I'm prepping the kids be stressing that we'll be doing rides early and party stuff late i.e. the second HalloWishes and the second Boo to You Parade.

If ride queues get scary, we can use Billy's GAC. I figure that most families with younger children won't be able to make it much past 10pm, so perhaps it will get a teeny bit less crowded after that? :confused3

As for the TSM Stampede(!), once again, I will be grateful for the use of the GAC... there is no way that I want to risk getting caught up in a frenzied crowd with Billy in tow! This is exactly the kind of situation for which the GAC is intended.

My plan is to head over to Sunset for R&RC/Tot first. :thumbsup2

::yes:: and anything else you think you would need for that first day!

Great point! I will be mailing our Halloween costumes to the resort ahead of time... they are just too bulky to cram into suitcases. The party is the next day, so that's another bit of safety net right there!

But then I just read....

(con't.)

Hmmm! So if we arrive at MCO late we take our luggage with us? I like that!
(But I'm still packing an overnight bag, just in case!)

Funny comment about "Disney Time"... time never seems to slow down at Disney, does it?!

Thanks!

Great job on the cost cutting measures. We haven't ever purchased Park Hopper tickets and we haven't ever missed having them either.

Good Idea to ship your costumes ahead of time to the resort. I am going to pack mine in a Sterilite container.

Your plans look great!

and OMG the food blog....it really would have been better if I didn't know about that. It is now bookmarked of course.

Arriving after 10pm you CAN use ME to delivery your bags but I wouldn't advise it as either they will come in the middle of the night while you are asleep or after you'd like them in the am. It's just as easy to take them with you, that's what we did. The nice thing is MCO is not crowded at that hour so it goes quite quickly, your longest wait will be for the bus to fill up before it will leave.

If you take them with you, you won't have to worry about when they will arrive in your room.

ME filling up is relative mind you, just based on other flights coming in.

[Second: Park Tickets

::yes::

Kathy,
We just got back from a week in Disney last weekend.....and this was the first year that we too did not go with Park Hoppers. And, honestly......it was no big deal AT ALL. We did two days each in MK and Epcot, and one day each at Studios and AK. Other than the fact that you will have to "tweak" the ADR situation, I think you will be fine without the hoppers.

There is going to be two HalloWishes on Halloween? When are they doing the 2nd one???? You'd be shocked how many families are still there late! Aisling was still WIDE awake at Midnight last year! She would have stayed all night if we had let her!!! Definitely plan to use the card.

You guys are going to have so much fun at MNSSHP. It was two years ago this weekend we were there. Columbus Day 2007. The party was so much fun. :cool1:

(I'll post a couple pictures from our MNSSHP for you later - I wasn't posting face pictures back then so I don't have any in photobucket right now...)

Congrats on trimming some expenses!

We've used ME without any problems. I too recommend you collecting your bags before checing in at ME, otherwise who knows how late you'd get your bags. :confused3

We dropped PH option a few trips ago, it is just too great an expense to justify. We actually have come to like touring that way, much easier if you've accumulated some fast passes during the morning.

Since you're already shipping a package down, have you given any thought to sending your liquids (toiletries) too and then flying with only carry on bags? That is what we've done the past two trips and it was GREAT not having to wait for bags after the flight.

Hi Kathy,

I didn't have time to go back and read everyone's responses, but I really feel like you just arent' going to miss those park hoppers, at all! Your schedule looks great, with a good balance of late nights and sleep in time. Good move to ship those costumes down ahead of you!
Looking good!

I feel you anxiety of park hours not coming out "in time". I hate that! It really seems unfair and a bad deal for those of us going earlier in the month. Boo!

Just noticed this little tidbit on MousePlanet:

…For some reason, we haven't yet listed the fact that Disney has extended the 10 percent discount for using the Disney Rewards Visa card into the theme parks. Traditionally, the discount has only been available at the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney. It's only available at Disney-owned and -operated locations for purchases of $50 pre-tax or more. It's not valid on many types of merchandise, including ticket media, gift certificates, video, DVD, cameras, and so forth.

Your best bet, if you're using your Disney Rewards Visa card is to ask ask if the discount is available.

I don't think I'll be making any huge purchases, but perhaps some of you can use this information! :thumbsup2

So.... with a few cuts here and there, we will save a total of ~ $625!

The Baic Dining Plan will cost us $160 per day, or $1280. So, with the money I'll save I figure that covers almost half of our Dining Plan!

Gosh, it really stinks that we DVCers couldn't get in on Free Dining! :sad2:

Kathy

Nice work Kathy! I love saving $. Before I had an AP there were several times where I omitted the park hopping. I think its useful when the crowds are high, but when the parks are a moderate level I do not think having a non-park hopping ticket has much impact on a trip. There are many times where I like to go back in the evening to "finish" the same park I started in.

I like your 2.0 itinerary. You are so close now.

I must comment, I had NO idea transportation costs to the airport would cost that much. Yikes! Thank goodness for getting a ride one way!

Unfortunately, that's what we get for living in the general vicinity of NYC!
It's a lot more to travel out to JFK airport than it would if we were using our usual Newark Airport; but we saved so much $$ on airfare!

Yes, the discount isn't being advertised... you do need to ask!

I always thought it was a bit wacky to make us go to WOD for the discount... there's a lot of impulse-buying that goes on in the parks!

Hi Kathy:

Thinking positive thoughts and saying prayers for your dad. What a bummer to need surgery again so close to his original bypass surgery? What valve is he having replaced? Are all his bypass grafts open? (I hope you don't mind so many questions, but I work in cardiac surgery)

The hardest part of the Redo surgery is opening the sternum again, unless he is having minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. Otherwise, his recuperation should be similar, as long as he doesn't have any new or significant health problems (lung disease, kidney disease).

I really hope everything goes really, really well.

Hi Mary Ellen!

He's having the aortic valve replaced and unfortunately it's the traditional surgery, not the minimally invasive procedure. But, his grafts are fine... a very slight leakage noted in the mitral valve but not enough to warrent any treatment right now.

He was born with a bicupsid aortic valve, so its not a surprise that its giving him some trouble now that he is in his 70s.

He is otherwise in good health, so I'm very hopeful that he will do well. The same surgeon who did his CBBG five years ago is performing the valve replacement and we love him... what a great doctor!

Thanks for your concern and I will definitely call on you for your expertise if needed!

So sorry to hear about your dad, Kathy...glad to know that everything went well. He'll be in my prayers for a quick recovery!

We could really use some prayers in our household, too...Saturday evening, Sarah (DD12 with HFA) fell and broke her wrist. She completely broke both bones where her arm and wrist are connected, and had to have surgery Sunday morning to reset her arm/wrist. She is now in a full arm cast for 3-4 weeks, and then a small cast for another 3-4 weeks. She probably won't be able to participate in dance (or other activities) for 6 months. Monday, I started having problems with chest congestion, and tested positive for H1N1, and now the rest of the family is sick, too. I'm feeling a lot better today than I have, but now I have to doctor the rest of the family back to health. Thanks!

Thanks!

Hello Friends!

Well, the latest on Dad is that he's off the ventilator and his vital signs are good... lots of morphine for pain, but he is drinking fluids and everything is stable, thank God! :worship:

In other news, I am a bit bummed not to have made it to Round 2 of the 2010 Disney Mom Panel. *Sigh* In a way, though, I'm thinking that it's a blessing in disguise. Writing The Book is going to take enough time away from my family; I think this was God's way of making sure I didn't put too much on my plate.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Many of you have stopped by my book blog... Amy, Carissa, Denise, Erin, Julia, Julie, Jordan, Kimmie, Kristine, Margaret, Maroo, Nancy, Sara, Stephanie, and of course, Tracy! Thanks so much for your support!

irish dancer, what is your real name, anyway?? Thanks to you too!

And if I left anyone out, please forgive me. :flower3:

If any of you have yet to read about my little project, please visit:

If you can, please click on as a follower... I really appreciate it because it helps me keep track of you all!

Trip-wise, everything is humming along. Jordan will be thrilled to know that I've started my travel-size shopping! And I'm stocked op on Zip-loc bags! All MNSSHP costume pieces have been accounted for and the bulkier items (like pirate hats) will be mailed to the resort ahead of us. I checked up on DNeice, Catie, while I was at her house Tues night and her costume is all set, too. She's very excited! :hyper: Tricia is also moving from the apathy of six months ago to pre-trip excitement!

I regret not having started on any social stories for Billy yet, I hope there will be time to do at least a few basic stories.

I'll probably put in my order for GardenGrocer.com this weekend.

Thanks again for all your prayers and positive thoughts for Dad!

your updated itinerary looks well too and it seems as many of the last minute details are coming along...

We managed DHS on a F! day, granted we had the rain that may have scared off some guests... I think w/ good planning you will have a good full day. (we used the GAC for TSM too) about an hour after the mad rush...

Keep you and your family in my prayers still too!

Well, its been a pretty rough weekend.

Dad had some post-op complications; the surgery disturbed the ability of his heart to pace itself and his heart has been beating either very slow or very fast, and very irregularly. He will be getting a pacemaker today and hopefully will be coming home Wednesday.

I've spent the past three days/nights at the hospital and I'm pretty beat. I'm hoping to slowly catch up with your reports, but I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your kind thoughts and prayers.

Can I just reassure you that this is not uncommon at all after heart surgery, particularly aortic valve surgery. Atrial fibrillation (fast, irregular heart beat) happens in 1/3 of all patients that have heart surgery. When your dad was started on amiodarone (or whatever other agent they may have used) his heart rate probably dropped. As a result - the pacemaker! Atrial fib is usually a temporary problem, but it has to be treated to maintain hemodynamic stability. Without the pacemaker it can not be adequately treated.

I hope all goes well with the pacemaker today. I have to be honest with you. I have noticed that heart surgery patients really hate getting pacemakers. I'm not sure why this is, because compared to the original surgery, the pacemaker is a relatively simple procedure. I guess people just don't like taking home a permanent device.

Hi Mary Ellen! Thanks for the reassurances.

My mom was completely wigged out by the thought of the pacemaker... not quite sure why; its really not such a big deal. I suppose it was just a "oh no, not another surgery" kind of thing. It took us the entire weekend to calm her down; she does not handle stress very well. I stayed with him during the overnights because if I didn't then she would, and that would have driven the staff (and my dad) completely crazy!

Its too bad that they can't put Xanax in a spray form; we could spritz it around patient rooms like Febreeze and then certain family members wouldn't freak out so much!

My dad is an electical engineer and the rationale for the pacemaker is very easy for him to understand; he's fine with it.

I will keep you updated...

Kathy -

I hear ya'. I see so many patients and family members "wig out" over this. Very, very common reaction! I bet your mom will be much calmer once he gets his pacemaker. Then things will settle down and be back on track!

(p.s. I know you know what atrial fibrillation, but I included the explanation for anyone else who may be following along)

It took me the better part of the morning, but I think I'm caught up on all my PTRs! I will take a break and then tackle the TRs this afternoon, once I've put in a few hours of cleaning up this house.

What a disaster! It's amazing how messy a house can get when mom's gone for a few days! I'm working for the next three days, so I've got to get it done today! So...

Kathy, I'm so sorry it's been such a rough weekend. We'll continue to keep you dad in our prayers. Hope the pacemaker takes care of everything!

Sarah is doing rather well. We've only had one major meltdown (at 2:30 am, of all times...DH took her for a ride in the car with classical music to calm her down). Got a good report at the orthopedist today and she is now able to participate some in dance class, with caution. Flu is winding down in our house...everyone started getting back into normal life again today. You're right, though, we moms do usually put ourselves last. On the worst day of my flu, I took my DD's to the dentist, went to K-Mart, Kroger, and the library before crashing at home :sad2: I guess we do what we need to so life will keep going. Think I can fit in your suitcase when you go to WDW? It'd be kind of nice to go back to our "happy place" and escape all this ;)

Please continue to keep us updated on your dad's conditions! Enjoy getting ready for your trip!

Hey everyone! Time for another Dad update....

He had a pacemaker put in yesterday, but spiked a temperature of 101 at midnight, so the surgeon wants him to have a few doses of IV antibiotics and a normal temp before he leaves. So far today he has had a normal temp, so hopefully he will come home tonight.

I'm glad because the longer you stay in a hospital, the greater chance you have of getting an infection. He's been up out of bed and even walking around in the hall.

If he is discharged tonight, I may take another trip down the shore to make sure everything is okay and to give my DSis a little break. She's been shuttling Mom back and forth and handling the phone calls, etc. She sounds pretty tired.

Thanks again, I'm sorry I haven't responded individually to everyone, but I've read all your posts and have been truly touched by your kindness and concern for my family.
