Two things I have learned about shopping....The first Item I liked was always the Item eventually purchased after shopping countless hours...:thumbsup2

Second thing: Always buy the most expensive, because you get a lot more for not that much more....:confused3

Walt :cool1:

Well you're definately right about that one. But its still fun. Its a girl thing. We are programmed to do it.
Must say though Sean and Scott made a lovely pair last year shopping together in Virginia. Lori and i couldn't stop laughing at them when they back with loads of clothes.

I tend to do my homework before I shop. Particularly for a big item. For example, I am eligible for a new phone next week, so I have been reading everything I can find about the BlackBerry Storm. I might as well get the best! I have never had a nice cell phone, so this time I am splurging!

Been thinking about a home Blackberry as well since I am losing my work BB...Would like to hear the results...:thumbsup2

What service provider do you use? :)

I haven't yet got a BB. It isn't considered an official expense for work, but I want to get one so that I have access to the internet while sitting places like doctor's offices, outside a store while Elaine shops (couldn't resist that one!). I also like the calendar application on it. I think I will even be able to DIS mobily! I get reimbursed a portion of my cell phone charges for work. They pay for the basic service, and we are responsible for any add ons.

We have Verizon Wireless. When I moved to CT, I had AT&T formerly known as Cingular, but got rid of it and paid the early termination fees. The service was terrible. I was dropping calls like crazy and despite the ads, I did not have "more bars in more places!" We switched to Verizon Wireless because it seemed to be the bigger network in this area of the country. The service is good and I really can't complain.

Right now I am using a crappy LG Chocolate. I can't stand that phone and can't wait to get rid of it! Elaine had one too, but hers kept dying on her. On the 3rd time, she just got a new one. She has an LG ENV2. Its a decent phone and she has become a text queen on it.

Do you have Dish TV. We have a DVR but its with our cable Co. At present we have 62 channels but with Dish you get 200 and we would have 2 DVR's. for the same price im paying for cable.
Dan

Yes, our TV is through Dish Network. We've had it for at least a couple of years, and I have no complaints. I thinkwe have a smaller package (maybe 120 or 180 - I forget) but we have all the channels we need, and the price is better than cable. We don't watch a ton of TV, but we have the kids' channels that DS likes (Disney Channel, of course!) and SciFi, Bravo, TLC, etc. for us. We also get local channels - that's what sold us on it. Once we could get local channels we were ready to switch.

Pete was considering an iPhone until he talked to a couple of people around here who have one and they said the cell coverage isn't good at all. He got an iPod touch instead, and we both have Motorola phones. I like the quality of my Motorola much better than the 2 LG phones I had before it.

My LG Chocolate has terrible call quality. The microphone picks up everything. I try to only talk on it, when no one is around or no conversations because it picks up everything. This is especially true in the car. I have been on the phone with people and they can tell from the background noise that I am in a car from the road noise, etc that the phone picks up.

A lot of this has to do with the area you live in. The AT&T/Cingular coverage here is pretty good but I've not heard the same for other parts of the country. Also, the 2nd version uses the G3 network, which has been a big problem in parts of the country where this service isn't really widely available. I'm glad I held onto my old iPhone!

I've had an iPhone since the beginning and I can't imagine living without it! It's so much more than a phone - the technology is so much further along than anyone elses touch screens. And with all the apps you can add now, it's even better. I love the fact that the QWERTY keyboard only pops up when you need it. I have arthritis and I just can't handle the Crackberry keyboard on certain days.

But the bestest part is that it's software driven!!! So if you have a problem all you need to do is resync it, just like your iPod. Poof - everything is back where it should be - no more lost contacts or text messages!

Pete and I have done a couple of weekend trips without Thomas, but that's it. I couldn't leave him behind for a week. That's why I loved the cruise...he was there, he was having fun, but Mom and Dad got some time to themselves also. It was the perfect mesh of "adult getaway" and family vacation. But we've also done trips up to Door County as a family, and that was so much fun too.

I think the key is planning age-appropriate trips. Right now, we're doing Disney stuff, beach/lake/pool type trips. When he's a bit older, Pete wants to take us out to Washington DC, Virginia, and stuff like that. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to Thomas now, but once he's further along in school, seeing the Lincoln Memorial 9for example) will mean something.

Sounds good to me. When I do shop, I know exactly what I am getting, I get it and get out.

That is the truth. He gets what he wants and needs then gets out. He likes to shop online too. I would rather go to the store. I am not much of a shopper but once in awhile I like to go. He is no shopper anymore. He used to be about 15 years ago. Di

We switched from Cingular/AT&T to Verizon Wireless and our Verizon service is horrible, many more dropped calls with Verizon than we ever had with Cingular/AT&T. The only reason we switched is because Lina had more friends with Verizon and the texting plan was better for her. Once our service plan ends in August, I think Hazel and I are going back to AT&T and Lina can stay with Verizon if she wants, she can get her own plan then.......

I'll send you what I find, but you're probably looking at $65-$75 for the one day. However, this is without any insurance which I think you need, correct? We are covered by our auto insurance and credit cards. If I remember correctly, you are not.

You may want to consider one-way DCL transfers instead. Those should be $35 each, so a total of $105. However, if you don't leave until late afternoon, that may not be best either.

We definitely need a car as we're off to Kennedy that day then onto DTD for dinner then our flight home later that evening. Its gonna be a loooong day

If money was no object and neither is time, name ONE place you'd like to spend 1 week in.

So here's a question, why is it 3.5X as much to fly from Chicago to the UK than it is for the UK to fly to Chicago? :confused3

Same airline and flights, just reversing the course. It doesn't matter if the flight there is on the same day as what would be the UKers return flight. They are just robbing us blind for that.

Sorry UKers, if I could have gotten the $378 RT ($328 for DS), we'd be there. Instead, it is $1,344 with no child discounts per ticket.

Wow! - thats steep!:scared1: - please dont complain though - its probably the one and only thing we get cheaper than you do:rotfl2: ... everything else is twice as much money and half the quality or portion size:rolleyes:

We are thinking of doing that too. Its on St Thomas right. I get confused which island has what on it? Need to do more research:thumbsup2

Dan we get a 15% discount from Verizon as Salvation Army employees. I just had to show either a business card, or insurance card to the sales rep.

Suz gets 20% off through her office with Verizon. In a recent Consumer Report, Verizon ranked either 1 or 2 in all the major markets for service.

Okay, I'm ready. My dream vacation would be to travel Europe. I would like to take Erika my youngest daughter to see Germany where she was born. Di

Parts of Germany are beautiful. Neil works for a german company and goes on business most years to Heidelberg. Its a georgous town. Ellis and I went with him once. Berlin is also fascinating, but obviously for very differnet reasons.

Both of my Dad's parents were born and raised in Germany and I've never been there

Is that the new touch screen one? Suz says she wants one of those, but she really doesn't have a need. I just want to get a simple EnV, or what ever it is called. It has the full keyboard (flip up type). We'd then add the 250 text message plan to each phone for $5 per line. We'd never use more than 250 of them in a month, but at $0.75 each, they add up quickly.

I had a good visit with Mary at lunch. But she's bored.

So, you can tell how better she is. She was told by her doctor the only reason they're keeping her in at this point is for one of the medications. She's on a product called Coumadin which suppresses blood clotting and they have to get the dosage right, too little and it won't provide any clot protection, too much and open wounds won't stop bleeding. As of right now the blood tests are not showing high enough levels, so, we wait.

Day One:
Today was Epcot day. We started our day with a trip to the Norwegian Pavilion. Castle Akershus to be exact to have breakfast with the Princesses. Upon entering Leah and Stuart got their picture taken with Belle. Then we were shown our table. Breakfast started and we noted Mulan making her rounds from table to table. The breakfast was about 50% buffet style and 50% served. Buffet consisted of rolls, biscuits, Danishes and croissants. In addition to the breads was a lush layout of various fruits as well as salmon and cheeses. On the table was a potato/cheese mixture yummy scrambled eggs accompanied by bacon and sausage. We all ate ourselves silly! Mulan finally came by the table and she was very interactive with the kids. This was already starting out to be one of the best character breakfasts that I had ever done (I’ve NEVER been happy with a character breakfast at Disneyland). Since it took a while for Mulan to get to us and it appeared that we were nearing the end of our meal, I started to worry. We should have had at least 4 Princesses stop by the table. Only 1 so far! Then suddenly in quick succession, Aurora, Jasmine and Snow White came by and we finished the breakfast feeling that we both got a yummy meal and a fun time. I’ve got some great video of the encounters that I will probably put on you tube.

We spent much of the day in the Future world segment of Epcot, seeing many of the things that we missed on the first trip. The temperature here in Florida this time of year starts out fairly chilly in the morning, warming up nicely in the afternoon (we had to shed all of our coats by 11 a.m.) and cooling off quite a bit once the sun goes down. Here’s a run-down of the wait times of the park right now (for those of my friends online who are interested):
At 9:48am we hit Test Track with a 20 minute stated wait and boarded in just 14 minutes.
Mission Space at 10:28am had a 5 minute wait for both orange and green sections and we didn’t wait nearly that long. However, after we got off the ride the orange section wait time had increased to 20 minutes.
Spaceship Earth at 10:56 am quoted a 30 minute wait time and we were on in 11 minutes.
The Seas with Nemo and friends at 11:39 quoted a 15 minute wait time and we waited 13 minutes.
Living with the Land at 12:44am stated 5 minutes wait and we were onboard in much less time.
Soarin’ at 1:52pm quoted a 60 minute wait and we only waited 34 minutes.
And the last ride of the day was Maelstrom at 3:50 with at 30 minute quoted wait time and we were sailing in 13 minutes.

We also took advantage of the new Kim Possible secret agent adventure in Norway. We were given a cell phone with secret instructions to travel about the land Helping Kim Possible solve a mystery. The Phones were a lot of fun with all of their interactivity and the elements of the surroundings synchronized with the activity of the phone made for a really fun time. My kids LOVED this activity. (7 and 4 years) .

When it was time to call it a day we were all ready to go back to the resort. We had a light meal at the Riverside Mill and then strolled over to the playground on Ol’ Man Island. The kids had a great time while Laura and I enjoyed s’mores by the campfire. We finally got into our room at 7pm exhausted. Well, off to bed to start a new adventure in the Morning!

Day Two:
Animal Kingdom day. We started today off very late. I set the alarm clock but it did not go off. And I had forgotten to schedule a wake-up call. As a result we woke at 7:10 when we wanted to be awake at 6:00! After a getting ready as quickly as possible and boarding the bus, we were deposited at Animal Kingdom at 8:25. Park hours today were 9-6 with an extra magic hour in the morning, which meant that we blew half of our head start! As is my custom we made a bee-line for the Kilimanjaro Safari then ran across the park to Expedition: Everest we got a fast pass and then went for the Kali River Rapids. The Safari was great. The kids loved seeing the animals, Stuart really didn’t remember much of this from before so he was pretty happy with it. Leah however did NOT like the river rapids. Even with a poncho, she got a small amount of water on her jeans and was miserable. Leah was too short for Everest and we had to switch pass it. Stuart kept his eyes closed on much of his first ride but for his second ride we was a bit more brave. In Dino-land USA the kids really enjoyed the playground area and found an area where they could dig in sand and uncover mammoth bones. I think they could have spent much of the day there. For Lunch I had planned for the Tusker House in Africa. It turned out to be wildly popular with a very long wait list. Luckily we had reservations and only waited about 10 minutes. Since we made our reservations during a set time for the restaurant we got a pass for preferred seating at the Finding Nemo Musical. The lunch was yummy. It was buffet-style which wasn’t so good for Laura, who wanted to relax. But it was all-you-can-eat which appealed to the kids since they were able to pick what they wanted to eat and they got plenty of it. (Nice not to having to force them to eat.) The only gripe I had here was a waiter who wasn’t very attentive. It took a long time for us to get our drinks (I was almost finished eating!) and while he did refill, he needed to be prompted. But what really got me was after I told him that we were finished eating it took him a full 25 minutes from request to signing the bill. Now, I’ve never been a waiter before but I figure that if I were, I’d want to turn over a table as quickly as possible to maximize my tip income. So if a patron told me that he was ready to leave, I would facilitate his exit in due haste! Needless to say, I wasn’t overly generous in the tip category. So now we needed to hurry along to make the show. But we happened upon a small hidden area where Winnie, Eeyore and Tigger were hanging out. We were one of the first in line for this treat and once word got around a very long line ensued. Even with the short line, we waited a bit because the Characters were very good at spending time with each child. It was really pretty cool. When we reached the show were just in time. Because of the tickets we scored at Tusker house we had great seats waiting for us w/o any line to stand in. The show was primo! After this Laura wanted to get some more pics of the kids so we headed to Camp Minnie-Mickey, where Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy were waiting. This was probably one of the greatest Character Meets that we have ever done. Including the Disney Cruise. There was never a long line for any of the Characters. And again each Character took time with each child. Still we were in and out in record time for having met 4 characters. By this time our day in the Animal Kingdom was done and it was time to board a nearly empty bus back to the resort. Had a great meal at the Riverside Mill again and then relaxed at the campfire again while the kids played in the playground. We ended the day with plenty of time to get a good nights sleep. Here’s the stats for the day.

So far the Disney Dining Plan has saved me $41.66 on the food that we have purchased.

Wait Times:
Kilimanjaro Safari at 8:50 showed a wait time of 10 minutes and we actually waited 6 minutes.
Kali River Rapids opened at 10:00 and we arrived there at 10:07 and walked on.
Expedition: Everest at 10:31 had a wait time listed of 25 minutes. We had gotten a fast pass (first one of the trip) and walked on at 10:40.
Dinosaur at 11:43 showed a wait time of 30 minutes and actually took us 19 minutes to begin our ride.
Primeval Whirl at 4:03pm showed a wait time of 35 minutes (due to technical difficulties) and we got in line anyway and only waited 13 minutes.

We haven’t dined in the Riverside Mill yet for breakfast but its usually pretty sparse when we are there. I’ve asked about the rumored closures in other buildings but those I asked either did not know or will not say. The Ol’ Man Island Pool seems to be getting some major attention. I’ve been told that the pool is being resurfaced and I see that in places they have actually removed large areas of the gunite. In addition to the pool the slide is also be refinished. I was told that they were even working on it’s structural integrity. I’ll try to post some pics. If there’s been any cutbacks at all in WDW I have to say that I’d be hard pressed to come up with a way that it has affected our vacation.

Day 3:
Rest Day! We slept in today. Then got up to eat at Boatwright’s which is the Table Service dining establishment. They are closing this for breakfast later this month, so I wanted to enjoy it while it lasted. I have to say, I’m not sure why they are closing for breakfast. From what I saw the restaurant was empty with only a few families dining. Yet when we asked for a table we were made to wait! Lack of employees? Not from where I stood. Were we one of the few families looking to dine there? Nope. Quite a few checked in behind us and continued to do so once we were seated. I have to say that the closure must have some other reason than the economy. After breakfast we planned to go to Downtown Disney where I spent a small fortune on souvenirs. Our pin collection grew nicely though. Laura and I went to a DVC presentation. Unfortunately, It took about two hours of our time and really dented my plans for the day. But we got a lot more information on the vacation club and we think that should we invest in it we will have our eyes wide open. I tell you, they sure make it inviting to buy now rather than later. I almost jumped at it, but I really want to buy when I have money in hand rather than borrowing it. Enough about that, after DVC we ate at Earl of Sandwich which had very yummy sandwiches. And boarded a boat for a ride back to our resort.

We passed the tree houses that are being rebuilt. They look almost completed. We were told that they will be DVC properties when completed. We got our swimsuits and headed back to swim at Port Orleans: French Quarter. Here’s my appraisal of the PO:FQ Pool was great, the kids loved the slide. The property is beautiful much nicer than I expected. The food court was small and I didn’t prefer many of the choices. Although they had a better pizza selection than Riverside which only offers cheese and pepperoni. The employees at the food court were sluggish and did not exude a very Disneyesque atmosphere. The gift shop was also small and uninspired. We decided to walk back to Riverside rather than taking the boat and it was a great walk and beautiful in the moonlight. I wish that I could bottle the essence of that walk and take it home to share with everyone. But nothing I could do would really relate how nice it was. Pictures would be drab, video would be boring, and my pitiful words would be less than adequate. Suffice to say it was one of those moments that needs to be experienced and savored for it is gone too fast.

On our last trip to WDW we had chosen this breakfast, and believe it or not we got it free! :cool1: :cool1:

There was a power failure at the Askershus Restaurant, so we were directed to Electric Umbrella and told to order whatever we wanted that it was complimentary. When we were done eating, we were told to walk to Askershus where the Princesses would greet us. They had a walkway roped off and we were able to greet each princess individually. It was a nice private meet and greet and free to boot!

Dan, we changed from cable TV to the Dish Network about 2 years ago. Did you know, of the 36 cruise yet to sail before ours, only 9 will be going on the Traditional Eastern Cruise? The other Easterns will stop in either St. Croix or Tortola.

If we didn't get messed up with August, our cruise would have been going to St. Croix (the second Eastern in a month was tending to go to the "special" destination, but because there were 3 Easterns in August, the first cruise each month starting in Sept goes to the "special" islands).

One of the doctors at work just got back from an Eastern with a stop in St. Croix. She said it was very nice. She also said the Magic was not very full and the servers were really trying to make a good impression so you'd rebook. She said they were offering all kinds of incentives for rebooking and "referrals", it really seemed to her like Disney is hurting financially.

They are hurting I believe. They extended the "7 for 4" offer now through Aug 15. I bet the "free dining" comes in after that.

I suspect huge discounts on rooms for October.

I also think that there will be a lot of upgrades for this group. If they can't fill the ship in Winter, they sure aint going to fill it in October. I bet most of the inside cabins will get windows and the windows get a balcony. Us in the SPH rooms won't get anything.

These are tough times.

Sounds like your family had a great day. I have never heard of The Kim Possible mystery. That is one thing the grandkids and I haven't done. Well keep up the great trip report. Di

Day 3:

Another great two days Steve. I learned about Earl of Sandwich while at DTD. We loved it. Really enjoyed my three cheese sandwich. I think that is what it was called. Now we have one in San Antonio. I don't think it will ever do the business the one does in DTD. Di

:lmao: :rotfl2: kali river rapids.
one year, robin, cassie and i rode it 11 times straight. it wasnt crowded so they just let us stay on. robin and cassie kept getting soaked, but i somehow managed to stay mostly dry. robin even made me change seats a few times, but we still spun and they got soaked and i didnt.:confused3
she kept saying "we're riding this thing till you get wet!!!!"
good times:grouphug:

The last time grandkids and I were at Animal Kingdom (June, 2008) they rode Kali River Rapids continously for probably an hour. They also kept riding Everest. At least 5 times. I rode Everest the first time but I needed to get off since I felt alittle queezy. (sp) They had a blast and were soaken wet from the Rapids. Diane

Good night. We had a bad hail/rain storm tonite. Alittle spooky. Kids and dog were afraid Kristen my daughter said. Erika my daughter in Dallas said she was under a tornado warning. wow weird weather all of sudden. I wish it rained more for our poor grass. Walt and I took Asiah out for ribs tonite. That is what she picked for her supper treat. She had a great time. The entire time she kept on saying it was scrumptous.(sp) It was a real barbecue place so there was no plates. We ate on paper. She got a charge out of this. Napkins were paper towels rolls on the table. She never eats bread and she ate two pieces. She said the bread was squishy not like her mom's bread. She was so cute. She was lots of fun to listen to her tell us all kinds of stories about school. Elijah went with mom to school for Mom and son dinner. Well it is 1130 and I am pooped. I better get to bed. Diane

Strange you should mention that - one of my jobs on my list for today is to price up a cat 12 instead of our SPH. If its loads cheaper we may swap.

I'm shocked. I just put in for Cat 6 and our cruise is only GTY.

Karen,

You priced it wrong. You took the price from the first page of the reservation. You need to go in a couple pages and remove the Transfers ($207 for the 3 of you) and the insurance ($277). The net before the 10% discount you got for rebooking onboard would be $2,563.74.

Now in looking at an email I had from our Dreams rep, the discount about is about $230 for the rooms you and I have, so if you even figure $200, the total for the Cat 11 should price out around $2,375. Only about a $175 savings, but you'll be giving up the window.

I'd keep the window, but if you give it up, I know there are several people on this board that are interested in your room. ;)

My guess is it is made of Jelly Beans (or Jelly Belly's) and it is in a candy store somewhere (such as Goofy's Candy Co. - maybe on Westside?).

Not jelly beans. Not a candy store.

Not jelly beans, but it is kind of on the right track. Look very closely at the little pieces! ;)

We had a room assignment when we got our one and only upgrade. We had room 2550 and got upgraded to a Cat 7. :woohoo:

We were happy. Other people were getting 3 category upgrades - 9 to 6. I'll take any upgrade though.

Is there any rhyme or reason to upgrades? The only reason I ask (since I am happy with our cat 8) is we'll be linked with my in-laws and such and we have 4 rooms right in a row.

I think they do take the linking into account when they do upgrades.

We have been upgraded twice, once from Cat 2 to Cat 1 (yes, that would be the Walt Disney Suite - I still can't believe it!) and another time from Cat 6 to Cat 4. In both cases, we were notified by our TA a week prior to the cruise, not at the pier.

On both cruises, upgrades were available at the pier, for a price which was cheaper than at booking. We met some people that paid to upgrade at the pier. At some point at sign went up that said 'Captain Mickey says the ship is full and there are no upgrades available'. I have also heard that some people have gotten upgrades at the pier, but I haven't actually seen it or met anyone who got one of these.

Correct. :)

Wow...the Walt Suite!! Yes, pics please!

I don't really care about an upgrade too much (we liked our location last time, and we're just down the hall a couple of rooms from where we were in 2007) but it would be a really good way to escape the in-laws! :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao:

I will have to think too Nancy. Well I am off to school with grandkids. I will volunteer in the library putting books back and then to lunchroom to help the little kiddies. While I am at lunch I will eat lunch with Elijah and Asiah. They like me to bring them something on Wednesday. They don't like this Mexican food day. Walt has less than 3 weeks of work left. Those look pretty cool to me but I did like the Resort specific ones better. We have 3 different ones from Caribbean Beach, one from Port Orleans and even one from the Disney Cruise Line. A friend of ours bought us each one off of eBay for our 25th wedding anniversary cruise in 2005. Of course, I still have my CC mugs that my Konked Kooler came in sitting right here on my desk at work. :cutie:

They are hurting I believe. They extended the "7 for 4" offer now through Aug 15. I bet the "free dining" comes in after that.

I suspect huge discounts on rooms for October.

I also think that there will be a lot of upgrades for this group. If they can't fill the ship in Winter, they sure aint going to fill it in October. I bet most of the inside cabins will get windows and the windows get a balcony. Us in the SPH rooms won't get anything.

These are tough times.

I think they need to bring their prices down a bit.

Nerbiepie
02-11-2009, 01:11 PM
So with all this talk of upgrades I have to admit I would love to be bumped up for my first cruise.. if it was just Sean and I going I would have spent the same amount as now and gotten a verandah (drool). I am having high hopes of getting something because I booked in may and with the fuel surcharge thing everyone else rebooked.. so maybe...perhaps... I hope...lol but I will still be just as thrilled to be there no matter where we end up..lol

But if Jeff is right and everything is filling up.. I might be just outta luck huh?..lol

oh well meeting you guys will make up for any short comings I think :woohoo:
