This is my first Wish Journal. In fact...I really have no idea what I am doing. I was not even sure where to PUT this!

It is sort of a pre-trip report. More on that in a sec...

But it is more of a journal...so I put it here with the WISH Journals.

But to understand why I am here...I must take you back a few months. And to take you back, well, you would need to have some clue who is writing all of this stuff!

I am Maroo! Short...well, long...for Mary! I am single...30 something years old...and I have a considerable amount of work to do before I can consider myself "healthy!"

I found the Disboards when I was helping my good friends plan a trip to Disney World. We ended up going on a wonderful Wish Trip. Not W.I.S.H...but Wish...Confused? Well, I was too. In fact, in researching that trip, I thought this board was about Wish trips. :sad2: Our trip was a Make A Wish trip. :cool1:

My dear friend, Lauren - daughter of my dear friend, Lisa - was granted a trip with the Make A Wish Foundation (MAW). MAW grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses. We took that trip in October. To Disney, of course!

You can read all about it here:

The Rainbow Wish Trip Report (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1980494)

In fact...to understand the "rainbow" part of this deal, you would need to start there!

So, I will assume you read it...What, you didn't read it?!?!?! :confused3 I understand! I will recap some of that trip on this journal...at some point...so if you don't have time to read all of that, I understand! You can still join me on this journey.

So...where are we going?

Well...for one thing...I am GOING to lose some weight! YES! I am going to lose some weight! ::yes::

I know some people go into detail about where they are now in this area...but, uh, I am shy about that...so, maybe later! :) Suffice to say...I have plenty I need to lose! :faint:

My second goal...is to get healthy! To exercise more! And I have discovered something about myself through this process of planning a Wish trip...I LOVE DISNEY!!!

And I will do almost anything to get back to Disney World.

I proved this point when I asked my friend, Lisa, to join me on a trip back to Disney. Not for the great food...although, I do plan to eat while I am there! And not for the wonderful rides...or characters...or magical moments or anything else that represents Disney....

I asked my friend to join me in a race. That is right, my friend! I can barely jog around the block...and I am committed to a race!

Tower of Terror...to be exact. October 24, 2009!

And then...the Half-Marathon in 2010!!

So...that is where I am going...want to join me on this journey?

Mary,
Congratulations for making the decision that this is what you want to do.It is possible to do anything if we put our minds to it.
Last year I was contemplating the 1/2 at this time and the people here on this board convinced me I could do the full- well I did the full this year and what an experience. You will have a blast next year, I am doing the 1/2 too.

The whole process is a building process with good days and bad days but you will succeed.

Thanks for checking out my journal the support really helps me too.I am starting to focus on weight loss too so we can support each other.

Have a great day!

Yeah!!!! :)

I am so glad that you have joined me for this leg of my journey!

So sad to see your TR end, but so happy I can keep up with you here!!

Aww...thanks for subbing here! :)

I will try to update regularly about Lauren and family, too. In fact...we might have Lisa join us!! As a DISer! :) Wouldn't that be cool!

Thanks, Linda! Aw man, I can't imagine doing the full. Plus, it would take me FOREVER...:lmao: I don't want to use that much DISNEY time! :)

I will definitely check out your journal, too! I am pretty sure I have already subscribed, but I need to make sure! Sometimes I hit the wrong button!!!

Hello, everyone! :)

It feels a little strange to be on this part of the Disboards!...I might not have enough of a clue to actually start a WISH journal!

But here goes nothing!

So...first step for me, I think, is the weight loss...Because walking or jogging around with all of this extra weight can't be good for my knees! Or any other part of me, for that matter!!! :)

I have joined Weight Watchers online. I don't really have time or really enjoy meetings. And I like the idea of paying just $16ish a month for this project! I have done well, so far, doing my weekly weigh ins at home and putting it on my online journal. I have ready access to the internet at home, work and even my phone (which I LOVE!), so I am doing well on tracking exactly what I am eating. The simple act of writing it down seems to help me, honestly.

I started on December 26th. This was not a New Years Resolution, as I believe those were made to be broken, but more of a paradigm shift. I got on the scale the day after Christmas and thought I was going to die right there! The most I had weighed...EVER...And it crossed a number I never thought I would cross...but ANYWAY....

So, I immediately lost about 3 pounds...and then immediately put it back on. Not sure how that happened? Seriously...I was even on plan!

Aside from that yo-yo moment, I have been losing weight ever since!

I have lost, as of yesterday, 9.5 pounds!

I have also been exercising...but more on that later!

This...is step one of the plan! LOSE WEIGHT!!

Any comments, suggestions, or random thoughts are welcome!!!!!! :)

One thing that my doctor has told me, is to not weigh yourself everyday. When you do that you are only seeing the amount of water in your body fluctuating. He said do it once a week and in the morning before you eat or drink anything. That will give you the best idea on how much you are losing. There is a veggie pizza that me and my family make all the time, it is a cold thing but really good. Let me know if you want the recipe! I'm sure you are going to do great!

Yah!!!!!! Another story by Maroo to follow! And one that I can more fit into! I found out that my DH really wants to run in next year's half-marathon, so that he doesn't find some other cutie chick to do it with...I've volunteered! Sheeesh! Why do I get into these things???? So, I'll be following along and adding my own journal soon!

Mary- 9.5 lbs you go girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks like we will have a good group from here for the 1/2 next year!

It is so true about the New Year resolution- you can't do something like this just because of the date you need to have your head in the game.

Keep posting!

:) Sure, I would love the recipe! :)

Weight Watchers only allows you to log your weight once a week, too! My weigh in day is Tuesday. Sometimes I want to do this :badpc: when I have to log it! :rotfl:

Thank you so much for following along! :) Any hints, comments, recipes greatly appreciated!! :)

Aw, I am so glad I have some folks crossing over to this journal! :) It will be different from the rollercoaster TR - I am not nearly as cute! :rotfl2: ...but, I am sure it will have some ups and downs too! And I will put in regular updates on Lauren and family, too! :)

Lauren's mom, Lisa is going to be joining me in October, but I don't know of anyone that will be joining me in January! I will probably go with Team in Training, unless we can come up with a good fundraiser for GKTW on the DIS...there has been talk about that! :)

Does your husband run? Are you planning on walking or jogging or running?

Hi Mar!

I was so happy to hear from you yesterday! It is so funny, I also started an exercise program last week (Yes, before I knew you were going to :)), but mine is more to tone up than lose weight, although, I will start that facet in a couple more months when the weather warms up some. It is just too icy to safely walk or jog right now.

Anyway, I'm using weights on my marshmallow-y arms and lats. I just so totally HATE! that my flab hangs over my bra!!!!! Ugh! Geez Louise, I hope only gals are reading this! :lmao:

This too is part of my ultimate plan to get back to the House of Mouse, but be able to wear a T-shirt without being grossed out by my own out-of-shape-ness. I joined up with FitDay and am logging my food too. The most interesting thing is that it tells you if you are getting enough vitamins and minerals with what you eat also. Vitamins are too expensive to buy here, so I have to eat what I need.

Anyway, don't want to hijack your thread here. Just tellin' you, I'll be here with you. :grouphug:

Your Friend,

Liesa

Hi Mary,
Thanks for inviting me to your journal - I posted on my Procrastination Half trip report about those hills -rest assured YOU CAN DO IT!

I'd also like to invite you to the Peep thread on WISH
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1863804

I'm a bad peep and havent been posting there in a year - but I was there when it all started thanks to Utahmama/ie Wendy - she is a wonderful, vivacious, person, very inspiring - lots of peeps post recipes (some not so weight friendly LOL) but they weigh in every Friday - and Wendy keeps tracks of all the losers - and everyone cheers everyone else on!!

so after looking at the wedding pics, and my Half pics, I truly have to start anew - I want to be at least 20# lighter for the 2010 Half!! Can you imagine? I cant, not really... but I know that as heavy as I am, I can still finish that Half if I believe, and if I want it!

I havent read the MAW trip - but I probably have read parts - or if you have posted on the DISabilty forum, I am a reader of that board as well!! Mainly due to my ds, 24 yrs old, he's hard of hearing, so I got involved in a lot of special needs work in the last 24 years! Since we went to Disney, I had to know about closed/ or reflective captioning (dh and ds arent deaf, just hard of hearing)

BTW - in case you havent picked up on it, I"m really chatty!

Right now I"m at a library, I have 2 hours of internet time - and then I wander around waiting for my ds to finish treatment at a hospital (since its 50 min from home, I've been creatively finding time to waste!)

so, thanks for having me!!

:cheer2:

Yeah! Liesa! Joining me from half-way across the world! :) Feel FREE to hijack any time you want! In fact, if you want to do your journal stuff right here, feel free! The more the merrier! Then I won't feel like I am just talking to myself! :lmao:

I am so excited that you are starting something, too!! :) I have no idea what the FitDay thing is? Is that a website? That vitamin deal will be good if you can't buy them where you are. Can you recieve shipments of stuff? Or do they have mail in your country? :lmao: Like vitamins and peanut butter? I bet you can't buy that, either!

Now, you know about cold, don't you! I will pass you some coffee. :coffee: Isn't it, like, Tundra cold over there? What is the temp today (in F!)?

My treadmill died. And it was too cold for me to walk outside. Now, ask me how cold it was? You are going to cry. Or die laughing. It was 40. 40 degrees. And it was too cold. I am SUCH A WIMP!!! :guilty:

I really do need to work on that. And have been inspired by all of the people on this board that walk when it is 6 freaking degrees outside! :sad2: You people! :rotfl2:

But, I also have a sore throat. And don't need to be sick, because I have a big weekend coming up. Lauren, my 15-year-old friend, pictured below, has a church retreat this weekend. I will be her assistant from today (Friday) at 4 till Sunday afternoon. :scared1: For those of you that don't know Lauren - she has cerebral palsy, uses a power wheelchair, can't sit, stand or walk on her own, and needs help with just about everything. She is also perfectly "normal" from the neck up. So she needs help with homework (10th grade stinks!!) and other stuff that every teenager does! She is a delight to be around!

You can read all about our adventures in Disney World in our TR below, if you want more info...but I will try to add tidbits every now and then here on this journal!

So...back to the journal stuff...

I did get to walk about 30 min last night before my treadmill died. I have been staying on plan with WW for the past several days. But, today, I just feel horrible. Sore throat. Low grade fever. And I don't know about you guys...but I tend to toss the diet out the window when I am sick. I want comfort food. Like real food. Anyone know where I am coming from here?

So, I am trying to stay on plan. I probably won't be around here much this weekend...Well, I do have that iPhone...so I will have to test that out!

Hopefully I can stay on plan, even with the retreat food!

I need a treadmill too!! But I have decided and took you as an inspiration to start a diet and workout regimend. I am going to start small by just eating healthier and doing at home workouts. Those videos may seem cheesy but some of those 12 minute cardio workouts will get me sweating like no other and goodness do I feel it the next day too! So I figure get about 2 or 3 of those and do them sporatically (sp?) during the day and I will be fine. With not working right now and going to school online oh and being my nephews babysitter a few days a week it's hard to get out. Oh and not counting the 10 inches of ice and snow outside..lol...So I am joining in and going to be doing this with you! I am going tonight to get my workout videos, I will let you know if I find any good ones if you are interested! I am so excited about this!

Wow! :) Look at you, getting all inspired! :)

:faint: I inspired you?!?! Oh goodness...no pressure! :) lol

Let me know how those videos go!

Think I could get one on iTunes? :rotfl: Ok...hilarious! :lmao: Thinking about trying to do a workout holding that 2.5 inch screen! I would fall on my face!! :rotfl2:

It is a VERY long story...but I am trying to figure out which of three gyms I should be a member of...I have two friends I work out with...and they are members of two separate gyms. Then there is the gym where I work...?! Decisions!

So I decided to join none of them! And just pay as I go...which probably is not a good plan...especially since my treadmill died! But we will see!

So far, so good! :)

Thanks for joining me!! And feel complete freedom to journal here, too!! The more the merrier!! :)

:cheer2:

I loved your quick, impromptu, very late TR! I have to admit, I thought you had mistyped when you said half in 08...:rotfl:

I love that you did it! And didn't get swept! You had me on pins and needles because at some point in the beginning you said you didn't get a medal...and that made me think you got swept! It was a nail biter. And I am glad I didn't have to wait forever to get to the end! You are one fast trip writer! It took me 4 months to write mine...and I was on here about every day... :P

Wow! Special needs work...we do have a lot in common! I don't post as much on the disabilities side, because I am buried in there on the Wish Trippers thread and I spend lots of time on there. But I do try to drop in the disabilities section every now and then! :) And I usually pipe in on just about anything!

You can DEFINITELY lose 20 pounds!! By Jan! :) You can do it!! :) :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I would think really getting into the training...and just drinking a lot of water, would get you close! :)

I just have to keep myself from eating MORE as I am exercising.

Feel free to post here! And I will follow your journal, too!!! :)

Wouldn't you work one be free? There is a gym here in town that don't cost too much but with not working I gotta save every penny. But as soon as I can find a job I will be signing up!

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Free?!?! Goodness no!

This one here is about 50 a month. They are PROUD of it! But they have a nice, nice indoor pool. One I crave to swim in! With beautiful sky lights!

And my friend is a member of a 20/month one...but it just had treadmills and such...not much. You even have to bring your own towel to take a shower.

The 3rd one is about 40...

I decided I could walk on my treadmill when the weather is bad...walk outside when it is nice. I will ride my bike once a week with my friend, Lisa...and then I can pay just $5 if I want to swim...as long as I am with my friend that is a member.

So, I could do it all...for less. If I can stay motivated. I mean...when I stay motivated! ::yes::

Do you have a Bally's Fitness by you ?

I'm not sure when this expires, but you can get 30 days free at Bally's if you sign up thru Discovery Health

I do really well for 2 weeks, then, I just give up!

Taking my son to the hospital M-F from 9-3 (and its a 45 min drive) is such an easy excuse. I'm hoping to motivate (kick myself into gear! into reality!) myself into doing Mall walking next week! I know I'll be glad if I do!

Then eating. seriously. I know what to do - but I love the drive thru - hamburgers.. or chinese buffet (ok so I ate there yesterday, but I didnt enjoy it.. every time I eat there I think, this is so not worth the calories.. yet 2 or 3 times I year I still eat there!)

I think it is great that gyms are offering a pay as you go now.You figure the economy the way it is if they did not do something like that they would lose tons of business.Everyone knows what it is like to pay for the gym and then stop going but the monthly payment is there.I was actually going to check with my old gym to do Spinning(pay as you go).I don't know if they do it but it would be great.

Where are you from? I was laughing about being cold at 40 degrees! I would be in shorts- no lie!

;) Just checking in to say hi. Good news! It's been above freezing here for almost a week, and the ice is melting fast! This is absolutely incredible and unheard of for this area! usually it is about -20 F from the end of Nov. until the end of Feb., but not this year. :confused3 But that's good for me, because I really need to get out there and start walking! I'm not sure I'll ever "do" a marathon, or even a half marathon, my back is so bad, but at least I can try to keep it from getting worse!

Well, yes and no about that peanut butter.... We can get small jars of it, but it is made in China, and I'm a little leery of using it. With all the scares about Chinese products these days, I'm just not sure. I'm sure that they don't check quality standards AT ALL here. The things I miss here the most are: good coffee (they only drink tea here), easy access to new movies, or any movies for that matter on DVD, reliable utilities, my family, and quilting fabric. ;)

Well, time for my little "workout". Oh, by the way, FitDay is a website. Just google it. It's free and good.

No...never heard of Bally's...? :confused3

I am from Jackson, Mississippi...I don't think we have those down here?

You have to take your son to the hospital every day? Does he work there? He isn't sick, is he?

I have been able to try to do "drive thru" meals a little better. I am on the Weight Watchers online and I have an iPhone now...so I can actually check the restaurant points and make pretty good decisions about what to eat there. If you play your cards right, you can eat fairly healthy! :)

But...I do have to stay WAY away from the Chinese food buffet!

Ah! An Ipod dock? I wonder if it would hold an iPhone? That sounds AWESOME! I really may have to get another treadmill. I hate to do that...because it is so expensive...and I am really trying to save up for the Disney trips!! :)

I am from Mississippi...and it is a "wet" cold down here... I can almost handle the cold up north....well, sort of...not really!

I am sick as a dog! Seriously...quite sick...more on that in a min...

-20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh.

That is crazy. I think God would have to speak out loud before I could move there! (Not really...I would follow Him wherever He told me to go!)

I am planning to WALK the half...it will take me forever! But it will keep me from hurting my back and all of the training should help my back, hopefully!! :) And my knees, etc. It will help to just lose some weight!

Yeah...it sounds like we should avoid the peanut butter in the USA, too!!!!

I guess they don't deliver Netflix over there, huh! :rotfl2:

Thanks so much for posting and keeping in touch! :)

Maroo - I'm impressed with you for choosing to do a 1/2 marathon, I'm so inspired by people who can run that far. Maybe someday I'll get up enough guts to join you and others in a run.

Oh my...I won't be running!! I am planning to speed walk. I will still burn a TON of calories...but I don't see myself ever running anywhere!

Great Job Mary!!!:cheer2:

:cheer2: GO MARY GO!!!:cheer2:

:cheer2: GO MARY GO!!!:cheer2:

Thanks, Mindy!!! :)

Hi Mary

Subbing to your thread and looking forward to the ride. :beach: Keep up the good work!!! :joker:

So...it has been a very stressful weekend. For several reasons.

First...a sort of funny story...but part of my stress...

This is Muffin. She is my baby! For those of you guys that have no children...especially my other single friends out there... you might get what I say here...This is my child! Ya know what I am saying?

http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq324/mblaine/photo-1-1.jpg

Isn't she cute?

http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq324/mblaine/photo-2.jpg

Muffin was staying at Lauren's house the other night while I took Lauren to a church function. When we got back, we couldn't find Muffin! :confused3 We could hear her barking, crying, but we could not find her! Finally, one of Lauren's friends thought she heard the barking coming from the toilet...

opened the lid...

and about had a heart attack!

Because Muffin was IN THE TOILET! :rotfl:

How in the world she managed to get in the toilet AND shut the lid on herself, I have no idea!

Anyway...

I did have Lauren all weekend. And I am sick. Here was the schedule.

Friday: Got off of work at 3:00. Ran home. Got packed, grabbed Muffin and drove to Lauren's. I got there right after her bus got there. Fed Lauren some supper. She worked on homework for an hour or so. Then we loaded up in the van and drove to the church. We stayed there until after 10:00 PM!! I was exhausted! But, we had to go to the store to get some snacks for the students. Then back to her house. Then the whole Muffin thing happened. They had some Bible Study time. We finally got everyone in bed around 1:00 AM.

Saturday: Lauren had to be ready before 8:00. Which means our day started at 5:30. Got her showered, dressed, hair, makeup, etc, etc done. We all ate breakfast. I took a nap. About 30 minutes. Then we had to leave for the church again. While she was doing church activities, I went and took another nap! Our church has a few really comfy couches! But just for a little while. Then lunch (which was pizza! Yummy...but...well, I ate Pizza! And I didn't have enough points for all of that!) then recreation, then more meetings. Then dinner (lasagna! HELLO, people! Bad, bad, Mary!!) We finally got home Saturday night at 10:30. Lauren was exhausted, so she was ready for bed pretty quickly. Got her in bed and then I crashed at 11:00 pm.

I woke up this morning and felt HORRIBLE! The original plan was for me to get her ready and take her to the church and then pack and go back to my house this afternoon.

But, I couldn't do it. I have fever. And I must have looked horrible...because Lauren said, "You are not taking me anywhere! MOM!!" Her Mom came, and bless her heart, got her ready for church...then passed her to me for a little while while she got ready to go (fast!) and then she took Lauren to the church. I was just out of reserve.

So...now I am at home. I have taken quite a bit of medicine...and hopefully will be asleep by the time the big game starts!!

Good news, I guess, is that I won't be eating junk at any Super Bowl parties tonight. But I ate my crummy stuff on Saturday! I just need to bring my own food to those things. But I just don't have the extra time to fix anything because it is all I can do to get Lauren's food, my food and feed both of us during the short times we have to eat. Ya know?

Anyway...

I am definitely not doing any exercise today. What do you guys think about working out when you are sick? My general feeling is that if I have fever, I should take it easy? What is your philosophy on that?

Well...sort of a downer post...but you will get it all from me on this thread! Have a good day, peeps!! :)

Maroo :grouphug: and some pixiedust: get healthy dust!

Yes, you need to recover before you exercise! Move when you can, and many people end up losing quite a bit of water weight when sick... :rolleyes1 Drink WATER - drink chicken broth - eat a few crackers, but mostly stick to liquids!

I finished your trip report... :goodvibes Lauren sounds like she could teach! I was involved with the Church Youth Group when my 2 boys were teenagers - those sleepovers were exhausting...

you're poor baby - stuck in the toilet!! :scared1: Some things you'll never know!! (and I do understand about the love connection with our furbabies!)

Have you been to Dottie's Weight Loss Zone? Its all things Weight Watchers
http://www.dwlz.com/ you can spend hours wandering around her site - very inspirational too! I noticed on the main WISH page there is a post about weight watchers - I do believe you will get out of it what you put into it!

http://www.ballyfitness.com/ but you are right, no Bally's in Mississippi - 29 in IL - I'm in the cold frozen Chicagoland area - and wondering why about now!!

:cheer2: Great Attitude - you may have made some high calorie choices then, but not now - the trick is to find balance, and if you have to - pack your own! ALWAYS carry water - fill up on water, and nibble on the higher caloric stuffs!!

My son, 20, is having some challenges - he was in the hospital for 5 days, not really sure what happened, lots of tests - all negative - sensitive subject - we are now going for 2nd opinions and he is getting some OT/PT type therapy treatments... Life throws curveballs - I get to plan a trip to Disney - as well as having many many miracles and Faith affirming occurances in the midst of our crisis!

I truly talk too much!

Do hope you're feeling better, Mar! ;) I was all set to start some walking yesterday, as the mud is slowly drying out, but I woke up to snow again today, so there went that plan. Now, I will have to go to drastic measures... I will have to get out my jumprope and take a swing at that. :lmao: I figure it won't be so bad if I put on my Disney music. :cool1:
It'll drive DH nuts, but hey, it's not about him.

By the way, he informed me last night that I won't see a difference in my marshmallow arms, if I don't burn more calories (that translates into "lose a little weight, honey", btw) at the same time. Of course, I know he's right, so I just MUST add the aerobics component to my toning exercices. I only have 6 weeks until I must don a swimsuit in Dubai, so my procrastinating window is now over. :thumbsup2

Take care! btw, we have the cold brewing here too. The neighbor girl came over with one raging case of bronchitis, and very nicely shared it with us. :sad2:

Weigh In Day!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I don't know why in the world I chose to use so many exclamation points on that...because there is nothing good about it today! And the cheerleaders! Geez! :sad2:

I gained 1 pound.

Honestly...I am glad it was only a pound.

I was not able to walk at all from Thursday til today because I have been sick. I do feel a little better today. Actually, I don't feel "good"...but I am not as congested, so that is good!

I made crummy food choices this weekend and didn't walk...so...this is what I get!

But...I am back on the wagon (and was even yesterday) for my food choices and hope to work out again starting tomorrow. I need to avoid getting bronchitis, if I can...so I have been taking it easy!

I do have another long weekend coming up. Lauren has another church retreat...this time the Youth Choir. And I will have her Friday through Sunday again. But I am hoping that I will have some down time there and the weather will be nice, so I can walk at the church some!

I am going to get some new tennis shoes today! Mine are getting so worn out that the balls of my feet are hurting. So I will hopefully make some progress after that.

Too bad I didn't lose weight with this illness! This was one of those "feed the fever" sort of illnesses. Not sick to my stomach...just sinus infection sick.

I think Lauren will end up doing some sort of counseling or law as a career. She has issues, because if she works too much, she will lose her Medicaid benefits...so she either has to get a job where she has excellent coverage...or get a part time job!

I have visited DWLZ...in fact, I used to use her site all the time, but now WW has restaurant points...so that is good!

Thanks for posting!!! :)

Hi there!!!!

We plan to be there from Saturday, Oct 24 and leave on Wed Oct 28th. But LOTS of stuff has to happen between now and then for that to happen. I do think we will do the race...but how long we can stay will depend on getting grandparents and other CNA's to help. Rick can't handle both kids during school by himself. It takes 2 adults to get both kids ready and off to school.

When are your dates? :)

Maroo Hope you're feeling better today!! Drink lots and lots of liquids!!

Thanks!! :) I have one of those Camelbak water bottles and it helps me drink LOTS of water! I normally get about 9 eight ounce glasses in a day. Plus some Propel. So, I have the water thing down! :lmao:

Oh no! More snow? Yes...jump rope! And music does help a LOT. I found that Disney music is very inspiring...but not as good when I am trying to go fast...ya know? But I do like "I Can Fly, I Can Fly, I Can Fly"...it gets pretty fast in the middle!

I have a playlist of some songs by Tree 63, Point of Grace, 4Him, Third Day, Burlap to Cashmere, MW Smith, Andrew Peterson and Bebo Norman...basically "fast" songs...that get me moving! :) I can send it to you...or post it here (which might be better, huh?)...

By the way, he informed me last night that I won't see a difference in my marshmallow arms, if I don't burn more calories (that translates into "lose a little weight, honey", btw) at the same time. Ah...wearing a swimsuit...certainly a motivator!!!

Aw...how sweet of her to share...:confused3

I am trying not to share with my friends. Although I will be surprised if Lauren doesn't get it. Since I was with her all weekend. But she is taking vitamins! :) And I did wash my hands constantly!

I actually work with cancer patients and I will be doning a mask today because I have talk to a few of them.

We had always thought that too, then we talked to a Social Security counselor and he told us about SSI Work Incentive 1619B. Have you ever heard of it?

It basically states:

Under Section 1619(b), you may continue to be eligible for Medicaid coverage even if you work and make too much to not receive any cash benefits like SSI.

Here is a link about it: 1619B (http://www.socialsecurity.gov/disabilityresearch/wi/1619b.htm)

Right now our dates are Oct. 25-30th, but with Bill that is not set in stone. Does Lauren change her mind a lot? Oh my gosh!!

We would be there at the same time!! :)

Lauren isn't going on this trip...so she doesn't get to change her mind! She is actually pretty good about thinking something through, deciding and then sticking with it. She ends up burning her candle at both ends, sometimes, because she feels like she should follow through on everything. Even if she is really tired.

Lisa and I are going on this one, though. And that is 2/3 of the people that take care of her the most. But with help from grandparents, we should be fine to go...:) 5 days is just a long time to find coverage to make sure her needs are met.

Lisa also has a strange work situation and they won't guarantee time off. :sad2: Of course, once we buy tickets...they better guarantee it! ::yes::

That info re: 1619B is AWESOME! Thank you for that! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Looks like Lauren needs to move to Minnesota! :lmao: She can only make 25K a year here in MS. She better get used to the COLD...brrrr!!! :rotfl:

I won't even tell you. Because some of you actually LIKE me! :rotfl2:

But...

I "clocked" 35 minutes on the Wii Fit. And I spent a considerable amount of time getting it set up...being told how...well...just doing the beginning stuff! And there are a lot of stops and starts as you go from task to task...so I spent about an hour on it.

And I made great food choices today. Got ALL of my fruits and veggies in and didn't go over my points! And I logged every bite! So that is good.

Next I am going to play the drums on rock band for a while...Which I should get activity points for...but I have NO idea how to count those! Anyone???

Tomorrow (Wed) is my regular day off (I work 32 hours a week at my primary job)...so I am meeting my friend at the gym and plan to walk a LOOOONNNNGGGG time! So...I will check back with all of you nice folks later!

This is very preliminary!! The Disboards (Podcast section) are just gauging interest at this point...

This is the 5th time I have posted this...sorry for the repetition for those of you that would have already seen it!! But I am so excited about this possbility!

I do think that the more people that sign up or show an interest will increase the chances that this could actually happen!

During the Marathon Weekend (5K, half marathon, full marathon, and Goofy) they have "charity groups" that raise money as part of the event.

The Disboards have been raising money for Give Kids the World (the resort for Wish Kids - an amazing place!!!!) by selling shirts and someone came up with the idea to set up a charity group to walk/run during the Marathon weekend to raise money for Give Kids the World.

Link to GIVE KIDS THE WORLD: www.gktw.org

Here is the thread:

Give Kids the World Marathon Weekend Interest Thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2079802)

This is what I am hoping you guys will help me do...

Do you know someone that would want to walk/run ANY of the races above FOR GKTW? It would involve raising money for GKTW as part of your race fees, but it is possible we would get some sort of group discount?

Anyway...I am hoping to generate some excitement about this! I really, really want this to work out! :)

If you know someone interested, please click on the thread below (also listed above)...

Where is the village?

I would LOVE to explain GKTW!!

It is a "resort" for Wish Kids. It is located in Kissemmee (spelling) Florida. Right down 192.

Wish Kids are no longer defined by a "terminal" diagnosis. Treatment for cancer and other childhood diseases has come so far that most children diagnosed will not die during childhood. Which is WONDERFUL! But any child with cancer still qualifies. They allow any child with a life threatening condition qualify now.

I went with Lauren - a 15-year-old with severe CP with complications that are life threatening. Her doctor put her name in when she almost died last Christmas after a big surgery.

A child who requests a wish to go to Disney World, children from all over the world), stay at GKTW when they are in Florida. They stay in 2 BR Villas with kitchens, etc. And they are super accessible! Everything is handicapped accessible, right down to the miniature golf course and carousel!!

They feed the children and their families a hot breakfast and dinner, free pizza you can order almost anytime and ice cream ALL the time. Even for breakfast!!

This is my best video that sort of shows lots of pictures of GKTW...it is long at the beginning...you can fast forward through the black/white writing. This was made to be shown to high school students as a fundraiser.

GIVE KIDS THE WORLD!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgkSgVQMxJ8)

What I can't show you is the detail...it is a LOT like Disney World...in the attention to detail. Everything is just magical. The music playing. The volunteers. It really is just a wonderful, magical place for sick kids!

Here are some pictures from the air posted on their Facebook site - check out the new section...it is a castle theme! :)

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=1220860&id=35697977990&ref=mf

They have over 100 villas and stay full most of the year. They were so full, in fact, that Lauren had to stay in Disney Resort instead of GKTW. But we could still go to GKTW at any time!!! :)

I want a place saver to keep my workout information. This will help me as I progress!! :)

Tue, Feb 3 - First day with Wii Fit! Clocked 35 minutes. Did all of the games, so no major focus. 3 points

Wed, Feb 4 - Goal: Walk 8 miles in one workout session, no pace goal. Actual: Walked 4.5 miles in 74.49 minutes, a 16.2 minute mile. Got major blisters from my new shoes and had to stop! 7 points

Thurs, Feb 5 - Wii Fit! Clocked 35 min. About 10 min "yoga"...10 min balance and 15 minutes of aerobic stuff! Then I played the drums on Rockband for about 20 min. 4 points! :)

Fri, Feb 6 - Wii Fit! Clocked about 25 minutes. Mostly aerobics.

Sat, Feb 7 - Walked about 4 miles, outside. Not sure of my pace, because I have no idea exactly how far I walked. Had to stop before I wanted to because my blisters showed back up. I will have to take a day off on the walking for a little while. Also did some Wii Fit activities...only about 10 minutes worth, though.

Sun, Feb 8 - Basically a rest day. Did about 10 minutes on Wii Fit...but basically just chilled!

Mon, Feb 9 - Walked around my condo complex 15 times (about 4 miles)...it took me about 70 minutes. My feet are hurting...have several blisters.

Tue, Feb 10 - Wii Fit - 35 minutes - mostly aerobic stuff!

Wed, Feb 11 - Worked out at the gym. Did 5 minutes on the stair climber from down under!!!!! Won't ever do that again. Made me sick to my stomach. Also did the stationary bike for 29 minutes. I made it 8 miles! Pretty good, for me! :)

Thurs, Feb 12 - NOTHING! Bummer.

Fri, Feb 13 - Wii Fit, 25 minutes, mostly aerobics.

Sat, Feb 14 - Power Soccer Practice - 1 point;

First...I have started a workout journal...I plan to update that as I workout...so hopefully I will make some progress and be able to see in a month or so! :) I will put it in my daily, too...so you guys don't have to look back. :)

Now, I have a confession...yes, a confession...You see, I break a rule. Often. :sad2:

I know we are only supposed to weigh in once a week. But...and I hope this doesn't mess anyone else up...I usually weigh myself a little more often. If my WI day is Tuesday, I usually weigh myself on Mon and Tue. I ALWAYS use the Tuesday weight...but it sort of gives me an idea...I can tell if it is fluctuating.

So...on Monday I weighed and it was a loss of 1.5 lbs....but when I weighed in on Tues, it was a .5 gain. It doesn't mess me up to check my weight. I know that it fluctuates all the time. It is just interesting to me how much it moves around. And helps me feel much better when I don't lose or I lose "too much"...that it fluctuates.

Weighing in too often is what messed my friend up when she was trying to diet. So, I don't recommend it...I just do what works for me.

Anyway...I am getting to a point here...:cool1:

I got a Wii....and it told me my weight. And it calculated a number that was lower than my weight that morning...which was just weird because I usually weigh more at night and had more clothes on! :rotfl2: So, I went over to my regular scale to see the difference and it was right! I had lost weight during the day?!? Strange. :confused3

So, I checked again this morning....I know, I know! :guilty: So, shoot me! :)

And I had lost 3.5 pounds since Tuesday! Good grief! That is 14 sticks of butter, my friend!

So...who knows! :confused3 But I will see next week! Because I am not weighing again! :rotfl2:

Hello everyone! :wave2:

I had a GREAT day today! Good food day...wasn't hungry all day and didn't even use all of my points today. Since I went pretty much WAY over yesterday, I decided to just head to bed and NOT use all of my points today!

I normally make myself eat all of my points...but I could use a "low point day" this week.

Worked out with the Wii Fit. I do think that I am getting something out of it. It told me that I lost 3.1 pounds since Tuesday...which seems a little crazy?! But the exercises are helping me to gain some strength and I am sore...which is probably a good sign that I am doing something, anyway!

Woohoo Maroo:thumbsup2 Keep up the good work.

This is a little odd for me...

But I had 2 good food days in a row! :rotfl2:

The only thing I can figure is that all of the "junk" at work has already been eaten! And I have not bought any junk for home! So...My choices are all made from good potential choices. Does that make sense?

I did do some more time on the Wii Fit. About 25 min. Mostly balance games. Those really get my abs and calves for some reason.

Tomorrow will be a high point day...and I am ok with that. Helps stimulate that metabolism! :) But I also hope to get some activity points from something tomorrow! May be a little tricky because I will be hanging out with Lauren and taking her to a church choir retreat. And I get to eat PIZZA! Woo Hoo. Glad I saved some points! :)

Hope you guys are having a good day. My heart is heavy tonight. I "host" a thread for parents planning Make a Wish trips...It is blue in my siggie...Anyway...it does not take long to get to know these families!! They are very special people raising very special children.

If you think about it...PLEASE pray for 2 of our Make-A-Wish children that are "regulars" on our thread.

Most of the Make-A-Wish children on our thread are stable. They are sick or have been sick...but most of the time, we don't have kids that are in this much distress...now we have TWO! Please pray for each of these precious kids!!

Noah - 3 yrs old - has been very sick in the hospital. Right now he has double pneumonia. He was better this morning. His family is going on his Wish trip in Feb/March and they are praying (as we are) that he will be HEALTHY for that trip. Which will take some prayer, as he has not been healthy for a long time. He is dependent on IV's for food and water. He is a PRECIOUS little boy. I love watching the videos of him laughing. He is a delight.

Noah's PRE-Trip report! Please pray for Noah!!! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2031190)

Becca - 12 years old - They JUST got back from Disney World - days ago! Had a great time on their Wish Trip. But something happened in the last two days and she ended up having to have EMERGENCY brain surgery. They were able to stabilize her. But, she has an infection in her brain. She actually has a tube going into her brain to drain the infection. She is also a precious child! I love to see her smile! She just lights up a room!!!

Becca's Pre-Trip and Trip Report - Please Pray for Becca!!!! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1979336)

Please pray for both of these precious kids!

Thank u for praying!! Becca is not doing well at all. Your prayers are needed!

The Wii Fit is a game that you can buy that comes with this scale looking board. It weighs you and tells you your bmi. And does these balance games that are fun. Then it has aerobic, yoga, strength games too! Pretty cool. Looks like I have lost 3 or 4 pounds this week! I love it. Already feel stronger!!

Thank you so much, Sandy!

I just saw your posts! :goodvibes

Noah is doing MUCH better! (But he has done bad, then good, then bad, then good...so I am going to keep praying for that little guy!)...

But Becca...bless her heart! For those of you guys that are only on this board...Becca is 12. Her family got back from a wonderful trip at Disney World - got back on January 27 and on Thursday (Feb 5) she had emergency major brain surgery. She still has a tube draining from her skull. And they can't give her much pain medicine. So she is having an awful time! They say that the opiate pain meds would cause more problems. Just an awful situation. Her parents are fit to be tied, obviously. And poor Becca!

Please do pray for them if you think about it...

another reason to admire you Maroo

you have to go beyond the present, and yet you have to have the biggest heart!!

My heart goes out to the families whose pain is so strong... just knowing my ds (20yrs old) had a life and death experience - and how strongly I relied on the prayers of strangers - I knew I was like George in "ITS A wonderful Life" and I was so grateful! when I was desperate for faith, I was given angels - and so I extend the circle and pray that Becca and Noah's families also feel the strength of prayer!

My bestest friend in high school - 30 some odd years ago btw - or so, who's counting - she had cystic fibrosis.. she was 4'9" to my 5'10" - and I loved her so much - I learned about faith and pixie dust thru her, and I was blessed to be by her side the night she died - the night my faith was strengthened -

so to have the experience of visiting my son in the hospital, and the past experience of my best friend - I can relate to Becca's parents - and I do lift them up in prayer!!

I didn't want say this on the other board...and I don't think that Mom is reading this...

I lost a friend to CF, too. Jennifer Long. I volunteered at a hospital right down the street from me in college. No big deal...just a couple of hours a week. Playing games! And she LIVED at the hospital. Almost full time. Her parents had basically abandoned her. One day she got released and her parents never came. :sad2:  So I snuck her in the dorm and she stayed with me 2 nights before she got back sick and got re-admitted to Children's. Craziest and stupidist idea ever! But I loved her like a sister...even when she paged me 911 to go buy her some chicken! That child!!!

She died fairly suddenly. She had survived a double lung transplant...but she got sick one week and died just days later. Very sudden.

I miss her...she was such a rascal! :)

Thank you for paying it forward from your experience to the families here.

They really are special families and are really hurting right now. But we celebrate a lot on that thread, too! Kids healed of Cancer. Wish Trips taken for kids that were very sick and are now healthy! :) So it is a good thing, too!

HI Maroo,

HOpe you had a great weekend! Mine was okay- pretty uneventful. Weird, though, the Kazakh tenge (the money) took a major divebomb, and we got about a 11% raise overnight. Funny, when we went out we had more than enough support, but Dad must have known that we'd see the dollar plunge over our last 8 years here so that we basically took an 11% paycut from the loss of value. So, we are thrilled that it's turned around- even suddenly! We do feel for our Kazakh friends though, who will really struggle as the value continues to fluctuate wildly. The price of bread did drop to 15 cents a loaf, but we predict hard times again for many of them.

Ah well, onto getting this body back into shape...

have you ever heard of vacuuming for a workout?? My vacuum cleaner's belt broke a couple of weeks ago, and my carpets were too gross for words. So I got on my hands and knees and went at that carpet like my kids greet a pizza, and used the tiny little hosey thing to go over each inch of carpet. I worked at it for about 45 minutes until my arm felt like it was pot of al dente linguine. I'm counting it as moderate exercise!

My DH says I need to condition my legs a little before trying to jumprope again. I was so sore I couldn't move for about 3 days. So, I will follow his sage wisdom and start with something a bit less strenuous. But.......

I did step on Truth-Teller today, and it says I'm 2 pounds down. Hurray. Only 6 more to go, but then a WHOLE bunch of toning up work to follow up with. Ugh! THat's the hard part, making a 40? body do what you want it to.

Well, I've talked your ear off. It's too late to be sitting here, so I will sign off-

Keep up your good work! It WILL pay off!

Hugs,

Liesa

Moderate activity? I think that vacuuming might count as extreme! WOW! You must really like a clean house. If you are bored....:rolleyes1

Gosh...the economy everywhere seems to be fluctuating! Or diving! Take your pick.

I am glad you got a raise, though! I would definitely stash it, though. :) :rotfl2:

Oh gosh! I would be sore if I tried to jump rope, too!!! :) Sounds so painful. Not sure i was even able to do that as a child. :)

Woo Hoo!! Two pounds down!! That is awesome!!! :) You have probably lost a bigger "percentage" of body weight than I have so far. My ten pounds really isn't much considering how much I really need to lose!

I have not been as good this weekend. I planned a "high" day yesterday and didn't really check my points till I got home...and found out, the hard way, that I went WAY over my points!

So, trying to get back on the wagon! I am about to go to sleep...I don't eat when I sleep...so maybe that will help!!! (Afternoon nap...it is only 2:00 PM here!)

Hey girl! Congrats on your weight loss and all the walking you've been doing...that's awesome! :cool1: I was getting caught up on this thread and saw And I had lost 3.5 pounds since Tuesday! Good grief! That is 14 sticks of butter, my friend! and just about fell off the couch at what a perfect picture that makes, and also just how gross that is. You see, I've taken up baking for friend's parties and such, and it's sooo tempting to like that buttery goodness right out of the bowl :scared: but after the huge superbowl cake and the other 3 that I have to make this month I'm beginning to be able to resist!

I really need to resist some more though...I already do 6 hours a week of exercise with my kickboxing and karate, but I seem to be stuck at this sucky weight :headache: My job is part of the problem. The little man that I take care of hates the cold weather and loves his Veggie Tales movies, so there isn't much movement during my 40 hours/week when I'm with him. Although his mom has a brand new eliptical that I'm free to use at any time, so maybe I'll jump on that for a while each day. Nothing like exercising to the great tunes of Silly Songs with Bob and Larry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZjhjvLO4f4):dance3:

Anyway, I'm really getting psyched up about the half! :yay: I'm sure I'll be speed walking it too, so we'll have to figure out a place to meet up so that we can at least start together! My DH has been running for more than a year now and is up to running over 9 miles with little stopping, so I've made him promise to wait for me at the finish  He's even thinking about turning in a time sheet so that he can start with the "big dogs"

Oh! And thanks for posting the link to the GKTW team thread. I've put in my and DH's votes. I hope it goes through! I'd love to be a part and make a donation to such an awesome place!!! One of my former patients was a recipient of a GKTW trip and loved the resort even more than she loved Disney :lovestruc I've got another patient (http://benandbenniewaddell.blogspot.com) that will eventually be taking a trip down. I've been talking it up to his fam for 3 years now, and can't wait to see the smiles he'll have on that amazing trip!

I would LOVE to meet you guys there. As far as I know, it will be traveling alone, so I hope to be able to meet some DISers to hang with some. :)

What is your pace when you walk?

I am in the same boat with my friend Lisa...she can actually run...and will be waiting for me at the end of the Tower of Terror race! :) I just hope to finish before they start the awards ceremony for the fast people!

I guess this is an official journal entry. A week in review.

I believe I walked close to 16.5 miles this week. WAY more than I have ever done before. So much, in fact, that I think I need to slow down some. I have horrible blisters on my feet...so I need to get that figured out.

I walked on crummy shoes this week and got blisters...and now they aren't healing because I keep walking on them. So...bad, Mary! I have to stop a little bit!

I also "clocked" over 2 hours on my Wii Fit. Which is pretty good for the first week! :) My goal is about an hour a week, at least. I probably could do 2 every week. Maybe do more Wii Fit when I am not walking or something. :)

I did figure out something this week. There is this "baby" triathlon that I did a couple of years ago. Short swim (250 m), 8 mile bike and 2.1 mile run. And they are having it again! May 16. So I have another event to train for! So, I need to get back into my swimming and biking, too...so that I can participate in that!

As far as the diet side of all of this...I did fairly well. Saturday was a killer point day...and Sunday was not great. But the rest of the week was good.

I expect to have a pretty good weight loss when I weigh in tomorrow! I gained .5 last week...so I would like to lose around 4 this week...that would make up for last week, too!! :) We will see!

Well, take care, everyone.

Please continue to keep Becca and Noah in your prayers!!! :)

Weigh In Day.....

Drumroll please :rotfl2: :rotfl: :confused3

Woo Hoo!!!!!!! "Officially" down 5 pounds this week!!

I honestly believe that my last week gain of .5 was not a true gain. Must have been some shift in the water weight or something. Because I dropped the very next day on my Wii Fit body test.

My goal is to not lose more than 2 pounds in any given week and to average 1.5 pound loss per week...but if I count last week (up .5) and this week (down 5), then I have lost .5 too much from 3 weeks ago. Confused yet? :confused3

Anyway, I do plan to slow down some this week to make sure that I don't have another drop like that.

I have several reasons for this:
1. The experts say that you can't lose more than 2 pounds in fat in one week.
2. Losing weight too fast can cause all sorts of problems, including gallstones, and I got those last time I lost some weight too fast...so I believe them!
3. If you lose it too fast, then it is easier to put back on. :sad2:

I want to re-learn how to eat and exercise for the long term and I think I will reach that goal if I slowly lose the weight. :yay: :yay: :yay:

So...that is it!!

Down 5 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited! :dance3:

That's wonderful!!! You should be sooooo proud of yourself! And I totally understand your reasoning for taking it slow and steady. But I didn't realize that losing weight quickly can cause gall stones  My 16yo sis lost a bunch of weight and is having horrible abd pain. They just did an u/s of her gall bladder yesterday, and she said the lady was counting what "looked like holes" I'm wondering if she has stones too :confused3

As for my TR...:guilty: I haven't started on it because most of my pics disappeared. I have a bunch of small memory cards, and I'm guilty of not ever erasing the pics off of them. So, I thought I was being brilliant when I finally put all of my Disney pics onto the computer and erased the cards as i was doing it :sad2: The day I came back from FL my computer died...just totally kicked the bucket! The hard drive is ok, but the rest of the 'puter is dead as a door nail. So, one of these days I need to bring my thumb drive to my patient's house to get some of the pics that I downloaded to their computer. And I'm also waiting on my copy of the photopass CD.

I'm not sure yet what my walking speed is because I've been relying on my kickboxing and karate workouts, but I'm sure I'll be able to go a bit faster than the minimum speed. How fast will we have to go to be sure and not miss the award's ceremony?

Do you know if the Tower of Terror race is full? I'm sure Travis would like to do that one too!

Yep! Sounds like gallstones. They would show up on an ultrasound as black spots...so that is probably what they were seeing.

I had a quick surgery and had them removed! It wasn't so bad...but certainly would have avoided it, if I could!

Thanks for the congrats!!! :)

Oh NO! You lost your pictures!?!? I have mine backed up on the web and on two different computers...just in case. I would just freak out!

I do hope you can get yours from your parents. We would LOVE to hear about your trip! I bet it was crazy!!!!! :)

First, the Tower of Terror race registration does not open until March...and it probably won't fill up too fast. :) So, you guys could still do it!!!!!! :)

The official pace for the half marathon, I think, is 16 minute miles. You are supposed to be able to complete the whole race in 3 hours and 30 minutes. That is a little under 4 mph. BUT...they don't start really "counting" until the last person has gone over the start line. So if you start in the front of the slow people pack, that helps A LOT because it takes some time for all of those people to cross the start line and you get all of those minutes as a bonus.

Someone that walked last year finished in around 4 hours and still got a medal, but did not have an "official" finish time. But who cares about official...I want to finish, to know I finished, and to get some BLING! :)

Now, I don't know about making the awards ceremony? I figure I will still be walking when that starts!! :) I won't be winning any awards! :)

For the Tower of Terror race last year, they were supposed to have a 16 minute pace, but at the last minute, they changed it to 18 minute pace...so that would be easily doable...

The thing you have to remember is that you will have to stop along the way to go to the bathroom and you might want to take a character picture or something, plus, you never know if you can keep your exact pace with all of those poeple around.

My goal is to train so that I can average around 15 minute miles...which will include some jogging...but that is my goal. :)

Good for you! You are making progress, keep up the good work:) I'll not know what my progress is until March 1st, but that is ok because i'll have to have lost weight by then! Keep up the good work, are you following a certain running plan? I am not really, I just work my way up to the distance. Today I ran 2, walked 1 and ran 2. That made me pretty happy because the Shamrock run is 5 miles and I should be able to run the entire thing by this time next month. I have been starting out with a "fast" mile on the treadmill. (Fast is a relative term) After that I slow down. I did run the last 4 on the track tonight so that wasn't bad, although I think the going in circles affects my ankles somewhat. Keep up the good work! I am thinking about doing one of those october races, I would love to go back in October for MNSSHP and Food/Wine. That and I would like to take my daughter again before she is "too old" for Halloween.

I lost 2 pounds this week, not great, but not bad either. I think I need to up the exercise a bit more- Ohhhh, if the mud would clear out faster. I know that may sound weird, but there aren't any sidewalks here, and the mud is just everywhere! I can't run on the street because they drive like maniacs here, and I would be risking my life if I tried that.

Great job on the run 2, walk 1 and run 2 plan! You are definitely well on your way!!

I am not following a specific plan. Honestly, I passed up my plan. I am only supposed to be doing 2 miles by now and I am up to almost 5...so I scrapped it.

I will probably have to use one after a while, though. :)

I have a hard time on a track with the angle and the constant circles, too! MNSSSHP is so much fun! I do hope you are able to do one!

Things might be changing with my plans! Not sure if Lisa is going to be able to go...if she doesn't, then I might do the RFTT instead of ToT? Just depends, I guess. :)

2 pounds!! Way to go! That IS great! They say you can only lose 2 pounds of fat in one week, so any more is water weight anyway! :)

Come on, ya don't want to get all muddy? :rotfl:

Slow and steady...slow and steady...

Hi Mary,
Great job! I had never heard of that before-gallstones from losing too fast. The people on Biggest Loser must have them the size of Mount Rushmore then!!!!!! HA!HA!

I am so psyched for the 1/2 next year to meet so many of you. This year at the full I was so nervous I just kept to myself.

Have a great day,
Linda

Yes, it will be SOOO cool to meet my friends on the DIS! :) I can't wait!

Yeah, my weight watchers internet site used to "yell" at me every time I lost more than 2 pounds in a week. It would tell me all of the awful things that could happen if I lost it too fast. It listed anemia, gallstones, and some other stuff that I can't remember.

I never got anemic, but I sure did get the gallstones!

I really take issue with The Biggest Loser for several reasons. I like the shows intent...but I am just not sure it is a good example. I mean, don't some of us think that we just are not doing enough if we don't drop a TON of weight in a week? Does anyone really need to work out that much? Is it even safe to drop that much weight that fast? There is no "half way house" for those folks, either. Sort of set up for failure. There is no way they can keep up that pace in the real world...I would bet you that most of them gain it all back.

Slow and steady seems the way to go!

BUT...I ate a bunch of peanut M&M's this morning...so I can't talk! :sad2:

Peanut M&Ms you mean they are not part of a healthy diet- so that's what I am doing wrong!HA!HA!

I hear you about the Biggest Loser but I would love to be on the ranch with Bob and Jillian in my face.I need to lose about 15-20 lbs and I am very competitive with myself so they would probably boot me early!

Have a great day,
Linda

Yea...I hate to be such a downer on The Biggest Loser...I know several people that do get inspired from home, which is a good thing! I just hope they don't get too discouraged if they don't lose 15 pounds in a week!!!! :scared1:

Yea...Peanut M&M's are not so good for a healthy diet. :sad2: Especially when your work PROVIDES them...for FREE...in those really large 5 pound BAGS!!!!! :scared1: They also have hershey's kisses and miniatures. I try to hide them...but they keep coming out of those cabinets! Add that to the patients that keep bring us brownies :lovestruc ...and I am messed up for the day! Fred (that monthly visitor) is also here this week...which is not helping with the chocolate craving!

I need to get a handle on it, though, because it is not going to change (the availability of the junk food). I do HAVE good food here that I bring from home. I just need to eat that instead!

I am doing fairly well on the working out. Not logging as many miles as last week...still trying to heal those blisters. But I am doing something fairly consistently, which is good...and a BIG improvement from before!

I am going to Disney!!

THIS WEEKEND!!

Check this out:

Mary's Crazy Last Minute Trip to the World! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2091603)

My dates...Thursday, Feb 19 and going home Monday, Feb 23!!

More to come on my pre-trippie!!

*** Journal Entry for today:

I was awful about food on Wed, Thurs and Friday. But I got my act together on Saturday and have been so excited about my upcoming very fast Disney trip to eat anything this afternoon! So I guess that is good for me! :thumbsup2

I have been updating my workout journal, too. And have been doing a little something every day! Which is so much better than the "old me!"

I can't wait to weigh in on Tuesday and find out if I gained it all back on Wed, Thurs and Friday! I hope not!!!

Hello, there!!

Lol...no, you should not expect to lose 10 pounds a week! :lmao:

I know the feeling. Eat Chinese and you could end up blown up for days! :) So...I have stopped eating that stuff! :)

Where have you gotten lost to? :)

Congrats on the quick trip to Disney! You will get lots of walking in.

It took a long time, but I don't pay as much attention to what the scale says as to how I feel and how my clothes fit. Weight can fluctuate due to so many things.

It also depends on how you process certain foods, like a previous poster noted.

Brings grapes or something to work to replace the feel for needing the M&Ms. Or chew gum if that is an option.

Your are doing great!

Diane,

Thank you for the comments! :)

I learned so much from your journal, too! About just hanging on and not worrying about that scale so much! :thumbsup2

I just need to make sure I am eating right - and especially at first - I think the weight will come off fairly consistently.

I am excited about the trip, to say the least! I do plan to do lots of walking...so I won't be walking much this week. I have blisters, they are painless at this point, but I do have one on each heel. I am trying to get those completely healed before I go on my trip. But I am bringing mole skin and body glide, just in case.

They don't hurt at all in my crocs...which is what I will probably be wearing.

We are excited!! :)

Weigh in day!!!!

Guess what!!

After what I thought was a pretty crummy week.....

I lost 3 pounds!!!!

I can only figure that the strengthening stuff I am doing with the Wii Fit must be really helping...because that is basically all I did this week. I worked out cardio one day in the gym and the rest has been Wii Fit! I love it! And I can finally feel some of the results in my clothes. Which is nice!

So...that is good...going into what I am now calling DISNEY WEEK! I do plan to eat fairly healthy in Disney...ie: not as bad as I would have otherwise! But also plan to splurge some since I will be walking all day!

I also will take the opportunity in Disney to really check out the course for both the ToT 13K and the half marathon. It will help me in training if I can sort of visualize the course...know when I am going to hit a massive hill and know when I am going to see that castle!

So...I hope to be able to report on that when I get back next week! Or maybe while I am there...who knows! :)

Mary - congrats on the loss! I've been thinking about getting a WiiFit, but I think for me it would be the toy of the month and I'd get bored after a month or so. I'm glad you are enjoying it.

Are you getting blisters from your workout shoes? If so, you might want to look at having your feet measured and you might have to go up a size or a 1/2 size. Your feet swell when you work out and that can cause blisters. I just went up 1/2 size in running shoes and there was such a difference.

Have a great time at Disney and think of us who aren't there!

Mary,
Jealous here! I bet the weather is great! Well I know it is 55 there right now-here 15!!!!!!!!!

Great job on the lbs.Going to Disney is so hard when you are trying to be good. The food is so tempting.

My friend has the Wii and loves it too.

A trick to prevent blisters- I ran 2 -1/2 marathons and a full without 1 blister.Don't pay the bodyglide price(???) use solid deodarant on your feet. Less sweating and no blisters :)

Have fun,
Linda

You seem to have a great plan for your workouts...I don't know that I would change a thing! Ya know?

I am enjoying the Wii Fit! Although, with the very last minute Disney plans, I have done NOTHING in the way of working out. I found out Sunday night that I was going...worked late Monday...took care of Lauren last night and have her again tonight. Not sure exactly when I am going to pack? :confused3 :rotfl:

Yeah...I guess when your current temp is 15...the 55 would be welcomed. But it has been in the 70's here several days in the past month (warm for us!) so it might be chilly at the 67 high in Orlando. Which makes you guys from the North laugh, I know! :) It will just be a long sleeve shirt day. :) And maybe bring a short sleeve in case I get too hot! :)

I think the food is going to get me this week. I am going to try to be fairly good...but not great...I will be walking a LOT so hopefully it will be ok!

Deodorant...what a great idea!!! :)

I just need to know how to heal the one I have!! I know I am supposed to just leave it alone...but it looks exactly the same as it has. :confused3 I have been wearing crocs and it doesn't hurt and I don't think it even is affected by the crocs? I will probably wear my crocks all day anyway.

Thank you all so much for posting!!! It encourages me so much!!!! :)

Glad to help :) I am certianly not getting on the scale straight away when I come back from Disney in April. I think i'll hold out until May before I weigh in after that trip. I know i'll be visiting Boma at least once, maybe twice!

Ah...Boma! What GREAT food! :) Best I have had in Disney, I think. I should have done that on my last trip. But hope to hit it on my next! :)

I walked 2.5 miles today and did some weights. Did 35 minutes on the Wii Fit yesterday....

So I am getting back into the swing of things.

My blister is still there...it is not bothered when I wear crocs, which is all that I wore in Disney. So today was my first evening back in tennis shoes.

I am not sure how to get it better? So I am just going to work with it. I have blister bandaids...hopefully they will help? Any suggestions for how to get rid of one? it is about the size of a quarter. It doesn't hurt and only has a little bit of fluid in it. It isn't red around the edges or anything...at least not yet.

Thanks for sticking with me!

My events:

April 18th - 5K Susan G. Komen walk
May 16th - Soak up the Sun Triathlon (250 M swim, 8 mile bike, 2 mile jog)
October 24 - TOT 13K
January 2010 - Half Marathon...hopefully raising money for GKTW! :)

I think BOMA would be a great place for a pre-half marathon carb load :) You have gotten right back on track after your vacation. I am spending the next two weeks getting ready for a 5 mile run the weekend of St Patrick's Day. I am thinking I will try to run 5 miles tomorrow to see how well I do. I am certianly not going to win any races, I just want to be able to keep going:)

I have sort of gotten back off track. I got sick on Friday (after my workout...or maybe I was sick before) and was home Sat and Sun. Went to work today and did 35 min on the Wii Fit...but have not eaten well. So...we will see. Tomorrow is weigh in day....

Hey guys!

In preparation for my triathlon...I did a "brick" tonight!

I did 8 miles on the bike (just under 30 minutes) and 2 miles on the treadmill (right at 33 minutes). I definitely just walked that 2 miles...and I hope to get my time up in a major way on the walking portion! :) Surely jog some! :)

Still have this pesky blister!!!

Well Maroo, you have certainly been busy. I saw on Becca's thread that you had been to Disney but couldn't find out how/when/etc. I am home sick so finally spent a lot of time on Disboards. I am going to read your latest trip report next. But first. fill me in on this marathon thing at Disney. Where do I find info on it? I am a walker only and have never done any kind of races before. But at Disney and raising donations for GKTW, well help me find the details and I am seriously interested. My nephew had a wish trip a couple years ago and stayed at GKTW. They were awesome to him.

Oh yeah......:cool1: you go girl!:cool1:

Awesome! You will find as your legs get in better shape the running will come along. I have been really hitting the elliptical hard lately (45 minutes/600 calories) three times a week and then doing the running on the other two weekdays and I was flying around the track during my run yesterday, then I got on the treadmill and was able to run faster than I had been before. Even though yesterday was a lazy day...... I am thinking about doing a tri-a-tri with my daughter in Brockville this summer. The think that will get me is the swimming, of that I am certian but at least I can train in the lake here for the swim.

Big news, my friends.

A paradigm shift, if you will.

First, you may notice that my ticker is gone...:rolleyes1

Well, that is because we are no longer doing the ToT race! Sorry if there is anyone out there that was planning on my being there...because we are not going to make it!

We decided, instead, that we want to do the Expedition Everest Challenge in September instead of the ToT race in October.

There are a few reasons for this...but the main one is Animal Kingdom Lodge!!! I saw the awesome deals you can get for an AKL room for the race participants and decided we should take advantage of that...especially since we won't ever get to stay there again.

It is also during the more value season. I don't know if it is truly value season...but it is close.

This will probably be a once in a lifetime trip for Lisa and I.

The other reason I like this better is because I am going to be training for a triathlon for the next couple of months. This is a mini sprint tri...which means the course is short. Only a 2.1 mile run at the end...which is not bad.

But looking at the results from last year...if I don't run/jog some...I am going to come in LAST! :scared1:

I know the main thing is to finish...but I really, really don't want to come in last!!!! I am already going to enter the Athena (fat people) category...so, to be the last one in Athena would be even worse. :rotfl2:

So...I must get some jogging/running put into my work out agenda. The walking is going fine...and I don't expect to be really running anytime real soon...but I am going to turn it up a notch. Maybe a half notch!

So...new plan!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to research some "couch to 5K" plans online and see if I can find a gentle one. If I can't, I will still download it and make it gentle!

This will be added to the swimming, biking and walking I have been doing...as well as to the Wii Fit, which I am still using and enjoying! :)

So...there you have it. Today's news. :happytv:

Mary: Just took a look at the description for the Expedition Everest challenge and that looks like so much fun! And to stay at Anilam Kingdom Lodge will be wonderful, I am sure. We'll likely not ever choose to stay there wither - the monorail resorts are just so much easier with Mark's wheelchair...pricey, oh yes, but so much easier!

When you were first recruiting for the DIS/GKTW 1/2 marathon, I do remember showing Mark the EE challenge when I was trolling through all the WDW endurance events. Fact is, getting away in January - or any time - but myself is near impossible (please clone yourself and send one of you to Toronto, Mark could use someone like you!). The TofT is the day after the boys' birthday and was tempting, but it's going to be a very busy fall. Anyway, when Mark read the description of the EE challenge, with th scavenger hunt etc, he decided that this would be the one of the WDW races he thought he'd like to do. I know I run him through a 5K race course because for the last 2 years he's had me "running" him through the 10K Terry Fox run (if you don't know Terry's story, look it up, he was very inspirational and the run now makes $$$ for cancer research). Anyway, Mark declared that he wants to do the EE challenge someday...and he told me I didn't have to push him...he's do it in his walker!!! What a trooper, bless his heart!

The Expedition Challenge sounds like fun and you will enjoy AKL. It is one of my favorite resorts down there.

Hope you had a great time on your last trip.

I'm not a swimmer, so I don't know if I could ever do the swimming portion of a triathalon, but I don't mind the walking/jogging and biking.

Looking forward to following your progress as you train for the new event.

Try doing the elliptical more, I am convinced that helps with running without actually having to do the running. I have been doing the elliptical three days a week for 45 minutes each and running the other two days and I notice a difference in my run. After doing the elliptical with resistance and elevation it is like nothing to run a mile on flat land. Keep up the good work. The weather is getting nicer and it will be good to start running outside again.

I would imagine that the killer elliptical WOULD help!! :) Because it kicked my tail. :) I plan to do it again on Wednesday when I go back to that gym. I am not sure why I did not do anything today. :( I worked late and now it is too close to bed to do anything right now...I am so tired from this weekend, honestly.

The weather is gorgeous here...mid 70's...little bit cloudy...but the pollen count is 9.8/10. And I just can't stand it out there. I have started all of my medicine for asthma again...but it will be a week or so before I can safely get out there and try to exercise. Since I live alone, I try to be careful. I could have an asthma attack and keel over and they would not even notice till mid-morning at work. :) You guys would probably miss me first. :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:

I'm struggling with the whole enormity of it all - the weight, the exercise, the run(I call it wog! walk/jog) In my head I'm fine with it all... but reality really bites sometimes...

That AP is a mahvelous thing!! Good for you!! I think the EE sounds fun too!! I also think having those goals throughout the year is a good thing - I guess I'd better find a 5K to make as a goal!

the weather here in Chicagoland is NOT cooperating!! Its so raining, and cold, tomorrow its going to be very cold, with more rain! YUCK... but in the end its just an excuse...

so thanks for continuing to post about your journey, it truly is inspiring!!

well, haven't wieighed in far too long, but no matter. I've been very slack in everything, but esp. exercise. I guess it doesn't help when you make a fantastic meal like crepes with creamed chicken or scalloped potatoes! I wish green veggies were easier to get here!

Oh well, I'm ordering that iPod this week and someone will bring it into Dubai for me, so when I get back I can hit the walking with, What else??!, Disney music.

Keep up the good work!!

Leisa,

If you get an iPod...see if you can get the couch to 5K plan loaded on there...if you ever want to run/jog some.

I just started it.

Basically it has me walking 5 min to warm up...then jogging 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds and 5 min cool down for a total time of 31 minutes....

It plays in the background of the songs that I really like and tells me when I should walk and when I should jog...works pretty well!

But I am only on day 1... :) ha ha

I am pretty bummed today.

First...where I have been this week on my goals...

Worked out 3 times this week including a couch to 5K plan, weights, biking and some swimming. Not too bad.

Food has been ok. It is that time of the month and this has been a heavy one, so I have not felt that great. I need to do better on the food deal!

My major problem right now is that I am totally bummed!!

Lisa is having second thoughts about coming with me to Disney at all for any race. She is having issues with injuries and trying to find someone to cover to help Lauren while both of us are gone. And she says she doesn't like Disney World like I do. :(

This makes me very sad. I just got back from Disney by myself and had a good time...but I don't want to go do a race by myself. I was looking forward to doing it with Lisa.

Anyway...I am bummed...and discouraged...

So, there you have it...

Don't get discouraged, just do a "fresh start" on Monday, that is what I am planning on doing! This week has been less than optimal in terms of eating, and working out. I did the 5 mile run today though and that has inspired me to get back on track. Now I have to start thinking about another run to do between now and the Boilermaker in June. I also have to get registered for the half marathon which is 70% full as of this week when I checked so I have to get going with that. You certainly won't be running the half-marathon alone even if you take the trip yourself, there will be a lot of wishers there, including myself. You can do it and trust me, you won't regret it!

 She hasn't said definitly no yet, that's a good sign. Give it a few days, seems you have had a bad week.

My name is Lisa and I love Disney. I'd offer to go with you as I am just a couple hours from you, but some how I don't think it would be the same.

I am hoping that she will come around. She was excited about it. But she had a bad week and is generally frustrated with her world.

Well it will be Lisa's loss because we are all going to have a great time cheering each other on.You will have tons of support and hook up at a resort where you know other Disers(usually Pop) hang out.

Hi guys!! :)

I am attempting something I have never done before...

running.

well, running is probably an overstatement.

Jogging. Or wogging, as my friend called it. :rotfl2: For those of us that probably could walk faster.

I downloaded a couch to 5K program on my iPhone. I love the program! You get to use your own music and it just sits there in the background telling you when to do your 5 min warm up, when to run (60 seconds) and when to walk (90 seconds)...you do the walk/run for 20 minutes and then a 5 min cool down. And the program just tells you what to do...(beep, beep, beep - run...60 seconds later you hear...beep, beep, beep - walk...) you get the idea.

This is week 1, day 2, for those of you guys that are familiar with the program.

My only problem is...I can't run for 60 seconds straight. Isn't that HORRIBLE? I am SOOOOO out of shape. I also have asthma and it really kicks up when I try to run...especially outside in the pollen. When I use my inhaler, my heart rate goes up and I get shaky, but if I don't use it, I can't breathe. Breathing is better, I have decided. :thumbsup2 So I just do one puff on my inhaler and try to tough it out.

So...I guess I am looking for a little encouragement here. Anyone else in this boat? Or is this just a useless exercise? I do think I got a good workout. Still sweating!!

My other issue is water. I am trying to plan ahead for the triathlon I am doing (2+ miles) and all of the other races I am thinking about (up to the half!)...I can't go 1 mile without drinking water. And that is the spacing for the water stops for the half. Maybe I can by then...but I can't right now. I bought myself one of those camelback backpacks and could use that...although I feel pretty stupid wearing it for my 2 mile wogging. (Sandy, I am stealing your term...and using it as both a noun and a verb!) So...what do you guys think? Do any of you guys doing the half ever wear those water backpacks? Am I stupid to wear it?

I won't wear it for the tri...because there is water on the way there and on the way back...so I should be good for that one!

Anyway...any help, suggestions, from those of you guys that have been there?

TIA!!!! :)

Linda

I finally decided to leave Lisa alone about it for a while.

She has horrible shin splints...which I think is the main reason that she can't imagine training right now. Plus, her son has been really sick (salmonella)...so I am going to hold off, for now.

So...I am going to just hold off. Not sure what I will do if she doesn't want to run. I might try to talk her into a Sept trip to Night of Joy or something, if she can't train to do a race.

But, won't cross that bridge until she decides what she would like to do! At the worst, we won't be able to stay where I want to stay, because it will probably be sold out by then...if it is not already. But we can still go and stay value or even offsite, if we had to.

I am hoping to get some details SOON from the DIS Unplugged GKTW team. I really, really want to raise money for GKTW. I just love that place. That is where my heart is, ya know. But waiting to see what sort of deals they can work out with Disney.

So...I am in a holding pattern. I am planning two other trips...and will start two pre-trippies for those sometime soon! :) So stay tuned. Never a dull moment around here!!!! :)

Maroo, any exercise is good exercise. I can't run for very long either. My legs hurt real bad when I try to run. I keep trying, but I know not to push to hard, just push kind of hard. I figure keep on walking and the running may come. Keep up the good work!

Maroo -- I have asthma and have had problems with it and running too, but, I've also run a half-marathon before, so, I know it's possible. I have two pieces of advice:

First, your asthma may not qualify as properly under control. When I first started running I was having problems with mine and eventually discovered that I needed to be on a regular steroidal inhaler. What sort of regular maintenance meds are you taking? Have you spoken with your doctor about them lately? Also, the heart racing thing isn't really good. If you combine the rescue inhaler with too much exercise it could be bad. Since you're only doing short runs for now it might be okay, but, track your heartrate and keep it safe -- okay? As my running improved, my asthma during running generally improved as well and I levelled out, but, I still have bad days.

Second, you said that you can't run 60 seconds. Okay, that doesn't mean that it's a bad program for you, just that it needs tweaking. I've always been a walk/run runner. I find that the heartrate drop during the walking phase really helps my asthma too. Can you walk for 20 minutes without driving your heartrate up? Can you walk briskly for 20 minutes? How long can you run for without feeling like you're going to collapse? Take the answers to those questions and then make a different (likely longer) plan. I can help if you want because I've worked out a bunch of running plans over the years--there are also plenty of actual experts who have plans you can follow I just don't tend to think they ease in enough for the true beginner. (Btw, how many days a week are you trying to work out?)

Thank you!

I will take any help I can get.

I take Singular and Advair daily now, but I just started that recently - this last bit of pollen has really caught me off guard.

I have only done the running thing twice. I can walk as much as an hour at a brisk pace (16-17 min miles) without getting too winded. But as soon as I start jogging, I have a rough time.

I think I have sort of decided (with the help of the folks on the C25K thread) that I am going to do 5 min walking, 30 seconds jog (slow), 2 min walk, 30 secs jog, 2 min walk...until I have done the job/walk for 20 min total...then the 5 min cool down. About 30 min total.

What do you think about that plan?

I am still sore today from yesterday, so instead of doing another set tomorrow, I am going to go swimming instead. That will relax my muscles that are sore and still give me a good workout.

I am working out, in general, about 3 times per week. It is occasionally 4 and sometimes as little as 1, if my schedule is messed up. I do gym stuff (elliptical, weights, bike, treadmill), this 5K thing I just started, ride my bike or swim for my workouts.

I think we need a couch to beginner plan and then the beginner to 5K... :)

I HAVE to tell you this before we get cut off for the night!!!

I DID IT!!!

I did Week 1, Day 3 of the Couch to 5K plan (program on my iPhone) and I followed the instructions exactly! I actually jogged the 60 seconds, walked 90 seconds and jogged 60 and so on!!! I did it! :woohoo:

I actually forgot my inhaler and figured I would have to really slow it down tonight. I was at the gym on the treadmill. I did so much better inside! I am sure the treadmill doing some of the work helped, too! But I am so, so excited!!!

You fitness enthusiasts are going...UH...DUH. That is no big deal. But I felt like I had run a race! I almost did something totally stupid and raised my hands when I was done...you know, like a race. Now how funny would that have been! :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

Anyway...I better post this before they pull the plug on me!! Thank you all so much for encouraging me to keep going!

Ok...

I finally made a decision.

First of all, Lisa is not going to go to Disney. I have sort of sat on it for a while and she has not expressed any interest in going. So I asked today and she is definitely not interested in going anymore.

I am sad about that...but I do understand.

She is injured and has not been able to gain any ground on that. She can't even imagine, at this point, walking in Disney as she goes to the parks, much less doing any kind of race. Plus other things going on that just don't allow her to plan very far in advance.

So...That leads me to my next decision.

I sort of went backwards...

January - Definitely doing the half marathon. I have a lot of support on this board to do this...meeting lots of cool folks here and should be able to hopefully set up some DIS meets while I am there...so I am going...solo or not...in January! *Still need to decide if I am going on my own, with the DISUnplugged/WISH/GKTW team OR with Team in Training. Team in Training has some advantages...including that I would have people to actually travel with. And I would be raising money for cancer, which is a big deal for my work.

December - Going with some friends...will start a pre-trip report at some point for this...gosh, I have some pre-trippies to work on!!

That brings me to a fall race. It really doesn't make much sense for me to just off and go to Disney by myself to do a fall race when I am already going to be doing a race in January.

So...that brings me to the fall. I saw the Free Dining message above...and have been hanging out on that thread...and have decided I am going to go in September!!! Free Dining is just too good to pass up. I am able to go for a LONG time in Sept and only take three days of work...so I am thinking I will do that. The focus of this trip will be the Night of Joy! I love Contemporary Christian music and can't wait!!! I have two friends I have talked to about going with me...so I am going to wait to hear back from them and book a trip!!! :) Woo Hoo!!!

So...that is where I am today...

Oh yeah...the WISH part of this... lol

I lost another half a pound this week!! :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Considering I ate everything in sight on my Birthday (which was Sunday)...I am lucky to have lost anything. But I have been doing my running every other day...so that has helped tremendously!

Thank you all for all of your support and comments!! I really appreciate it!

Sorry Lisa isn't going to go with you. You were really looking forward to spending some time with her. Maybe another time you all will get to do a trip together.

Yay on the 1/2 marathon. Hopefully we will see each other and get to say hello.

Can't wait for the next pre-trip report. You do really good ones.

Congratulations on the successfull running! That's so fantastic. I've been contemptating starting a bit of a running program myself, and your very inspirational. I'm in pretty horrid shape, and while I can walk pretty quickly for long distances I've never been able to run without finding myself doubled up and weezing. For some reason I'm finding I have running on the brain lately, and am toying with the idea of doing a 1/2 marathon at some point. Probably mostly walking, but I'd like to do some running too. (Just to be sure I don't get "swept").

I highly recommend a couch to 5K program. For those of us that really, really don't run...it is hard, even at the beginning...but it has gotten so much easier!!! :thumbsup2 And I do much better inside on a treadmill.

I honestly don't ever plan to get past the first few weeks of the program. I will probably always jog some and then walk some...even for the half. My present goal is to finish the half in under 3 hours and 30 minutes. Although, that may be adjusted as I get used to the jogging. But right now I think I would finish considerably over that time and may get swept...if I had to do it tomorrow.

It would be so cool for you to join us to do the half in January!! If you are already walking long distances, you could totally do it!

We could have a big DIS meet!!! :) And I will be by myself, so I am all about finding some folks to even do the parks with! :thumbsup2

You should read Sandy341's report on her experiences with the half...

Sandy...if you are out there...can you post a link to that? Shoot, it maybe in her siggie...I will go look. That was inspiration to me!! :)

Looks like I'm going to just miss you. Right now I'm planning on being there from the 5th to the 11th even though it kills me that seems to be the black out week for discount codes.

I'd love to do Jan. but I'm not sure financially it's going to be an option, especially since I'll just be going in December. I really would love to do a Disney half marathon though. I'm toying with the idea of the Princess one next March, but again I'm going to have to see how things are going money wise. Stupid economy!!

I just requested a book, and the author's name is escaping me at the moment, from interlibrary loan, that I found alot of people on the Wish boards were recomending. Something about Marathoning for normal people or something like that. I think it's the fact that I've never been able to run, even as a child, that has me wanting to attempt it. I have many memories of walking the majority of a stupid 600 yd. dash as a kid to the dismay of my gym teacher.

A problem I'm facing at the moment is a bit of treadmill fear. I went flying off the back of the treadmill at the gym a few weeks ago when I first started going and started it too fast. Since then I've been a bit gun-shy about bumping up the speed even though I know I've walked faster than what I'm doing before. I'll probably try the couch to 5k program outside just to be on the safe side. I know my fears are ridiculous, and I didn't even really hurt myself badly, but it keeps playing on my mind.

My brother is a runner and recently my nieces ran a mile run at one of his races with him. (They are 5 and 7). One of these days I'd like to run the whole mile with my younger niece. If she can do it, so can I!

Yeah...I understand the hesitation to go in both Dec and Jan. My Dec trip is being mostly paid for by the family I am traveling with. I already have the AP, am riding with them and paying only half of a highly discounted room. So I only have food to buy and we plan to eat in the room for breakfast. So that trip will be inexpensive for me.

I just can't decide what to do about Jan. I need to make a decision soon about these trips so I can start to budget and make sure I can swing them all! I am going to Chicago in May with Lauren, too, but only have to pay for my souvies/snacks on that trip.

But maybe you can shoot for the half in 2011! I certainly hope to make mine a yearly event!! :thumbsup2

And I will take good notes for those of us that are true walkers! :)

Another book I highly recommend is Slow Fat Triathlete. It is written by a hilarious lady that is cut from the larger mold...and she talks about exercise and how she got started doing triathlons. It is just a funny read...even if you never plan to do a triathlon! She is truly funny! And quite inspirational.

I can't believe you fell on the treadmill. I would have just died and certainly understand your fear! Did just a ton of people see that? That is a big fear of mine. I did almost fall a few weeks ago when I was walking and messing with my iPhone. Bless your heart!!

But go for it!!! You can certainly do it outside! It is a lot faster to go right out your front door and walk/jog than to have to get in your car to go to the gym. Let us know how it goes!

Have you seen the C25 thread? Those folks over there are very nice!!! :thumbsup2

I take Singular and Advair daily now, but I just started that recently - this last bit of pollen has really caught me off guard.

That seems like it ought to control things. If they are new, it may take awhile to work. Talk to your doctor again if things don't improve.

I have only done the running thing twice. I can walk as much as an hour at a brisk pace (16-17 min miles) without getting too winded. But as soon as I start jogging, I have a rough time.

If you can walk briskly without getting winded, then, you can learn to jog. Just keep adjusting the program until it works.

I think that sounds like a great way to start. You can then increase the jogging to 45 seconds and then 1 min and then start decreasing the walking time to 1min45 seconds, 1min30 sec, 1min15sec, 1min before you increase the running. Or, simply decide that the 2 min of walking is good for you and keep it while you increase the running. Most of the programs just drop you straight down to 1 min of walking. But, I think that for some people a 2 min walk is more useful during longer runs.

Also, most programs eventually get you to 10 min of running and then 1 min of walking. But, with what you describe as your goals, I might simply aim to get to 5 min of running and 1 or 2 min of walking and then add endurance.

:)[/QUOTE]

I did it! :woohoo:

Woohoo!

I actually forgot my inhaler and figured I would have to really slow it down tonight. I was at the gym on the treadmill. I did so much better inside! I am sure the treadmill doing some of the work helped, too! But I am so, so excited!!!

Yeah, not using my inhaler tends to make it easier for me to keep going too.

Also, indoors is often easier--especially if you're dealing with triggers outside.

But, it's still fantastic!

Guess what, guys!!!

I did 3 whole miles in UNDER the 16 minute mile pace! This actually included my warm up walk, which gets me behind on my pace, too! I figure I will have to warm up that morning, so I better keep that 5 minutes in.

I am so excited!

I have a LONG way to go, though! Before I am able to do 13.1 miles outside...good thing I have 10 months!!

Gosh...if I add ONE mile per month I will be fine. That is a really cool way of looking at it. I am going 3 miles in under 16 minutes per mile in March...so my new goal will be 4 miles in under 16 min per mile in April...then 5 in May...6 in June...and so on. Then I will be ready by January! My 13th month!!! :)

How cool is that. Sounds doable...right?? Right??

On a health note...The Singular is working WONDERS for my allergies and asthma. Even with pollen counts in the "don't dare go outside" category...I am doing fine! :thumbsup2

:yay: :cheer2: :cool1: :woohoo: :yay:

You are using the same plan as me. Add more mileage each month. Only I am doing it each week. Each week I walk a bit farther and figure I should be there by January. But I am not up to 16 minute miles yet. You are way ahead of me and will probably leave me in the dust. :rotfl:

I very highly doubt you will leave me in the dust! I just hope we BOTH leave the sweepers in the dust!!! :)

I will see tonight if I can do it again! And this was on a treadmill...I have not been able to do it outside yet! :) :rolleyes1

You guys remember back when Lisa decided she didn't want to go back to Disney? She has been hurting when she exercises...her hip, knee and shin has been giving her fits.

Well, today we sort of got some clue as to why. Lisa has a stress fracture in her tibia. Actually, that is the best case scenario. She had an MRI and the report actually mentions several things it could be... some I don't even want to think about.

But she is on crutches. Which means no Disney for her. They say it takes about 6 months to get back to "normal" and her fracture is pretty bad. They even mentioned a year before she can really exercise hard, like running or jogging. She won't be on crutches that long, obviously.

But...she can't lift Lauren. And will have a very hard time taking care of her at all in this state. So pray for her...and for all of us. Because it is no fun when the Momma is sick, ya know what I am saying? But since she is Momma of a disabled teenager...it is worse!!!!

Thanks for your prayers!!!!

I am so sorry!!!!! :) I hope you are still reading and see this!!!

I think the multiquote threw me off and I just missed it...sorry!!!

To answer your post...

My new asthma meds seem to be doing the trick! I don't feel nearly as bad when I am outside!

I have made a few decisions...this is such a process for me! :)

I am going to walk...at least 2 hours a week. I did an hour straight this evening. I am going to concentrate on walking, to hopefully drop a significant amt of weight through the summer. I will still do the triathlon in May, but my focus will be on finishing it and not worrying about my time. If I am dead last, at least I started and completed it, right! :thumbsup2

Then let the walking take me all the way to August.

In August, I will sign up for the Team in Training. This will take the pressure off of me for training and figuring out what team I will be running for, etc. I am just tired of thinking about that. I really need accountability and with Lisa out of commission, it is going to be harder for me to stay motivated. And since this is my first major race, and I am going straight to the half (no middle race in between) I want to make sure I have plenty of accountability to finish strong.

I work at a cancer clinic, so fund raising for cancer support and research will be cool. Not as cool as raising money for GKTW...but maybe next year when I have my first race under my belt. :)

Every time I try to jog, I just end up going overall slower than when I just walk and my endurance is a LOT better when I walk. Not sure if it is just all of this weight I am carrying around, my asthma stuff, or a mixture of all of that, but for now - I plan to focus on walking. :thumbsup2

I'll have to go over and check it out. I love free dining!

I am loving planning that trip! I love free stuff! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much!! This is April...so the goal is 4 miles in that 16 min mile pace!!! Let's see if I can do it!!! :thumbsup2

I doubt I will leave ANYONE in the dust!! :lmao: I heard someone say on a podcast that he plans to wear a shirt that says "DON'T SWEEP ME!" I think I might have to come up with a sign that says the same, I think!!! :)

Update on Lisa....

Sorry I forgot to post it here last week. I have too many threads going! Hence my neglect of this one!

Lisa has what they think is a stress fracture is her tibia. But it is covering a very large part of her tibia (2/3) and the swelling (even in her bone) is pretty severe. They can't actually see the fracture, they just think it is there. Plus her knee has a double torn meniscus.

She has an appt with the orthopod tomorrow, so hopefully they will know more after that appt.

Regardless, she is out for the foreseeable future as far as being a training buddy. :( And I am trying to help them more often since Lisa can't really do as much for Lauren using crutches.

Anyway...that is the update! :)

I'm glad to hear that the asthma meds are working and that you've got a plan in sight. Training with a team is always a good idea--especially for a first race.

Starting to run/jog does usually slow most people down. So, when you are ready to start running don't stress too much about that...it'll improve with practice.

It doesn't matter if you run or walk in any given "race" (for me race is a relative term), what matters is that you do it. I got back out on the road today, feeling better and I think I am out of my funk thanks to the universe taking care of me again :)
