View Full Version : Is it worth it to get the Disney Visa??

We just booked a trip for 11/29 through 12/6 of 2009 and it looks like last year, free dining was offerred to Disney Visa holders.

Is it worth it to sign up for the Disney Visa and hope they offer it again? We barely use credit cards, but if it means free dining it might be worth it, right? :)

We got the Disney Visa and we only charge the purchases that we would have paid by cash or check(gas, groceries, restuarants...) and we do not use it for any other purchases. We pay it off every month (their interest rate is high) this way we are only using it for our normal purchases. We have accumulated over 600 in disney dollars, we are saving to have a free trip:cool1: Also; if you use it to pay for your disney trip it's 0% interest for 6 months.

I think its worth it! Even if they don't offer "free dining" specifically, Disney Visa cardholders usually are offered specials before they come available to the general public. And as the PP mentioned, you do get 6 months interest free on packages, if that's something you would want to do.

To me, the best perk is the points. We put most purchases on the card, pay it off every month, and rack up the points for our next trip. A few weeks before your trip, you simply request a card and add you points to it - you can use it just about anywhere at Disney. If you know you're going to be going to DW, its like free money! We had about $500 last trip, and we should have close to that for our next one too. That's a lot of souvenirs! We've been very happy with the customer service, too.

Heck yes!
We use our all the time. We pay it off, or close to every month.
We had close to 500.00 on it (Disney Dollars if you will)
The last time we went to WDW.
Just keep it payed off, or a close to that as you can.
Our interest rate was 5.0% for purchases, it will be going to 9.99 in March.
The increase is happening to everyone. Some it goes as high as 20 plus %, it depends on your payment history and credit.

How many dollars do you have to spend to get 1 disney $? We are going in Dec. and I was wondering if that would be enough time to earn Disney $s?

$100 spent will earn you one Disney "point" (dollar). So, 1% of your purchases. Once in a while Chase (the bank that offers the Disney Visa) will run promotions where you can earn 5X reward dollars in certain categories (usually groceries, gas, etc) but this requires you to reach a certain threshold in those categories before the 5X rewards kick in. We just had a promotional period end where we earned $46 dollars in one month, waaaay more than what we usually accrue.

I like our Disney Visa card, mainly for the access to discounts and for the perk of having an extra 6 months to pay off our vacations. You would need to spend a lot of $$ to rack up hundreds of dollars of reward points.

Where do you go to get the free pics with your Disney Visa Card?

su_A_ve
01-16-2009, 03:03 PM
getting a big TV? Get the DVR first! The DVR is one of the few fee-free visas that include some signature options such as warranty manager. Not only you get a double warranty for up to one year for most purchases, but you can also purchase extended warranty.

For example, a $2000 TV would cost upwards of $800 for a 5 year extended warranty. Thru visa, it's only $190.

Another benefit is early access to purchase tickets for certain events (usually via ticketmaster).

Where do you go to get the free pics with your Disney Visa Card?

Epcot Innovations West (I think), every day between 1pm and 4pm. It's a 'private' meet and greet (just a few minutes) with several characters.

We use if for big purchases, then pay it off. If you pay if off when you get the statement, no interest. It is a free card, no annual fee. You also get a percentage off for tours. Its worth it to us, and the free character meet is :) great. We did it on Christmas Day, saw Mickey and Pluto with NO WAIT!! They were great, told us to take as many pictures as we wanted.

I agree the Disney Visa is awesome!

My SIL's husband does a lot of traveling for work. He has to pay for things up front and then his company reimburses him. They charge everything to their Disney Visa and then pay it off when the company cuts him a check. This way they rack up reward $$ without having to pay anything. Pretty smart.

I use mine for every day purchases and then pay it off when the bill comes. So even though I have the $200 for groceries, I deduct it from my checking account but use the charge. When the bill comes the money is just sitting in my checking waiting for me to pay the credit card. It's a system that works and then I rack up rewards.

Thanks everyone! I'm not worried about not paying it off - we always pay our CC in full each month. I just wondered if the rewards were worth it...

Free dining would be awesome!!!!!!!!!!

I have the Disney Visa and love it. I use it for everything possible. I buy groceries each week and then go home and do a web banking payment right from my checking account for that amount. That way I really don't ever have any charges (to say) on the card. I try to pay as many bills as I possibly can also each month with it. I am working on saving for a trip or partial trip and I am up around 100 points and just started about a yr ago.

I love the compliments I get on the card too when I hand it to the cashiers. LOL

We have already put down the deposit on our upcoming trip. Can I still get the Disney Visa and put the balance on that or do you need to use the card when you actually book the trip to get the 6 months with 0% financing?

covereddish
01-22-2009, 08:41 PM
Yes, you can still use it for your balance, and if you got your Disney Visa in time, you could always cancel/re-book your trip, and then it would all be on there, and you would get the Reward points for it, too! That is the best part!

We are big fans, can you tell!

We have a Disney Visa and it's worth it to us. We only charge a few things a year (like airline tickets) and pay them off when the bill comes, so it's like free money on a Disney trip for us. We usually only have enough for a couple of dinners, but they are free.....:)

It is so worth it!!!!!!!!!!!! We got our a few years ago just to get a jump start on a discount for a fall trip before it went to the general public.

We charge EVERYTHING on it (gas, groceries etc.) and pay it off each month. Last year we also received several 5X offers and really racked up the points. We accumulated just under $600 and used that money to upgrade our 8 day PH to AP's (our OOP cost for the upgrade - $3.47)

It is absolutely worth it. We have been Disney Visa card holders for years. Use it and pay it off every month. One years we racked up about 500 Disney points. Interest rates will vary based on credit history but it is the primary card we use. Heck, it is the only reward card we have where we think the rewards are useful.

i've been using it for my business and racked up $1200+ in points last yr, made for a great free trip :)

We just applied for ours last night. We plan on using it in place of our debit card then pay it off each month.
Hopefully we will earn a good amount of points before our trip in Dec. :bitelip:

It's also great for a Disney Visa Package at Disneyland that scored me a 2 free lanyards with pins and a cool Disneyland backpack.

I only use our Disney Visa to get the free meet and greets and the tour discounts and the 0% APR on all Disney trips, but for cash back - I do not think its the best out there.

I prefer to use my AmEx Blue card - where it starts at 1.5% so already ahead and then once you spend $6500 - certain category like gas and food are at 5% - which definitely adds up quicker than 1%. Now with that said - I don't get to transfer it to a cool Disney rewards card..lol But after just 4-5 mths - I have $398 rewards $$ that will be a direct credit to my Aug statement. So between now and then I should easily get $800. So $$ spend vs $$ earned - 5% all the time is much better for me.

I love my Disney card. I use it almost everyday. What I do is make a purchase then in my check book ledger write that amount in for whatever store I am at and next to it put on Disney Card so every couple days I get on my web banking and transfer over how much I charged. That way I get the points, but no interest. Our interest rate is low due to good credit. Like others have said probably not the best card out there, but since I love Disney to me its the best card. I can't wait to see what my 5x points adds up to. I am hoping to save enough points to have a good chunk of my trip paid for.

It is totally worth it! We have gotten so much out of ours.

And, right now, they are offering $25 free Reward dollars if a current DVISA holder refers you.

PM me if you want to have a referral. I can send you the link!

I finally applied for the disney visa. There are several promotional offers out there. I thought I'd found the best - a $25 rebate on your first disneyshopping dot com purchase, but then I found a better one after I'd already applied. I am one of those crazy 1000 moms who won the Disney Mom's in home "What will you celebrate" party box. Inside was an application for a Disney visa with $40 cash back. If course I would have rather had this perk so I thought some of you might want it too. Not sure if it's ok to put the website on here, so hopefully I don't get kicked off. We're all :cheer2:about saving money though aren't we? Go to disneyworld dot com/save40 or you can call the Disney visa phone number you find online and ask for the code 6L5701. Good luck! I wish I had found this code sooner.

If you are interested in applying, the offer for the $100 gift card was still active yesterday--I gave this info to someone else on the board and they were able to use it and confirmed the offer was for $100 GC and was still valid. I can't guarantee it is still active today , but if the offer is still available this is one of the best offers you will find. The number to call to apply is 1-800-943-8319 and the code is CDZF. You can always give the code and ask to be sure it is still valid. (I will try and verify and post back what I find out).

Can you use the Disney rewards to actually pay your tips if on DDP?

When you talk about paying for vactions can you actually use those Disney rewards and redeem them against the actual cost of the trip? Say if I booked with AAA can I redeem my rewards for that?

I have a DriversEdge card that is our primary card but you have to use the rewards within 3 years and we just bought a car and don't foresee another one within that time frame so I want to get rid of it. We're planning a summer 2010 trip to WDW and this seems ideal. I'm very diligent about spending and paying off my bill every month.

You can use Disney rewards to pay tips if on DDP at almost all locations (I haven't found one yet that didn't take it) here is a link that you can use to see where you can redeem rewards: http://disneyrewards.disney.go.com/cardbenefits/themeparkbenefits.html
scroll down to 'Finance the Fun with Disney Rewards'

baj0505 - Just received my Disney Visa in the mail today. I called to confirm receipt and asked about the $100 gift card. Was told once I made a purchase with new card at the end of the first cycle Chase would notify Disney and I should expect to get the gift card in about 8 weeks. So thank you soooooooo much, that was an awesome deal. It will come in handy with some summer shopping.

My husband applied via the link on the AP site to receive the $100 giftcard. I referred him so I received the $25 bonus!! He received the giftcard about 2 weeks after he used the card. Pretty good deal if I must say so. The only place I ever saw the $100 giftcard is on the AP section of the WDW site via a link. On the mainpage it's $40, I think. Nowhere did it say you had to be an AP holder to receive the promo, but that's where the link is to apply online.

The link was still there today!!

There have been several offers lately floating around for the $100 (they seem to come and go) thru the AP site, DVC member site, Mickey Monitor had a special code, a direct mailing with the brochure went out a couple of weeks ago. The links come and go periodically but definitely the $100 GC is the best offer I've seen in the past 3 years.

You can use it to pay for your tips if you are on the DDP; and you can use it to pay for your meals if you are not! We average $600/year in rewards and use it on our twice yearly trips. I have paid towards our room, paid for meals, bought souvenirs, just about anything with our rewards card. I think its a great perk. And I was thrilled to get the Free Dining last fall. It never did go public for the month of Nov., only available to DV members.

I have not gotten the free photo, but I *LOVED* the free strollers at DL! We got two of them, one w/ my VISA, one w/ Dh. We have three kids, and it was wonderful. I didn't have to fly the stroller out to Ca.

Its also good for dining discounts at DL. Great perks for anybody thinking of going to DL.

But if you are a Disney trip lover, you can't go wrong with the reward dollars!

The only places I have seen the $100 giftcard offer was through a link on the AP site. There it didn't say only AP holders or anything but to get there you have to have the AP or the voucher. I did receive a flyer in the mail as well with the AP renewal and that flyer did say an offer for Annual Passholders. Another poster in this thread said there were other's that were out there as well but this is the only one that I am familar with and yes, the $100 gift card was received and I got the referral $25.
