Post some of your favorite night shots here (I'm sure there's another thread similar to this, but I couldn't find it via searching or browsing the first few pages of this board).

I'll start:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3091/3255932092_e70b7d01d1_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/10245245@N07/3255932092/)
Clicking the picture takes you to its Flickr page, where you can access its EXIF data, access my other WDW shots, etc.

If at all possible, can everyone add their EXIF if you've got it handy? Night shots are something I have done very little of and I'm looking forward to seeing what some of the settings are I see in all of these fantastic shots. :thumbsup2

Smugmug strips my exif and I'm too lazy to look it up on my external HD, but for most of my night shots, I use similar settings:

ISO 100
F8
shutter of 20-30 seconds

handicap18
02-06-2009, 03:31 PM
Nikon D50, ISO 800, f/4.2, 1/1.3 seconds, 35mm:

Nikon D50, ISO 800, f3.5, 1/2 second, 18mm:

Nikon D50, ISO 400, f/11, 30 seconds, 31mm:

Nikon D50, ISO 800, f/10, 4 seconds, 34mm:

I don't know the reason I was using ISO 800 on some of those. Those with ISO 800 were my first trip to Disney with my dSLR. They still came out great, but at that point I still hadn't gotten all the setting stuff down yet (5 1/2 months after purchase).

I'm fairly new to this board, so I mean this as a serious inquiry and with no disrespect, but is this more a photography board or a Disney photography board? If the former, I totally agree that the brand distinction would be a good one. If the latter, I don't really see it as a meaningful distinction. I mean, if viewed for the "pretty shots," camera type is irrelevant, and if viewed to learn from EXIF data, the data is equally applicable regardless of brand (unless you want to split hairs on what camera has the best high ISO performance...and most of these shots are probably using a tripod, and at ISO 200, anyway, so that doesn't matter). Perhaps distinctions based on park (AK/MK/EPCOT/DHS) would make more sense?

I guess before we go any further, the question is: so what "type" of board is this?

Ha, ha. I posted a couple of Tink photos 3-4 years ago and it went about 10 pages on whether Tink was a man or woman. Honestly, I think it's just blur, her positioning, and all the junk she has to wear. During that discussion someone said she needs to be around 100 pounds or less to qualify. That would be a pretty small guy.

I don't want to speak for Jeff because I'm not pooooositive of this, however I don't believe he used a star filter. This picture alone has been my inspiration to hit AK on our trip in December for evening EMH (which I always avoid like plague) and because of that, I think he said he used the Sigma 30 1.4 for this shot on a tripod doing a longish exposure. I found out when taking shots of my Christmas tree this year that the longer the exposure, the better my stars were. :thumbsup2

I remember that I subbed to that thread. Here is the quote from Jeff when someone told him he had a "nice use of the star filter."

Thanks for the comment. Did not use a starlight filter- the flare came naturally with the small aperature (8 Blades = 8 Points ;) ) .

My new tripod is a Bogen/Manfrotto 190XDB with 486C2 Ballhead (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/496266-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto__190XDB_Tripod_Legs_Black_.html).

See above, I bet you were typing while I was posting :)

ETA: this isn't a Disney shot, but it does demonstrate the stars on the lights without using a filter. I used f/16 for this shot of my Christmas tree and a 5 second exposure. You can definitely see some stars. I would imagine in AK since the bulbs over the walkway are much larger than those on a Christmas tree, you'd have the same effect, just larger like with Jeff's image.

Jeff seems to have used f/11 and a 10 second exposure for his AK shot.

Wow- there is like a whole debate going on here. :scratchin

Just to clarify- no star filter was used in any of the shots- I don't even have one. Pretty much any lens will flare like that when stopped down with a bright light source in the frame like that.

I'm just now getting into photography and have an obsession with beautiful night pictures!

I have a Canon PowerShot SX10IS that I bought a few months ago and I love it! I took a few good night shots in automatic handheld last month in WDW. Just wondering for the future!!

Thanks!

Usually I do...

In the first two of my shots above, I didn't have my tripod with me, but used a garbage can top and a bench to lay the camera on for the shots. In the third of my shots, it was handheld with a slightly higher ISO.

In general, the best night shots will be obtained with the lowest ISO (regardless of camera), a tripod, and either a cable or remote release, or using the self-timer to take the shot. Manual settings are usually best, in that you can tailor the aperture for just the right depth or light saturation, and the shutter for the precise length of exposure - but Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority both work well too - and for those not at all comfortable with settings, Auto or P mode in a pinch will do.

If you don't have a cable or remote release, best to set the self timer to snap the pic for you - even the tiny amount of vibration your hand causes in pressing and releasing the button can show up in the shot. And if you don't have a tripod, any level surface will do in a pinch - a garbage can, fence, wall, ledge, bench, etc.

When all else fails, you can get by with handheld shots - if you've got something to lean on you can help steady yourself for longer exposures, and cameras with image stabilization can help a little too.

A totally different look is shooting high ISO night shots - these are a little grainier, usually darker, not as saturated in color, but can deliver an interesting look and capture the feel of 'night'. These can often be done handheld, as long as the shutter speeds are 1/2 second or faster. The firehouse photo I took handheld is ISO400. This shot I used ISO800 well after sunset, handheld:

http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/108793184.jpg

You can see the shadows are darker, with less detail, and there is a bit more graininess in the shadows and darker areas. It doesn't have that laser-sharp look that long exposure night shots do, nor as much color or saturation. But at the same time, it's a different style of photo and some folks enjoy this type of photography too.

Awesome shots everyone! I love night shots, but I haven't had much practice with them. I'm hoping to get some good ones when we go back in September. Here's a shot from Wishes last year:

Here is the link to the whole thread, it's only a few pages but dedicated to AK at night.

Nice shots Bonnie,

May I be so bold as to suggest that on your next trip, you consider trying night shots in Av mode, and going for a narrow aperture (set it for something like f/18), and see how that works. You may find that you get sharper images with very good color rendition. I'm assuming you're using a tripod, as that would be mandatory with that long of an exposure.

Regards,

Boris

Mizzoumom,
You can do fine work with an S3 IS. I'd give you a few key pieces of advice:

Tripod
ISO100
aV or tV mode

If you want to take great night shots with your camera, the most basic advice is to use a very slow shutter speed with very low ISO...as low as you can go. This will help avoid noise in your shots and keep things clean, saturated, and detailed. BUT, when shooting slow shutter shots, the camera must be absolutely still - even your finger pressing the shutter can vibrate it. So set it up on a tripod (or you can use a fence, wall, trashcan, or any other level surface), then use the self-timer feature to take the shot. That way you can press the shutter down and let go of the camera, and let it snap the shot when the timer triggers.

Slow shutters can be achieved easily in Manual mode, Shutter Priority Mode, and Aperture Priority mode. Which you use is up to you - you can also get by temporarily by using the Night Scene mode on your camera until you feel more comfortable. In aperture priority mode, you set the aperture to a lower number (which means bigger aperture) when you want the shutter to not take quite as long - but you can also sometimes narrow your field of focus so something close comes in focus, but something farther may be a bit put of focus. The camera will determine how long it needs to fire the shutter open to get enough light and take the photo. If you set the aperture to a larger number (smaller aperture), the camera may need to take longer to get the proper exposure - you may want this though, because it will not only expand your field of focus, but will also mean longer streaks or trails for any moving objects in your shot, since they are in motion through your shot for a longer period of time.

In Shutter priority, you let the camera choose the aperture, and you just tell it how long you want to expose the shutter for. Usually with night shooting, your shutter speeds will be in the seconds - anywhere from 1 to 30 seconds on your camera.

Manual mode just lets you choose both the aperture and the shutter - so as you grow more confident that you know what the settings will produce, you can start moving to that manual mode.

The only limitation your camera will have is taking handheld snapshots at night - for that, you need a very high ISO (800-1600 minimum) and a very sensitive or 'fast' lens with an aperture of F1.4-1.8 or so...your camera's aperture is only F2.8, and your ISO isn't very usable above 400 or so.

But most people think of those lovely, colorful, sharp night shots of buildings and landscapes and streaky lights...and your camera can do those just fine!

All of these night shots are great. Just curious, when were these pictures taken? There is hardly people in a lot of the posted shots; I would like to eventually take pictures without crowds.

All of these night shots are great. Just curious, when were these pictures taken? There is hardly people in a lot of the posted shots; I would like to eventually take pictures without crowds.

One thing to remember with slow shutter photography - people walking in front of your camera mean less and less the longer the shutter speed goes. You can actually make people virtually disappear just by using a long shutter - say 30 seconds. What the camera is doing is opening the shutter and leaving it open for all that time - anything still will be captured in sharp detail...anything moving slightly will be blurred, and anything moving continuously through the frame will be but a faint ghost trail or even completely gone. Since the moving person is only in any given spot in your shot for a fraction of a second, the whole rest of the time the camera is exposing there isn't a person there. So the 29 1/2 seconds of the shot with noone there will 'overwrite' the 1/2 second there was a person there.

So many night shots you see look like noone was in the parks, when often people were there, but you only see them show up in the shot if they were standing still for a reasonable period of time.

Just to give you an example of how effectively you can blur people out, here's a 13 second exposure of the Haunted Mansion taken during the day...you KNOW there was a line there...but they were moving forward during my exposure, and in the end you basically don't see anyone there:

http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/107208635.jpg

If you look close, you may notice a faint blur or darker area where people would be.

In this one, it's the Liberty Square bridge from the castle hub, in the middle of the afternoon. Hundreds of people walked through this shot, but it was a 30-second exposure, so you can barely notice anyone was there (someone in a red shirt stopped or was moving slow, and picked up a little streak on the left side, and people coming down the castle bypass in white shirts picked up a bit):

http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/107208665.jpg

That principle is what makes night shots often look so quiet and abandoned. They are often there, but you just don't see them because they stayed in motion:

http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/113609269.jpg

(You know that place is never empty at 9:30pm, with the dinner crowds!)

Hope that helps explain it a bit!
