I am wondering what these ports of call are known for. I would love to bring back something special for my mom that can be linked up with the islands.

We went to St Thomas and St Maarten last year and when we returned we saw a really neat show about these braclets that can only be purchased on St Maarten. This is what I am interested in...thanks

In Grand Cayman, look for black coral jewelry - it is the only place I know that you can get it.

Hi callahanjulie10,

Memories of Cayman...depends on your budget..

1. Tortuga Island Rum Cake...richest pound cake we've ever savoured! We used to order it once we got back home for special holidays. Many imitators - some aren't bad!

2. Turtle Farm...buy a certificate to have a turtle released in "mom's name"...

3. A cob necklace...great jewellery shopping. One thing that I hadn't seen on islands were the mounted cobs (old world coins) - My DDH bought a 1 Reale coin minted in Potosi, Bolivia between 1556-1598. It is a very simple setting - a gold "frame". Some cobs had very fancy frames - diamonds, even tiny little scuba divers holding the coin. Mine's almost rustic in comparison, but dazzles me with it's history. (Make sure your purchase comes with a Certificate of Authenticity). I bought mine about 10 years ago at FINJTERRE LTD on Fort. St. They specialize in gold and black coral as well.

Hope this helps!

:p

The Frommers Caribbean Ports of Call guidebook says that it is illegal to bring Black Coral back into the U.S.

Black coral is endangered and customs WILL nab you for bringing it back as they should! Turtle oil and lotion is another no no!
Just a heads up before you buy it.
