I know I'll be feeling better, but I've got to take antibiotics for 10 days. That means no alcohol at our dinners at Narcossee's or Victoria and Albert.

I'm not a huge drinker, but when fine dining, we always enjoy a bottle of something, usually with a champagne cocktail to start.

Drat! I guess I'll be a cheap date.

Oh well, at least it's not a broken leg or something

That's a bummer but, as you said, it could be worse!

Maybe you can get some fancy frou frou drink without the alcohol just for fun.

Heck a sick day at WDW is better than a regular day at home, right?

Can you get a Zpac? you will be done in 5 days

Oh yeah, my vote is for the Zpac!! Those pills are a godsend!

BTW I've never heard no alcohol with antibiotics? I've always just heard to be careful with the you-know-what, because antibiotics might interfere with another little pill you may or may not be taking! (wink wink) Either way, enjoy your trip!! You'll have a great time.

I know it's a bummer, but you'll be feeling much better by the time you get to WDW. On our last trip I had some grand plans for new drinks I wanted to try...that worked for a couple of days till I came down with Strep at Disney :scared1: Once I got on the meds I was better within hours, but it was a bummer!

Here's to a speedy recovery and a good trip! :flower3:

If you are just taking a garden-variety antibiotic, you'll probably be fine with responsible alchol consumption whilst fine-dining.

You could always ask to get the shot of penicillen.....it works within 12 hours, and you are not contagious after that either. :thumbsup2

Sorry about your strep. I can emphathize with you. I too, started an anitbiotic yesterday because of possible strep. However, I have a Z-pak. You would notice a difference the second day you started. Hope you have a great time and feel better soon. Disney should do the trick!

I am on regular penicillen (sp?) and it has already worked wonders. I am feeling lots better and I checked my drug warnings and there's no mention of alcohol so that's good.

So I'll be a good girl and take all 40 pills over the ten days, and hey I'll be at WDW, so yay!!!

This will be lots better than the last time I had strep (Oct 2005). Came down with it on the red eye to NYC, toured the city all day, then boarded a cruise ship (cruising New England and Canada) the next day with laryngitis. Went to the ship's doc, got antibotics and he told me not to drink. Took them for the prescribed 7 days, had one day where I could drink, then somehow reinfected myself and had to go back on the drugs. And it rained heavily 4 out of 6 port days. I will say, it was my cheapest bar bill on a cruise EVER.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

zithromax is not a good strep abx. While it is approved, you need a larger dose than the z-pack and it simply doesn't work as well. For strep, twice a day is fine using penicillin if you take the correct dose otherwise (500 mg two times a day for an adult), three or four times a day is not necessary (this only applies to strep throat). An alternative for those who can take penicillin is a one time injection of LA Bicillin.

Yep, my son got that injection.....he was in second stage of strep that had a full body rash with it. OMH, within 12 hours, no rash, no strep!! It works really fast with the injection. Good stuff Dean..thanks!:thumbsup2

Hey MD Girlfriend...back atcha! Well, I'm not saying z pack doesn't work, I'm saying the shot works really FAST! So if time is an issue, I would get the shot. Too cold here in MD for me!!! Brrrr.....:wave2:

I know it is soooooooooooo cold and tomorrow will be even worse. I am glad I am heading to FL in 10 days. Looks Jan. will be warmer than when we were there in Nov.

My dh swears the z pack is useless. He had a couple of times and had to go back for another antibiotic. SO....he refuses to take it if they try and prescribe it for him. It has worked for me and the kiddos so far. However that shot sounds like a good deal too especially when they are so sick and you want them well fast. I am off today and should be :laundy: and doing other stuff and I keep stopping by my laptop. :lmao: I will keep that shot in mind in case one of us goes down between now and Jan. 26th. Fingers and toes are crossed. :p

Either a Dr. or a pharmacist! :lmao: Only kidding Dean! You sound like my Pharm D. instructors!!

You can have a drink or two on penicillin and it won't hurt you. I wouldn't drink a whole bottle mind you, but a little won't hurt!

Hey didn't even think about pharmacist. That is good.
:thumbsup2 I have always heard that a pharmacist is the person to ask about medicine.....not the doctor.

Are you a doctor?? You are so mysterious Mr. Dean. ;)I am a Pediatrician. The info is for general reference, not a specific recommendation. I did train under one of the Strep Guru's. It's interesting the treatment and over treatment I see from certain locations we deal with where strep is concerned.

Hey there MD friend...... my 10 year old son had the strep with the scarlet fever rash right before Christmas....funny thing...he got the z pack and it worked. :confused3The dose of zithromax for strep is higher than for other infections and you don't decrease the dose like in the Z pak. Strep also has a decent risk of resistance to Zithromax (like Erythromycin), but if used correctly it will work fine for MOST people, just not as well as regular penicillin or similar or as consistently. It's just not necessary to use it unless there are allergies or you're treating an additional problem and trying to kill two birds with one stone. Actually it's a pretty poor abx in general for most things, with exceptions of course.

You can have a few drinks. There are no adverse effects if you drink alcohol while taking penicillin.

For me, the worst part of strep is the pain in my throat. I have taken some pain meds along with antibiotics and it made a BIG difference.

Good luck & hope you feel better.:earsboy:

So I'm guessing you advise your patients to avoid the alcohol while treating their strep. :rotfl:

I have always known you TO be very wise....very. :goodvibesI'm pretty good at being careful to provide info without giving specific medical advice so I don't think it'll be a problem. Medicine, like many things, is a practice and there are many ways to do things.
