Are these cards really :confused3 worth it? We are going in August and we are a family of 5 and I am unsure if we should purchase this card or not we have dining discounts through our DVC membership

That all depends on you and how you eat. For many, 20% off on food and drink for $60 can save you money, especially if you can travel more than once in the year. You need to do what we do, and take the time to look at food prices and see if the TIW will work for you.

If you, as a family of 5, enjoy table service meals, it won't take long to rack up $300 in meals at WDW. After that initial $300, to offset the $60 purchase ($60 is 20% of $300) then you'll be saving 20% (or about the amount of the tip) on every table service meal. It can add up quickly.
The DVC discounts are mostly 10% and have more restrictions (many are lunch only), and usually do not include alcohol.

You don't say if you will have an AP (which you need to get the TIW card). Chuck's calculations for the savings would be true if you were already buying APs (or at least one AP). Remember to factor that in to any calculations.
As well it can be tricky when you have different tickets in your party. For example if everyone else have MYW tickets with WF&M (or whatever the acronym is now) you need to account for the admission to the water parks for the person with the AP.
I'm not trying to talk you out of getting the TIW card. It can generate a great deal of savings but you need to carefully calculate the cost of acquiring the card.

Another thing I really like about the TIW card, Valet service :snooty: at GF or any resort not a DVC resort, :thumbsup2 costs you nothing. In other words Valet service for free, minus the tip:cool1: . Eating at Citricos :goodvibes for dinner and staying at OKW? Climb into your auto, drive up:drive: to the front for Grand Floridian, give them your keys and it痴 off to dinner.  Lets see, last time I checked, Valet service at GF is about $10. Doesn't take long to get the $60 back.:thumbsup2

Chuck I was lying in bed last night and I had a brain thought, :rotfl2: or something unmentionable. As I understand the TIW card, when you use it the servers automatically add an 18% gratuity. If so doesn't that wipe out all but 2% of the 20% savings.:confused3
So I would actually have to spend $3,000 on just food :scared1: to break even for paying the $60 for the card?
I know my math must be off somewhere, can you show me where it is?

It is a fact that they add the tip, however, unless it is your custom to "STIFF" the servers, it still works out as a savings. We bought a TIW card over MLK weekend and the meal for 4 we had at Narcoose's on the last night paid for most of the card not to mention the other meals we put on the card. I'll be using the card late next month for a guys golf trip for four days and in October DW and I will be taking two other couples for 5 days so it will more than pay for itself.
Because of the number of visits in the 12 month period the AP made a lot of sense so that didn't need to be factored into the decision.

Do you not tip at all? It's true that we would mostly give an 15 - 20% tip, so we just don't include the tip in figuring out our savings.
Bobbi:)
PS. The first year we had the card, DH took care to include everything we bought with it. The tip wasn't included in the bill at the time, but he did take that into account in the records. This is our 3rd year with the card, and it's been a definite savings for us.

We almost always tip 20%. So we use the TIW, get the 20% off and just stil pay the 20% tip. For example, if the check is $100 we use the TIW and pay a total of $100. We save $20 or 20%. We pay for it in 2 or three dinners. Saved big at the Flying Fish.

What I do is add the 18-20% to the charges or just use the suggested amount for tips.:) But while I have the card and haven't used it yet, will do so in JUST 6 days, :goodvibes it still seems to me if you are saving 20% and are automatically charged 18% you are only saving 2%.:confused3

You need to have the Quote=***** with [ at the beginning and ] at the end of the first quote statement you want in the box as well as a /QUOTE at the end of the statement you want in the box with the brackest [] around that also. It looks like you did not have the one at the end of your quote statement.

I think it's worth it if you like going to signature restaurants. It beats using 2 table service credits.

I also am cosidering the dining card for an upcoming trip. One thing I noticed is that if we were to use it for counter service, where we normally would not tip, a tip is added anyway. This does decrease the savings. I guess I need to figure out how many table service meals we are likely to have. The card does include alcohol which is nice,

The TIW card is accepted at most TS restaurants in the parks & resorts & a few at DTD, but they are also accepted at the CS locations listed below & because they are considered CS, they do NOT charge the 18%:

I originally had that thought about the tip being added and then I realized that I tip 20% anyway so it is still a savings. Now I have to do the math and decide what is the best deal the TIW card, the meal plan or a combination of both because the meal plan is just to much food for 15 days:upsidedow

Was there free valet parking with the DDE card? I know I was charged $10 last year when we went to GF for dinner, but if it's free, that was my fault as I never showed the card.
My DDE card doesn't expire until May so I won't be getting the TIW for this upcoming trip.

Yes, you need to show the DDE/TIW card and a dining receipt for free valet.
For table service dining, be sure to check the final receipt, although they are supposed to, they do not always add the gratuity automatically. Rule of thumb, if the final total of your bill is about the same after the discount as before the discount, the gratuity WAS added. If there is a substantial difference, it was NOT, and you need to add a gratuity.

Quick question.
We bought AP's last August and the DDE at the same time. I believe we have until Sept of this year to use it so it should cover us for dining even tho our AP's will be expired for this August. We may be buying new AP's instead of renewing so that we can get this August and next August out of the same AP. Can you hold off and purchase the TIW card anytime during the year as long as you are an AP cardholder at the time of purchase?

We always have the DDE (I refuse to call it Tables in Wonderland or whatever they call it now) when we go. As Florida residents, we are eligible to purchase even when we do not have an Annual Pass. In addition to the posts above, another consideration is that alcohol is included in the discount. Not that I drink. Much.

I went so far as to figure out our food costs per person per day...and it was roughly the same as buying the DDP, but INCLUDED the tip. Two of us had drinks a few nights (they're included for the discount), and we ate 1 TS and 1 CS per day, plus had Mickey bars as a snack.:goodvibes So for those of you wondering...it comes out about the same, money wise.:) I like the TIW better....you're not always counting credits :sad2: and can order what you want. We stayed at SSR, and Artist Pallette(CS) takes the TIW, AND it can be used on Mickey Bars there. (We're addicted. :lmao: )
Be careful with the free valet, though. We ate at CR on our last night, and valet charged me $10...I didn't discover it until I got my bill when we were checking out, and since valet is independent from Disney, the resort couldn't take it off my bill. We were leaving, and I didn't have time to spend to straighten it out at CR.

We have the DDE card and I was worried that we wouldn't break even, but with a party of 6 I figured it wouldn't take long.
Here's what I figured:
$100 - 20% discount = $80 + 18% tip = $94.40
w/o the card: $100 + 18% tip = $118.00
Savings $23.60
Now that's just one meal, and a cheap one at that :rotfl:
So, as long as we eat three meals in a year it has paid for itself!

We're trying the TIW this year, instead of the DDP. With the DDP we always had left over CS and snacks - could not manage to eat it all.
We are also doing two trips this year to maximize our AP and TIW, so I think it works very well in this scenario.

I bought a TIW for my last trip and loved it. Something I thought unusual when I bought groceries (eggs, bread etc.) at Artists Palette. The cashier saw my TIW card on the lanyard around my neck and asked me for the card. He gave me the standard TIW discount on the groceries. I knew that the CS at Artists Palette qualified but I didn't know that the groceries did as well. Has anyone else asked for and/or received the TIW discount for groceries? In my case, the discount went through just fine.

What's interesting is even adding 20% back in to the $148.19 for the TS locations & adult beverages, (20% of $112.84) the DDP would only have saved you 68「. Just not worth the hassle, IMO

Have been using it since the DDE card started. For us it is a no brainer because we have probably 25 or more sit down dinners at WDW during a year. Also the 18% tip really is not that high when you compare it to not using the discount and doing normal tipping because the tip is added after the discount is taken. Example: assume $100 meal with no discount and you tip 15% to make total $115. Use discount card and that $100 meal is $80, add 18% tip to that $80 and tip is $14.40, under the 15% tip you would have paid without using the discount.

I was totally set to jump from the DDP to the TIW until I realized that most counter service places are NOT on the TIW. I figured that there would be at least one place in each park where you could eat. Wrong.
I had made a document whereby I compared all of my meals both on the DDP and the TIW, and the TIW plan seemed like a much better deal to me. But now that I found out that finding counter service restaurants that accept the TIW is difficult, all my calculations are out the window. Ugh!
Doesn't this bother anyone else?
I think the main issue is that Disney no longer feels like we are a flight risk. With more hotels and parks than ever, and with the Disney Magical Express making a rental car less prevalent, people are stuck on Disney property and are eating their meals in the restaurants whether Disney offers a discount or not. They know this, which is why I think they don't feel compelled to offer many counter service discounts.

I prefer the TIW we're not bozzers but the TIW covers the entire bill, even if we just go to ESPN and get nachos and a few beers we get the 20 off. Plus we don't always want a big dinner, guess it depends on your meal preferences DDP seems to work for a lot of people. There is also a huge cost difference $65. a year for TIW. I would get it even if I was going to use the DDP for one or two trips.

Uh, no, that is not the reason.
Counter service discounts are really only offered at resorts/parks where there is not a good Table Service alternative. The value resorts, for example, have no Table Service. Animal Kingdom park, until recently, had no Disney operated Table Service venue.
Remember the history of the DDE/TIW. It was originally only offered to Florida residents to encourage locals and local business to consider Disney locations when going out to eat in the area with family and friends. It only recently bacame available to all Annual Passholders. It was not initially intended to be a discount card for all AP/onsite guests.

I was thrilled to know that the counter services in AK still accept TIW because I really like FTB! I admit that I've been tempted to go over to the values for some meals because the food courts accept TIW and at Pop, I do like the salmon/fish dinner and a few other entrees that they have. Haven't done it yet, aside from the times that I stay at Pop.
Bobbi:)
PS. Truly, it doesn't bother me. DH and I went to WDW long before we bought DVC, and never got any discounts. We always bought some sort of prepaid package because I just knew each trip was costing a lot, and I didn't want to have to pay for it after the fact. DVC has helped me enjoy WDW and has made it more affordable for us.

Isn't the tip figured before the discount?
yep, at each restaurant the tip was figured after the discount was taken off.

Isn't it customary to tip on the full bill (food, drinks, not tax), not the adjusted bill? That's what I've always heard.

since they automatically add the tip for us, do you figure what the tip would have been on the full bill and then add it as an extra tip?

yes but anything that demands that tip 18% get nothing extra from me.
now would be tipping 20% - but only if it my choice.

that's kinda how I think too. We normally tip 20%, but since they've decided I must tip 18% just because my family of 6 sits down.. no matter what we order, or how our service is... then they'll get their 18% :confused3

Yes, if you are doing the choice of tipping, no if it is a manadatory tipping system that they are calculating in, in which case it is on the amount after the discount. For the most part with the 18% tip amount what is really happening is that you are usually paying an amount close to a 15% tip you would choose to pay if there was not a discount Be aware you can still be more generous if you desire because the check (and room or credit card check) they bring has a space to add additional tip if you want.

Hi, I've been reading all of the info you have given about the TIW card and am thrilled to find out about it. I do have one question though. My family is going to SSr in Aug and we are already planning on buying annual passes. I know that the pass doesn't activate until you actually enter a park for the first time even if you purchase the pass months before, so your expiration is 1 year from the first time you enter the park. Does the TIW card work the same way or is the expiration from date of purchase. We are going to use our passes this Aug and then planning to use them next Aug to squeeze 2 trips out of them. So I guess what I need to know can I buy it from home this spring(when our tax refund shows up)or should I wait until we get there in Aug? There will be 8 of us staying for a week so I can see it giving us significant savings, especially if we can use it for both trips. Thanks in advance.

Wait until you get there and buy it at Guests Services when you activate your passes. It is good approximately 13 months from date of purchase, depending upon when in the month you purchase it. Generally if you would purchase it early in August it would expire at the end of the following August. A little later in the month, and it would expire the end of September the following year. Either way, you get at least one full year.

You can buy your, AP's and TIW card at the same time at any Guest Relations location at WDW. All you need is your DVC Member ID, a picture ID for each adult guest and lots of money. :thumbsup2

You will want to wait to purchase it in August. You can do it at any Guest Relations window.
We got our DDE/TIW card the same day we exchanged our AP vouchers out.

The annual pass expires one year from the day you buy it, and the expiration date is on the back. The voucher lets you pick up an AP when you go on site, but even if you don't go into the park on the day you buy it, it would still expire a year out.
I do not know if you can get a TIW card just on the AP voucher alone. When you do get the card, there is more than just a 12 month use on it. It seems to me that it can be as much as 13 months. So, if you get one in this August, you'll be able to use it next August as well.

I've not looked that closely at the bill. I just assumed that it was an 18% tip on the original amount. Would I add to the tip that's been calculated? Yes, I would but I haven't because of what I thought.

PS. I do not blame the servers for what the TIW card does. My DM was a waitress for nearly her whole working life, and so, I think of her when I'm waited on.

Thanks for the quick replies. Did the AP thing change? The reason I ask is that we had APs about 3 years ago and I do know that I bought them several months before to get them before a price increase and their expiration was set for the first use date. If so I may need to rethink. thanks again.

You can get the voucher before the price increase and activate that when you want. This is our third year with an AP and I know when we first got one, we went to DTD to get it the night we got to WDW, and it had that date on the pass, even though we didn't use it until the next day.

Thanks again for the info. I was confused about the voucher/AP terminology. I guess I mis-spoke when I called it an ap. Thanks for setting me straight:thumbsup2 . I can frequently talk myself into the wrong info and get everything mixed up.
