View Full Version : Want to Piece Together a Price History?

Maybe if we all "fill-in the blanks" we'll come up with the pricing history of DVC. Here's what I've got:

May 1993 --$56.00 (190 minimum/230 suggested)

May 1996 -- $62.75 (not sure this is right)

Sept. 1998 received a notice that price was going up from $62.75 to $65

January 1999 -- Official increase to $65.00

Price goes to $67.00 (When?)

January 2001 -- $72.00

Pam, I know for sure in March 95 it was $62/pp.

We paid 62/pp for 210 OKW points in 95 and 62/pp for 200 VB points in 1996. Both were in May/June of those years.

I guess this jump to $72 isn't the first radical increase. We bought in spring '92 at $51 and I know it was still $51 in the fall of '92.

$56 in May '93 would also have been a $5 increase in a short time, maybe one move. We haven't seen any prices between $51 and $56, so maybe this is actually the second $5 move...

I guess there were no prices between $51 and $56...interesting. It seems that this $5 increase is not unprecedented. I guess that the interest in OKW back then and the inquiries they are getting for VWL and BCV are making them feel confident again...that 2042 date has to start taking a toll sometime.

Do people realize that it is not really 2042? It is January, 2042!! Really only 41 years from today.

The $67 price increase actually went into effect on June 15, 2000. Disney had announced that it would go into effect by May 15, but the guides were honoring the $65 price per point through the June date.

I know Rich, it's crazy. I'm wondering how BCV will fly with less than 40 years on the contract. (In looking through old papers I did read that DVD can build resorts that do not have to be part of DVC. Maybe they will be coming up with "DVC II".)

Guys, 42 years is not a big deal to some buyers because they over a certain age! If you're 50, surely losing DVC rights at the tender age of 91 does not seem entirely earthshaking. Even if you are 40, you're going to have to stop going to WDW at 81? I'm sorry, that just doesn't seem like a major trauma to me.

If I was 20-something this might be an issue, but how many 20-year-olds can afford DVC? Even if you had a high paying job you'd have a house to buy, family to start, etc.

If the thing was ending in 20 years I could see some stress involved. Maybe.

Hi,
51.00 in Feb. of 92.
Rich, I could have sworn shortly after our purchase that it did go up, like in the summer of 92. I vaguely remember being smug about the increase and how we had already seen an appreciation. Perhaps your price was 51.00 because you were already a member and added on before the price increase.

This post got me to thinking and I finally dug out our old papers, and I do mean dug out, boy I found tons of stuff!! Anyway, I know I have posted in the past that I thought we paid $50 per point, but I was wrong. Hubby just calculated (and he's a math teacher so I have faith in him!) and it turns out we paid $51 per point in December 1991. You had to buy 230 points back then. We were talking about this this evening and we both didn't remember Disney making any big deal out of what price it was per point, they just talked about the total price.

Now that I have all my old paperwork scattered all over the floor I think I'll go through some of it. I can't believe I kept so much stuff!!!

I know someone that bought in Oct '92 and they paid $51. We spoke about an add on at that time and the price was $51. The price was not $54.5 in August of '92. We heard of the pending increase when we bought and also when our friends bought, that is why we looked at the add on but decided to wait till our first trip to do it.

Pre-Construction - $48(230 pt. minimum)
Jan. '92 -$50
Feb. '91 - $51
July '92 - $54.50
May '93 - $56 (190 pt. minimum)
July '93 - $57.50
Jan. '94 - $57.50 (190 pt. minimum)
March '95 - $62
Fall '95 - $62.75
May '96 - $62.75
May '97 - $62.75 (150 pt. minimum)
May '98 - $62.75
Jan. '99 - $65
Oct. '99 - $65 (notice of OKW selling out)
June 2000 - $67
Jan. 2001 - $72.00

Here's what we've got so far. (Thanks everyone for digging through your old papers.) There is an example in my May papers of a 190 point purchase. I think it was fairly new to do that since they talked up the 230 package and stressed that trades wouldn't be possible with less (they were still with RCI then so maybe you had to have a week in a 1 bedroom for those trades.)

I'm not sure if they called it MB, but the first way they ran an incentive was to allow people who bought while on vacation to apply part of the costs from their current WDW hotel bill towards the downpayment. I'm not sure about the details on that one.

Pam I don't know if this will help you, but I noticed we started our paperwork in Oct of 1991 and the price was the same-$51 per point, although again, I could not find anything that actually stated a price per point, just the entire purchase price. I am assuming that $51 per point was the price from the very beginning. We started inquiring about DVC during the Spring of 1991 and although they would not sent us any info until Oct, I don't think the price was ever any lower. Just my 2 cents.

We bough in Jan. 1992 and the price we paid was $50 per point. I know this for a fact, because 300 points cost us $15,000. I remember so clearly because we charged it on the American Express card and I said to my DW, can we charge that much. Our guide told us they we selling pre-construction at $48 per point and were going to raise it to $51 in February, it was part of our decision to purchase then, even though we had just gone to look. The minimum was 230 points, which was supposed to be 1 weeks stay in a 2 bedroom during the middle season.

As an interesting aside, how many people took that picture in the balloon over Conch Flats?

Yes, Pam, you are correct, in part.

The BCV price of $78.00 is what I think DVC will charge for direct purchases, not re-sale.

WLV is obviously the current price of $72.00.

And the BWV resales will be $75.00 by June 2001.

And the OKW resales will be $68.00 by June 2001.

I have a feeling that we will never agree on how to calculate what the per point resale price actually is because there are too many variables.

Sorry I went off topic a bit, I am new and have no history to mull around.

That is pretty amazing. Disney was charging different people different prices. In October of '92, my best friends bought at $51 per point and I almost added on at $51 per point.

I find that very difficult to believe. I know for an absolute fact that in October of '92 the price was getting ready to go up, but was definitely, beyond the shadow of any doubt at all, $51 per point in October of '92.

It is possible that prorated dues added some, but dues were under $3 per point back then, so that can't be the difference....no, the price was $51 in October of '92 for sure.

Some time between Feb/92 and July/92 the price per point increased from $51 to $54.50. It has never been negotiable.
Those of us who have posted that we paid $54.50 during the summer of 1992 have the documentation to prove it.
If you can prove that your friend paid $51 in the fall of 1992, I will certainly be in touch with DVC for an explanation.

Rich,
For the sake of my sanity (what little is left) I went through some of my paperwork. In Sept. of 1992 I received a letter from my guide. In this he informs me that as of November 1, 1992 the price would be jumping from the current 54.50 per point to 56.00 per point, with the minimum purchase being 12880.00 (which is a min. of 230 points). This leads me to conclude that between Feb. 92 and Sept. 92 there was, indeed, a price increase of 3.50 per point.
If I were in your position, I would find it difficult to argue with members who clearly have the facts of their contracts. And....with members who have written proof of increases.

For sure, I was just saying how it is funny that at the time (on this thread) it was a in question if BCV would fly or not and how well it has turned out.

Creeping socialism was seen hundreds of years ago when James Madison said: "I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations."

We bought in May 92 and it was $52

Gail, I just was in touch with someone from the old Prodigy days. I'm glad to see some of us "old dvc'ers" are still around. Still have the hard hat? We should get a thread about remember when and see what we can come up with from the early days. Remember Cleary's Tree?

Here is a more recent thread with a compilation of reported pricing. Since this is compiled from recollections reported on this site, it is definitely not an "official" listing , but it should provide a close idea of pricing for DVC resorts over the past 16 years.

[QUOTE=Richyams;121875]In August of '92 the price was NOT $54.50, it was $51. For absolutely certain.

Sorry Richyams, you are wrong.

We bought July 25th, 1992, and the cost was $12,535.00 for 230 points, or $54.50/point. I'm looking at the documents right now.

Don't have any idea about the pricing, but the mention of Richyams brings back some great memories. His posts were always fun to read. He would still up the boards and incite the non-OKW owners. If his family still read the boards I hope they know that he is definitely missed.

June of $95 HHI was still available at the preopening rate of $56.50 (but no free park tickets) with a 210 point minimum....we bought at OKW at $60.00 that same month (with free tickets) there was a 150 point minimum...I think the regular rate was $62.50 but part of a special sales promotion included a cash back thing that brought the price down to $60/point
