I am relatively new to knitting things other than what I call slabs (just a piece that is just garter or stockinette without any shaping). I am trying to start a simple knit lace blanket called Hemlock, but the instructions say to do nine stitched in one stitch. I don't know how that works. I am so easily confused on this stuff.

I'm not a knitter....but does making rugs make one a hooker?

I am a knitter but I don't follow patterns much. Does this perhaps mean that you slide the stitch you've already knitted back over and knit it over and over 9 times?

No but I wish I was!

the instructions say to do nine stitched in one stitch. I don't know how that works.

That's a lot of stitches to increase in one, but the way I'd do it is to knit into the front of the stitch, then the back of the stitch, then the front, alternating back & forward until you've done all nine. This is done without removing the original stitch from the other needle until you're done.

Ok, reading back over that, I think it might sound like Greek to a novice knitter. Sorry! It's way easier do than it sounds.

Look at your knitting. Go to make a normal knit stitch - you're knitting into the front of the loop on your left hand needle. Make your loop, but don't drop the loop from your left hand needle. Go into the back of that loop, make a knit stitch & hang onto it on your right needle. Again, don't drop the loop from the left needle. Go back & make a regular knit stitch... but don't drop the loop on the left side. Keep doing this, knitting into the front of your stitch and the back of your stitch until you've done it nine times, at which point you can drop the loop on the left hand needle.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, that helps. The rest of the pattern seems to be just yarn overs and k2tog and ssk, so I think I can handle them. Wish me luck.

I'm a knitter, but I've never heard of this. Jenn's explanation is what I was thinking, too.

::: giggle :::

who'd have expected two knitting hockey fans in one thread?

Of course, I'm a Devils fan... please don't hold that against me! =)

And Kim, I wish you nothing but luck! Gonna post photos when you're done?

I have been knitting for quite a few years. :goodvibes
This stitch is new to me.
However after reading the pp description it sounds right.
Let us know how this works out for you. :)

Oh, a knitter. I was about to say that just doesn’t seem to be an appropriate question. :rotfl2:
