I think my new camera has a problem, but I thought I'd check with you all to see if it might be a user error first.

I've been having some trouble with the auto focus, especially when I'm using the 55-200 lens. I notice it most when I'm shooting basketball games in sports mode, so I thought maybe it was just that things were moving fast.

Today I've got the 18-55 lens and the camera just clicks and won't focus or take the shot. If I switch to manual I can take the picture.

The other thing I've noticed in sports mode with the 55-200 is that it only wanted to focus on the left in the view finder, never the middle.

There is plenty of charge in the battery, the camera is turned on, I'm getting no error messages, there are only about 5 pictures on the memory card. Help!

ETA: I took the lens off and put it back on and now it's working. I'd taken quite a few pictures with it before it started having problems and the lens didn't seem to be on wrong.

ETA again: Now it's not focusing again and just clicks as it tries. I'm so sad :-( In the words of Charlie Brown, "I've killed it!"

Take it back.
Agreed, that doesn't sound right at all. I used to have a D40 so I was going through the switches and menus in my head and I can't come up with a combo that would cause something like that.

Thank you both for answering. I'm assuming it's just the body that would need to go back? Dh bought it from Amazon.

If you purchased it all together I'd send the whole thing back and get completely new. Better safe then sorry.

I just bought a D40 yesterday and haven't had any of the troubles you're experiencing- and I the very same lenses. I'd return it all and let them send you new items. If there's something wrong with the body you may have inadvertantly damaged the lenses, too... like Wen said, better safe than sorry.

I agree with the others and would send the whole thing back. Good luck!!
