Transcend?

Is Transcend a decent brand? I need a new card reader- mine doesn't read the high capacity cards. Amazon has an 8GB class 6 card with reader for $17.99. I don't really need anymore memory cards but it seems like a good deal to get the reader. If its not a decent brand I probably could get a reader alone for around the same price.

I've never had a problem with a few Transcend SD cards I've used on P&S cameras and my D50. I actually just bought a Transcend 4GB class 6 SDHC card for my wife's P&S from Amazon for about $3. If all you want is a card reader, Amazon has a great Kingston high speed card reader for $15. It's among the fastest UDMA card readers, which is important for use with my CF cards.

I use their 4, 8, 16GB extreme 300x CF cards in the D300 and have no complaints at all. For the D80, I've also used their class 6 SDHC cards.......no problems at all.

I just bought the same deal about an hour ago. Transcend is a reputable brand, and I have used them for years with my Canon cameras without any issues.

My Transcend 8g is pretty fast at writing, I'm quite happy with it. I recently got a great Black Friday deal on 3 Sandisk Extreme 3s which are even faster ($5 for all 3!) but the Transcend never bothered me in terms of speed.

My PQI 8g class 6 card on the other hand... painfully slow. The whole "class 4", "class 6", etc thing is pretty useless when the maximum-speed rating is pitifully slow.

I got the card and reader a few days ago. Popped the card in my D80- CHA error. Oh well. Put the Sandisk back in and there was no error. Figured I got a bad one. I tried it again later and it was fine. Should I trust it?

Checkout ecost.com, you can almost always get an 8GB card for free, or close to it, sometimes I have even see 16 GB cards for free. I haven't had any problems with any of my SD cards, ok once I erased all of my pictures, but that was my fault in not knowing the camera yet, so really, no problems.

Is your old card an 8gb SDHC? Also, Nikon may have a firmware update, some cameras could deal with some SDHCs but a firmware update lets them deal with more. (This is the case with our Fuji PnS and I think one of my DSLRs had two generations of SDHC firmware updates.)

I forgot to mention, if anyone wants a cheap USB SDHC card reader, SuperMediaStore sells a good one for $7 shipped.

The one that was in there is a 4GB- I have a Kingston 8GB that works fine. The camera is reading the 8GB Transcend now. Just hope it doesn't decide it doesn't like it while its in use!
