Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

12 miles for me today, then a short taper for the Sarasota half on Feb 15!

In other news, bought DD16 a car this week...and DH survived a round of layoffs at his company.

Duckie...I agree, get thee to a health care provider!

Everyone ready to start the Miles/Minutes game?

Sounds like a good week Mel!

Today I got a photo I had ordered from ASI from the half. I had added the virtual clock on the bottom and apparently I ran the Goofy in 2:26:57! :lmao:
Ya, the virtual clock has the Goofy emblem on it, not the half with Donald. :confused3

Wow, I'm getting a post in early on this week's thread. I'm still not back in training mode yet, but I got a workout in tonight anyway. I got a Wii for Christmas and tonight was the first time I had a chance to hook it up and play. I was kid-sitting for my niece and nephew so we gave it a workout. We did a lot of DDR, some boxing, tennis and baseball. I worked up a sweat and found out how uncoordinated I can be

I've been waiting to get the Wii Fit so I can try out the exercise program, but it's still sold out everywhere around here.

I've decided to cancel my membership at the Y. I have not been going as often as I would like and they raised their fee to $56/month. Once the weather breaks I'll be training outside anyway, so there's no point paying for something I'm not using. I have my spinner bike that I can xtrain on if it's too cold to go outside. And when I'm ready to go back indoors for training or to swim, they opened an LA Fitness closer to my house that is $25 month cheaper.

Hope everyone's training is going well.

My highlight was making it to the gym before they closed today! :cool1: Upper body work out with some very little running before the lights flashed and the door locked LOL

Tomorrow's weather is looking great and we are hoping to head out for a few *gasp* OUTDOOR miles. :goodvibes

Shan! Excellent Goofy time! :rotfl2:

I paid the local New Balance store a visit, looking for a new handheld bottle and came out with a new jacket, pants and skirt. I need to find out ahead of time when they are running 50% sales so I DON'T go :lmao: So my training today might not have been the most serious but the shopping for items to wear for training was :thumbsup2

Hope everyone else is having better luck in the training dept! Hoping to report good news on Sunday :)

I was outside wogging today and thought 'I must not be in Kansas anymore'. :) It was 70 degrees and sunny, definitely not a usual Jan. 31 in Kansas.................then the wind nearly blew me over and I knew I must still be in Kansas. :) A remarkable reprieve from winter weather, and I enjoyed it immensely. Tomorrow will be back in the 40's, still warm for Kansas this time of year.

Today I stayed off of the cardio so I would be well rested for the beginning of our little contest that starts tomorrow but I did go to the gym and get a workout in. I also finally registered for my next half which will also be on February 15th. I am planning on putting a lot of miles in this week and at the beginning of next week and then tapering for a few days getting ready for it. I want to be strong for the race but even if I am not, it has a 4 hour time limit and I know I can blow that out of the water so I should be good to go.

SamSam - I know what you mean about the temp. It was 70 in KC and it was an off day! Still warm enough to get outside today though.

I am just starting C25K and this will be my first non-TM session.

Here we go!

Hi everyone!

I fell off the workout wagon the past few days bigtime. My DD (3) got croup and a nasty virus so no trip to the gym for me Friday and then I came down with it the following morning. I have been feeling achy and just in no shape to walk/run. I am hoping to get in at least two miles on the TM today.

The C25k has been going pretty well for me though. Superbowl is here in Tampa today, and the stadium literally 5 minutes from my house. So I better get moving, the traffics going to be a mess.

What is the longest you all have put in on the treadmill? I am finding 45 minutes to be my absolute limit right now.

Bryan :wave2:- You will rock that Half, I'm sure of it !!:cool1:

Jeff: I thought I was going to do more miles than you today, guess not. You did 10 and I did 8.20. That's cool though.

Here is my first horrible photo from ASI in 7 Half Marathon!! I wrote and told them that I was not happy. Guess I will have someone take a photo of me with my camera at the same time the photographer does.

Hi, gang!! Here I am, trying to catch up!

It's cold where I am, but I am bound and determined to get out and get moving! I think I better go soon, before the rain starts up again. I didn't bring a rain jacket.

Terri, I hear ya about the gym memberships...I hardly use mine in the nicer weather months, though I should be getting in there to do weight training. Hoping to use mine better this year. I think mine's only like $20-$30 a month though.

yay for the miles/minutes game!!:cool1:

It's 35ish here today, with soon and it feels WONDERFUL! A veritable heat wave.

Tracy Cute avatar, new--n'est-ce pas? As for your ING picture--I think the ultraglow/shine is just your wonderfulness coming through!

Zalansky I have actually done 10 miles on the TM--1-1/2 hours. I know others here have done 20! :crazy2:

Didn't run outside today--probably should have given the weather, but I am trying to maintain a specific pace and there are still too many snowy/slushy roads. Did get in 6.1 at the gym.

Time to figure out some good munchies for the game.

Maura you should have come with me today!!!! I ran at Stony, waited till 12 to do it with the temps at 37* and sunny. It was cooler there than at home and the breeze around the lake is always fun :scared: But the 6 miles loop around the lake is kept cleared. Only a small layer of snow in parts due to the wind blowing. I know I need to try Kensington and plan on trying it when the temps warm up.

So today I managed to get in 8.5 miles with an avg 15:08 pace. Next weekend looks like it might hit mid-30's (fri) and up for Sat. :cool1: I hope this cold snap ends soon. Doesn't Mother Nature know I have the Princess in a few weeks?!?!?!? :upsidedow

Hope warmer temps and sunshine was abundant for everyone's training today!!!

Were you on the LOST island, and right as the photographer pressed the shutter, the island leaped in a time ? That would explain the bright shot!

A nice day here. Mid-60's w/only a 5 mph breeze. i was able to get out on my bike & did 40 miles in 2:22. Not real fast, but hopefully that will come with more time in the saddle.

What is the longest you all have put in on the treadmill? I am finding 45 minutes to be my absolute limit right now.

I like to use what psychologists call the Premack Principle. Essentially, you can increase the likelihood of some low-probability behavior if you make some high-probability behavior contingent on the first, aversive behavior. So, for example, I'll get myself to a really good part of a Janet Evanovich novel, and the put it down and forbid myself from seeing what happens next until I finish my LR on the treadmill.

Though actually, I find the reverse principle even more effective -- find something even less desirable than running indoors like a rat on an exercise wheel, and allow myself to avoid that task for a while by running. My longest treadmill runs get done when I have deadlines looming with papers to write or papers to grade. If I ever had to grade a paper I wrote, I'd be able to run for days! :lmao:

I agree, though, that having a good dvd with lots of explosions is also essential if you are going to do an hour and a half or more.

Believe it or not, last year, while at the gym, I actually did a half marathon on the treadmill. It was my first time going for the distance and it was wet and cold outside so I figured why not? I haven't done that since then either.:confused3

Good Morning WISH team....

I've been on the treadmill for 4.5 hours on more than one occasion. I hate it, but sometimes just don't have a choice. TV, Radio, anything I try and it's still boring.

Got in a 4 miler yesterday on the treadmill because our roads are still icy/slush so going outside is still not happening. I may try tonight when I get home. Just have to take it slow.

Have a great Monday everyone!

Hi, fellow WISHers!:wave2: I'm somewhat new to the WISH boards, but have been on the DIS for a while.
The DH and I are working on getting ourselves into running/jogging, and hope to run in our first 5K in the next month or so. Right now we are working out in a gym, walking on the treadmill. When it gets warmer and the time changes back we'll probably head back to a local park where it's much less boring!
Anyway...it seems that I'm definitely a beginner compared to most of you! I hope that I can get some advice and tips from all you experienced runners. I can't wait to do our first 5K, with my big goal being to run in one of the Disney races!
As I said, I'm still new to this WISH thing, and I'm so excited about it. If I've left out any important info let me know! I'm looking forward to being a part of one of the teams and logging my time/distance with everyone!

Yeah - who said Punxsutawney Phil had the last word on this! I'll go with General Lee myself.

I got my first real run since the Donald done yesterday - a nice and easy three miles. The weather cooperated, since it was 50 degrees, but the streets and sidewalks were still icy which made for some treacherous footing. It was hard but good, and I was so happy and grateful to get out there!

We're supposed to get more snow tonight, so it may be back to the gym for the rest of my workouts. Oh well, it was nice to get some spring-like weather for 2 days!

I think New York's groundhog, Staten island Chuck, wins this year. Not only did he not see his shadow, but he also bit Mayor Michael Bloomberg while he was out.

So as of now, it seems two out of three groundhogs agree -- no shadow and an early spring. :cool1:

Tell me about your gizmos. After reading Marathons for Mortals I am intrigued by the speed distance monitor Jenny mentions. Further googling makes me think it's a wristwatch that receives a signal from a thingy laced into the runner's shoe. Who has one they really like? Do you tell it your stride length or does it simply KNOW?

I've used a Forerunner in the past, but have been disappointed by lost signals and the outside-only problem.

I have tied the purchase of something like this to finishing C25K. I don't know what kind of reward I will plot for the half marathon!!! Maybe a new nano.

Thanks for insights,

Missy - Welcome!!! Many of us started here adn many of us started as beginners. I signed up for teh full when I had not run further than the mail box fro 16 years. OK, tiem for my annual speech. ;)

Beginners/New to WISH Team- Welcome!!!! Please tell us a bit about youreslves and your training. The more we know, the more we can help. We all have soemthing to learn from each other. Please tell us a bit about youreslves and your training. The more we know, the more we can help.

I started C25K last week morning. I'm using Robert Ullrey's podcasts. We have a fitness center at work. I used the treadmill - outside is icky right now. The anticipation of the first 1 minute run was surprising. I made it through and was pleased that I didn't feel as though I was going to die!

My high weight was in the 240s. That was around 1999. I lost some weight - 20 or 30 pounds - in 1999 on the eat less/move more plan. In 2001 I heard about a long distance bike ride from co-workers. It sounded like a fun challenge and I started preparing for it. I was in the 180s by the start of the bike ride. It was 250 miles and my biggest fear was being swept at the end of the day! I made it. It was awesome.

My weight remained steady. While I get some exercise I want to get fitter. My girlfriend and I have been looking for motivation and a plan. I suggested a BIG target and told the story of my ride preparation. She chose running a 5k.

One thing lead to another and now we plan to participate in a local 5K in late April. Of course this enthusiasm has me excited about the possibility of running in the WDW half marathon January 2010.

I haven't been to WDW since 2005 and coming back for that purpose would be amazing!

Success story links would be appreciated!

Ronda - Welcome!!! I had not run in 16 years when dh and I started to train for our first full marathon. Can't say I really recommend going from 0 to full in 10 months, but it's do-able. We use MArathoning for Mortals (MfM) and started with teh walk/run the half program. 4min walk/1 min run. OMG, thos e1 minute runs were soooo long to start with. Then, we got to wher it was 4 run/1 walk. How did those 1 minutes get so short? ;) We made it, though. I definietly think you could do the half in 2010 if yo reallyput your mind to it and find a good, gradual plan. Here's a pesudo short bio on me.

2 big things happened in Feb/March of 2004. Went on a land/sea vacation adn suffered great WDW withdrawl afterward and my dad was told he needed heart by-pass surgery one week after sepndign a day woith him at Epcot. My dad was always in great shape. Had diabetes (runs in the family), but treated mostly with diet and exercise, has never used insulin. That was a big scare, as dad always ate better than I did and was exercsing more. Anyway, I had started to exercise just before the trip adn that made me stay at it.

Came to DIS to ask 1 question about DVC. hence, teh unpronounceable name. just came up with it on the fly. So, I found teh DVC boards and tehn I found WISH. Dh adn I both ran in HS. He had always wanted to run a amrathon. I swore off running. Then, I found WISH and found out there is a marathon in WDW. Became a WISH team member in 2005, after ebign inspired by the original team. I now have 4 full marathons, 8 half marathons, and 2 tri's under my belt! And I owe it all to WISH!

I had a tough run this morning...

A local running store is trying to start up a running group for women. I'll normally try to go on Sunday, which I heard has had a pretty good turnout, but DH has taken over Sundays temporarily training for his first full so I'm at home with the kids. They added Tuesday mornings and I went today. Let's just say it was only me, the girl who started this up and another woman who runs twenty miles on the weekend. Crud. They are running at Kennesaw Mountain which I've only run once before with DH and never went back - it is like all major hills. I don't know how DH runs out there. Sure enough, this trail we did today was basically a vertical climb the entire first half. I had to walk alot of it and I felt like a total dork. I ended up doing three miles and didn't go the next three. I really need to go Sundays cause I was told there is more of a variety of abilities. I guess I did OK for the most part, they were encouraging, but obviously I need more hill work. :lmao:

Hope everyone else has a better run today. :thumbsup2

Good morning, WISHers!
I'm happy to report that the DH and I made it to the gym last night. It was actually a good workout for both of us. I started out just walking, but decided that I wanted to get started back on my "Beginning Runner's Handbook" program. The DH and I actually started it back in October, but I started having some pain in my side, so we stopped for a while. Now I'm determined to get started again...I was a little worried about running on the treadmill in fear that I would sound like a pack of clydesdales in a musical...but I went for it anyway. So...the plan called for 1 minute of running followed by 2 minutes of walking-12 times. I'm so happy that I was able to complete it, and now I'm so excited about tomorrow's training!!

I've been posting a little on my team thread; now it's time to start trying to keep up with the big one! :thumbsup2

UGAFan0829, that R1/W2 ratio is the same one I use -- I love it. I've found that if I run for much longer than a minute, my walking really slows down and my overall pace doesn't improve much.

All I have to say today is -- OUCH OUCH OUCH. I did a new class at the Y yesterday called "cross training." It should have been called "torture more appropriate for 20 year olds than a 42 year old woman with a tendency toward injury." I survived, at least. Today is a rest day for me!

So...the plan called for 1 minute of running followed by 2 minutes of walking-12 times. I'm so happy that I was able to complete it, and now I'm so excited about tomorrow's training!!

I used that book twice to start running. First as a newbie and then again after some surgery. It is an awesome program. Good luck!

That's good to know. I'm really liking it so far. It's good to know that someone else here has used it as well.

Not being nosey, but I think I noticed in one of your other posts that you ran Kennesaw Mountain. Do you live in the Kennesaw area? If so, I'm not too awful far from you!

Yes. :wave2:

Big Peach is trying to get a women's group going. I'll PM you the schedule if you're interested. I'm not too big of a fan of running out there, but this area is in need of a women's group bad.

Hey Jeff, DH was on some random running blog the other day and on the bottom it said photos from Jeff Da Runner. You're everywhere! :thumbsup2

Shan,

What happend was, I was reading that gals blog. She lifted a picture I posted of my Dopey medals from my DR posts, and she used it in her blog. While I don't mind people using my pictures, I told her at least give me photo credit. So she did.

She did go on to say I was her running hero, but I don't know about that status she bestowed upon me. :rotfl2:

Hi everyone, I got more XT today. Was a foot of snow to be removed, so I did what I could. Then I came in and did 15 min on Wii Fit. This is a fun toy. I did my first ever Yoga on it for a couple of minutes and think I actually learned something.

Anybody out there have a Gazelle? No, not the animal. :rotfl: The piece of exercise equipment. Mine is saying STOP on the left hand side even when it's moving. I've changed the batteries and done everything I know to do. Any suggestions?

It is nice because it is a non impact workout. Although, it hasn't been used much as of late. :guilty: I got on it tonight to do 3 miles, but I've messed around with it for so long, that now it's time to go to bed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :grouphug:

Hey team!

I got 4 miles in on the treadmill last night. Was tired and had no interest, but once I got running it felt good.

No Disneyland for me this year so I'm kind of sad, but what can you do right? Hopefully my wife and I can take our 10 year Anniversary trip in October. We'll see.

Have a great day!

Morning everyone!

Hit the gym last night - got in 2 miles on the TM, 1.2 on eliptical then spent 20 min on core work. Felt pretty good overall even though had little interest in going to start. Think most of us northerners are suffering from winter blahs.

Tonight is bike time! Nice long ride on the trainer before dinner.

Keep up the good work and have a great day!!

The southerners are, too :) BRRR -- temps in the teens this morning. I'll be riding the recumbent bike today. I have put it to paper, so now I have to do it!

Hi Everyone!

It's frigid out here in Mass. I did 5k in 25 min on an indoor track; it's just too cold do anything outside. I don't see how track runners do it!

LOL, oh yeah, that was something else, not the other girls blog, but someone else.

http://the-zamoras.blogspot.com/

The first girl, used my medal photo on her blog (without asking permission from me). So I told her, at least put a caption that the photo was courtesy of Jeff Da Runner. She apologized and then added the credit. It's all good now. :rotfl2:

The second girl saw some pictures I posted on Facebook. They are actually Chris' ASI race photos, but I found these crazy pictures. She's an online writer, and asked me to send the photos to her. They're now published in cyberspace. They're not at the finish line, probably the half way point of the marathon.

Here's the link everyone.

As for me: 8 1/4 miles, 1 hour 12 minutes. Good run today.

I just looked at the cell phone pic. I don't think she was in the race at all. She is wearing a lanyard. That makes her an even bigger "no no" crossing the runners path. :scared:

Ya, I noticed her lanyard, too.

OK, so I'm happy today the weather is warming up and we're gonna have a nice weekend, but darn if I'm not sick! :crazy2: I just got back form a 3 miler that was torture. I feel totally zapped. And to think I had planned on 7 miles today... :faint:

I hope everyone else gets warmer weather this weekend, too! :beach:

Loved the Video.

Not a good week for me. I was just unmotivated. Did do my new Pilates video one night in my hotel room, but...

Did a little over 4.5 miles today with an avg time of 11:45 not bad!

Next week is the Breast Cancer Half in Jacksonville. Anyone else going to be there?

I was able to get out for a 4 mile jaunt. Weather was *almost* not cold LOL Should be good tomorrow and Monday, too. I'll see how my legs feel in the moring.

I'm so inspired by all of you folks. I can't wait until I can say "oh, I only ran 8 miles this morning" and have it not be a big deal.
