It's tough to do, but we kept our trip this past October a secret from the kids for nine months. In return, we have this memory forever...

No, it was #6 for our son and #3 for our daughter. (There's a bigger age difference than it appears.)

In 2007, I surprised my youngest (then 11) with a quickie 4 day trip. He never saw it coming, as we had just gotten back in September from 12 days.
I asked him if he would come with me to pick my boss up at the airport, and if he did, I'd take him for breakfast afterwards (what is it with kids and breakfast? :lmao: )
So, we got there at 4am and parked in the lot. I had all the stuff packed, in the trunk. Then I made sure my camera was on the right setting (told him I was joking with my boss I was going to take her picture since it was such an early flight - gullible kids. LOL! ) And then I handed him the reservation.
'SERIOUS????" He asked. Like "Dont be messing with me, about something as serious as this!" - Youre not playing?? ( I have a tendency to tease for my own enjoyment ;) )
I said 'Nope - we gotta go, we got a plane to catch....and leave your coat, we dont need it"
He then asked "What about my clothes?" :rotfl: I told him they were all packed in the trunk. I asked him later - what if I would have said 'I didnt bring any"?? He said he wouldnt have cared. :rotfl2:
And ran (in single digit temps!) to the shuttle that takes you over to the terminal. :lmao:
It was awesome!
I agree - every should do it once. Your video was fantastic!!!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

That was so cute! I have seen a few surprises caught on video but that was great...they looked so nervous! Wait, you're not going to the Gone with the Wind thing? Is that what he said?
Anyway, we still have a long time before we can enjoy surprising our DS, but we already have it in the works. I am a teacher adn can never take time off outside of school breaks. I've always wanted to see WDW decorated at Christmas time and in 6 years, my break will be extra long due to the day that Christmas falls. Our plan is to have my son open gifts on Christmas morning and his last one to be that we are going to Disneyworld! Now, there is plenty of time to plan the details but, that's our plan...and I plan to have it all on tape to share!
Thanks for the late night smiles!

These are such special moments! We did it with our granddaughter when she as 7. She slept over that nite and about 6:00 a.m., her mother, myself, my husband and my other daughter all put on our sunglasses and proceeded to stand above her and wake her up! When she did, we all yelled 'we're going to Dw'! She says 'right now?' and we replied YES!!!! (I think there was a double flip in the bed!). We were all ready and packed. Got her dressed and out we went!!!! I imagine she waits for that day to come again! :rotfl2: Maybe we'll try it again when we go in November! :thumbsup2

Wait, you're not going to the Gone with the Wind thing? Is that what he said?
Yeah, in order to keep the secret, I had to tell him a little white lie. He was in the middle of youth football season, and was going to have to miss a game. The trip was planned long before he decided to play. But I couldn't tell him the REAL reason he would have to miss the game. So I made up a cover story that we (the kids and I) were going to surprise my wife with a trip to Atlanta to a big Gone With the Wind festival in Atlanta. There isn't really a festival that I know of, but DW loves GWTW - so the story seemed plausible to my DS. That's why both kids keep saying something about going to Atlanta.

Okay, you made me cry. Good job keeping the secret. I did that last year, we had dropped the two younger boys off at my mom's the night before, and then I told the other ones we were going to church with her in the morning. We got on the Interstate going the wrong way, and they didn't know what was going on. I held up their Mickey ears that were hidden in the front seat, and you should have heard the howl. Congrats again for making the surprise so special. :goodvibes

Hope you had a magical trip!

Watching that video gave me chills....That was so Awesome!!!!!!!!!
We are surprising our DDs (7 and 5) for our March trip, and it IS very tough to keep it a secret because my girls love to talk about Disney 24/7. Well, our plan of attack is that the girls think they are going to be spending a week with their grandparents (who live 3 hours away) because mom and dad are celebrating their 10 yr. wedding anniversary somewhere (they don't know where). Well, since our plane leaves at 7a.m., we will be getting them up very early so they are thinking we have to get on the rode at that time, and while they are eating their breakfast my DH is going to get a call (of course it will be me calling the house from my cell phone) from his parents saying something to the effect that the girls can't come because something came up. It will depress the girls a bit, until we tell them that the only other option is for them to come to Disney with us. That will definately lift their spirits back up.....I can not wait :cheer2:
Oh yeah, we are going to make sure we get this priceless memory on tape too :goodvibes

Thanks for posting that. So cute.
We booked a trip for May, but are keeping it a surprise from our kids. We're telling them we can't afford Disney until next year, but we're going to visit grandma in FL (so they won't be suspicious). The surprise will be when they notice us driving onto Disney property. :upsidedow
Now that I've seen your video, I'm going to have to make sure I have the camera out in the car to catch their reaction when they figure it out. :goodvibes

I'm an obsessed planner, yes I have a binder:rotfl2: , and I hope they don't hear or see anything. It's our first Christmas trip to the world!!!! I'm so excited I can hardly keep quiet!!!:cool1: :cheer2:

Wonderful! I puddled up. Reminds me of my children's reaction when we surprised them -except that mine forgot to ask when we were going, so that when we went out to the car (they were at school) and saw all of the luggage, they were surprised all over again.

That is priceless! I want to plan on surprising my DD with our trip. She knows that we want to go to WDW but I told her she needed to get bigger first.
I think it might be something with her growth chart though. Everyday she goes over, stands on her tip toes with her back against the wall saying "Look Mommy!!! I'm bigger now. Can we go see Mickey?"
So her seeing me reading my UG or working in my Disney binder really isn't an issue since she knows we are going. Just not when.

For Christmas 2005 we surprised our daughters age 9 and 5. We went to the airport on Christmas Eve and told them we were flying to their grandparents which we have never done before because they are only a 5 hour drive away. I had a note that I carried around with me to show counter people, security, and flight attendants that said not to say Orlando out loud. I was sure that if DD9 heard Orlando she would figure it out. Finally when we were an hour from Orlando on the plane I gave each girls a gift bag with a big card. I wrote in the card that the present inside was a clue to their Christmas present. Inside was Disney princess dresses, crowns, gloves, and shoes. It took a moment but the oldest finally yelled out to her younger sister that she thought we might be going to Disney. I confirmed it of course that then they both just started vibrating. The pilot then came on and congratulated them both on their surprise Christmas trip to Disney. They both wil never forget that surprise Christmas trip.

We havent told our little ones (almost 5 and 3) about out trip March 1st.
We kind of hinted we were going to Florida to my parents condo but looking for ideas on how to explain the car ride to the airport (my brother will be taking us) to them. They are young so kind of difficult.
This video was great, almost cried.

That's a great video! I want so badly to keep our May trip a secret from my oldest, but it'll be SOO HARD! We're going with my sister's family and everyone knows but him, so the chances of someone slipping before then are extremely high. It'll probably be ME!
If I can hold out, I plan to send him to school as normal, then pick him up just before lunch and say, "get in the car, we're going to Disney World," as calmly as I possibly can. I'm kind of debating whether I should surprise him or not, because he'll miss the last day of school and I am afraid he'll be upset that he didn't get to say good-bye to his friends (but they'll all be in his class next year, too, so I don't feel too bad).
Thanks for sharing your great surprise!

Great video, and awesome idea..... I however found other benefits in telling them before hand... Namely "Guys, remember if you're not good......."
:rotfl2: :rotfl2:
Now my kids rooms are cleaner then they've ever been, they eat everything they are given. No attitude or contradiction. At least until we return at the end of March.
Hey, maybe we can plan another trip.....

We made our trip a Christmas present for our kids. I ordered the customized maps online and wrapped those and gave them to my DD4 to open. She immediately figured out they were maps of Disney and she had a spry smile on her face but she wasn't quite sure enough. We had to coax her and ask her why would give her maps of Disney and then she asked if we were going and when I said yes, she screamed. My DS1 screamed then too, although he had no idea why.
