Not to get into a debate, but if anyone thinks the media is not largely responsible for his popularity, then they are fooling themselves. This guy is nothing more than a rock star, celebrity, etc. I can guarantee that a majority of the people who voted had no clue where he stood on any subject.

Sorry, but no one would care about another old white guy getting elected. Need proof? Look back at the big deal that was made of the Bush inauguration and there has been NO mention of cost this year, especially considering the economic climate.
I am very proud that our country has overcome its race issues, the media just disgusts me, thats all.

I absolutely agree that without the media (television, radio, internet), we would have no idea who any of these people are. Do you think media wasn't involved in every single election since the birth of this country? The media was different, (all print, and slow to arrive), but it was the only way people can communicate to one another. Do I think the media doesn't affect the outcome of elections? That would be foolish...of course it does.
But to paint all voters as blindly following the prettiest bauble presented on TV...that's insulting. If that were the case, I can think of someone much prettier that was presented by THE MEDIA, who was outright rejected by the majority of voters.

No insult intended. The sad truth is that a majority of voters had no idea of who he was or what his qualifications were, they still don't. They voted for the black guy, or sadly, against him, that's it. They had no idea who McCain or Biden even was.
And yes, they knew the pretty one (no argument here) because she was lambasted by the media regularly.

I would imagine that is the case given that ABC News is one of the Walt Disney Company's properties.

I really resent this comment. I helped with the campaign and talked to many people all over this country. They were fully aware of his policies and his qualifications as well as McCain's and Biden's. My husband is black and he didn't vote for either because he didn't like their collective policies. It's wrong to group people together as ignorant because they chose to vote for the other candidate. Should we blame every person who voted in Bush for the last 8 years of nonsense? Right now we need to come together and try to work on the daunting issues we have ahead of us.
Not to mention this is a huge moment in United States history. I would hope the crowd and the media would be just as large if Hillary Clinton would have gotten elected.
But this is not a debate for a disney board. This belongs on a political board.

For me, today was not necessarily about Obama, it was about History. It was about the firsts. It was about MLK, it was about how, as Obama said, 60 years ago, his father could not have even eaten in certain places in DC and now, his son, has been raised to the highest job in the country.
It gives me hope for the country about equality and the desire to allow all to have a voice regardless of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation or even MIDDLE names!
Anyone who thinks the American people do not know who they voted for has to just step briefly bak in time and look at who they voted for in the past.
I am proud to say I brought history to the lives of 700 children today. As I said to a 5 year old as we watched together, 'WHen you are grown and someone asks you where you were, you can say, right here at school!."
Here is to a new day dawning, a new day full of possibilities, where ANYONE can be President of the United States, where ANYONE who has good ideas, a solid sense of patriotism and a HUGE backbone can be president!

It was reported on our local news yesterday (1/19/2009) that as late as 1968, minorities were not allowed to use the bridges to cross from Daytona on the mainland to Daytona Beach.
This is not ancient history.

Hi all,
First, thanks Pete for setting up the feed.
I was there at the Mall (in front of Washington Monument) for the actual event (the only thing I saw was a Jumbotron TV and got cold). The mood on the Mall was one of hope and uplifted spirits. It was mobbed, like it looked on TV but there were strangers hugging each other, people who met on the subway coming in sharing blankets to keep warm, taking photos for people to memorialize the event.
It was a challenge getting out of the Mall, the exits were somewhat controlled to funnel crowd but eventually I was able to get to subway and home.

Interesting point.
I wish people would point out more how far we have come and not dwell on the past so much.
The Reverend Joseph Lowery ,at the inauguration today, I thought summed up best way Mr. Obama thinks about race relations.
I wish upon all Americans, to be judged on their actions and not skin color. And I think we can all agree on that. Good luck to all in the coming years and God Bless America.

Yes, but I thought it was odd that after introducing "George Herbert Walker Bush", "William Jefferson Clinton" they introduced him as Barack H. Obama. Avoid much?
I thought the ceremonies were wonderful. The whole time I'm thinking "How difficult must it be to coordinate all this?" and "What must his daughters be thinking???"

I wish people would point out more how far we have come and not dwell on the past so much.
Not dwelling in the past, but more pointing out that the past was not all that long ago.
Trust me when I tell you that I see how far we've come. We live in a time when I have no fear of letting you who I really am.
P.S. I, for one, was mesmorized by Aretha'a hat.

Here is to a new day dawning, a new day full of possibilities, where ANYONE can be President of the United States, where ANYONE who has good ideas, a solid sense of patriotism and a HUGE backbone can be president!
I don't know, show me a fat native american lesbian president and then I might believe that statement. :rotfl2:
In all seriousness, I do see this as a very hopeful time but I hope everyone isn't expecting too much too soon and become disillusioned. As they say with weight loss, we didn't get into this mess overnight and we aren't going to get out of it overnight.
Please keep this thread free from any political debate.
Sorry Kevin, :wave2: I couldn't resist.

I read the girls were having a sleepover over with their friends last night while mom and dad were at the balls. Imagine what it would be like to be invited to a sleepover in the White House.:thumbsup2

I heard that too...wouldn't that be awesome? I also read that someone set up a scavenger hunt for the girls throughout the residence while mom & dad were out. How cool is that?!!

Thanks Pete! We had a TV here at work so I got to watch on and off. I set the DVR at home. I had tear's running down my face when he took the oath. It was a great moment for this country and the world.:grouphug:

The inauguration was cool, even though there were certain people there I felt bad for. It was cold!!!
I work at an urban ministry and I meet kids who have been told for years that they have no future because they cannot succeed in a white world. Now there is substantial proof that what they were being taught was a lie. There are a bunch of empowered kids in this ministry and for that reason alone, I'm glad Obama's president. If he would continue Bush's policy on funding PEPFAR, I will have two reasons to be glad. Kids in Africa will be empowered, too!
I've always been a huge political buff and have watched every inauguration since I was nine. This was the first time most people have ever watched one of those things. There was a huge party in the student center and half the students and faculty had gathered to watch the speech. We are a mostly Republican school, and that says a lot that they were there. The daughters looked gorgeous, as did Michelle. They were all so darn pretty. Preeeetty....
Sorry, lost it for a second.
Anyway, I didn't vote for Obama, but I do respect him as president. I will at least respect him no matter what he does, even if I strongly disagree with his policies. After all, that is the adult thing to do, right? (yes, that was meant as a hint)
God bless America!

Let me tell you, working at a 4-star hotel during the Inauguration was not fun. I would rather work holiday retail at Tysons Corner than go through that again. It was sheer insanity at the spa. Catching up on the podcast in the employee cafeteria during my break made it a little easier. And get this... the kitchen didn't supply cake :( Luckily I bought a strawberry cupcake before I went into work. Yumm.
That being said, it was fun to get caught up in the excitement coming home on the Metro. Everyone's sandwiched in like sardines but there was lots of smiling and laughter.
Also, I've never ever seen so many Port-a-Potties and fur coats in my entire life.
